I'm guessing they're trying to say that since both come into play tapped and you can't afford too many lands that always come into play tapped, they take up the same 'space' in the deck.
I haven't tried him out in this particular control deck, but in Esper/UW/Nahiriless UWR he is an absolute beast. Definitely one of favorite planeswalkers.

UWGBant EldraziUWG Decided I don't like Todd Stevens decks.
I like gearhulk in pure control decks, but as an addition to 4x snapcaster, not a replacement. I also think Serum Visions is still worth running, and 6 conditional counterspells seems excessive in such a longrange deck. What were your matchups?
In other news the new gideon that got revealed today opens a lot of possibilities for UWx control I think

Yes, I think it's a very interesting possibility, though I'd be inclined, at least at first, to lean UW with Gideon Jura and Elspeth, Sun's Champion. But a UWR shell could also work, perhaps; just heavier on the W than R.
Yeah, UW could definitely work, just as Esper. People have already been jokingly talking about "12gideon" as a deck, but I can definitely see combining Trial Gideon with Gideon Jura to buy a huge amount of turns.
I suspect gideon will work alright in emeria/titan control decks, but I'm not sure cramming him in UW or jeskai "normal" lists will work out too well.
He's kind of lackluster given that he dies to so much (bolt, decay, pulse, path, etc), but maybe I'll be wrong.
As Foretold is one of the funkiest designs we've had in a while. It gives an IMMENSE tempo boost... but over the course of many turns, and the longer a game goes the less tempo matters. You also need a very large amount of card advantage to keep your hand full (which frankly, isn't that much of a hurdle with free AVs). It is comparable to Vial, but Vial costs only 1 mana, making the tempo boost relevant as early as turn 2. Casting a cmc1 spell for free on turn 4 however isn't that relevant.
I love this card and I will be brewing with it, but if free AVs is the only thing it does it's just going to be a flash in the pan like Day's Undoing was.
Failure to Comply is really interesting. Card disadvantage, but you essentially get to Reflector Mage a spell.
It's an interesting card, but I'm not sure it's better than Remand for a control shell. If we want a temporary counter effect, Remand seems like the best option. It draws a card, and when flashed back, draws a second card. And it can, in the right scenario, be used on our own spells for further card advantage. It's the most flexible option.
Reflector Mage was great in Standard because Standard is creature-dominated, it is a creature and can apply pressure, and it can be hit off Collected Company. Failure // Comply doesn't have those benefits (nor, in Modern, the same context). And while it is more flexible than Reflector Mage, it's less flexible than Remand. IMO, this is sort of a Remand / Silence hybrid that seems better suited to combo (or maybe some sort of UW 'aggro' shell like UW Taxes) than control (if in Modern at all). But I could be totally off -- time will tell.
He's right though, there aren't really any "can't be countered" cards that are relevant to us. Creatures off Cavern of Souls is all I can think of
It is an interesting card though. Clearly a tempo card, not a control card, but nevertheless. I've played Reflector Mage exclusively in EDH where the 2/3 body is entirely irrelevant, and the tempo swing can get very close to basically two time walks. Imagine stopping Karn, Primeval Titan or Thought-Knot Seer for two turns. Even turning a turn 2 Tarmogoyf into a turn 4 Tarmogoyf is a very big tempo swing.
That's indeed what I'm about to do for my next upcoming tournament. Still thinking about what to cut for it.
Generally speaking I think the Mana curve isn't perfect in UWR due to the huge whole in 3 CMC. But CMC 4 just gives us Cryptic, which i see as a playset and board wipes as Verdict and Wrath. I'm playing two main and a Wrath in my SB but i could think about switching/reducing. So I guess it's fine with 5-6 cmc 4 spells. Sorry I'm not really into the math either. I just count remands, leaks and electrolyzes as buying time to be able to cast cryptic and it just works. But for numbers and math I kindly recommend you to read Frank Karsten's various articles.
..well i guess the hole at cmc=3 could be translated to snapcaster+1cmc (bolt, pierce, visions).
yeah, i did read most of Karsten`s articles on this but it`s really hard to figure it out since we have to quantify all the card-draw until turn 4 and take into consideration mana-quality (triple U for Cryptic) so without a good mathematical understanding it`s really hard to figure out.
I'd rather play Fatcaster Mage. Cryptic Serpent is better served in a deck like Grixis Delver, where you tend to see a lot of cards. I've never known Jeskai to have that kind of velocity.
Not sure if I should start a thread or I should start posting here, but I'm getting back to control and I'm running UWR draw-go with a black splash to great success. Comments are appreciated!

Also the emblem combos quite nicely with Pact of Negation

Why would we ever care about Abrupt Decay?

how many cmc=4 spells do you think is best for a 24 lands build ? i`m leaning towards 5-6 but i don`t know how to do the math ;-/

Is this a serious question? Because I'm not sure why you wouldn't play something like Disperse instead.
