Is Ugin becoming an auto-include? (if so I need to buy him now before he spikes...lol)
I noticed that shok typically counters things just for the scry or the draw (or, at least it seams this way). Are there some loose guidelines for what/when to counter? I feel like I'm always holding counters in case they drop a bomb or something (perhaps this is the Legacy player in me). In Modern, do we just counter as much as we can early to gain value from remand/condescend and then land a bomb of our own? I mean, this deck is perhaps second only to GR Tron on dropping "I win" cards.
I just feel like control plays out differently in Modern and I'm trying to figure it out.

Supa_tim or some variation on most message boards. I was really involved in the old Wizards boards, mostly on the Legacy and Vintage forums. I leave and come back a lot.

hitting land drops is very important... ill counter anything if i need to hit a land, any land, not just tron lands. or general desperation.
the way to get good at u tron is knowing the other decks and what they play. its the only way to really be able to judge whether something is worth countering otherwise. i.e. if you have a remand in hand as your only counter and are playing jund g2. you probably won g1. they drop a goyf t2... who cares. cause t3 they will play fulminator or lili probably, and you want to hold up your only counter for that probably...
case/scenario stuff. play play play some more, play again.
also, ugin as been dropping in price cause its out of standard now. should bottom out at like $25 or so i bet. super cheap online.
I'm new to U-Tron, but I've become interested in the deck after the April update, given the rise in control and the fact that this deck goes over the top of control decks. I have a ton of cards that I wanted to play in the shell, but based on a bit of searching, I came up with this initial list:
I think this shell has my bases covered against the likes of Affinity, Burn, and Infect, not to mention anything graveyard-based (and has 4 sweepers to at least put up a fight against Merfolk, Zoo, and other go-wide aggro, which is probably this deck's worst matchup from my experience on the other side of the ledger). Thing is... I have a giant pile of cards that I'm interested in trying out, but I don't know what I would cut. The first category are mid-curve bodies like Batterskull, Bottle Gnomes, and Solemn Simulacrum. I opted for Silent Arbiter and Spellskite over Chalice of the Void and Crucible of Worlds, and I'm not sure I made the right call. I'm also intrigued by mass-bounce effects like Ætherize, Cyclonic Rift, and Displacement Wave to fend off go-wide aggro. I'm also questioning whether I even need Relic of Progenitus, or whether I should pack something like Grafdigger's Cage (or even no 'yard hate at all, but that doesn't seem right). All in all, I could use some pointers with regards to what options have been tested and found lacking. Any help appreciated.
5-0 league!!! good job pierakor!! keep crushing man... I'm kind of new to this mono U tron concept.. can you explain to me what jesters cap is good against? I know i used to play it about 10 years ago when heartbeat of the springs combo was around.. It won games on command.. But I just can't grasp its strength in modern. Scapeshift? still costs 4. Maybe you can explain this card choice. Thank you.
@kharniverous, Hi there it's nice to see new people pick up the deck! So about Jester's Cap... I actually just play it for the troll face artwork. I play it but never activate until I won the game, then I activate targetting myself to tilt my opponent.
Also I am currently 59-29 with the same deck list I posted a few days ago

12hour stream happening tomorrow (11hours from now) also bunch of stuff on youtube so you wanna see me u tron, you got so many ways...
i was *****-talking on mtgo today cause someone was playing grishoalbrand, and i called it weird (in a bad way)... and they made fun of me for playing a tier 3 deck.. ba bam! dayum, he got me...
stupid cards i've lost to online recently include:
summoning trap (some prime time BS deck)
dragonlord dromka (bring to light scapeshift)
It looks like a fairly solid list but I would take out steel hellkite it dies far too easily. and replace it with a second mindslaver. i always run 2. i would also take out 1 Ugin and replace it with a snapcaster mage.

I would probably drop a singular fabricate for an island as well. Also i would definitely run crucible and chalice of the void over silent arbiter and spellskite. Also depending on your metta i would probably drop both relics and a singular pithing needle for 3 dismembers. but that just comes down to personal preference.
I was mostly using jester's cap against GR tron and Newlamog. I play against GR tron reasonably often.
Yeah jesters cap is soo powerful vs r/g Tron you can exile 3 tron lands or their 3 newlamogs. or 3 of their karns. and you can recur it with academy ruins. i also play a singular jesters cap in side. This card is beast. Im new to the forum but not to the deck. I play this deck on paper and it is by far my favourite modern deck. Shoktroopa/kharniverous Thankyou soo much for creating this deck man. it has supplied me with thousands of amazing games of magic. i watch you on twitch sometimes and you absolutely crush man
So quick question...spell pierce vs negate in sb . pierce seems,so good in opening hand and up to turn 5...why do some choose negate over it? Because pierce has potential to fail? Let me know which you prefer. Thanks
Deck also tends to have lots of colourless mana floating around, but is limited on the amount of U mana it has. Playing Spell Pierce isn't all that more efficient, because it'll result in unused colourless quite often. Furthermore, U-Tron is a slow deck, Spell Pierce essentially translates into card disadvantage in certain matches, whereas Negate is always live. Spell Pierce also has negative synergy with a powerful inclusion to the deck, Chalice of the Void.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Based on those and pierakor's list, I've come up with the following:
That was so incredibly entertaining. Seeing him hate on the deck, then get crushed by it and praise it as it did it's thing, and having him talk about how there's a chance he can win when he's already been mind slaver locked, was amusing, particularly because Pierakor <3 <3 was mostly discussing strategy and lines of play and being cool, as Jeff was ranting about irrelevant crap with his whiny socialable voice, yuck.
Another funny info: I am roughly 90tix in the plus after 90 matches so I make about 1tix/match or 5tix/league
Next stop: 75% winrate
Congratulations on your success, pierakor! I would like to ask a couple of questions about some cards have performed for you. I'm mainly interested in Epiphany in the Drownyard, which looks like a great way to surge ahead once we have stabilized the board, but my (still limited) experience with the deck is that I've won virtually every game that has gone long - it's the first 4 turns I'm worried about. Is it a tad win-more? My second question centers around Solemn Simulacrum vs. Thought-Knot Seer. I love the fetchability of Simulacrum and the fact that it's massive card advantage for us, but that 4/4 body and having some mainboard hand disruption is awfully tempting. I see that you stand on the TKS side of the ledger - is this a personal preference thing? Or is Thought-Knot Seer demonstrably better in your experience? Thanks for any help.
It's interesting, seeing that he might be getting on the Ugin Train.

Something I have been working on because if I can do the slaver lock then I can end the game quicker.
I never liked slaver as a finisher anyway, in paper magic time is of the essence and slaver as quick as ever I would always to to turns.
Lodestone is the first I'd get rid of, I'd mostly go for another "sweeper" but not sure what.
My current sideboard, is perfect for my meta, may e I could drop a dismember for another cantrip counter.
I hate remand but no other counter +draw for 2 worth it.
