Round 2 loss to Mono U Living End. Went to time in g2 and I lost g1. I've played this twice in tournament now and some test games with a friend, the matchup just feels horrible. I'd probably be better off with 4c here
Round 3 2-0 win over Ad Nauseam. Everything just went perfect for me. G1 Inquisition, Brutality, Liliana, gifts Iona naming black, Dsphere Phyrexian unlife for exact lethal. G2 he has a leyline but I have turn 3 Geist with snapcaster and negate backup
Round 4 2-1 win over Burn
G1 I mull to 5 and he has the gas
G2 I shred his hand with discard and Liliana. I Gifts EoT for Iona and Rites, +1 Lili to discard the path he was holding up and name red for Iona, GG.
G3 he plays a land tapped after mulling to 6 and passes turn. My inquisition sees 2x Atarkas Command, Path, RiP, and Boros Charm. I'm not too worried about the RiP or the Burn spells so I take the path to protect my Gideon. the game went relatively long but it was never even close. He had to use up a lot of resources to kill Gideon and couldn't recover from that + Shambling Vent. I think I ended the game at 17 life. Looking back though, I probably should've taken the RiP so I could've made more value plays even if I didn't go for Iona
@Scarmask I like your list. It is quite close to mine actually. You have Tarmogoyfs instead of baby Jace and the Life from the loam + raven's crime combo in the main deck. Regarding Grim Flayer, Jace, Vryn's Prodigy and Collective Brutality also help getting the delirium if it cannot attack as a 2/2. I agree that I do not run much green, but I just enjoy playing Grim flayer, and Abrupt Decay and Maelstrom Pulse are very useful cards in our deck to get rid of annoying enchantments, artifacts or planeswalkers. Plus it allows us to play Life from the Loam and Raven's Crime!
I wouldn't really know with what to replace those cards in the Esper shell. Perhaps some counterspells, Serum vision, Detention Sphere, Cryptic Command?
Against Eldrazi Tron, Ghost Quarter and life from the loam are great. For game 2 and 3 I would enter surgical extraction if you can hit one of their main cards with your discard. Also enter Terastodon. Fatal push on the other hand can be removed from main deck. Would you consider Ceremonious Rejection in your sideboard?
@Dejadal well done! Always happy to see when gifts deck make good results. Interesting you are playing 4 inquisition and no thoughtseize. How does it work out?
Thanks!
There have been a few times where I Inquisition someone and really wish it was a thoughtseize so I could take their Cryptic/Company/Planeswalker. Collective Brutality has helped fill the gap a little bit. I just don't really have room for another discard spell unless I shave Serum Visions. I suppose I'm not 100% opposed to that, but I am a bit skeptical

- I personally would consider no to Ceremonious Rejection and here is why:
1) Ceremonious Rejection is used against Lantern Control, Affinity, Eldrazi Tron and regular Tron. Both the Tron deck and the Eldrazi Tron decks board in 3-4 Relics of progenitus against you post board (some even maindeck those). Stony silence is just alot better in those matchups to shutdown this relics and their main gameplan. (If I saw my opponent's deck list and they were on Titanshift or Jeskai control and had 2-3 relics in their board, I would actually board in my stony silence to protect my combo)
2) You want somewhere between 2-3 cards to destroy enchantments (leyine of sanctity, void, rest in peace and blood moon etc) to force through your combo.
I'm an advocate of Dragonlord Silumgar as a re-animator target. I have stolen alot of hard to deal with planeswalkers, especially Karn, Liliana etc. (I will also add alot of people on this forum disagree with my approach to this)
Similarly, If you dislike the Eldrazi Tron matchup, I personally would play 2 Elspeth or Grave Titanin your board if you're not already (she's fantastic against Junk, UWR etc. I pretty much board her in for any fair matchup post board when my opponent boards in a ton of grave hate.)
Thanks!

- I'm a huge advocate of cutting serum visions from the gifts deck. Grim Flayer and Jace VP gives you alot of loot into your deck. I don't think its wrong to play thoughtseize over serum visions. But I personally play 4 Inqusitions and 3 Brutality (I also have 3 Vendilion cliques and 2 Liliana in the main)
I'm actively maintaining a comprehensive article to help explain to new cube players how some complex vintage level cards work in a cube environment. Vintage Cube Cards Explained
Well Flayer isn't really an option for me since I'm on Esper. I'm set up more like a control deck than a Midrange deck, with a mainboard sweeper gifts package. Hitting land drops is a lot more important in my deck because it's borderline impossible for me to win on less than 4 lands.
I don't think Silumgar is anywhere near good enough as your sole answer to PWs. If you tap out to cast or reanimate him, uptick the PW you stole, and then they Path Silumgar EoT, you just paid 4-6 mana and 1-3 cards to uptick a PW once and then hand it back to your opponent accelerated. I'd rather play a Gifts-able catch all removal package (Dsphere, Pulse, Decay, E.E, Unmaking, etc)
That's an interesting list Nico61. How do you find Forbidden Alchemy?
@Breathe1234, when you talk about Elspeth, you're talking about Elspeth, Sun's Champion am I right? Perhaps I should find a spot for her in my sideboard.
What do you guys think about the new card Journey to Eternity? The reanimation effect is just great in our deck, since it is our main objective. But I wonder if it would be difficult to flip. We do not have many creatures to target with an aura, and we are not playing a sacrifice engine (well except if we target ourselves with Liliana...).
I am planning to attend a Grand Prix in Modern in less than a month. I think that i'll bring this deck with me. So I am still working on it, and am open to suggestion. For instance, would you play Tasigur, the Golden Fang over Sun Titan or not?
Journey to Eternity seems interesting, but I'd be worries about getting 2-for-1'ed. The effect is powerful, but what's the optimal creature to cast it on? I would think either Sakura-Tribe Elder or Fulminator mage.
Thanks for your reply FuneralofGod. I'll try to keep Sun Titan in then, he works particularly well with Ghost Quarter.
You're right, I wouldn't know on what creature to cast Journey to Eternity. It wouldn't be great on baby Jace, nor on Lingering Souls token. This leaves Snapcaster and Grim Flayer, with which I have to chumpblock... A bit complicated to flip it I admit.
I would like to try one copy of Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. I know some people here have tried him(her) out. Any good feedback about it?
Hey guys, been hwre a long time ans check in from time to time.
Ive been off 4c gifts for a bit playing esper goryo gifts and cruel control...and faeries.
Anyways decided to roll with 4c gifts this next week of events.
Hi there, I always liked the idea of a Gifts deck, and even though it may not be tier one I think it's a good start for getting back to Magic (been away from the game for over 5 years).
I can put together either of these two list with a minor investment:
On the first version I would like to include Liliana and Wrath of God, however I wouldn't really know what to cut. Also, the Loam + Crime package is on the sideboard (which is a work in progress).
Would any of these two approach be somewhat viable? I'm planning on take this to a rather competitive FNM with a really diverse meta (pretty much at least one of everything). My goal is to have fun while having a chance at the same time.
Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have. - René Descartes
Your second list looks more powerful. Though I don't know if you'll need *** in your main deck. Maybe replace it with a single Collective Brutality? I've found it to be one of the most useful cards in modern right now.
The gifts package finding: LOTV, Eternal Witness, Sun Titan, Unburial rites - is an insane value package that lots of decks have a hard time dealing with.

@FuneralofGod, Have you tried your deck with the Journey to Eternity? I think it is a good idea to use it on creatures that can sacrifice themselves. The only thing that bothers me are the many land disruption cards (Ghost quarter, Field of Ruin, Fulminator Mage, Tectonic Edge, Spreading Seas or Blood Moon) played in the format. I am afraid it might take a lot of effort to flip it, and in the end, not get many benefit from it. What's your thought on this? Is it still worth trying?
@Muphynz, I like your decklist. Why do you prefer to put your Path to Exile in your sideboard rather than in your maindeck? I like them as they hit any creatures without restriction. Also aren't you playing one basic Plains just in case? I believe one Ghost quarter is sufficient. You don't need one in your maindeck and one in your sideboard. If you gift for Life from the Loam you can re-use it indefinitely.
@Xour, I also prefer your midrange approach of the deck. As I read on this forum, being active is better than being reactive.
Quick question, what do you guys think about Yahenni's Expertise as a sideboard card? Is it better or worse than Flaying Tendrils? Or could both be sideboarded?
Thanks! I do have some follow up questions for you guys if you don't mind.
- Why have the lists moved away from mana dorks like Birds of Paradise? Granted that run sweepers with too many creatures is a no-go, but other than that, what has changed?
- What about cards like Scavenging Ooze, Siege Rhino, Tasigur? Should any those be included in a more mid-range approach?
- On a somewhat related note, what about the Sun Titan package? Still worth it?
So sorry to flood you with questions, but there are so many different decks than when I left the game that I'm not sure how to make a good call on these points.
Thanks a lot!

Sorry for the double post. I've been reading the last ~30 pages of the thread and I think I understand why the mana dorks are out of flavor. It seems that Fatal Push + Bolt was too much for them in addition with, at the time, a less aggro meta.
I went through my pile of cards and was able to sleeve up this:
Anyways, since I still missing some cards, a few notes and questions about the decklist:
- 1 Abrupt Decay and 1 Dismember should be Fatal Push
- 1 Liliana of the Veil should be Liliana, the Last Hope
- At least 1 Razorverge Thicket should be Blooming Marsh and the other one probably a ninth fetchland
- I still have one spot open which should ideally be . Still I'm unsure on what to do here: Tasigur? Maindeck Terastodon or Damnation?
- I'm still not sure about the mandlands, are Creeping Tar Pit still the best option?
- Apparently the Junk/Midrange lists favors Tarmogoyf a lot. Unfortunately I don't have them, and I don't think Knight of the Reliquary are a good replacement.
- How do we deal with aggro decks like Humans? Sweepers from the sideboard?
- Finally if the mana dorks are still viable I could remove the Loam package and maybe a single Path in favor of 4 Birds
So sorry for SO many questions! Thanks a lot for reading!

Yes, Fatal Push, Lightning Bolt are the main reasons to drop Birds of Paradise[/card]. However I sometimes wish i had dorks. Having a turn 2 Liliana into a turn 3 Gifts would be great! But I saw some people preferred Sylvan Caryatid instead of birds. I think I would chose them over Birds too if I wanted some dorks. Sure they won't allow turn 2 Liliana, but they have hexproof and can block creatures with strength of 2 or less. Plus, we have many cards at 1cmc. Getting Caryatids avoid you the dilemma: "should I cast Inquisition or bird".
If you don't play Tarmogoyfs, perhaps you would like to try Grim Flayer? I've found it very useful in my deck. Put on early pressure, allows draw selection and often becomes a 4/4. Scavenging Ooze, Thragtusk and Siege Rhino work well in the deck. I mean they help us with our many life loss due to fetchs, ravlands and thoughseize. I would probably play a Tasigur instead of one Kitchen Finks. I play Sun Titan instead of Tasigur. Sure he is harder to cast, and double white mana isn't always easy to get in a 4 colours deck, but once it hits the field, you get so many good cards back. The best is when you have Liliana of the veil on the battlefield, discard some permanent, let's say Eternal Witness, then attack with Sun Titan, you get a free Eternal Witness on the field and a card from your graveyeard. But of course it also depends what targets you have in your deck if you consider Sun Titan.
I think daddy Jace slides in nicely as he can throw back fatties we can shuffle away or grind off with Flayed. All of this in addition to his other useful abilities.
Red should be burn, Goblins, Dragons, draw/discard, and Standard-unplayable 5CMC cards with insane, lengthy effects that take 10 minutes to figure out what they do and another 20 to actually make their effects work on the field.
Hi, I'm going to the first FNM in about 5 years and I'm bringing these 75. Unfortunately I couldn't get in time some key cards (Fatal Push, Collective Brutality, and some others) so I will have to do without.
Those are 59 maindeck cards, I'm unsure about the manabase (have extra shocks and fetchs to add) and the creatures. I would like to have a second Siege Rhino but the cards I ordered haven't arrived yet. Should I add another Thragtusk? Maybe a Phantasmal Image? I have Knight of the Reliquary, but I don't think they will fit the deck that well.
I do have Sun Titan but I don't have Eternal Witness yet. No Tarmogoyf or Jungle Flayer as well.
Should I move the Loam + Crime package to the sideboard and add more creatures?
Any suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated!

I do have Sun Titan but I don't have Eternal Witness yet. No Tarmogoyf or Jungle Flayer as well.
Should I move the Loam + Crime package to the sideboard and add more creatures?
Any suggestions you may have will be greatly appreciated!
Edit: Alternatively I can go with something like this, replacing the Flayers for Oozes and the Hierarchs for Birds.
