How do you guys feel about playing 1 Prairie Stream over the 2nd Hallowed Fountain? I know it's been tried before, but we don't need as many white sources as we did when we played Gid of the Trials and 3/4 wraths.
Colonnade -> Island -> Plains/Island/Field+activate -> fetch Stream seems Ideal.
I asked this already in a dedicated thread but didn't get that many responses so I figured I might ask people playing the deck directly. Here is the short version of it. Im a returning player who left shorty after the AV/Sword unbannings but now I want to get into Magic again. I am an online only player and I can either get Jund or UW Control but not both. I have already played both decks in the past so I know what Im getting into.
So how do you guys see UW Control positioned currently and in the foreseeable future? Is it a good time to get into the deck?
And lastly what happened in the last two years? When I left UW/x Control was always kinda there but never really in the spotlight and at the top but that seems to have changed.
Before ixalan, UW exists as a "UW ponza" deck with spreading seas and such main. It was fine, considered an alternative to jeskai, but not better.
Then ixalan gives us search for azcanta and opt, dominaria gives us teferi, and wotc gives us jace.
Coupled with other bull***** like hollow one being a deck now, humans being a deck now, spirits being a deck now, hardened scales being a deck now, hollowvine being a deck for a minute, etc, terminus became not only a real option, but actually better than bolt + verdict.
On top of that, we got ceremonious rejection in kaladesh, and damping sphere in dominaria, which lets us actually beat tron some amount of the time without having to play mainboard spreading seas and the like.
The deck is still weak to dredge (all control decks are going to be), which is somewhat problematic at the moment, as well at weak to combo like storm, ad nauseum, valakut, etc, but you're generally good vs the aggro decks, and good vs the midrange decks, which make up a pretty hefty amount of the format.
Jund is also seeing a resurgence due to trophy being printed, but I'm not as sure how lasting that will be.
I think UW is better positioned moving forwards, as even if it never regains its dominance of the past few months, there will likely be a snap/jace deck around the top of the format for the forseeable future.

I think that, for the moment at least, Jund isn't in a great place (idk why, I don't play it). I personally think that UW has been getting better and better and and it definitely has to do with a few cards in particular: Field of Ruin has been a huge boon to the archetype that people never seem to mention, but it's been a very nice effect to have and playing 4 has been a main draw for me to play UW over having any splash color. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and Search for Azcanta have great, and the Jace, the Mind Sculptor unban made miracles both playable and a top contender. But before all of these, there were also some 4 Spreading Seas/4 Field UW lists with Gideon of the Trials and friends that even made tier 1 for a little while, so UW has been pretty good for a while. If you were to buy into UW, I almost guarantee you will have a playable deck in some form, and splashing R or B is pretty easy once you have the core.
Not to hate on Jund, but I feel that its Abzan and BG counterparts aren't on the same level as Jund is (at least until a SFM unban), while both UW and Jeskai are most certainly playable, and Esper is alright but has seen better times. So, competitively, UWx gives you more customization.
Field of Ruin is a funny mention because I also thought it's just another Ghost Quarter effect but after seeing it in action in few games I watched I see now the value it provides.
Funny question. If you guys were to play a build without Terminus, what would it look like? Would you be on Spreading Seas? Mainboard Settles? I've been testing around with the Terminus builds, but I completely abhor Opt and other options, such as Hieroglyphic Illumination, and I've never been particularly impressed by Jace either (even though I own a few copies). I mulligan away Terminus far more often than I miracle it!
I only really play locally, so I figured I can just play what I want. Here's my current list:
Hey, guys, I've recently built UW Control (always loved the concept, and with JtMS and Teferi, I finally admitted that I am a Control mage at heart), and I wanted to ask you all a question or two.
I only really play at a local store for now, and so far I've gone 2-1 twice. I've beated 4C Shadow, Storm, Hardened Affinity, and BW Eldrazi & Taxes. My losses have been to the same guy, on Burn the first week and on UR Arclight the second week. Obviously, hyperaggro is a bad matchup for us, but I was wondering if there are any small changes I can make to adjust the matchup a bit, especially as I expect to play against him often, and by his own claim, he would never consider a Modern deck that didn't have 4 Lightning Bolts. Other than that, I've seen Elves and another UW Control player.
Other thoughts, I'm interested in Entreat the Angels, but I haven't played the deck long enough to balance out how many win-cons we need. I also got to Crucible-lock my E&T opponent, and would welcome a maindeck Crucible configuration if it weren't so bad against hyperaggro (which I assume it is). The only place Supreme Verdict looked better than Settle the Wreckage was against 4C Shadow, so I could see swapping the Verdict into the SB and maindecking Settle.
I'm thinking eventually someone will try Dredge; I also assume two Surgicals aren't enough to comfortably handle the matchup; is 4 RiP justified? I can't really tell what I'd cut in my SB; I think I might have too many counters in there, but I can justify having all of them in the side, except for maybe the Negates.
The list was from a month or so ago, so I'm not sure if there's been significant growth in lists since then. Any general improvements would be welcome.
I'm going to Gp Team unified Liverpool, having in mind the meta expected will be combo, this is my list. My seat its on the right, i hope you can give me your opinion.
So, I've mainly been a GBx guy, but have owned the UWx staples for years. Took half a year off from MTG, but Jund feels poorly positioned despite last week's SCG results. It also feels kinda low on raw power.
Tried UW Miracles on MTGO last night in the practice rooms, and really was pleasantly surprised, Azcanta, Jace, Teferi and Terminus almost feel like what thoughtseize, Goyf into LOTV was years ago. The deck was surprisingly forgiving, too. Jeskai during the Geist flavor fad felt more difficult to pilot than this.
Didn't do anything too crazy with the list, but I am looking for a good 75 despite how different they can look---trying to find a common factor in successful decks.
Against non blue mirrors the deck didn't feel as slow, azcanta and the planeswalkers really drown people out. I do worry about playing these mirrors in a big tournament, though, as it would require very fast playing by both people.
Either way, really impressed with the deck, feels like how I wish Jund was.
Hieroglyphic is still being tested, hasn't been too bad though, at worst it's a bad opt and in slower matchups it's a nice in-between AV.
AV seems awful unless the meta really slows down, and stuffing 1 random AV seems like poor deck building.
Terminus feels SO busted.
I do wonder why some people are low on Azcanta, the card feels busted.
I don't know, outside of something like burn or storm the deck really feels like THE 50/50 deck. But I just picked this thing up.
24 Lands, 4 cc1 cantrips is simply wrong. You want to hit your landrops in the early game.
Care to elaborate ? I'm just curious about your thinking on this topic. For instance, I run 4 Opt, 2 Serum, 1 Ancestral Vision and 2 SfA and it feels ok. I'd like to have 2 AV, but no room for it :/
Gonna try something a little different tomorrow. Cutting the fourth Cryptic, as that seems to be what everyone else is doing (even though I adore Cryptic). Also throwing in an Entreat to try it out, and moving Crucible to main because the LD plan seems to work more often than I thought. Moving away from Heiros for the week, I haven't hated them, but U: Draw 1 isn't particularly strong, unless you know there's a Terminus on top. I'm not sold on Ancestral, but I'll try it out and see. I feel like I might make the move others have and swap the Verdict and Settle, to have Settle main, but I'll give Verdict another night to test.
That's fair. Last time I played with Purge was back in Jeskai Nahiri days, but I can see it being good with Shadow decks running around. I don't know if anyone at my place plays Jund, but I might call an audible and take something out for Purge, maybe the Stroke. I don't know if I really need the fourth piece of countermagic in the board for the mirror.
I've played my deck for two consecutive midweek tournaments now, the first week I went 3-0 against Burn, 8-rack (lucky Halo on The Rack) and Merfolk. Last week was worse as I played 1-2 against Burn, Arclight Storm and Boggles. After that, I changed my deck and now it looks like this. What do you think?
Has anyone played with Isolate? Obviously a very narrow card, but I am thinking it could be a good sideboard card in some problem matchups, namely: Aether vial decks (spirits, humans, etc.), burn, infect. While being serviceable against: amulet, bogles, ponza, lantern, death's shadow (maybe hardened scales?).
Speaking for myself these decks represent a large portion of the local metagame, including some of the tougher matchups for UW. Being able to cleanly answer a turn 1 vial or hierarch would be worth consideration, no?
Just curious whether anyone here has tried it out.

Ideally you don't want to care about the aether vial and you would rather just use a removal spell to deal with the threat they bring in on the vial, this is what allows you to go deep into those games and have some virtual card advantage. Something like Oust is much much better against the problem creatures out of those decks. Being able to hit Teeg, Thalia, Selfless, Great Revel is invaluable and will make your Isolate look very silly.
Sure it has some additional application against those other decks you mentioned, but I don't think its enough to make up for the downsides I outlined above.
In bullet points:
1) Burn is tough matchup, so that's why I have 4 lifegain effects in the side (2 BA, 2 Timely) and nothing mainboard (aside Oust which could tuck back either Snapcaster Mage or Vendilion Clique to gain life in corner cases).
2) For aggressive strategies, BA and Timely work wonders against Affinity, Dredge, Humans, etc.
3) Against artifact based strategies, 2 Stony Silence is a must ; against graveyard based strategies, 2 Rest in Peace is essential also.
4) For combo matchups, I bring in 2 Dispel, 1 Negate, 1 Surgical, 1 Damping Sphere (if appropriate) and 1 Disdainful Stroke (again, if correct).
5) For Tron, there's Daisdainful Stroke, Negate, Surgical Extraction and that's it. But then again, there's a lot of mainboard land destruction.
There's only in my opinion Celestial Purge that could be a flex slot. I'd like to have something for Tron (Crucible of Worlds maybe) and for Scapeshift at the same time. I feel weak against big mana strategies. I was pondering over maybe 1 Aven Mindcensor, but it would feel odd (same thing for Shadow of Doubt).
Any criticism is welcomed and I'm looking forward to any discussion
P.S. My mainboard is stock : 2 Snapcaster, 2 Vendilion Clique, 2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor, 2 Teferi, Hero of Dominaria, 3/1 Terminus/Supreme Verdict and 4 Cryptic Command.
How do you guys handle Titanshift? It seems really hard to be able to answer all of their threats while also putting enough of a clock on them before manual Valakut triggers kill me.

Out fo the sideboard, I have 1 Negate, 1 Disdainful Stroke and 2 Surgical Extraction. You could fit in Crucible of Worlds, Aven Mindcensor, etc. The clock comes in the form Vendilion Clique (I have 2 maiboard). So flashing in Snap and Clique is very helpful.
