I will be replacing Noxious Revival with Finale of Promise. In return for not being able to get a bear off of a gifts pile I get something quite bit more interesting. Gifts piles with Finale in the equations become quite a bit exciting.
How have you been doing with final promise main deck?
I havent gotten round to this. Been doing other experiments with WAR cards in my other decks eg. the new bolas in my grixis control and saheeli in my creativity deck.
Uh, did you try it yet? I'm kinda keen to know if it does as good as it sounds in theory.

Aria of Flame is super interesting. As far as the math goes, after you cast this you need to string 7-8 spells to "overcome" the 10 life granted. If we ritual into this on turn 2, it's very likely we'll kill our opponent turn 3, and their spot removal won't mean a thing, we don't have to care about surgical extractions, and we won't be needing a graveyard to hit that number. Would I be exaggerating if I said this might be even better than grapeshot in our deck?

I think it might be a really nice transformational card for G2 and 3, and off the top of my head, Knight of Autumn, Assassins Trophy and Cryptics could be an issue G1, and it won't take opponents long to wise up.
Still, a nice card and one that absolutely begs testing.

Wanted to know if it did any work for you. I thought it wasn't worth it for us, but you sounded motivated about it
I think fiery islet has to come in the deck, I will start on 2.
About fact or fiction... I'm unsure. I will try it as a 4x instead of pieces. Grabbing bears or thing in the ice post board sounds great. But also offers a worst selection, so for the combo turn pieces is still better I'd say.
Flusterstorm is such a sweet card for us, I think overall we benefit from it being in the format. I was running gigadrowse against blue decks, but now that they might have free countermagic I don't think is worth it, so I'll run counterspells. Spell Pierce can hit rest in peace , planeswalkers or spheres, so is not strictly better.
is modern horizons killing this deck? i love combo but i'm not willing to play against force of will in modern too. will a black splash for discard become viable?
Force of negation is not really a game changer for us I think. We have always faced hate. We will adapt. Also I noticed, so far there has been one storm card previewed. There could be others. I would kill for black storm cards. Playing duress mid storm is so OP. We will need to see what the meta does after modern settles down. Probably in 2-3 months. Maybe longer.
Is a game changer because we forced them to be untapped. They can just now tap for a beater and counter gifts ungiven-past in flames and let us there to start the beatdown the next turn. We have always faced hate but it seems to grow each set, and maybe rest in peace/sphere weren't so hard but those backed by free counter spells that we can't use ourselves to protect the combo and flusterstorm makes it even worst. It's not facing hate, is each set bringing more set to a deck that isn't even too much broken.

I disagree, I actually think horizons might slow down the format a bit with new interaction and more walkers. That pushes big Mana decks we are happy to face. About the new force, I also don't think is the nail in the coffin. Nor is flusterstorm (if storm is played in small numbers, I don't see it being so popular). We also run countermagic main deck, plus some number in the side... I think we still have the tools. In general, I think storm is pretty resilient since it faces hate from a very open frame. We bounce permanent hate, we counter stack based interaction... We play around some other hate. I'm only afraid of super efficient disruption plus pressure
flusterstorm might not be the nail in the coffin, but weather the storm is. they haven't even been subtle when naming the card -.-

Are we afraid of weather the storm? I get is game if we are tight on spells, but when we are unchecked..we grapeshot for 20, that gain 63 let's say...we go on comboing off and eventually kill them right? Something like grapeshot remand the second one with storm 30. I think is only a problem combined with other forms of hate

Put it this way - they gain 3 times of whatever storm count you managed to work up to. And if that first attempt didn't consume too much resource, then you've got a hope, sure. They're probably at 30+ life. But if your handsize is now 2-3 cards, mostly lands, your GY is spent, then I think you might have an issue overcoming their new life total.
It's **** like this that makes me look even more closely at Aria of Flame, which doesn't demand you do everything the same turn, and hits harder and harder with each spell.

This may have already come up in this thread, but what would people think about sideboarding in an Unburial Rites package (for Gifts Ungiven) as an alternate win condition? I feel like it might take opponents by surprise, and could be a bit of a toolbox as well.

Might want to play a few Faithless Looting MD in this build, just for synergy.
Here's 3 reasons that's out.
1. If you draw your wincon (iona etc) or unburial, you are literally stuck with a dead card until you find a looting, of which you have 4 copies, not really enough.
2. This is a horrible sideboard plan because the first thing every opponent does against storm is board in GY hate.
3. The second most sideboarded plan against Storm: leyline of sanctity effects. Which turns off Gifts ungiven.

So with Aria of Flame I take it that Thing in the Ice isn't needed anymore? Sideboard slots are limited, and I never liked the nonbo with Empty the Warrens anyways. Here's the list I'll probably be running in GP Barcelona:
Currently running just a single Fiery Islet, as the lifeloss vs the option of just adding colorless mana with Shivan Reef has mattered more than the card draw in my testing, but I kinda want you guys to convince me on running two.
FoF has been stellar over Pieces of the Puzzle and Aria of Flame is insane, specially in the face of graveyard hate. I usually swap both PiF, one Grapeshot and whatever other thing depending on the matchup for the three of them plus one Empty the Warrens and laugh at their dead cards. At that point the only thing I have to worry about (besides removal on a mana bear) is Damping Sphere / Rule of Law, which I can bounce at their EOT before going off. I would like to try 2-of Flusterstorm in the side though, and I feel pretty naked without any Ravenous Trap / Leyline of the Void in this Hogaak meta, although you can always try and outrace it.
Another question, how are you guys handling the UW Control matchup? It went from a walk in the park to an absolute nightmare thanks to Teferi, Time Raveler blocking your Gifts / FoF for value at their EoT plan, makes your bounce spells sorcery speed, and doesn't let you respond to removal on a bear when casting rituals, which has mattered a lot more times than you can imagine in my testing. Narset, Parter of Veils also invalidates half the deck while searching for answers and sideboard cards, there's no playing around Dovin's Veto on a Gifts / PiF and they have it open as soon as turn two, and they can even tap out to deploy a turn 3 walker while holding up Force of Negation for Gifts / PiF, which is usually game over. Maybe we should just run 1-2 Force of Negation ourselves in place of some Remand? I'm just kinda waiting to see how the deck evolves in the following weeks, since Aria of Flame has a ton of potential to be even a mainboard card.
Hey all, I'm new to the deck and a bit confused about something. I see that most players (including most of the very prominent Storm pros) playing Aria of Flame in the sideboard. If I'm honest, I'm really just not sure what it's for. It doesn't get around Leyline, it doesn't kill without our normal engine being online (that is, our ability to string spells together) and generally seems like a wasted slot for a win-more card with some cool overkill damage if you want to flex. Can anyone shed light on why and/or when to side it in?
It actually does get around Leyline, the counters you're putting on Aria go on the stack before the spell resolves, so you don't actually care about the spell being exiled by Leyline after resolving more than you are getting a counter on Aria of Flame. You want to sideboard it in against decks that can easily disrupt your standard combo and decks that struggle to remove enchantments.
Think about this: every spell you cast is essentially +1 damage with Aria of Flame on your opponent without the spell even resolving. So, assuming your opponent is at 30 life (20 starting plus Aria ETB trigger), you only need to cast eight spells rather than casting, resolving, and then storming off 20 spells.
Aria is the exact opposite of a win-more card for Storm, it's closer to an alternate win-con.
