I think I prefer Aether Twister to Aetherize. The problem with Aetherize is that, by the time you play it (which is usually as soon as possible), they're usually at a point where they can simply recast most or all of the things you've bounced, and so it just acts as a mana sink Fog.
Double blue is obviously constricting, and to a lesser extent the 5cmc cost, but I think it's both worth it and acceptable in order to create effect that hoses aggro as much as this thing does.
Also, sidebar from a previous post: I'm thinking about experimenting with bringing in +3 Silent Arbiter for -3 Solemn Simulcarum against aggro. I know three seems like a lot for a card that's bad in multiples, but there's no point in playing it against aggro if you can't ensure a high possibility of having it in your opening hand or drawing it relatively soon. Thoughts?

Silent Arbiter is an interesting idea. I think it's worse than Spellskite vs. Affinity, Infect, and Twin (if you brought in 'skite vs. Twin). I think Arbiter is better vs. Zoo and Pod. Arbiter is a nonbo with Aether/ize/Twister.

That's true, Arbiter and Twisterize don't pair well, but they're also two different approaches to dealing with aggro, and I so far prefer the Arbiter idea to bounce (until I experiment with Aether Twister). Upon reflection, I'm starting to think Silent Arbiter doesn't deal with with the types of aggro decks we see in Modern. Yes, Arbiter reduces the number of attacking creatures to one, but most of these decks (Merfolk, Infect, Affinity) only need one to connect once or twice (Merfolk to a lesser extent, but multiple lords affecting a single creature doesn't help matters).
BTW, another San Francisco Mono-U Tron player here. You sleeving it up to Eudo this month?
I know most people don't play it, but I've seen that shoktroopa/kharniverous has been doing very well with one copy of Gifts Ungiven MB (iirc going 14-0 the last three events he's played with it). Does anyone know what a typical line of play with Gifts is (ie. what's good to tutor up with it)? I like the toolbox utility and want to test it out for myself.
So I'm trying to force myself to play modern some more, there is a large surge of tournament activity in my area and I feel like trying the format out again. My first few attempts at getting into the format was basically just borrowing decks on mtgo and all the tier decks, at least in my opinion are boring as hell and more money than I want to spend. This deck seems appealing, it's cheap, and seems reasonably competitive, I also play MUD in legacy, which from my understanding of this deck play relatively similarly, I also already have altered versions wurmcoils, sundering titan and platinum angel so I want to play with my sweet alters. I just read the primer and have been testing the deck for the past couple hours and mindslavering people to death is sweet. I want to know if there are any tips you can share with me about the archetype and decklist (which I will post later) and generally just pointers about the deck and the format. I haven't played modern since eggs was a thing, so it's been a while, so any advice about the deck and the format is greatly appreciated.
Watch some streams to see typical lines of play and sideboarding plans, post your list and sideboard ideas, and we'll help each other in any way we can!
Shoktroopa's stream: www.twitch.tv/kharniverous He's testing Gifts Ungiven, is the deck's creator and has the most online results with the deck.
My stream: www.twitch.tv/nezeru I put up some paper results in pretty much every tournament I play in, but haven't taken the deck to any GPs or the like yet, though it's also made me about $1000 in prizes. I play a Trinket Mage package maindeck and prefer Fabricate to Treasure Mage in general, with Fabricate targets at every CMC up to 8.
There are others, but these two should be a good starting point. I have sideboarding tips that I posted a few pages back, not sure exactly which page though. I could repost them.
As someone who has played both MUD and Mono Blue Control in Legacy for many years, I can tell you that this deck plays more like Mono Blue Control than anything else.
At least, to have optimal success with this list, you need to play it like Mono Blue Control with a Combo finish. Stall with counters and chump blockers, and survive long enough to assemble your Tron "combo" and then play a big finisher.
Having said that, this deck is a lot more fun than either of those decks, and probably some of the most fun you'll ever have playing Magic (especially if you have a control mindset). Any deck that wins frequently with Mindslaver and/or fatties is great. The challenge of assembling Tron consistently is really fun too.
Hey everyone. I've been testing out Mono U Tron again and it's a lot more fun and competitive than I remember. It's comical how many Tier 1 lists this deck rolls over. Some much so, many opponent have said how terrible a matchup this is for them. I piloted GR Tron and Ad Nauseam for months. I switched from GR Tron because of the lack of control. I hated going in on one or two threats and having them get countered, snap-countered. I felt unless the opponent had borderline no pressure, I'd lose pretty handedly. I liked both aforementioned archetypes because they both have game winning nut draws/hands. Mono U Tron has a nut draw also, it's just a little slower, and I'm ok with that. I'd rather have consistency than explosiveness. I like how Mono U trades off heavy hitting cards for incremental advantage/tempo. I think this is the archetype I want to stick with. Combo-esque control. Plus, both of the old decks I played weren't dedicated to the best color in Magic. I must have been using recreational drugs for months. Anyway, I've been playing with Nezeru's list as well as his most recent sideboard. It's been performing quite well I can report. I've always been a fan of silver bullet decks. One not so Tier 1 deck that I've been having trouble with that's gaining popularity is UB(x) Faeries. I'm currently 50/50 against this matchup. But I wanted to know how you guys side/play against this type of deck. Please keep in mind who's list I'm currently using. Thanks in advance.
K thanks for all the responses, I'll look into the streams and try to post my decklist within the next couple days (really busy preparing for the 4th right now).
So in the month of June we had a combined record of 77-27. A few losses came by way of experimenting on a few cards but that is ok by me. I'm currently running a gifts to blow my opponents even more and because the value is insane. Hopefully I can get some things done today and be on in 20 minutes for the daily. I will stream it and keep a running tab on the overall record with mono U tron!
Lmfao, Does everyone play this in modern and MUD in legacy?
I, personally, try to stay away from two or more blue mana symbols. This deck is efficient enough with only one blue source needed.
Also, if my memory serves correct, if it doesn't say target, it doesn't target.

Nice, waiting for the stream then
Is there any way to compare that to other high tier decks without just hunting for wins and losses of other archetypes?

So, some stupidly powerful stuff being revealed out of M15 that I think we may want to experiment with.
Scuttling Doom Engine is no Wurmcoil Engine, but it has has an exit the battlefield effect that I would enjoy igniting with Oblivion Stone, or recurring with Academy Ruins.
Ensoul Artifact looks like a potential way to make our deck more explosive. Turning all those late game and since-useless Talismans or Expedition Maps into 5/5 beaters sounds like a good deal.
Scuttling Doom Engine is definitely worth trying. I'm not sure if I will use it over Wurmcoil entirely though. Wurmcoil's lifelink had frequently helped me stabilize from the bolt-snap-bolt range. Maybe play 1x Wurmcoil and 1x Doom Engine MB? (My list has 2x Wurmcoils MB)
Ensoul Artifact : If this is not a power creep, I'm not sure what is. Affinity will definitely get out of hand if this card is printed. Imagine turn 1 Citadel -> Thopter -> Opal -> Ensoul Artifact on Citadel -> 5/5 Indestructible on turn 1.

Repeal is gonna come in extra handy should Ensoul Artifact take off the way it seems like it might in Modern, and actually might make the matchup slightly more favorable, as they have to commit more resources into one creature that we can deal with individually.
Looking at it again, Scuttling Doom Engine probably isn't something we want, as neither of its abilities are particularly relevant to what we're doing and the type of game we play. We're much better off beating face and generating life with Wurmcoil then we are trying to sneak past 2 power or less blockers, and without trample. Dealing six upon death also doesn't really fit with our strategy, as we're not an aggressive deck looking for a finisher once they get within a certain range. We either Mindslaver lock, or control the game with and for Wurmcoil/Sundering/Angel beats.
Wurmcoil Engine really is my litmus standard when evaluating creature bombs to include our already selective creature lineup. If the answer to 'would I rather draw and play Wurmcoil over this' is yes, then it doesn't make the cut.
Hi everyone, longtime lurker of this thread, I'm going to share what I have right now.
I've been having lots of fun(because I love casting Eldrazis in modern) and wins with this deck.
I chose Eldrazis over Mindslaver just because I love casting Emrakul. I don't know the advantage/disadvantage of this, but there's joy in my heart everytime I hardcast Emrakul, take another turn and attack with Emrakul.;)
...yeah, why don't we ever experiment with Eldrazi in this build? I understand why we don't run Emrakul, as 15 mana is a chore even for us, but there are various other Eldrazi power-houses that are both affordable and can unrecoverably swing a game in our direction. Is it because we can't tutor for them, and have no ETB effects?

Not being able to tutor for them with Fabricate / Treasure Mage is a huge problem. Also, this deck makes alot of mana, but it doesn't make infinite mana. There is a big difference between 6 mana / 7 mana / 8 mana fatties and 11/15 mana fatties.
