Welcome welcome to the fireside WKASA1. congrats on your first place win and interesting Choices in sideboad. Currently some of us have been using avaricious dragon to do the same thing as flame for keld for the first 2 lore counters. Maybe flame ov keld is something to test out though hmmmm....
And for Dazza0187
Fluffywolf2 is Fluffywolf2 on twitch je streams pyroprison 3 times a week on Tuesday Wednesday and Friday. Sometimes Saturdays on mondays he does a for fun deck. Times starting at 6:30 central time he has a YouTube ad well though I dont know it.
Stickballruss is also the same on twitch yis schedule is more erratic both great to watch for learning lines and play for the deck and we welcome everyone in. I think rayatack streams too but I csnt recall his twitch name though I'm going to go with RayStacks
didn't remember about avaricious. it actually combos both my Bottled Cloister and FoK. i might need to sit down and solitaire with it. i don't play on MTGO anymore, so i only run once, maybe twice a week. 95% of my run, is just sitting by myself and solitaire alone. =(
Russ, your main is 2 cards off from mine. I'm really loving Sarkhan as well. His rummage is well appreciated. Even the Dragons have been more impactful than I expected, and it feels great to Abrade Bridge on end step to unleash the hoard. I'll be keeping him around a while.
Also a shout out to William Asa! congratulations!
What's your 2 card difference?
I run a 3rd Abrade over a 2nd sweeper and I run a 2nd P&K over Koth.. otherwise it's the same. The 2 Sarkhans used to be Chainwhirlers.
Welcome WKASA1! Glad to have another great pilot on the mountaintop!
I completely.iased the win on mtgtop8. Nicely done William, whoever you are. Please, if you are a reader of this forum, let us know. Would be great to get a tournament report.
He's actually the RW prison FB group I'll ask him if he wants to join the forum was chatting to him yesterday.
Thanks for the connect bro.
No worries mate always good to have new mountainfolk!
Hey guys, I just got forwarded here from Facebook, at the recommendation of Darren Broit. That is my list on that http://mtgtop8.com/event?e=19755&d=327164&f=MO list. I work from home and can't exactly provide more info, but I am new here. Wish I knew more about this page, but you'll definitely see more of me. Always down to bounce ideas about this deck. This and Mono U Tron are my go to's.
Welcome welcome and welcome. You've already figured out the secret to this deck, and it's personal customization. Ray, fluffy, me, and now you have all had success with this deck uaing very different strategies. What counts is that the choices are well thought out and there's a specific plan for the cards used. This is a great community and we're happy to have you. FoK? What? That's a card we haven't tried, and yet, here you are, taking down an event with it. Can't wait to see what else you brew up!
Not the most top tier strategies, but some good matches nonetheless.
I've also recently been experimenting with Sarkhan in the deck, but I've honestly found Karn to me be a bit more powerful. Really digging how it's running and I'll see how i go next week I guess...
Also: Have many of you played or had much success against Grishoalbrand? In your opinion what's the key to beating this deck?

Yes, heavy aggro, lite disruption. Not the other way around.
Winning Pyro Prison decks all over creation lately. Roflsoz delivers a kickin' with a 5-0. Moonsteak just got a 4-0. Stickballruss nails a 5-0. And, of course, WKasa1 tromps down the face Mt. Rainier of the Pacific Northwest to smash a 71 person event into complete submission.
What is WKasa1's story? How did you come across your deck design? It seems so similar to what's been developed here - did you see a list online somewhere and brew up your own variant?
As for the changes you intend to make, agree: abrade is probably a wiser choice than magma jet these days, but vintage versions of this deck have succeeded with (4) copies of MJ. Michael Villa hit a Top 8 in a Starcity Games IQ, 3/19/17 with a Pyro Prison deck that had 4 and that card you mentioned testing out: Hammer of Purphoros. Pleased to hear you're pumped about joining the clan's discussion - check out the Official Primer & skim through some older posts to follow the progressions.
Here's Michael's Top 8 Deck http://www.starcitygames.com/decks/112406
Indeed, Avaricious Dragon may be a wise consolidating single spell of your choice of Bottled Cloister and the (2) the Flame of Keld - free up spell slots. I'm having success with the fella as a 2-of in a hyper fast variant still in development, Trash Dragons.
-Base of Spells-
11 Rituals | 8 4-cmc spells | 3 Sarkhan | 4 Chandra, ToD | 4 Goblins | 2 Pia and Kiran (nod to Caligula's alteration: I, like Fluffy, agree with The Parents as a 2-of // just silly strong value right now). The deck runs very, very little disruption. Just slams the accelerator, going Over the opponent, into Power Locks or Planeswalkers/Dragons/Dutiful Parents.
That's one of my Pyro Prison decks, and I do have a more traditional stock list in line with what Stickballistaruss is throwing down. Only (1) Walking Ballista in my current (75) though. Our man does love him the walking machine gun - I totally agree that it's a House with a HUGE back porch. I did grab a Top 8 in a 1K Event, 1/28/17, packing a singleton Ballista. http://mtgtop8.com/event?e=14579&d=287443&f=MO
Well, you got a lot of catching up to WKasa1 - awesome job - more reading and strategy chat to come!
As of 7/26/18, I was running 4 Abrade in the main, because my meta is heavy artifact based. Problem I kept running into, was I would always end up having to top deck half way thru the game. I wanted to generate card draw or some type of card advantage. That's why I went with Magma Jet. The Scry 2 and ability to hit to the face was enough for me to go 2/2 (MJ/Abrade). I plan on play testing tonight at Thursday Night Win a Box at my LGS.
Planning to run:
21 LANDS
3 Gemstone Caverns
14 Mountain
3 Ramunap Ruins
1 Scavenger Grounds
10 CREATURES
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
1 Hazoret the Fervent
1 Pia and Kiran Nalaar
4 Simian Spirit Guide
10 INSTANTS and SORC.
2 Abrade
1 Anger of the Gods
4 Desperate Ritual
2 Magma Jet
1 Slagstorm
19 OTHER SPELLS
4 Blood Moon
1 Bottled Cloister
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
4 Ensnaring Bridge
2 The Flame of Keld
SIDEBOARD
2 Abrade
3 Anger of the Gods
2 Damping Matrix
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
1 Scab-Clan Berserker
1 Sorcerous Spyglass
2 Torpor Orb
Only changes I made was to the SB, where I took out Boil for another Abrade. Kinda considering Shattering Spree. We'll see. Really looking forward to playing against KCI tonight.
Raystack - Most of my inspiration is from seeing the 5-0 lists. Then for some reason Douglas Wolf's Youtube page showed up on my recommendations and it gave me a chance to see it in play. I definitely want to pay homage to the players who unknowingly inspired me to play this deck. =D Fluffywolf2, Hatch22, FAdvisor82 were definite lists that I saw on MTGGoldfish, that I would take inspiration (steal) from. Then I just went from there. I wanted to adapt the deck to my play style. Card choices I made, are all cards that I felt had extra value and could be played in different situations.
Examples:
I love having Magma Jet in my opening hand, so it helps me line up lands or gas in the next few draws. But then it also combos well on the 3rd Lore Counter of The Flame of Keld. 4 Dmg is 4 Dmg.
The Flame of Keld has been pretty sweet too. Being able to unload hands in emergency as well, as well extra card draw the next turn. There's several games where I've found myself having Bridge out and I've had a couple of cards that I couldn't unload, then draw FoK and get myself out of harms way. But the best is when you've got Bridge + FoK + Bottled Cloister. Turn after FoK, you get to draw 4 cards!!! Also, with 3rd Lore, imagine upticking Chandra for 4 dmg, sending in some Goblins to hit for 3, in which they clear the board some, or get in for extra dmg. It's an unexpected haymaker that often hits for 10+
Bottled Cloister is something that's just a personal thing for me. I feel if an opponent is going to waste their artifact hate on it, I'm usually fine with it, cause any card that gets put under there, is normally a second copy of Chandra or land I couldn't drop and even when they destroy it, i still have zero cards in hand. Rather have opponent waste their removal on that, then Bridge or Chalice. Bottled Cloister for me, serves as a target for removal, card draw and combo piece for bridge.
Hello all! I’m in the process of building this deck as I enter modern (I’ve only drafted and played standard before). I was super excited to find this forum and see it active! I took another deck to my lgs this week (budget ponza) and found that there’s a lot of control in the meta. Do you guys have tips for figuring UW control? I assume chalice on 2 is super good, as well as blood moon. Anything I’m missing?

Welcome to the mountaintop, Padfoot! UW control.. hmmm..
The Eidolon/Scab-clan package is great against them, as well as Stormbreath if you're running him. Bring in creatures and Torpor Orb for sure. Boil is great here too, and if I KNEW I would see alot of UW, I'd run 2 of them for sure. Chalice on 1 is just fine, 2 if you can get it, but our main goal is speed. A fast Moon is great, but we're looking for early threats before they can just counter everything, and Chalice on 1 protects alot of our stuff from Path(or Bolt vs Jeskai, same idea).
You definitely need a board state attacking from multiple angles if you want to beat Teferi. Ideally, you want to have them almost dead by the time he can show up. If you don't have a good board before he does, he's almost impossible to get through. Don't let the PWs distract you too much though, if you can race them, do it. Stay aggressive unless you really need to take a turn off to keep them from ulting. It's easier said than done, fighting through all of the counters.. but we aren't heavily unfavored. Just get your Rabble on!
Hey, I'm Hatch22! Welcome to the party! What goes around comes around and I'm trying a list with 2 FoKs because I don't feel like I ever really gave them enough of a chance. Your list is really cool and congrats on the big win. I'm probably the most aggro-slanted prison player on the board here, but thats whats kind of cool about the deck. There's a solid core, but a bunch of flex spots that you can kind of tailor for your playstyle. Which you certainly have!
I'm also a strong advocate for 2 Boils in the board, but it is definitely meta-dependent.
Crazy Idea. So for those who don't know me. I am currently one of the few players who actively work on the Steel Moon or Full Metal Pyro list. This version has the worst control match up out of all of them due to conceding good threat count to artifacts for opal. tonight i was looking at a kuldotha rebirth list i used to play in standard... turn 1 rebirth turn 2 rabble turn 3 kill potential...

For those that don't know, I'm FAdvisor82 on mtgo. UW control is harder than jeskai control, but still decent.
Talking overall strategy, you want to be aggro here and close it our quickly. Full aggro and every decision you make needs to be with the goal of ending the game quicker. If the game goes 10+ turns, you'll lose.
Talking specifically from my list, I take out 2 slagstorm, 2 abrade, and 4 bridge.
I put in 3 eidolon, 1 hazoret, 1 spellskite, 1 torpor orb, 1 spyglass, 1 boil.
I usually win the UW match, including beating a player who was ubdefeated during the Philly classic. I was 3-1 and he was 4-0. With the right strategy, it's definitely winnable.
Many are playing scab clan berserker, and that's a fine card. I don't play it because I want a more diverse sideboard to deal with as many things as possible. Three eidolon and a hazoret has been good enough to transform into the aggro plan because it's a perfect 4 bridge out, 4 creatures in. Everything else is disruption to go with hard to answer threats, and it's been working great.
Going to be partaking in a PPTQ this Sunday and I'm not feeling good about my Tron match up. Wanted to know what your game plan, besides praying for Blood Moon.

So the main plan against tron is speed. when playing against them side out your bridges if they land wormcoil hopefully abrade and mom/pop token block sacs help. chalice on 1 is important stops their cantrips and maps. if you play matrix this is one of the match ups for it. stops ostone and map, blood moon is a great card and if you can turn 1 or 2 a rabble master that is most likely the best play you can make.
Going to be partaking in a PPTQ this Sunday and I'm not feeling good about my Tron match up. Wanted to know what your game plan, besides praying for Blood Moon.
Using my list, I take out bridges, slagstorm and ballista. Out in the 4 creatures, spyglass, matrix, spellskite and a single shattering spree. Need to be aggressive and if you have early pressure, then pressure first, moon second, u less they are going to have Tron in the following turn. Even without moon, turn one rabble can get the job done. Don't be a fool and try to hide behind a bridge. That never works....like ever.
How’s your experience vs Hollow One, Vengevine and KCI?
Was really considering sprinkling in some Red/White Buddy Lands and adding Rest In Peace and Stony Silence to my SB, just to test out at a FNM or something.

Similar to others against Tron we want pressure the longer a game goes the more likely for Tron to win. Fluffy mentioned something a while ago about looking at Tron lands in play and if a T3 tron won't happen you can play a moon a bit later. Really you want to get rabblemaster out as quickly as possible. A moon a threat and a way to stop o stone I have found are the key, unfortunately not much you can do about a wurmcoil on curve outside of abrade shattering spree.

Went 5-0 and played against:

Maybe
10 Mountains
1 Plain
4 Clifftop Retreat
3 Gemstone Caverns
3 Ramunap Ruins
Game 1, i don’t think this land base affects what we’re tryibg to do, but it’d be flexible for some white side board cards.

There are much better magic players who will comment on th
