So this is my attempt on the deck and it plays really good vs moderndecks - beside that I lost every match vs Standarddecks (Jeskai Control, Grixis Control) which wasnt that great... but I had a lot of fun
I have some questions:
- Ensnaring Bridge vs the 4 Goblins // Hazoret // Sarkhan Ultimate
makes me feel quite uncomfortable... does it work?
- is the Eidolon really that great? Used to run in in my Burnlist where it was really good but in this deck i dont know.
- One of Pyretic Ritual - whats the benefit of it?
Hello Walker! First off it’s awesome you picked up the deck and welcome! So now let me see if I can answer some of your concerns. You have 8 Goblins, a Hazoret, and two Sarkhans that can all attack, your question about the bridge is warrented. But with the way bridge was created, if you’re empty handed your goblins aren’t forced to attack, and when you eventually have a critical mass of them, you can save the card in your hand during combat, and then swing with all the goblins for the win. Hazoret plays like a planeswalker and slowly kills the opp while also being incredibly hard to kill, the only major cards able to kill it being path to exile or lilianna of the veil. And since path decks are on the downswing, and we have goblins to sacrifice to liliana, you can usually assume she’ll ride out the game. Sarkhan is a different story. He’s mostly their to fix your draws into something better, but if you do find yourself ulting him behind the bridge, you can keep using his rummage ability to find one of your two Abrades to destroy our own bridge and swing with lethal!
Eidolons are basically the 4th lock piece. They help us against Storm, KCI, Burn, Tron, any deck that runs Arclight Phoenix or Thing in the Ice, and any deck we want to be aggressive against, (control). It is a great card until you’re behind a bridge, but most of the decks we bring it in against we will cut some or all bridges.
The one of Pyretic looks out of place, but in reality it’s ritual number 9, it simply gives us another copy of Desperate Ritual and Simian Spirit Guide, and helps with explosive turn 1 and turn 2 plays. The one of Gemstone Caverns you’re does less in the deck than the Pyretic Ritual does, abd I’d highly upping the Genstone count to (3).
I hope this answered all of your questions and I highly recommend going back and reading past posts, all of your questions have been answered a few times and many more questions you haven’t even asked yet. There are also other decklists and cards to test, and sideboard discussions and guides to help with bad matchups!
Sorry, new to the deck, why is Eidonlon good against burn?
Am afraid that your own eidolon may end up locking up yourself?
Would some kind of sweepers better in its place?

I’m glad you asked AvalancheRiders! You’re right in questioning the Eidolons against burn. The reason it works is that they won’t lose us the game unless we play an ensnaring bridge, but in a situation where you have an eidolon out against burn you wouldn’t play the bridge anyway! Eidolon gives us more pressure against burn since every single spell in their deck will become a shock to their face, and also allows us to have a blocker when It gets close. At the very worst it gets hit with a lightning bolt or they have to block it with a goblin guide or an eidolon of their own, which essentially turns it into a 3 for 1, as it shocks them, and reduces the amount our face would’ve taken. At the very best against burn, it can win us the game, either by providing a win con or by giving us time to find a chalice or moon to lock them out further.
Hey! I also played Rabble at GP oakland. I went 7-2 Day 1 and made day 2! I won my first game and was 8-2, but had a really bad streak after and just missed cashing at 10-5.
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
1 Hazoret the Fervent
4 Legion Warboss
4 Simian Spirit Guide
4 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
2 Abrade
2 Anger of the Gods
4 Blood Moon
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Desperate Ritual
4 Ensnaring Bridge
1 Pyretic Ritual
3 Gemstone Caverns
14 Mountain
1 Mutavault
4 Ramunap Ruins
Sideboard:
2 Anger of the Gods
1 Boil
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
2 Ravenous Trap
2 Sorcerous Spyglass
1 Spellskite
2 Torpor Orb
1 Trinisphere
I took extensive notes and was planning on writing it out somewhere if people were interested! I brought the deck to prey on U/R Phoenix, but while I did beat a few of them, I lost to the red variants. We have a bad matchup vs good KCI players. Triple ee and trawler loops breaks all of the locks. I would have skewed my board towards these.
Good work! Very interested to know what you have faced in the GP.

Will these cheeky words prophesize a birth of a dominant R/w Pyro Prison architecture? Will they? Nahhh, I doubt it. Heh heh. Shadowrider created the blending of white into 'The Stock List' to gallop into a Top 8 finish in a Saturday Classic, 100+ competitors, a couple weeks ago. And, I saw another couple pilots score 5-0s with similar lists - including our Russ Colosi.
A Flash in the Pan or a deck that's here to stay? Well, as always, that depends upon the meta. I fired off (4) tournaments yesterday: 0-2, 3-2, 3-2, 2-3. As the day drew on, I tinkered with the deck construction. It ended up being different than my previous posting by the following numbers:
MAINDECK: [3 cards] MINUS Chandra, Torch of Defiance, Lightning Helix, Legion Warboss ||| PLUS Leyline of Sanctity, Pyretic Ritual, Pia & Kiran Nalaar
SIDEBOARD: [3 cards] MINUS Leyline of Sanctity, Worship, Deflecting Palm ||| PLUS Dragon's Claw, Spellskite, Dire Fleet Daredevil
The improvements were marked and expected. Mainboard: I already identified Chandra/Lightning Helix as my 59th/60th cards in need of upgrades. And, Pyretic Ritual? C'Mon! You know I can't quit you! You're back, baby. Sideboard: Dragon's Claw addresses omnipresent red. Spellskite is the same thing & redundancy for locks, plus it's a horror vs. Titi. Dire Fleet Daredevil is straight up a devious selection that capitalizes on the heavy spell decks that are everywhere. Honestly, if I had this construction in the early tournaments, I definitely think I could have swung an extra win in each round.
So, this is a R/w Decklist, right? Then, where are the white cards? Maindeck count: 1. ONE? Well, in defense of Leyline, it IS a helluva choice. Besides, I was running Witchbane Orb in the maindeck for a while. To be fair, Engineered Explosives could be considered a white card, and it has been gangbusters. Well, is white worth it? Hmmmm. The answer is found in the sideboard. Enough? Well, maybe. White mana requirements severely hamper smooth land development. The recent adjustments may make a powerful case for R/W, but I'm going to rule in favor of..... MONO-RED PYRO PRISON.
This is what I've been thinking open to suggestions. Not 100% on the sideboard yet. I like the main. Only switch to that might be switching the Chandra in the board for the Koth in the main. I had thought about the "Light up the Stage" build that Fluffy had a few weeks back but I feel that I could play the traditional style pyro prison a bit better.
Hey Ray, I love what you have been doing with the place. I think you and the crew here have finally pieced together a solid build that can close within a reasonable amount of time. Here is what I have been trying out on MTGO.
EotGR and Harsh Mentor are the key cards the deck was missing post Legion Warboss's release - for me at least. See, if we fail to lock AND stick an early active threat we typically loose as the game progresses. And, if one of those pieces is absent or is most likely removed we also loose. But, with a static threat our opponent's job just got a lot harder due to a higher threat density. I know feel that we can win within a reasonable amount of time so long as we have two of the three deck components i.e. lock, active threat, or static threat. Now, I just have to buy the dang thing in paper all over again. haha
Do you or anyone else have suggestions for the SB?
As for that Boros version? I cannot believe you are including color Ray! More colors help, like my Gobots went from Mono-Red to Gruul to now Jund...but it took 4-5 years and a thousand matches to get to that conclusion. lol You see, I needed to answer a specific and broad type of threat that caused me to go green and black. Green was included to handle Midrange, but that same color has garnered even more dynamic options. And, black was included to handle Aggro in a dynamic way. What is it that Mono Red cannot answer that you need to alter the core of Pyro Prison so much to gain access to White?
Michael Margelisch posted a top 8 finish at the MCQ in Strasbourg over the weekend. Very promising. I’m like 80% to play something very similar to his build at GP LA. I see that he trimmed a ritual and I may follow the same lead, but contiuning to trim 2 moons in anticipation of seeing loads of Mountains. I’m gonna stick to my guns and leave the Molten Rains in the side because they’ve gotten me out of so many jams. 3 of top 8 at MCQ Strasbourg being Rock is kind of disconcerting and I still hate our chances against blue control decks, but I love that it’s consistently putting up numbers.
@Dfray85: Looks pretty fit to me. The Chandra, Torch of Defiance in the sideboard seems askew though. If possible, I'd 3 and 1/2 Chandras in the main deck. Heh. But, seriously, shaving off the 4th into the sideboard in games 2 and 3 is very common. So, I'd recommend a better silver bullet card to come in from the sideboard. I do agree with you that the "light up the stage" experiment was not successful overall - stick with the tried and true.
@Spec.ops: Harsh Mentor. You mad man! 4 of them! Well, I will say that you have slammed down our answer to Hardened Scales Affinity...finally. I don't know if I see him lining up with a whole lot of other threats that give us a headache. Lantern? We crush it. Maybe Tron could take a kicking if you land a couple of these early. Any artifact deck will suffer. Hmmmmm...worth considering. How's the win ratio?
As for Boros....yeah, dude. You've been around for a while, and know that I've shunned any splashes. Rule of Law was the one card - in this meta - that finally made me consider that there is enough white hoser cards to consider the splash. The Verdict? And, bear in mind that I friggen tried and tried. Nope. There just isn't enough offered in white that we can't source up in Red or Artifact. Damn. What was I thinking!
@RayStack: The win ratio is going pretty good actually. Tron used to be my boogey man. Now I beat as easily as I do with my Gobots...just not on turn three. lol I have a few recorded matches and I could easily record more an post them on my Gobots channel. Thoughts?
But, back to Harsh Mentor. In theory he seems to work and in practice? He works as intended. He draws a lot of ire from opponents since he can net 4 to 6 damage or more if they do not kill him. Every fetch becomes a shock and it adds up. Depending on the combo they cry. Because of this, he is dispatched shortly. But, but the best part is that there is less hate for my gobos and they do not compete for the same cmc allowing me to curve into them which is so so so very nice.
Haha yeah we both have. Well look at this way, I would rather the brew master be doing his job i.e. on the cutting edge of jank to genius brews allowing the community to enjoy the rewards. lol But, if you want to color splash, I have learned that red has a love affair with green and black in the hyper aggro decks. But, this is control, so my look back in the past isn't so applicable. White seems like it should be a perfect fit for more control, but we do love burn slow burn in pyro prision...looking at you cindervines.

I strongly suggest bringing all the moons to a GP. While you're probably correct in thinking you'll see alot of mountains, Jund and Tron will be there in force like always, as well as Rock, GDS and Amulet, and we need all the moons we can get. Also, like Stickballruss always points out, the paper meta is more static than online. People play what they like and what they have. I'm not saying you won't see alot of Phoenix, but you will see a much wider field than online. If I was preparing for a GP, I personally might consider a Magus in the side along with the 4 moons in the main. Either way, good luck!

Thanks for the advice Raystack. As of right now the 4th Chandra in the board will probaby be dropped for a 2nd Spellskite or a Magus. I've got until tomorrow morning to figure it out.
Been messing around with the deck again; out of curiosity, what are our worst matchups?

Thanks, Cali! Yeah I may be underestimating how many free wins Blood Moon will get...maybe just bump it up to 3 moons instead
I’ve been meaning to try out Jaya but can’t get myself to cut one of the two MB Hazorets. They’ve just won too many games, especially against red and black decks that have no way of removing her, that I can’t imagine a fragile 2/2 being better.
How's the control matchup? Seems like you just want to be on the aggro Rabble plan. Chalice on 1 should be good, but the other lock pieces (Moon/Bridge) not so good depending on the mana base of the control deck.
You're correct, all out aggro is the plan. In the case of UW you keep Moons in, even if you can't lock them out you can keep them off of W/UU/UUU, which is big. chalice is medium, but shutting off Path is helpful, then it comes down to dodging Teminus. The goal is to slow them down and kill them before Teferi shows up, or at least have a diverse board state before then, otherwise tgey get to a critical mass of answers and it's about impossible to recover. Bridges and sweepers go out, Eidolons, Spyglass and Boil or whatever you're running comes in. If you have more aggro (or something like Combust) in the side you can lose the Abrades as well.
So next sunday there's local modern tournament where winner gets Badlands. I made slight changes to SB since there was loads of creature based decks in the last FNM.
I was super happy how the MB played out in the matches, but my question this time is: Is Chandra much more superior than Koth? I could't fit him to SB and would like to try him out. Considering swapping him to one copy of Chandra.
For your Koth question, I used to play Skred, which is where he was really able to pull his weight, but I'm not so sure about Prison. Koth works best when your land base is almost entirely mountains. Prison, on the other hand, relies a lot on rituals and guide to cheat cards into play. While Koth can help with acceleration through his first and second abilities, the extra mana from your rituals is generally better used on a lock piece; Chandra is also more versatile, as she can "draw" you a card or add free mana to tick up, act as emergency removal, or end the game with her ult. Koth's ult is slower and requires a huge number of mountains to be game ending, which is not a guarantee with our manabase. Hope this helped!
