If you choose to splash white, it is probably not a great idea to play Path to Exile, as you are essentially countering your own blood moons every time you cast it.
however, the sideboard options white offers could very well be worth the splash, but from my prior experience this hasnt been the case.
However, Grixis Moon was a thing for a brief period of time in the Spring of last year, it was actually one of the precursors to Chapin's Charlotte list. I'll see if I can find some decklists for you.
Played a flavor of this deck last night to moderate success (2-2). I played and lost against RG tron which was a bit of a surprise to me. I am on 3 moon / 2 seas config. The way I played it was to save my counters for business spells (Fatties and oblivion stone). Theres a bit of a catch 22, I felt. I need to land blood moon early but I also if I play it early the tron player can just follow it up with an oblivion stone. I sided in my vandalblasts but game 1 unless I'm bouncing with cryptic there is no answer for resolved o stone. If I wait to have 5 mana to play blood moon + counter he will have assembled tron already even on the draw and will begin to slam fatties / planeswalkers. To summarize, I need a fast clock, a blood moon, and counter back up, and all of this needs to happen by turn 3? How have you guys been approaching this MU?
I had a bit of experience with this deck. I splashed white and found that stony silence was a great turn 2 drop vs rg tron as it shuts down o-stone and the eggs they use for mana fixing and drawing through their deck. But I haven't played the deck for a while now and I am not sure how viable it is these days. I suppose vs all the eldrazi decks it isn't bad. I usually play UR storm and dropping a blood moon turn 2 on the draw was enough to slow him down. But my clock is a 1 turn storm approach with that deck. Beating down with a snapcaster mage and a few bolts naturally isn't quite as effective at killing.
Hey all. This deck has been on my radar for some time and I've been trying to decide on something to attack the current meta. I've played a lot of D&T and am quite familiar with that style of play (attacking the meta game I mean). I am thinking about moving to something like this simply because I feel like I need a deck that can run MD blood moon.
I was also thinking about a Boros bridge style deck. Somebody convince me that this is better.
the decks in my mind to beat are eldrazi, infect, affinity, and burn. After that are decks like tron, GBx, and then stuff like abdan company, fish, and whatnot.
So is this the deck for the meta?
I know it made a big finish lately so it seems possible.
what's the winrate against colorless eldrazi?
It seems like infect and affinity can be winnable with a little bit of siding. Is that right?
I'm really worried about burn. and you all seem worried about tron. Can we remedy a bit of this for W SB options? I'm talking about stony silence and leyline of sanctity. Or is it stupid to splash a third color in a deck that wants to punish greedy manabases.
Thanks a ton everybody!
EDIT: just thought of this as I was thinking about colorless eldrazi. So I assume burning people out is a line of play we can make, BUT against fast decks like burn or infect, this isn't really possible I'm betting. You're just praying for batterskull against burn in time, but what about chalice of the void in the side? It takes care of infect and burn pretty well, doesn't it? furthermore, what about damping matrix vs tron/ affinity to stay off white? I mean, it's not as good as stony silence, but it doesn't require a splash.
DOUBLE EDIT: sorry, been thinking a lot about it. a pithing needle effect might be nice against something like tron/ fish for the side. I also really love squelch, but it's probably too cute. Thoughts?
just a quick note to the guys jumping the band wagon:
be aware that this is a meta deck. as soon as people start playing it more often the meta/fetching behaviour/sideboards will adapt and the deck loses its punch. keep that in mind before buying in. this is not the successor to twin, blue moon is a good deck but at its strongest if people do not expect it.
While the deck looks cool, going to the same lgs with this deck is a problem I think, maindeck Blue Moons will lose it's shock factor

You could menace them by playing another deck that's begging to be blood mooned like tron or something and then switch to blue moon randomly. Keep 'em on their feet.

That just seems like an awful waste of money to whip out a blue moon deck once in a while. If a deck isn't consistently good, it's bad
I had a blast watching Chung control the board and kick ass with Batterskulls, but like I said, if the deck isn't going to be great all the time, why play this over Jeskai decks?
Roast seems like it should be in some number with the way the meta is going towards eldrazi. It also hits a lot of other relevant targets like goyf, tasigur, angler etc.
Sure they do. Path your guy on upkeep. Molten rain one of your few basics you just tutored up. It's fine. Definitely not great but I did it with pale moon when I was running that.
I am not sure whether less counterspells is the way to improve the new Eldrazi matchups (I am referring to the updated Chung list). I rather try adding two Essence Scatter to the board. For those testing Vedalken Shackles against Eldrazi, please let us know your results. This card is so slow. When can you expect to get control over something relevant? I rather would try Threads of Disloyalty to get control over a massive Endless One, which seems pretty relevant in particular after playing a blood moon.
I played a couple of games against UR Eldrazi with Shackles and it performed exactly as you would expect. When I managed to slow the game down a bit and fend off the initial onslaught, it was golden. Stealing their top decked Reality Smasher on a mostly empty board is lights out. However, tapping out for it in the early game can leave you vulnerable and a smart player might be able to play around it so that no matter what you do, you're gonna get beat up. I felt pretty bad seeing it in my opening hand, but it was nice to topdeck later in the game when I could either cast and activate it on the same turn or activate it and hold up a counter. My initial RUG list ran two copies and after two nights of playing, I shaved it down to one and the U/R list I'm going to test out also has it as a one-of. My meta isn't infested with fast, linear decks so it can still be a useful card, but I can't really see going up past the one copy.
To me, it's basically the quintessential one-of: when it's good, it's great; but when it's bad, it just rots in your hand all game long. Plus, it's just a card that I love lol.
Hello everyone. I am 115 games in with Blue Moon with a 64% win percentage. I've been making all sorts of tweaks trying out different cards and changing numbers around. I've been preparing for SCG Louisville. My goal was to find a way to update the deck in order to be better suited to fight eldrazi without giving up any of the consistency against the hyper-aggressive decks. This is the list I've settled on.
A few thoughts on my card choices.
I tried cutting down on spell snare and burst lightning but I was finding I was having a harder time against aggressive creature decks like burn and collected company.
I tried Jason Chung's suggestion of running 3 remand 1 mana leak but I found that I wasn't able to find mana leak often enough especially in more grindier games so it leads me to believe that a 2/2 split is correct. With less copies of mana leak and remand, our hands get less clunky when our opponent plays cavern of souls or aether vial.
I believe 2 Batterskull is correct. I tried the 1/1 split of Batterskull and Wurmcoil Engine but I found Wurmcoil Engine to be a lousy card in a lot of matchups.
I tried 2 Vedalken Shackles but I want a split of Roast and Vedalken Shackles since they both give you different ways of dealing with big creatures. I'd rather have a Roast that I can flashback with Snapcaster Mage when Vedalken Shackles isn't good in a particular matchup.
The Keranos, God of Storms is hit or miss. But I want a card that will be good in the grindy matchups that run path to exile. I did not like relying on Wurmcoil Engine as a late game threat when they can just path it or block and sack their creature allowing for no lifegain. Besides, it's such a unique effect that the deck doesn't have otherwise so it's just another angle of attack in order to put long grindy games away.
I would also like to add for those of you who are only playing 3 copies of blood moon, I believe 4 to be the correct number. When I ran 3, even though I had some spreading seas to compensate, I wasn't drawing blood moon by turn 3 enough. What I've gathered while playing this deck is that games go significantly different when blood moon is not on the table in a timely manner.
Any questions or comments are welcome.

I've been running a very similar list and agree with needing 4x Blood Moon in the main as you WANT to draw it by T3. But good Eldrazi players now dance around this by playing GQ and killing their own land in response to search out a Wastes.
Main deck, I've found Remand to be the weakest counterspell in the Eldrazi matchup as they can just easily recast their fatty next turn. So your 2/2 split seems good. Mana Leak and Spell Snare have been good. Spell Snaring a mimic early is good tempo play. I also play 2x Izzet Charms. Its flexibility has been good. I haven't bothered with Shackles as the game plan is to counter, shoot down creatures and stabilise until PKN and/or Batterskull come down.
For the SB, I'm using 3x Ensnaring Bridge. This in tandem with Blood Moon ensures a harder lock on aggro and Eldrazi players. It's kinda funny to see Eldrazi players play Endless One for 1 to get under the Bridge. They also use Ratchet Bomb to try to get rid of the Moon and Bridge. I SB in Keranos in for the win-con along with the Brides. PKN are great too as the Thopter tokens go under the Bridge.
I have found that sweepers between Pyroclasm and Anger do great work too.

I have been doing some more testing on the list we have been working on, and so far, you have been right about the 4 moons main. I switched that up to have easier T3 wins.
Personally, I feel like the only difference i have on our lists is due to the Keranos in the SB. I mostly play online right now, but eldrazi is EVERYWHERE, making abzan and other path to exile decks a rare occasion. I prefer having clique right now since it allows us to remain reactive while also checking to see if the coast is clear for dropping a moon/win con. But, that is really just meta-dependant
Alsox2, wurmcoil in my testing has just been too slow for us as a main deck threat. I agree it should be relegated to the SB when we are going all out on delaying the game against non aggro matchups (looking at you burn, affinity and infect!)
Alsox4, I have been looking into the burst lightning/spell snare/remand/mana leak split as well. while i agree that burst and snare are awesome against burn and abzan company, i feel like with 4 bolt, 2 burst, 1 roast, 3 electrolyze MD is a pretty heavy artillery against the burn/company menace. I may be changing my split up to 3/2/2/3 of of recent since mana leak is one of our real answers to TKS, Smasher, and other big things that players like to have on curve. Remand hasn't been pulling as much weight as it did in twin.
Other than that, loving the list as of now. I just gotta pick up my 4th moon and my list will be fully updated on paper, hopefully i can get some paper testing done as well soon.
*snip*

okay, i see a reasoning here. but how many games have you drawn 2 or more where it just wasnt good? would adding a loothouse (for the matchups you dont want them) or a izzet charm (to discard them) be a good idea?
furthermore, did you think about vendillion clique in main or board. finally, what about 2 roast maindeck and the shackles in the board?
Desolate Lighthouse isn't generally great as it's a non-bo with Moon and if you're looting to dig for Moons, it may already be too late. 4 Blood Moons just helps optimise nailing one by T3. Also, Blue Moon goes for longer game and its not inconceivable to cast a 2nd Blood Moon in case the Eldrazi player Ratchet Bomb's or World Break's away the first one. Has happened.
I've been running 4x Bolt, 3x Electrolyse, 2x Burst Lightning, 2x Izzet charm, 1x Roast. Tried Forked Bolt and while it did sometimes 2-for-1 2x Mimics, sorcery speed is just slow. Roast has been decent: taking out TKS is great but Reality Smasher is a painful 2-4-1 their way.
Anyone else tried jamming Ensnaring Bridge? Found it to be brutal in combination with the Moon. Even Burn players are looking to play 3x out of the SB.
Not in this shell, but been playing bridge in Tezz control for ages. One thing about it is you really gotta dump your hand out kind of early on for it to get online, and I can't really see it when packing cantrips AND high converted mana cost stuff. Not saying it's not doable, but it's certainly not with 3x Electrolyze, Remands, multiple Moons and P&K Nalaar and Batterskull that your Bridge is going to be online on time!

UR Twin - RIP

Will post deck list soon.
