Didn't really want to post it, but I've been having a rough time with the deck recently. Two tournaments that ended 2-2 for me.
WNM - Round 1 vs. Grixis Delver. Very awkward draws. Chances to win, but can't find lands until a counter, Lightning Bolt, and final Delver hit kills me. I go off in the next game on turn 3. I had Pact of Negation backup, but he didn't have any responses. Turn 1 Delver didn't flip in the first 2 turns here. Turn 1 Delver gets me before I can kill him. I go off, but can only draw 7 cards. I barely don't find what I need to win. 1-2.
Round 2 vs. Zoo. In game 1 I decide to not play around Path to Exile Twice. The first one stops me going off and the 2nd one kills my Wurm. In the next game, he just flooded the board. I did Anger of the Gods and he did CoCo for double Wild Nacatl and 5th land, cast Wild Nacatl. It's exactly lethal and I don't have anything else. 0-2.
Round 3 vs. 8 Whack. He knocks me low, but I turn 3 Breach a Wurm and win from there. In the next game, I do the same thing, but with Nourishing Shoal and he literally has NO chance then. 2-0.
Round 4 vs. Burn. He does Skullcrack in response to Goryo's Vengeance, but I do Nourishing Shoal in response. I end up getting there. Eidolon makes it tough and he plays a combination of Skullcracks and Lightning Helices. In the final game, I land Chalice of the Void on 2. It slows him down and I get there by Breaching a Wurm late. He must have had a LOT of 2 mana spells... 2-1.
FNM - Round 1 vs. Werewolves. He wins a game with Moonmist for my tokens after my Breached Wurm slapped him to 4. My Breached Wurms win the other 2 games. 2-1.
Round 2 vs. 4 Color Shadow. My draw steps are lands and a single Worldspine Wurm. He does some discard spells, then Goyf, then double Death's Shadow. In the next game, I plan on end step Goryo's Vengeance to draw out Stubborn Denial, then resolve Through the Breach Wurm for lethal on my turn. He doesn't counter either and I win easily. It seems like I will win easily in the next game since he floods with 5 land and only a 5/6 Tarmogoyf. But I go off, draw 21 cards, and miss out on 2 Chalice of the Void to stop Stubborn Denial, 2 Blood Moon to stop Stubborn Denial, 5 Green creatures (1 Borborygmos Enraged is gone) to use with my Nourishing Shoal in hand, or the last SSG or Desperate Ritual. He has added a topdecked Death's Shadow and the life totals are 3 to 2. I have 19 cards left in my deck. I can't find those cards, so I lose because the best I can do is Engineered Explosives to kill 1 of his 2 lethal threats. 1-2.
Round 3 vs. Grishoalbrand. He didn't turn 2 me either game this time. I just drew super dead, so he had all the time in the world. In game 1, I had a timely Collective Brutality to take Through the Breach and he drew dead while I finally did Griselbrand. He just literally had all the time in the world in games 2 and 3. Maybe I should have mulliganed, assuming I would find nothing in the games? Not sure. I already mulled to 6, missing Griselbrand to go off on turn 2. Never found it in this game. 1-2.
Round 4 vs. BW Tokens. Kills me on turn 5 in this one with Sorin, Lord of Innistrad. The next game, I kept drawing Nourishing Shoal and Worldspine Wurms. I ended up with 3 Nourishing Shoal in the graveyard and doing 2 shuffle triggers from Wurms, but I finally find land to Nourishing Shoal Wurm, Splice Through the Breach, Wurm. In the final game, I go off, but don't find the win. I finally get to a stage to win with the Wurm tokens, as Borborygmos Enraged was the literal last card on my deck and using 2 Worldspine Wurm to have extra turns and finally win. 2-1.
Two days of 4-4 total. Rough beats. I think maybe I'm just not good enough. A lot of fizzles and a lot of drawing only lands during a game.
Legacy - Sneak Show, BR Reanimator, Miracles, UW Stoneblade
Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)
Draft - (I wish I had more time for limited...)
Commander - Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build) (dead format for me)
It just really sucks because I've done terribly recently and punting 2 matches doesn't relieve that. If I felt I played 100% like I know I'm capable of, I would feel a bit better.
Meanwhile I've seen the other grishoalbrand player win nearly 90% of his matches since restarting, including 3-0 vs me. The most sad part is that I've tried to predict what I'll draw (imagining the worst) and my predictions have been terrifyingly close. I've also tried to predict my opponents draws (imagining the worst for me) and it's been super close. Against bw tokens, in which I drew what I needed to win, the only card I did not predict, short of exactly which land would be played, was secure the wastes.
I know I'm doing many things wrong. The most important starts with mulligans. I often assume that looting and flashback will get me 1 missing piece or a single land. Or I assume I'll draw some good cards with multiple draw 2s or draw 3s, discard 2.

I feel u man the deck is super swingy from what i have seen but the small plays all add up. I feel like if I never mis play I can win like 70%
we've all been there FCG. Modern itself is a high variance format and the deck's nature just complicates that. It'll even out in the long run, and you can use this to our advantage if you want to spike a big tournament. Power level is there, and hopefully the prevalence of fair decks in the PT will shift sideboard resources towards sweepers and removal (and our good friend big mana, of course).
That being said, I will be at Toronto next week to try and take one down for the Church of Griselbrand. Anyone else from this thread going to be there? Would be up for meeting up if you are.
In preparation, I've been working of somewhat of a sideboard guide for myself. I'll hope to share with the thread this week..
Lastly, work's been a ***** but I'm hoping to start doing some video recordings for the deck. Thinking about doing a bit of a primer, then a game-by-game commentary on the modern challenge I took down as well as the various modern challenges I've done well in, and go from there in the next few months.

I am looking at taking grishoalbrand or Gerry T Mardu list to SCG Indy. Interested to see how you do and how the graveyard hate in the field is

I think there's something good with the mardu pyromancer deck. I was interested in it myself. I love the Liliana addition and would consider adding a Hazoret as a top end - my 2 cents.
brainstorming for the expected metagame for toronto.. does anyone have any experience with defense grid and torpor orb, paying respect to Uwx/deaths shadow/blue moon/burn and mostly humans, respectively.
ive never tried grid mostly because of theorycrafting, as alot of our wins vs control are on their turn, but rethinking this it does seem good vs blue decks and infinitely better than boseiju with everyone and their dogs playing field of ruin

I've tried Defense Grid in the past and it was super underwhelming. But then, at the time, Boseiju was a LOT better and I played 3 Pact of Negation in the SB too. I guess if you expect a lot of Control, it seems solid. But I personally feel that there are tougher matchups than Control for us.
I wanted to ask you guys how you side vs. Death's Shadow.
Vs. Grixis Shadow, I side in 3 Chalice of the Void and 2 Blood Moon.
Vs. Jund Shadow, I side in 3 Chalice of the Void, 2 Blood Moon, and 2 Engineered Explosives
What I side out really depends. I'm starting to think at least 1 Nourishing Shoal and possibly 1 Worldspine Wurm could be sided out. I usually side out all 3 Cathartic Reunion, as it's risky vs. discard and Stubborn Denial in my opinion. How do you side?

yea. and in a wide field like this I don't think I need many more control dedicated card past 2 pacts. In GPs it's important to load up with haymaker ish cards that have wide applications. I can bring in chalices for x=1 vs grixis (the latest burkhart list has IoKs, along with snares, SV/Opts, surgicals, dispels, bolts etc.), jeskai (path/bolt/sv/dispel/snare/relic), and blood moon can come in vs. either of the 3 color decks, and even vs UW if they have azcanta. i'm happy with swapping hugs for brutalities, bring in 2 pacts and some chalics.
vs traverse shadows, I previously did not bother with chalice (because of kcommands which are no longer MD'd in traverse lists, and decays, and that goyfs and TBR ignore chalice), but now with stubborn denial chalice for 1 catches too much. My board plan is something like:
Here's my rough sideboard plan sketch as promised. Unfortunately work has been extraordinarily hectic so while I tried to provide commentary for every matchup I wasn't able to. It may look a bit messy. Ask away if you have any questions.
Otherwise, if anyone's going to be Griselbranding away at Toronto, holler at me!
