I wasn’t trying to say I was racing to tron. The games I have had natural tron I usually win because I can drop a threat early and protect with counters. All the games that have gone long (20+ turns) I lose because my lands get destroyed and my opponent ends up with more mana to win exchanges.
Hi,
I've been a long time UTron player, and always used Shooks Decklist, except at first when I miserably lost to Burn and made a full EE / River of Tears approach...
I was used to great records, but the other day - long time I didn't play tron - I faced UG Vizier - a deck I was used to win. and lost as 2nd time to the same player...
NOTES:
I just didn't play karn
this time I opted to not to play the 3rd Spatial Contortion which I likely regret
I still play trinquet and no 2nd wallista
I think I made:
-1 Chalice, -1 Angel, -1 Solemn Simulacrum, -3 Remand = +3 Dismember + 2 Spatial + 1 EE (I have 0 Dismember in base and play already 1 EE in base)
my doubts are: Is Spell Pierce good against UG Vizier? should I take 1 Condescend out? can Surgical be good somehow?
Thanks in advance.

I agree, I was used to win this match up long time ago - I feel anyway that sometimes you are slower and just loose to a CC in resp to activation of EMap or because you don't draw tron lands or OStone/Ugin - I just play 1 each.
I neither play creature removal in base so all comes from side.
I thought EE were good vs UG Vizier... they blow up birds and hirarchs - but maybe it is too slow. which is the reason they are bad?
Is Pierce good vs them? I feel that sometimes they are better because you want to gain tempo maintaining U opened while doing other stuff - condescend on this purpose fails.

Fnm Report! Went 4-1 I won 1 of the 3 invitations to the pre release so great!
1st match 2-0 UB Fairies: He couldn't play bitterblossom on both games so ballista pretty much 2 for 1 every game into recursion chalice on 2 is pretty damn strong against them.
2nd match 2-0 Lantern: This matchup is very easy, he had thopter foundry + sword of the meek but chalice on 1 is gg + sideboard pithing needle and hurkyl's recall.
3rd match 2-0 Mardu pyro: We have a pretty good matchup chalice on 1 and counter pyro or reveler, ballista always makes a 2 for 1 at least.
4th match 1-2 Grixis Deathshadow: first game pretty straightforward chalice on 1 gg, second match I don't survive to discard and gurmag me to win. third game mull to 5 goodbye.
5th match 2-1 GWB Elves: I stole this match, turn 4 tron into ugin and on game 3 turn 5 tron into o stone, then ugin.
Hey I'm just starting to get into modern and this looks deck's looks a bit different compared to the others I've seen. What do you mean when you say "this variation"? Where is the original of that variation from?
Ah sorry my message was a tad vague, I meant that the list they posted was a bit divergent, running more counterspells in their main and only 3 creatures, with 2x or 3x of each rather than multiple one ofs.
How is Supreme Will performing?
I was playing around with my slots and it seemed weak, I moved contortion to the main to replace it but obviously I am risking facing a deck which it is dead against.
I'm a huge fan of supreme will, people never play around the mana leak side and the dig four-chose one is great. I also have it pair with the playset of dismember main so that probably a reason i can get away with it too though.
I ended up taking out the contortions (moving to the side) before FNM. It was surprisingly modern this week because the standard people were sleeping in before midnight prerelease. I wasn't ready lol I just made some paniced changes before the event when i saw a bunch of control players...
1-2 Humans
1-2 G Tron
2-1 Jeskai. (Actually went to time but since we weren't playing for anything we played it out).
Rip me. Each time there was at least one non game where one of us got mana screwed and died, most of the time it was actually my opponents.
The Humans game was extremely close.
Game 1 he got stuck on 1 land. Walking balista gg.
Game 2 Thought- knot stoped his attacks. I got tron.. then had nothing to do with it while a freebooter plinked away in the air. I drew trinket mage which I could use to ballista his whole board. He vial-ed in Malcontents to kill me. Game 3 I bounced his early plays Thought knot reveals 2x mantis rider + Reflector mage. I take a rider but he draws an image and he is hitting me for 6 in the air. I find treasure mage but he can reflector my plat angel.
Vs Gtron.
Game 1 Both have natural Tron. Remand Khan play mindslaver (with another in hand) he casts Ulamog instead GG.
Game 2 He never gets tron or even a 3rd land.
Game 3 I have 2x field of ruin but no tron pieces, basically I am playing a normal control, I try to keep him off tron but he still has 2 tron pieces forcing me to negate a map.. he reply's with a scrying and Ulamog GG.
vs Jeskai.
Game 1 He has two lands most of the game. Chalice on 2. Torrential gearhulk beatdown.
Game 2 My turn to be mana screwed I miss a few land drops I start discarding rather than play into his spells (keep up my own counters)
Game 3 Goes to time but whatever. Quick tron into 2x thought Knot Seer on Search for azcanta. He has commands but no 3rd blue. He gets to it with a field of ruin on my tron.. I re-establish tron. I just beat him to death with the Thought Knot while I keep him afraid of my full and (thanks to eot thirsts) eventually I win a counter war over a wurmcoil and he was dead.
I traded for some spreading seas (and a spell snare) with the Jeskai player who I hadn't seen at the store before. hopefully they will help with the Tron match up :s...

Supreme will is versatile against bad matchups who play spells with cavern of souls because you can Fast dig for a tron piece, so it's like speeding tron instead of controlling.
U tron may or may not have won the modern challenge this week on the mtgo. Hopefully the guy will write a brief report. Name was Shoktroopa I think. No clue who he is.
Do you really like River of Tears?
I don't play EE for budget reasons, then I use Field of Ruin + Edge + Quarters.
Quarters are really good because you can fetch it with map, and activate without paying its mana cost, its great against all the Colonades popping up
I like river of tears, it gives some minor upsides vs some other lands. It's one of our non island blue lands for choke/boil. Helps with EE for 2 and late game had minor upsides of letting us cast dismember for less life, if we haven't landed a wurmcoil yet. I think it's better than the niche interactions you get with oboro or other blue utility lands.

You’re referring to me or is it just a general thought?
My ‘stock list’ (aka, the one I would register for a GP if it was tomorrow) consists of 2 Engineered Explosives in the sideboard, 2-3 Dismember main and 1-2 side. As you can see, River of Tears is often crucial to set Explosives on two against things like Humans and Merfolks, and they also provide true life-gain in the mid-late, where I can afford to pay Dismember with their full cost (or at least half).
You cannot play three mana-denial lands in the mainboard. I use 1 Field + 1 Quarter main, 1 Tectonic Edge side, but you NEED at least ten blue mana sources outside of Maps. It’s already on the low side, and FoR is only half a blue. I considered several times to cut the Quarter in order to play another blue source (fourth River, that I like, or seventh Island). But, definitely, I like having two outs vs man lands and opposing Tron/Caverns/Boseiju.

OT.
I really wish for Twin to come back, holy crap.
I play a couple talismans to ramp a bit and fix the blue, thats why I use 3 lands. Then its Tolaria, 6 islands and gemstone, roughly making 10. Then i use another gem cavern side to swap with tec edge/gq.
Choices choices, local meta has been full of Ponza, thats why talismans have been good addition.
1x each talisman of black and white variety is a lifestyle choice. There is no right or wrong. You want blue sources though. "the car ran real good. I"m not sure what to do with my hands."

Just a quick question, how do you guys handle the hollow one match? I’ve been struggling against it lately, usually when there is a turn one inquiry.
I’m thinking about dropping some relics sb, but i’m not very sure.
How do you approach this match?
