Finally, court hussar is an excellent card in UW and even better in Jeskai - it lets us dig for combo pieces! They make the deck much more consistent in my opinion.
Also, what do people think of devout lightcaster? Seems like a perfect sideboard card for us against Deaths shadow.
Congrats on your result.
For a long time I didn't like the Hussars. Even when this deck has it's old thread, I never used them. However, my meta became infested with Grixis Shadow decks which like to grind... and I mean they REALLY like to grind. I found out the hard way that they are indeed tough. That's when I thought of adding Hussars... and they performed really well. Helps filter through for sideboard cards.
And for Devout Lightcaster. She has been performing well, she can exile Angler, Tasigur, and Death Shadow. Can't be removed by Dismember, Kolaghan's Command, Dreadbore, and Terminate. Only things that kill her are Bolt which is usually a one-of in their deck, counters, and surprise block with snapcastrer - if they have two mana untapped and one of those is blue.. don't just attack with the lightcaster, attack with someone else and hold back the lightcaster for defense - they might have a snappy for surprise block.
I ran it in the past as an awnser to Jund Shadow but always it seemed mediocre IMO. Now that Grixis Shadow is dominant I wouldn't even consider it even though it has more targets. Grixis is already a great matchup, so I'm not going to devote narrow sideboard slots to fight it. The only redeeming quality that Lightcaster has outside of Grixis is a hedge against Leyline of the Void. Personally I would just run more Finks, I've won many games against Grixis because of those guys. More importantly though I can bring them in against more than one matchup.
To each his own experience then. In my encounters with them, things would always go long because Azorius Titan's creatures are not built to finish off an opponent right away. It turns into an attrition match of card advantage vs. card advantage. And them resolving even one Ancestral Vision is bad news. If it gets to the point where I have an active Emeria.. then things start going well, but before it gets to that point - it's an uphill battle, because Tasigur + Kolaghans Command + Snap loops are hard to break - as they will often counter Path or I have to use the path on something else in order to not die. Lightcaster is the additional exile effect that I need to permanently get rid of Tasigur or another black creature, so that Kolaghan + snap can't return the thing back to their hand.
Ok, I see no point in arguing this further as Grixis Shadow has several variations and we might not be dealing with the same kind of Grixis Shadow. The ones that are hanging around in my meta have a certain number of ancestral vision and night's whisper in addition to their Serum Vision and Remand that also cantrip, - so they grind hard.
I used to have a one-of Celestial Purge, but soon realized that Burn is already handled by the 3 mainboard Missionaries + the 2 Spellskite in the side, and Goblins stopped existing here, so there's not much need against red. The Lightcaster can be... 1. flickered by Flickerwisp to remove another black delve creature, 2. can be revived by titan, 3. can be revived by emeria, 4. can block and attack. Purge is just one-time use and that's it.
The ability to hit Blood Moon and also being instant speed is why I like Celestial Purge more, too. However, I agree with you TheFluff, Devout Lightcaster synergieses more with Emeria's overall gameplan. If you feel based upon your previous experiences playing those decks that it is a needed inclusion in your board, then go for it. I'm wondering though, I've played against Grixis in all its iterations, is it really that hard of a matchup? It's been the subject of conversation twice on just this page alone and I just don't understand why. What seems to be your trouble with the matchup, especially with Emeria's countdown?
There are many Grixis decks over here.. I did a bit of research looking at primers of Grixis threads for Modern .. and the one I'm having trouble with looks similar to the one in Grixis Control primer here at Developing comnpetitive - the list has been modified to include Death Shadow. At the start it would be their typical opening of casting Thought Scour or Serum, while I go wall or seas on turn 2 - we then trade resources, I path / detention sphere one or two of their threats, they Dreadbore, Terminate, Kolaghan my threats until we're both down to one or two cards in hand. The problem starts when my opponent can recover faster because of their card draw in the form of Night's Whisper and Ancestral Vision.. don't know exactly how many AV they have, but there's at least three NW there. If even a single Tasigur survives, I'm in trouble already because it puts back cards into their hand.. I'm often forced to give them back removal or counters, because it's worse to give them back NW or Serum. -- I've partially solved the problem by adding some Court Hussar, and having 2 Lightcaster in the sideboard. Game 2: - 2 Lone Missionary + 2 Lightcaster. The lightcaster also goes in against Living End, another deck which is on the rise in my meta.
Grixis Control usually scoops to an active Emeria. So that should be yourb primary gameplan in that matchup. Crucible of Worlds works well in that regard and can also be used to disrupt your opponent and keep them off the mana needed for Cryptic Command and other counterspells.
I think I undervalue Tasagir as a threat myself. If you have the chance though Thoughtsour, TS, IoK, and restricted countermagic like Mana Leak are the best things to give them back.
From your explanation above early game they set up by using Serum Visions and Thoughtsour, midgame you trade resources and eat removal and countermagic, then late game they recover by using AV and NW,I'm guessing this is where they stick a threat and go beatdown?
How does a usual game go for you though, what cards are you resolving? Can you give me a play by play so I know how to help.
Grixis Control don't usually have a fast enough clock to pressure us so getting to Emeria is usually good enough and stalling out (or removing) Tasigur/Angler isn't that hard.
Post board Tormod's Crypt can be very good against them.
Grixis Death Shadow decks in my meta don't scoop to an active Emeria. They keep going, because by that time they have very large shadows capable of killing someone quickly - well, at that point they are also at very low life.. so both players have a chance.
Trying to manascrew them with crucible will take too long, I would be dead before that happens. They can also get rid of the crucible easily. I do have a Crucible in the sideboard, but that is brought in against Eldrazi Tron.
From your explanation above early game they set up by using Serum Visions and Thoughtsour, midgame you trade resources and eat removal and countermagic, then late game they recover by using AV and NW,I'm guessing this is where they stick a threat and go beatdown?
Ok, will try to explain as close as possible to what happen. It does not always go like this, but these are the more common scenerios...
Game one before any sideboarding happens.
Turn 1 and 2 - we both setup, I play wall of omens, seas or missionary.. whichever is available. Them.. turn one scour or serum, turn two night's whisper or suspend AV.
Turn 3-5 - the trading of resources begin.. Me: attempt a flickerwisp or blade splicer. Them cast a Tasigur or angler.. while holding up mana for stubborn denial or remand. I can usually kill their first one or two threats with path or sphere - whichever one is not countered.
Turn 5-8 - at this point most of my creatures are dead from their removal or died from blocking Angler / Tasigur, their threats are also mostly dead because I've casted a verdict that they can't counter. However, they can recover by one of these methods... 1. Kolaghans Command on a Tasigur killed by verdict 2. Snapcaster on Night's whisper or a Kolaghan's command 3. The suspend from an Ancestral Vision that they casted the previous turn ends, so they now draw three cards 4. One of their Tasigur survived and now being used to recycle cards from their yard
Turn 9 and above.. I'm hoping at this point that Emeria is already active.
___________
Well, I'm glad to talk to talk to you since you seem to be really active in this thread.
And as I've said on previous post.. adding some Court Hussar has improved things a bit. The Hussars help me filter and get that much needed path or sphere to stay alive. I only verdict as a last resort since they can often recover creatures from the yard with Kolaghan.
@D90Dennis - TheFluff mentioned it played more like a Death Shadow deck with AV and NW to fuel card advantage.
Anyway Gideon has impressed me against Grixis, I also like Mastery of the Unseen both of them are hard for the deck to interact with. Dusk // Dawn work well against them too.
Keep track off how many basic lands they play as some builds skimp and knowing exactly when your Ghost Quarters become Strip Mines is usful. Like D90Dennis said graveyard hate is an option as well. I however favour Surgical Extraction as it can snag any spell Snapcaster targets and sometimes opponents bring in Fulminator Mage.
First ever post on this thread. Been playing different Emeria decks through out the years. Started with mono white and now I'm playing this U/W version. I've been playing this list on MTGO as well as taking it to my local game shops in town and I've been very impressed with it. Expecially against the top tier decks. On MTGO I've been going 4-1 in leagues losing mostly to scapeshift. On paper I've gone 4-0 with a turn out of 30+ people.
Now let's talk about the deck.
The main deck list is pretty much tuned to beat the top tier decks. Court Hussar had been a mid-late game all-star. Being able to dig for answers and threats have been nothing but awesome.
The single Phantasmal Image has been a great addition to the deck. Being able to copy the best creature on the field or copy a titan or a Wall of Omen or a Court Hussar when your looking for an answer has won me many games.
The new Gideon is great expecially against combo decks. The real all-star from the side board have been Nevermore and Meddling Mage. Being able to name scapeshift or ad nauseam has really increase my win % against those decks.
I've been testing Vendillion Clique for a bit now and it's been ok. I will post my matches later.
Hey all, I pulled an omniscience invocation at the prerelease last night and traded it for most of this deck. Can someone give me a stock build as of right now to help me figure what it other cards I need to acquire for the deck? Thanks!

Hey all, I just featured Emeria Titan/Saheeli in my latest Under the Microscope series on YouTube. Looking at this thread, the decklist wasn't particularly refined but I think it does a good job showing the deck's strengths and weaknesses overall. We beat Abzan Midrange and Mono U Tron, but lost to UR Gifts Storm.
Check out some Magic Gameplay and Commentary videos here, including Modern Grixis, Jeskai, and Esper videos as well as some Standard and Drafts too: My YouTube Channel!
@The Fluff, I asked a friend to switch up their deck a little and played against a Grixis Shadow list with Nights Whisper and Ancestral Visions slotted in. It was in fact tougher to play against than the regular version in my opinion. Still, I think that I've figured out why your match experience seems to differ compared to mine. We played five games in total, of which I won four. Aggression, and persistent threats was key. Kitchen Finks, Gideon of the Trails, Eldrazi Displacer, Restoration Angel, and Sun Titan were MVP. The only real difference between our games and your play by play was that it seemed my friend had to commit more removal which tied up their mana and slowed down their overall gameplan. When I did cast Wrath of God to clean away the board, they were able to restock effectively but Gideon, of the Trails or Eldrazi Displacer kept Death's Shadow, Tasagir, and Angler in check while still present a clock and coutning down to Emeria, that or Sun Titan. My opponent did play through an active Emeria at my promoting and I was surprised. The game did not immediately end as I thought it would but rather I was usually in position of reanimating Lone Misionary for the first few turns before committing to real threats like Flickerwisp or Restoration Angel.
In conclusion I think that resiliency of the creatures and aggression that I was provided tied up my opponents resources by making them commit multiple removal spells a turn instead of advancing their own board state. Gideon, Sun Titan, and Eldrazi Displacer would often also force my opponent into committing multiple threats to the board which would be cleaned up by a Wrath of God.
I'm not sure if that helps at all but I hope so. If your still having trouble, I would suggest asking to swap decks and play with the one that you were losing too. It helps get a feel of how the deck plays overall. Along with the strengths and weaknesses and what kinds of cards are most difficult to deal in Emeria.
@Tim_T - I would suggest taking a look at the primer as it has a "stock list". If you're on a budget you could build up to U/W with the Mono White version first but U/W is still better overall. If you need suggestions per your local meta just let us know.
@ Paradox Omega - Thanks for posting the videos I'll take a look over them later, once I have more time and see if I can provide some sort of feedback
Thanks Fincown, I wasn't sure if primer was updated. I'm going to fnm this Friday and will be running this. I'll be sure to write a match report

I've just watched the videos, was an interesting watch.
Some observations an opinions on the deck:
#4x Ghost Quarter are definetly too many (especially in the pseudo 3-color version), I'd go down to 3x and add a Hallowed Fountain.
The deck also needs some more plains imho, 7x fetches are probably too much and at least 2x of them can be basic plains.
#Mortarpod is bad (I really dislike this card), it is very low impact in most matchups (especially since Infect is gone).
#Pilgrim's Eye is not worth it, getting a land is useful but it is too much of a tempo loss at 3-mana.
I'd much rather run Kitchen Finks to keep me alive against aggro/burn decks and get to the late game where I'd draw the lands anyway with enough cantrips.
I also prefer K.Finks over Lone Missionary as it blocks/attacks much better and comes back after sweeping the board.
#Spreading Seas and Court Hussar are key cards in the deck, I prefer to run a 4/3 of them and keep Negate (4x-of) in the SB.
#The deck isn't particulary good an comboing off and for value I won't go over 3x Saheeli, I also keep the 3x Felidars in the SB where I bring them to try and race other combo decks which I have trouble interacting with.
#Detention Sphere is the best removal spell in this deck and I suggest a 3/1 split on it MD/SB.
#Phantasmal Image is a great 1x-of in this deck.
Also Flickerwisp is probably the best card in the deck and should be a 4x-of imho.
#In the SB I'd go with Tormod's Crypt as my GY hate of choice as it doesn't cripple my deck like Rip and can also be played for free with a tapland.
Here is my version of the deck (probably needs some updates):
Wondering why so many decks posted now aren't running Negate mainboard? or even in the sideboard?
I get alot of play out of my negates and don't think I'd be able to slow my opponent down enough without them.
Also curious what good sideboard options are for UW variants?
I'd like some feedback on my current list, as I think I have a few wonky things, especially my sideboard and lands. Also open to changing my creature mix up a bit.
Negate is used to shore up our combo matchup. Scapeshift and Ad Nauseum mainly. Storm too but to a lesser extent and besides, we have better cards to fight Storm from the Sideboard.
As for your sideboard I would need to know what your meta is like to give any real advice. However a few cards that stuck out to me.
Resto Angel got much wore with the printing of Fatal Push. It's no longer just game over against BG(X). Lone Missionary is better as Kor Firewalker if your trying to fight burn, also strangle helps against storm. Ghost Quarter should be main IMO, you're not playing three colors so you should be able to support the full four. O-Command is a flex card, I personally love it but don't actually think you need it. The slot could be used something else.
Congrats on your result.
For a long time I didn't like the Hussars. Even when this deck has it's old thread, I never used them. Ghost Quarter should be main IMO, you're not playing three colors so you should be able to support the full four. O-Command is a flex card, I personally love it but don't actually think you need it. The slot could be used something else.
Hope this helps
