I just set it as getting two "above average/very good" cards. The problem is that you cannot model each of these cards super accurately because there are so many special cases to consider, like for Thirst you would have to think about how sometimes you have dead cards in your hand and Thirst will give you 3 fresh new cards and let you discard the old dead cards. This chart is just a way to have some kind of visualization of the powerlevel of these cards but the calculation behind them are simplifications of what the cards actually do.
So vs Ad Nauseam stock list that doesn't run Lab Maniac I guess a chalice on 0 and a single hard counter to Lightning Storm are basically game over? I don't see any way for them to go around it. A second counter if they run Wear//Tear.
Alternative seems to be Jester's Cap, but I don't know if I dare tap out for it apart from turn 3 on the play if I have tron (when they shouldn't be able to pay Pact the following upkeep unless they played pentad prism T2?
jester's cap is solid against them. turn 3 tron for it is usually good enough to cripple them.
chalice on 1 is will mess them up hard, if you can land it. they want to thoughtsieze us, cantrip ([serum vision) and other 1cc, ontop of angel's grace.
I don't think jace would be very good for us (and it would be very good against us), we don't have fetches to shuffle away (maps and mages aren't as good). Fact or fiction reprint on the other hand.... honestly think it is what is really needed for modern control, I am supprised to find PVDDR agreeing with me.
mental misstep is a stupid card should never be unbanned.
1. Mental Misstep is not getting unbanned.
2. If it was unbanned every blue deck would play it, and some that aren't blue would also play it.
3. Jace would probably be okay as a 1-of but not amazing.
It's hard to search this thread but has there been any fruitful discussion of a heavier black splash? Urborg, River of Tears, and especially Talisman of Dominance being reasonable cards in a regular U Tron deck, maybe a splash for Fatal Push and some kind of hand disruption (IoK, Thoughtseize, Duress) would be useful.
Some implications of decks running 3-4x Talisman of Dominance:
-T2 you will want some kind of 1 mana follow up/interaction from playing a Talisman: Push, Dismember, Spell Snare, Spell Pierce, Serum Visions, Expedition Map. _Remand is not as good in this version._
-T3 should be planned around 4 mana.. TKS and Solemn might make a bigger appearance, with Solemn being less important since we should have better mana fixing. Having said this, Thirst + one of our high quality 1 mana interactions from before is still an incredibly strong turn.
-With more UU available Fat Caster is a very reasonable card.
Optimal lines:
T1: Interaction or Map
T2: Talisman + Interaction or Map
T3: TKS or (Thirst + Interaction or Map)
We can cut extremely fringe/bad cards like Spatial Contortion and Spreading Seas. Gemstone Caverns ends up accomplishing much more with Fatal Push/Dismember(bolt the bird) or Spell Pierce during our opponents turn. Sundering Titan hurts us a whole lot less with 7-8 non island sources of Blue. Slaughter Pact is another card out of the side can be extremely overwhelming for various quick kill decks to deal with and has a high power ceiling with Snap Caster. Ugin might move to a 2x, with 8 mana on T3 occasionally being possible and the wipe doesn't kill our talisman. OStone is somewhat worse, killing one of our sources... Having said that, 1x OStone seems so ridiculously strong I can't imagine cutting it. Perhaps EE accomplishes very similar things on 1 (and can more easily be used on 2 now with the extra color). All I can think of for now.
You call Spatial Contortion bad and want to splash for Fatal Push in a deck that can't trigger revolt...? Sure you can try it, I am pretty sure it's going to be bad though.
What 3 toughness creatures are you trying to hit that aren't cmc 2 or less? Also complaining about self damage when you only other option is taking 4 on the chin for Dismember is a bit bizarre.
How does Dismember enter into this discussion at all? It's not your only choice and curiously hasn't seen much mainboard play since Spatial was printed. And it's not only about self damage. You make your own manabase less consistent and easier to disrupt by Blood Moon and other hate. Using Talisman/Signets heavily will mean you have a *****ty manabase postboard against >50% of the format because every white deck plays Stony Silence, every red deck plays Kolaghan's / Ancient Grudge / Revelry.
Post a decklist perhaps so we can argue about more specific things... but one thing is obvious: your manabase will be significantly worse than Mono U Tron mana base and make the whole deck less consistent.
Hi everyone, just wanted to share an article I wrote about control decks in Modern. I've always been a fan of U Tron's elegant design, and I think the metagame context is ripe for it to make a move. Check it out and let me know what you think!
Played the deck last night and the mana felt extremely smooth. I probably need to buy EE's and remove the cute things from the Sideboard (Batterskull/Spell Snare/Squelch). I don't know why people are so down on serum visions, that card scryd away so many lands (flooding seems to be a constant complaint in your videos). Second Talisman was pitched to Thirst constantly and felt like 4x was never a problem.
anticipate is better than serum for us because blue sources are precious, especially in the early game. If we serum, we cant condescend, remand, or manaleak the same turn, and its also a blind draw as opposed to anticipate digging 3 deep. It also conflicts with our turn1 map plays, and can be hindered by our chalice on 1.
Looks like we got some coverage over on BlackBorder, though it's anything but a conventional list (seems to have borrowed a few cues from Eldrazi Tron):
Aside from that, the level of activity on here and the online success of Mono Blue Tron are generally about the same, and it seems to me that this deck has dropped off from the edge of tier 2 and well into the fringes of popularity.
Has anyone managed to put up many respectable results lately? I check the MTGO results over on TCG Player pretty regularly, and it's been a good long time since I've seen anyone 5-0 with U-Tron. The Twin and Pod bannings seriously hit our position in the metagame, and it seems as though we just never quite recovered.
So how are we feeling about maybe 2 spell pierce main board in current meta? I was thinking about using these because it seems to hit quite a bit in May past few weeks of play. Would help a lot vs thoughtseize which is in just about everything with black. Has anyone used these in past or currently? Would probably cut 1 remand and 1 repeal from pies list. Thoughts?

Why you board out maps on the draw v a lot of decks.
1. I always like to think outside the box.
2. Going 2nd, map does not get under t1 discard spells.
3. It gets hit by all forms of artifact hate when opponent gets 2 mana.
4. Most matchups on the draw we are more concerned with the board state rather than using our first 2 turns to find land.
5. Keep maps in v decks like tron or decks that don't have an easy way to eliminate the map t1 or 2.
