It may be tricky to fit too many copies of both Charming Prince and Stoneforge Mystic into the same deck. Especially considering SFM eats up a couple more slots with the equipment package too. You really don't want to be bogged down with to many two drops.
So I'm currently running through another league with my UW list and am 3 - 0. I've played GB Rock, Burn, and E-Tron so far, surprisingly E-Tron felt the easiest out of all of them.
With Prince and Wisp to flicker it I don't think that more than 2x copies of Mystic are really necessary.
I've seen many decks run the full playset of Mystic which seems too much and they don't even have the flicker effects.
On another note beating "Whirza" without Stony Silence in the SB is probably going to be really hard so the matchup seems a bit iffy for the deck.
Maybe replacing the SB Wrath for Nova can help but the plan is basically to board in Sphere and Sculler + Kambal and hope to disrupt them early.
So I ended up with a 4 - 1 beat gb rock, burn, etron, burn, and lost to amulet titan. Which, had I sequenced correctly I could've won the match. Overall I'm pretty happy with how the deck preformed. Teferi, Time Raveler with a Charming Prince is gas, and I fealt like none of the matches outside of amulet were particularly close. I'm thinking that the emeria archetype is pretty well positioned right now.
@D90Dennis14
I don't think that I could be comfortable playjng without Stony Silence outside a local metagame without artifact matters / tron decks.
If you're looking to trim them for now I would suggest looking at the matches you side SS in. Then find a replacement that you can side in into similar matches.
Hey Marinojuk I'm going to GP Montreal this weekend and might jam some modern with Emeria before/after the main event. I will take your word on the Teferi's and replace my Court Hussars. Some questions for you:
1. Did you miss Flickerwisp at all or did you find Charming Prince fulfilled that role ? I'm concerned about the deck's closing speed in only 50 minute rounds
2. Did you like the main Dovin's Vetos? Feel like Ranger Captain already serves a similar purpoes
3. Thoughts on the Crucible?
Huh, didn't know that gp montreal was next week. I'll need to see if I can get there, kinda last minute though and I don't even have all the cards in paper yet.
Anyway to answer your questions;
1. I found actually found it was Teferi, Time Raveler that played a very similar role to Flickerwisp during my league matchups. TTR allows you to rebuy your etb effects and can dig you out of sticky situations with troublesome permanents like Ensnaring Bridge or Blood Moon. However, both the passive and the plus are also extremely synergistic with the deck. For example it combo's well with Ranger-Captain of Eos and if you have both, your opponent is literally locked out of non-creature spells. Against burn I was able to return Charming Prince three times in one game and not have to worry about Skullcrack effects. It's removal, card advantage, and a safety net all in one.
2. I feel counter-magic like Dovin's Veto is a necessary evil in the main deck when splashing blue. Our worst matches are the ones where our opponents go turn five Scapeshift or turn three Karn, Liberated on the play, if we have access to counter-magic in those situation we easily win the game from that position. I relate Dovin's Veto to Brought Back as a situational spell that varies in power level by matchup but is never completely dead. I do believe it is correct to play them, and remember in the past we have played Negate in the maindeck because it plays to our strength of splashing U.
3. I really like Crucible of Worlds, even in the matches where it's not especially good it still guarantees land drops, which is card advantage. It also provides inevitability with Emeria, the Sky Ruin in two senses. That we have a literal countdown, and it adds a secondary layer of protection so that even if Emeria, the Sky Ruin is destroyed by a Field of Ruin or a Assassin's Trophy, it will still come back.
Thanks! I'll keep that in mind, although I think I should be able to do a pick up preorder from F2F at the GP.
Logistically I don't think I can go without taking time off work and its a little bit rushed so I'll be scrambling for accommodations. Not to mention a 7 hour drive.
I don't think I'm going to this one but I'll be at the Toronto GP for sure. I hope you have tons of fun and crush the competition though!
I did post it, it's on the last page but I'll post the goldfish link too. I'm not sure definitively which is better yet. I think it's subjective as in it depends on your past experience and expected metagame. I will say that the uw list has impressed me.
So I just played against uw control with main deck Rest in Peace, probably a remnant of an old list before the banning's. I ended up losing in three but the games were down to the wire and came down to time. Which my opponent had less than a 40 seconds on me, I was really impressed by all of the blue splash Dovin's Veto, Detention Sphere, and Teferi, Time Raveler were all huge in the match. I ended up flooding hard in the second match and lost but in the third if we had been in paper I'm pretty sure I would have won. I had dealt with his Rest in Peace with Blast Zone, which unlocked Emeria, the Sky Ruin. His planesalkers had been neutralized with Detention Sphere and Sorcerous Spyglass, I had utility lands on lockdown with Ghost Quarter. The board state was my Sun Titan and Teferi, Time Raveler and a clue versus his clique and TTR, he was at 5 life and I was at 17.
Long story short, I think that we have a real chance in this matchup and the blue splash gives us a lot of needed cards. If I had played a little faster or conceded a little earlier game two I may have won.
Edit
Ever since I went 5 - 0 in my league, I've started seeing more and more emeria lists pop up online. I just finished playing against a mono white emeria list, It's kinda awesome playing the mirror. In that particular game I was favored b/c I had more card advantage and utility lands than my opponent. That said, they put up a good fight and their Brought Back drew them a lot of cards post wrath.
I'm actually not sure which variant is favoured in the mirror, it's an interesting question to ask. If both players are on the Thraben Inspector and Wall of Omens card advantage plan it's probably the mono white player b/c they aren't playing counter-magic and therefore have a higher density of action cards to hit. However, if the UW player is on the Court Hussar, Spreading Seas plan I think they'd be favored instead.
I've been playing Emeria deck since the Mortarpod days, and recently stumbled on the forums. Lately I've been on the Ephemerate/Brought Back/Soulherder plan, but I'm very interested in this new build using Ranger-Captains and Teferi. How do you reuse your triggers though?? I'm used to playing the deck and using Flickerwisp, et al to bounce creatures. Without any proper bounce spells other than a Teferi -3, where is the value?
I'd really like to try this build if it's as strong as everyone things, but I don't want to buy into Ranger-Captains or Teferis without knowing how to pilot the deck.
Thanks!
On a related note, is there an accepted list using Soulherder or Brought Back, or are Bant Soulherder and Ranger-Captain Emeria both strictly better?
Welcome to the forum Paul!
We re-use Ranger-Captain Triggers via Sun Titan/Emeria - a common play pattern vs. control is to sac Ranger-Captain on your turn to safely resolve Sun Titan, immediately bringing back Ranger-Captain. The Ranger-Captain "lock" is mainly a mid-late game play usually when you have Emeria online (or you have drawn into multiple Ranger Captains) where you sac him on your opponents upkeep which essentially shuts off all Sorcery speed non-creature spells and restricts instants to be played on upkeep/ your turn. With a Teferi online that locks your opponent playing instants on only their upkeep.
Ranger Captain fetches up Kami/Thraben Inspector which buys time for you to get to your Sun Titan / getting Emeria online. In the late game you have a Ranger Captain lock against non creature decks, and also a Kami-lock against creature decks that attack us. Meanwhile all our creatures are basically 2 for 1s / cantrips and we drown them in card advantage. Hence I tend to chump creatures quite liberally.
The deck is very fun and rewarding to play, there's many lines and game plans that you need to identify and execute at the proper point in game. You also have a land destruction package in recurring Field of Ruin with Sun Titan/Crucible, and the ability to loop Blast Zone with Sun Titan to blow up troublesome permanents.
Thanks CoffeeorTea! I generally figure that once Sun Titan/Emeria is online, the game is won anyway- my biggest concern is getting to turn 7 or 8 when the engine gets going. I am hesitant to ditch the Court Hussar/Flickerwisp package- this lets you look 3 cards deep twice, rather than the Inspector, which lets you pay 2 to draw a card off the top once.
I currently play Crucible of Worlds and love it, so I'm familiar with that line! I really like the look of the Ranger-Captain lock as well, but I guess my question is- what does the "ideal" turn 3-4-5 look like with the Ranger-Captain deck? I feel like this deck is probably better than traditional Emeria, but seems like maybe we are simply playing creatures with better value, rather than relying on "creating" value by blinking a sub-par creature package- is that sort of your take?
Thanks again!! Looking forward to hearing more about this strategy!
Why aren't you playing Flickerwisp and Court Hussar ?
They are some of the best creatures in the deck and I never build the deck without them.
I'd also suggest playing more Detention Sphere.
Hi D90Dennis14, thanks for taking the time to share your feedbacks.
Regarding Court Hussar: I like the card and I used to play it. But, after playing UW Midrange, I think that Spell Queller could help us to interact better against a lot of decks. Moreover, there is a soft lock with Spell Queller & T3feri. Also, you can always play a Queller and flicker it after. Last but not least, I think that with Charming Prince / Wall of Omens and Thraben it may be enough draw cards.
Don't get met wrong, I agree that Court Husasar is powerful card engine in this deck but I am trying to build a more proactive version that can put pressure on the board while having some counters thanks to the blue splash
Regarding Flickerwisp: I prefer Restoration Angel as it's more versatile : defense/offense depending on the situation, soft lock with Queller and Teferi, can close a game quickly, can save and restart a Gideon, etc
Regarding Detention Sphere: you might be right, I am going to see where I can insert a 2nd copy
Of course all these choices have to be tested, I will test the deck this weekend and I will let you know.
Hey @kopikopabarcelona, glad to know you're giving the deck another spin :b
In regards to the deck it looks like a solid emeria build!
Never played with the spell quellers before because I always thought there wasn't much value in something that could be removed later, but with the Teferi soft lock and restoration angel seems interesting. Let us know how it goes!
I also agree that one or two more detention spheres make the deck better as a catch all response to anything they throw at you.
About the creatures I would probably trade the thraben inspector for something else as I think it's better used in conjunction with Ranger captain of eos. A card I really like and play in my builds is watcher for tomorrow. As if you have a couple of blink effects it can be used to great effect despite now drawing a card straight away.
In regards to the mana base, if you want budget options consider Prairie stream and irrigated farmland ;which I still run in my build with fetches and shocks). But as you said it's a work in progress so take your time
Hope you enjoy the deck and when you win some games make sure to post all the info here ;p

Edit
So I managed to beat Titanshift with the UW deck for the first time today. Dovin's Veto countered their Scapeshift, Detention Sphere answered their zombies from Field of the Dead and I drew my Field of Ruin, Ghost Quarter, and Crucible of Worlds for their Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle.

Hope you are doing well.
After playing UW Midrange for few months, I kinda miss Emeria Control and its ETB plays
I saw on MTGTOP8 that a list recently did a 5-0 : https://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=23249&d=359980&f=MO
Based on @Marinojuk decklist I tried to build a midrangy UW list (I basically cutted the rangers for Spell Queller and some Gideons).
As a returning player to Emeria do you think that this variant could be a good & competitive start:
Creatures:
4 Thraben Inspector
4 Charming Prince
4 Wall of Omens
2 Spell Queller
3 Restoration Angel
3 Sun Titan
PW:
1 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
2 Gideon of the Trials
2 Teferi, Time Raveler
Spells:
4 Path to Exile
1 Winds of Abandon
2 Dovin's Veto
2 Supreme Verdict
1 Detention Sphere
Lands (will upgrade the mana base each months)
3 Emeria, the Sky Ruin
2 Hallowed Fountain
2 Glacial Fortress
7 Island
11 Plains
Thanks for your help and happy to be back playing Emeria !
They are some of the best creatures in the deck and I never build the deck without them.
I'd also suggest playing more Detention Sphere.
Thraben Inspector is a weak card and it is only included in other deck because of Ranger-Captain of Eos.
Other cards which are debatable imho are Resto and Gideon AoZ.
It is not a popular idea but I consider Remorseful Cleric a potential maindeck inclusion.
It also saves slots in the SB as maindeck GY-hate.
Regarding Court Hussar: I like the card and I used to play it. But, after playing UW Midrange, I think that Spell Queller could help us to interact better against a lot of decks.
