Worship is actually really clever, especially in our deck! Why isn't this on the primer? (I'd like to give that a try actually)
(EDIT: Clearly i cant read as i thought it was 2W not 4W as a cost. Still effective but at first glance i thought it was something we could get back with Sun Titan...)
4 cmc of worship is not a problem. Not in a hurry to cast it except if I'm against a really fast Burn or aggro. Curve out like this.. turn 1 tapped land, turn 2 wall or seas, turn 3 wisp or hussar, turn 4 sphere or wipe if opponent has a dangerous board presence, turn 5 worship or angel.
Anyway, you can try. But pet cards that I use.. worship, baneslayer.. are for use against the decks that I face here everyday. The decks in your area might be totally different from the decks here. If there's plenty of Burn or aggro that don't have maindeck ways to remove resolved enchantments, Worship will be effective against them. Sometimes causes people to overboard on enchantment removal game 2, even though I removed the worship with something else from the sideboard.
Forgot to say in a previous post. The one worship in my deck is a flex slot, and I've been trying all sorts of cards there.. batterskull, kor cartographer, archon of justice.. but since the local meta right now is full of dredge, phoenix, and many other aggressive creature decks. Worship is currently the best card for the flex slot.
This is by far my favorite Modern deck and most fun I’ve had playing Magic. Looking forward to picking it back up and joining the thread! Very happy to see it’s still going!

Modern Decks: UWAzorius Titan ControlUW BWOrzhov ControlBW
Martyr's Soul was spoiled today. I was having a back and forth with my friend about its relevance to our strategy. He thinks its bad but I feel it could use some testing.
My thoughts being:
It synergizes with Emeria, the sky ruin or Sun titan (when it swings) which nets us a free 5/4 at the start of the turn (or start of combat respectively).
Using flickerwisp or similar shenanigans we could prob get the 5/4 also (with some finagling).
I was thinking convoke could be sorta relevant to drive down the cost to make the card a bit more playable. Varients of the Deck that make tokens using Blade Splicer token generators could benefit a lot. (thought then again if your using splicer it might just be better to use that as a win condition)
Just thought I'd spitball... The card could be total garbage.
Thinking about the cards we’ve received from the War of the Spark and excited for the new Modern Horizons. I’ve been looking at WAR and what we’ve got at UW, and it got me to thinking about what this deck is trying to do and what makes it unique. Correct me if I’m wrong, but we’re looking at a few different things when evaluating new cards:
* Emeria, the sky ruin- finding our namesake and getting it online as quickly as possible
* Sun Titan- finding and safely playing our powerhouse value engine
* Filling our deck with 1-3 cost creatures with powerful etb value
* Focus on control- deck filtering to find answers and manage the board
On top of evaluating cards in this light, I also have to ask, do these cards do something better than what we already have, and if so, what do we take out?
From my assessment, the following are the cards from WAR that can be taken into consideration (note: this does NOT mean they are good. Only that they do something that relates to the above stated focus of our deck.). If anyone has tested or has any thoughts on the cards, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
I agree with you on all your points save for worrying too much about resolving a Sun Titan. Our deck is super inevitable focusing on protecting Emeria, the Sky Ruin and getting it online should be a #1 priority. Titan is definitely a win condition but its much easier to get him out off of Emeria than actually straight up casting him. We shouldn't worry too much about resolving a titan from the hand as he can always come back and close the game out for us later.
That said though you are completely correct in asserting that Sun titan is an ABSOLUTE UNIT. Literally the definition of value, if you do have an opening to play titan play him but just don't worry about it too much. I've won quite a few games without him ever getting to hit the field.
I haven't tested out all the cards on your list yet but i do have some thoughts here and there if i may:
Gideon Blackblade- [TESTED]; Tried him out in MTGO and I found that unless we have another creature already out that can provide damage to benefit off of his +1 (since its only for the duration of the turn and he cant target himself :c ) Gideon of the trials is kinda just better. Id use blackblade if only to have two Gideons on the field at a time for the Gideon emblem's pseudo worship effect
Teyo, the shieldmage - [UNTESTED]; I like the concept behind this walker as a possible sideboard card but looking at it hes not really that good against burn (which i think we would want the hexproof for) if only because the only protection he gives himself comes at a -2 which leaves him wide open to a bolt. you'd need something out on the field already to protect him or he'll get eaten by creatures too fast. (he'd prob be good vs decks that want to target you with spells like Thoughtseize or the like but against burn I'm just reading him as a 3cmc gain 5 life. A +0 for an emblem off of a Gideon of the trials does basically the same thing and Gideon has better abilities to stop damage sources than making a 0/4 wall.)
Tomik, distinguished advokist - [UNTESTED]; I purchased a few of these in paper to test. I like the idea behind tomik and love that hes got a cost of just WW but I'm hesitant to try him out as his ability is a bit too narrow. Maybe a sideboard card as a 1 of if were going to see a lot of land hate? (what decks look to actively get lands out of their yard?) as of rite now Id rather run Crucible of Worlds or sacred ground instead as they don't die as easily to removal.
Kasmina, enigmatic mentor - [UNINTERESTED]; Not because its 4cmc and i hate everything that's not 3cmc or lower (cuz as stated earlier makes titan a UNIT) but rather because like Teyo this really doesn't help us (or itself) unless we have a board presence already. In her stead id suggest trying Monastery Siege It's 1 cmc less, can be scooped up by titan, doesn't have a finite number of loot's, and isn't as easily removed.
Narset, partner of veils - [UNTESTED]; I never considered Narset before you mentioned her. I like her static effect a lot but the UU in her cost and the -2 I have conflicted feelings on. The former makes her a bit harder to cast (the version of Emeria I run its more of a gracious splash of blue than a solid 50/50 split so mileage may vary) while the latter has me concerned with accidentally bottoming creatures as those are the permanent (save for lands) we run the most of (usually) and need the most to protect us long enough to bring emeria online. She is good for digging up removal I will not deny that, but I'd rather get that satisfaction from playing a Court Hussar. (Which though digs 1 less deep lets me get whatever, not have to reveal what I just got, can stick around to chump, and has Vigilance which is why hes our OP MVP) and not have to worry about bottoming a creature I could of otherwise needed/used.
Dovin's Veto-[APPROVED]; LITERALLY AN AMAZING CARD. Combo is one of our (if not the definitive) least favored matchup for us. As we have 0 interaction and will be TKO'd by anything that doesn't need to be on the field to kill us. Dovin's Ban (which is what I'll call it cuz its a completely missed opportunity) should be a 4 of somewhere in your 75. Use this exclusively against non-creature win-con's or outs your opponent plays (and never try to counter an opponents counter spell using Dovin's Ban as it 9/10 times a waste unless super dire.) and your matchups will be golden. I run three MB and never regretted it once.(https://youtu.be/XOcgDP7wQKc?t=1018)
Teferi, time Raveler- [UNTESTED]; I own a set of Teferi and feel he could be good for us in a bunch of different matchups. Not sure if he's MB material but I'm looking to try out a build with him instead of one of my two Gideon's I run maindeck and see how that goes.
Time wipe- [WOULDN'T BOTHER]: We don't really mind sweeping out our entire field and most times we don't have one because of all the chumping we do. Needing to pay 1 more means we have to take a whole extra turn of damage and I would not want to wait 5 turns to boardwipe against hyper aggro decks like humans.
Dovin, hand of control- [UNTESTED- PROBABLY NOT]; (also picked up a few of him) One Sided Thalia could be super brutal but again his -1 is a strictly worse version of Gideon of the trials +1. Could be used as a SB card but 3cmc is slow against decks we'd want to run this in. I've been having success using Damping sphere to provide a similar albeit worse version of his static effect. If anything just stick with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, She will put opponents off attacking with their small creatures more because of her first strike.
Blast zone- [NOT WORTH IT]; I ranted about this in an earlier post but the TL;DR from me would be: "The earliest time we can get off Blast zone is T4 and it costs us a land on top of the cost of a wrath. at this time we would only be hitting 1cmc permanents (or 2 cmc if you devote a turn to pumping it) and if we are to devote that many resources to leaving stragglers behind (and not even ko'ing tokens) I would much rather use a Wrath.
Wall of runes- [UNTESTED- PROBABLY NOT]; I purchased 4 of this card because I love the idea of a baby Wall of Omens but honestly our list is super tight on space as is already the only reason we run wall of omens is because it replaces itself (and doesn't die to bolt.) Scrying doesn't really provide the same efficiency/effect as drawing 1.
That was an excellent breakdown and exactly what I was looking for. I think this kind of analysis will only help to strengthen our understanding of the deck and it’s place in the current meta. Here are some of my thoughts in regards to the cards prior to testing:
Gideon Blackblade- I would consider him a one of in the MD, not to replace GotT but rather to compliment him. At face value, we’re looking at a 4/4 indestructible for three mana that can make all our creatures better while taking apart their most important pieces. This satisfies nearly all our criteria and I’m interested in seeing how I can fit him in my build :).
Teyo, the shieldmage - keeps us alive and halts burn at 3cmc but I don’t think this card does anything better that we don’t already have. I believe there are cards that are more efficient and sturdier that we can use instead.
Tomik, distinguished advokist - sideboard card at best but an interesting one. I’m keeping an eye on him in case he becomes useful later in the future. I’ve played against land decks that utilize the graveyard before but not enough to warrant his inclusion currently.
Kasmina, enigmatic mentor - this is a control card for sure and definitely an intriguing one as it makes the opponent spend more resources taking out creatures we’re only going to get back. I don’t like that it’s 4cmc though and if that’s the case, it needs to satisfy at least one more of our criteria to be considered in this deck
Narset, partner of veils - a nice bit of control for only 3mana is nice, however I feel our creatures and lands are way more valuable to us in this case. Our lands and creatures are our main source of answers. This card would be better for us if we could place cards in the graveyard instead (to get back with emeria or crucible).
Dovin's Veto- I don’t need to elaborate already as I feel we’ve reached a consensus on this card. I already run 2 in the SB.
Teferi, time Raveler- Very interested in this card! Against UW control, this swings things in our favor massively. This card essentially switches our position from tap out control to a more classical UW style of play to hold up spells. Not sure how good it will ultimately be but definitely needs a closer examination.
Time wipe- I like the thought of wiping the board, saving my wall, and playing it again to start my rebuild and protecting myself. But 5 mana is a lot and it can be countered. Not a fan.
Dovin, hand of control- this is alright, a 3cmc bit of control. I don’t think it does enough to push our game plan though and not worth the look.
Blast zone- I get the appeal, particularly in other decks, but this is not what we want. I wouldn’t waste a land slot for a limited wrath that you need to put additional resources into. Doesn’t further any of our game plans other than slightly gaining more control.
Wall of runes- ‘lil wall of omens. It’s nice that it’s one and I’m a fan of the scrying ability. Is scrying better than drawing a card? I think it depends. Both allow you to dig deeper while one gives you an immediate payback. I think wall of runes is better early while omens is good throughout which is why omens gets the nod for me.

Have you looked at Ashiok, Dream Render? You didn't mention it in your earlier post but I think it warrens testing as a possible SB piece for graveyard hate? The UU is kinda killer but a "-1: target mills 4" and all opponents exile their libraries slapped onto a 3cmc Mindlock Orb In a format that relies so heavily on fetches looks like something we could try against other decks that use their yard. (I'm just a fan more-so of that one sided exile graveyard effect. Everything else is just a bonus)
I actually had her in my original list but removed her. Here are my impressions:
- I like her static ability as it’s a more effective one sided Leonin Arbiter
- I like that it’s 3 cmc but don’t like the UU cost
- the minus ability is great against graveyard hate but I wonder if it’s effects will be too slow. Generally against graveyard decks you want something like that down sooner to stop their combos before they get rolling and have the chance to be countered.
- The more I look at it, the better it seems to me but still not sure for some reason. it seems like a solid card but not sure if it’s better than what we currently have. Still, worth a look for potential SB slot

Narset, have tested this. And was good enough, cripples decks that want to cantrip a lot. Although only as a single in the main, because not have much space in the deck and double U is sometimes hard to do. Not yet included in primer due to insufficient testing.
Ashiok - is a sideboard card. As there are games where it is amazing and some games where it is useless. Not tested enough, but was good for me. What is everyone's experience on this? I have heard from other people that he's good against Amulet Titan, but there's no Amulet Titan decks here so I cannnot test.
Gideon Blackblade - have not tested him. Would include in primer if enough people find him useful.
Blast Zone - just like some in our neighbor UW control thread who found this land useful, I too have found it useful as an extra tool when things go to the grind. Still have a rating of 2 in the primer though, as not enough testing has been done. So far, it has removed a death's shadow from GDS, and a thing in the ice mid-late game against UR phoenix. Late game when trading resources with GDS and they are recurring their shadows with Kolaghan's Command, I'm thankful to draw the Blast Zone instead of the Ghost Quarter that it replaced.
Wow... does this blow away Court Hussar? Bazaar Trademage its a 3/4 with flying doesnt die when its recurred...its drawback would mean the deck would shift a little like maybe crucible becomes more prominent or something.
A bolt proof threat that blocks arclight phoenix without dying. He's also only 3 cmc, so the synergy with titan revival is there. However, he draws two and discards three so we gain no cards from this guy if cast with 1 or less cards from hand plus the trademage. Hussar gives us a card no matter what our hand size is. However, I'm of course still open to testing Bazaar Trademage as a one or two of. Just have to think what to cut. If ever I'm using this guy, he would be in addition to hussar.. not a replacement for it.
@Natesroom You come in here... to this sacred place... and speak such blasphemy against our lord and savior!?
Bazaar Trademage and Court Hussar serve two entirely different game strategies. The former provides us a valuable board presence but at the cost of an additional card (figuring we have a hand when we play him) while the latter provides us an avid defender while replacing itself with one of three relevant cards.
The way I look at it (and the way I play the deck) Bazaar Trademage is good early game but really poor late game (unless we have emeria online that we can throw creatures to) Our deck is designed (least i believe it to be designed) to slow down the game and play off magic's system of attrition. Our topdeck game is super strong with all the cards we run that straight up replace themselves and benefit us in keeping a small card advantage over our opponent who will effectively run out of steam at one point or another. Bazaar Trademage (while strong) does the inverse of this game plan.
If our hand is any less than 2 cards (three if your including trademage itself) we are essentially playing a 3/4 flyer with "whenever this card enters the battlefield discard your hand and mill 2" comparing that to court hussar not only is his effect better but flicker effects work for extra synergy.
In my honest opinion Bazaar Trademage isn't better than Court Hussar (not much is tbh) but I wouldn't put it past you to give him a go.
to people who have tested Gideon Blackblade, please tell me what decks he is good against.. and I will include him in "alternate card choices" in the primer.
I’m definitely going to be testing Gideon Blackblade this coming week and perhaps even Teferi, Time Raveler. I’ve also been taking an overall look at this deck compared to the current meta game. Right now, the top decks in modern are as follows: Humans, Tron, Jeskai Phoenix, UW Control, and Dredge (Burn and Amulet Titan are close behind). With that being said, is there a thought to changing up our creature suite to accommodate this? Any 3cmc and below cost creatures with etb effects that can switch over? For instance, if burn isn’t prevalent, do we change Lone Missionary for something else in the meantime? Just something to think about.

Looking forward to your Gideon and Teferi testing results.
If you feel it is not needed against the decks you play against, all the missionary can be changed to something else. Sadly, there isn't much 2 cmc with good etb effects. Remorseful Cleric could be put into the main if you think missionary is not needed. RC has no etb.. but it has a useful ability of emptying the graveyard against the faithless looting decks, and it flies so it can be used to do damage on the opponent who has blockers on the ground.
About the new Modern Horizon cards, what are your thoughts on Giver of Runes and Ranger-Captain of Eos?
I think giver is cheap and nice to protect specially sun titan once he's out, and Ranger as a powerful 3 drop that fetches Giver of Runes and can stop control, combo, and even tron from deploying their greatest threats. Thoughts??
A few thoughts on this:
- why the green splash? Genuinely curious. I feel that makes you more vulnerable to land hate and makes Field of Ruin less effective. Also do you have a decklist? Interested in seeing your build as far as creatures and spells as it may change the gameplay dramatically compared to UW and make my opinions irrelevant
- early thoughts on my Teferi, Time Raveler is that it is great against control and most combo/spell heavy decks. I’m still debating if I want in in the MB or not as it is a terrible draw against most decks I’ve faced. In UW we are mainly tap out control focused and don’t have many spells that benefit from his plus ability. It’s really his static that shines in control matchups.
- being UW, I can’t really have an opinion on Glittering wish as I’ve never used it
- what would you replace for Giver or Runes and Ranger, and is that switch worth it? With Ranger, you’re using a three drop as a potential tutor and to delay a combo deck for a turn. Giver offers protection but would be negated by most our board clears. Usually when piloting this deck, I’m more concerned about getting Emeria online first and Sun Titan after. I can lose a game even after resolving a ST, Emeria is pretty much gg.
