Actually, i'm not so excited. I was 50$ short from completing my uw list and start attending local fnms with it. God knows how much i have to spend now for an updated list. Thinking of selling everything back.
Dude(ette) its fnm, play what you have and go have a good time! You're not spending $800 to build a modern deck to go win $20 once a week, you're spending that to go have a blast of a time with your fellow nerds. play Jace, AoT and sling some spells. Just play what you have and work up to them overtime, who knows, they may re-ban it in a few months if it just starts dominating too hard.
I was happy with the place the deck was in and I'm also not looking for a complete revamp of the decklist. My first thought was just replacing JAoT and grumbling that I only have one JtMS right now. I didn't even consider miracles until Annihilator brought them up. (But that's why I'm not a competetive deck brewer).
Now I wish I got a second one when they were cheap(-ish) after Eternal Masters came out.
Or how many do we run? A full playset?
I think 2 is actually a pretty safe bet, maybe 3. The better question is do we consider playing miracles now?
Miracles is super interesting but it will still suffer from the same issue the current list has which is getting terminus to miracle in the first few turns. Not having actual brainstorm makes me think it'll still be just a fun deck from time to time but I'd love to be proved wrong.
I'm gonna start with 2 JTMS since that's is what I have and see how my local meta is adapting before committing to a third after A25 is released. My question is if red gets more attractive to splash for lightning bolt or if another d-sphere is where we want to be in the sideboard do help with the increase in walkers.
It sucks, IMO. Wizards wants to sell the Masters 25 packs at any costs. The best way? Unban Jace and unleash hell. I have only one for duel commander, a format that I don't care anymore. Maybe Im gonna to sell all the stuff I got too, and play Teferei at Standard Dominaria... and a ps3 with DBFighterZ, haha.
Everything you say is totally fine, except for the fact that my fnm playgroup consists of older players (30-60 years old) who are very competitive and always have top notch decks. They are good and friendly and you can hang out with them, but they like to win. Everyone who has been there with a budget deck or with incomplete lists, never had a good time. Unfortunately, it's the only gamestore close to where i live. Other than that, fnm was going to be a start for me. I would love to attend higher level tournaments at some point. For now, the updated list with JtMS is out of my budget.
Kinda pissed, to be honest. Have to rethink about the whole decklist.
Me too.
Well boys, it's been fun discussing the nuance of the 5th colorless slot, or the 4th spreading seas. I suppose we can have some interesting conversations again in a couple months once the format starts to adapt to it's new overlord.
Well, you can see it two ways: Or they unbanned jtms to sell boosters or they reprinted jtms because they planned to unban it and if it was the case, it needed a reprint to keep the prices from skyrocketing. I agree with lantern, but maybe other decks will emerge and lantern will keep being a t2 deck. Also, i don't think jtms deserved to be banned, it's a very powerful card in a format with lots of powerful cards. The only problem i see with it is that it may become be the finisher for every blue control deck - a bit like twin was - but other than that, i think it is pretty fair.
Aaron Forsythe has previously said that if Jace were to be unbanned, it would have to come alongside a reprint. That, combined with their statements in the article, make me think that they had been looking at Jace for a while, and knew that this would be their chance to unban if they wanted to.
Do you think one Jace, the mind sculptor will work?.
The deck is going to be fundamentally different, I wouldn't be too concerned with how to shoe horn Jace into the archetype.
For instance, because of the ability of Jace + Fetches to put back dead cards, it's likely that we want more fetches, which then makes.it easier to splash a color, which might be important because Lightning Bolt punishes opposing Jaces if they choose to brainstorm as well as protects our Jace from new hasty threats. Once we go down that rabbit hole, how many of our colorless sources can we keep? If we drop below 3 do we keep spreading seas? With 8 fetches can we play more copies of legendary cards like Azcanta or trials? Do we still want to run Sphinx Rev, or should we move towards ancestral vision since they can be shuffled back with a brainstorm?
It's way too much to consider on day 1. Like another poster suggested, I highly recommend moving to a linear strategy so that you can beat the heads in of people trying to figure out how new modern looks. I know I'm going to be casting a lot of goblin guides and lightning bolts over the next couple months.
On Jace, I'd look at old standard lists and old/current legacy lists and figure out if you want to concede the tron match up. Legacy Miracles has a horrific cloud post match up. Wall of omens becomes much better than seas. But field of ruin is still good since it shuffles and hits man lands, which there will be more of. I could see a list playing mono negates, ancestral vision, a bunch of creature removal, cheap cantrips and other hard counters, with 3-4 Jace. Just trade a bunch, refill with visions and then win with Jace.
This was a kick in my left nut. I was just selling my Jeskai stuff to try to go for UW and now I think Jeskai will probably be the "go-to" U Control strategy in Modern since Bolts are likely gonna be required for fighting opposing JTMS.
Now I just don't know what I'm supposed to do. Do I spend a lot of money on one or two JTMS? What if they ban it again? That doesn't seem unlikely. Jace seems to have power enough to dominate the format.
Not to mention the changes that our deck is probably facing from now on. I would probably have to sell some of my Jeskai stuff to acquire one or two Jaces and now I don't even know if I won't need these stuff. I don't mind playing a Tier 2 or Tier 3 deck. But I really don't want to just play something strictly worse than something else for lack of money.

I would highly suggest not buying or selling anything right now.
If you can afford buying a couple jaces, and expect to be playing with them, it might be ok, but we know they're getting reprinted, and the price will be at its highest over the next couple of days.
Its possible they'll ban it, but it seems kind of unlikely. I have to imagine they've tested it enough to know it won't immediately have to be banned in 3 months.
That being said, masters 25 releases in a month, which will hopefully tank the price. If wizards isn't already on top of a second release wave, they'll likely be aware of the need soon.
Considering jace won't even be legal in modern for another 2 weeks, playing whatever for 2 weeks + a bit while the price drops is probably not going to kill you. Re-assess then.
I just traded for cryptics, bought 2 snaps, 2 search for azcantas, 4 spreading, 2 detention sphere, 4 flooded strands, 4 celestials and some other stuff for this deck. Should i continue finishing off the deck with the cheaper plainswalkers and play it until jace becomes cheaper? I was so excited to try this dec. But now im a tad worried. I also wonder if this deck would want 4 jaces. The gideons seem to have more of a board impact. Jtms seems doesnt seem to be too great in current fast meta that features so much aggro. Also could 1 or 2 be ok? Thanks for any thoughts
I find it difficult to believe that once the meta settles, any deck will play 4 jaces. Its possible, but 3 seems like the cap for most decks, and 2 is quite possibly going to be more common.
That being said, it depends on what you're looking for.
If you play to play this deck after jace drops (buying jaces) then owning everything else and getting to play in the mean time seems reasonable.
If you don't plan to ever buy jaces, selling out/trading for another deck might be smart, but its likely you'll want to wait until the meta shakes out. Of course, if you just want to play something else now, then selling out now is fine.
Hmmm I really want to play it. Blue is the only color i have never played in modern. I guess i will run the older list this week. He cant even be run this week anyway. Im still waiting on some of the cards to get to me i bought em so recently so selling out aint an option anyway lol

The expensive pieces you listed are going to be used in ANY UWx control deck you want to try so there is no lost money there, and a lot of the spells that alter decks are pretty cheap, just the core pieces are pricey. I can't imagine any deck other than some miracles brew would want 4 JTMS, I think in the current iteration of UW we would want 2 since we still have cryptics, verdicts to fight for the 4 mana slot.
As far as fighting against Jace I'd look at increasing negate numbers as well as d-sphere to compensate for other control decks playing our new overlord. Pithing Needle in the sideboard would be straight gas if you're not willing/able to shell out for JTMS. Jace is also pretty weak to the gideon walkers that see play in UW lists so haveing Gideon of the trials and Gideon Ally I'd put those in and just beat down on JTMS while also affecting the board against aggro decks trying to prey on people.
If you don't own JTMS right now, DO NOT BUY until after its reprinted in A25 and honestly even a month after the reprint. If you look at any of the maters sets price histories the major cards like Noble Hierarch, Fetchlands, Tarmogoyf, etc.. drop over the course of a month or two til they bottom out, then slowly creep back up.

I like it. Im going to stick with it. Sick of linear decks anywaY (i play tron, DnT and burn normally). Uw should be a breath of fresh air
Jace won't be legal for 2 weeks (after the gps coming up) and will be reprinted 2 weeks after that.
As the dude said, waiting a little while after the reprint is good. Its very likely we'll see a big second wave of printing like we did mm3/unstable/others, which may help keep the prices down further.
If you don't own jaces, you might have a rough couple weeks while a lot of other people have jaces, but it shouldn't be too big of a deal, honestly. A lot of people may be trying to take advantage of the jace hype and play cards/decks good against him, so by not having him you may be inadvertently dodging some hate.

He's legal in paper on 2/19 so a week from now, depending on your local game store modern days though it could be closer to two weeks.
