An excellent point by LordGrimpow. Could turn into a massive blowout against us potentially. Probably not worth the risk. If you do test, make sure to include a copy of Buried Ruin as it would be a way to recover the "lost" cards potentially through re-cast. Or as you suggest pull it game 2/3. I suppose it could be used as a 1 of in your 15 and could be sided in game 2/3 versus a discard heavy meta as well. Again though here, Nephalia Academy is probably the more efficient use of an "anti-discard" card slot. If you do test, let us know the results.
I wasn't even thinking about it as anti-discard. I was looking for a card draw engine. They all have some drawbacks. Cloister is interesting in that it has a nice beneficial side effect (stops discard) and also a potential significant drawback (you could lose your hand).
I'll definitely put in some reps with Cloister, but it won't be in high stakes competition.
About casting a 2nd Cloister giving your hand back ... do they share the same exile space? Does "Exiled with Bottled Cloister" mean that one or any one?
I've wondered this same thing about Karn. If one Karn exiles a bunch of cards and dies, then another Karn uses his ultimate, do the original Karn's exiled cards also get put into play?
Another good point on the re-cast of Cloister, I'm not sure about that situation or the Karn one. Not sure if there is "exile memory" or not.
Staff of Nin seems like another feel bad, you cast it have to wait until your next upkeep and in the meantime opponent takes it out somehow. Waste of 6 mana and a turn. Tome on the other hand could be used the turn it comes out, but would be limited to basically having Tron +1 mana on board to use and again your whole turn is dedicated for that one card.
The symmetrical card draw stuff like Howling Mine also feels bad too. Temple Bell could be the best of those but again the symmetry could make things worse. I think they could be tested. I'm always open to new avenues and strategies. I'd like to know your results.

Don't know if you'd want to test it or not but Tamiyo's Journal could be card draw and sacking 3 for a tutor (last Tron piece, Karn, etc.) could be decent late game. Early game it would feel bad though. Just a thought, do what you like.

Right, the problem with all these cards is you need to get at least two cards from it to gain any advantage. The card being played has no initial effect, so it's a loss of card and loss of that mana. Then after your first card, you are at least even on cards. After that it's gold, but getting there ain't easy... a three turn wait to get ahead. Having to pay more mana for each card feels really bad, but the Tamiyo book looks better than Tome. Sea Gate Wreckage is 3 mana, but at least the land drop is "free".
It really only makes sense in longer, grindy matches, like control. I think it would be really good in the control matchup because by mid game you are relying on top decks and need to somehow stay ahead of their answers. Maybe Cloister would be decent as a sideboard card in UWx control matches?
I'm building a Gx Tron deck for fun, will try Staff of Nin in it. Once it's in play, you get free damage pings and free card draw. Doesn't seem terrible.
Hey folks,
I'm just starting to get comfortable with the deck after about a month of regular play with a stock list.
My local Meta is very creature aggro/combo heavy, on any given night I will usually see:
I don't see myself playing much outside my shop in the near future though I do like small events around the state and want to prepare for the upcoming Modern Season.
Now to the question. Recognizing that I know so many of my game 1 matchups will be creature based, is it reasonable to include more mainboard low pain removal (WWail/SpCo) over say Dismembers and maybe lose a reshaper or two?
I potentially see this as freeing up a turn to crack map, pop a relic or Mstone if needed, and hold up removal. I'm certain this is an often debated point but as a relatively new player (about a year) tuning for meta feels like my next opportunity for growth. Thanks.
reshaper is great vs aggro,i usually trades and leaves a card behind,i wont take it out against aggro, depending of the creatures ,a main ratchet can be usefull, you can also use batterskull/wurmcoil main, they're great vs aggro
match 1: Eldrazi and taxes 0-2
Harsh matchup, too much disruption, the displacer/ flickerwisp lock on the lands is awfull,I never beat this guy.
Match 2: Bant eldrazi 2-0
Pretty easy match, assemble tron both games, karn and ulamog from the side did the job.
Match 3: Monogreen Stompy 2-0
Easy but can get out of hands, game 2 wurmcoil saved me when i was on 1 life, all is dust and ratchet bomb mvp.
Match 4: Merfolks 2-1
Game 1 tron turn 3 karn and was over, game 2 and 3 tron and temple but draw no more than lands,a hard match that i havent tested enought
Match 5: Esper control 2-0
Pretty easy, chalice cut a good portion of his deck, cavern did a great job and ulamog sealed the game.
overall,im happy with the deck, still some matchs to test more but out of the taxes matchup, all sseems winneable
I personally would not board out Matter Reshaper. The cantrip effect is too good. Free land drops are sick. And playing a Relic or Map through a Chalice-on-one is pretty satisfying. Or just putting a TKS or Smasher into your hand for free. Yes, please. But if you are seeing a lot of Path to Exile and Condemn in certain matchups, which circumvent the "dies" trigger, then by all means remove some Reshapers.
I've been testing a lot against a fast aggro deck this week, and I'm finding myself boarding out Karn and Mind Stone vs aggro now. We have more stuff we want to bring in than we want to remove, so something has to give. I'm back to having 2 All is Dust and 2 Ratchet Bomb in the main, and I bring in 2 Spatial Contortion, a 3rd Dismember, Wurmcoil Engine, and Hangarback Walker.
If anyone is interested in splashing a color, the new uncommon Deserts should work.
Hashep Oasis could allow a World Breaker to slip into some lists I suppose. I don't see it supplanting Karn but the thought of being able to cast Ancient Stirrings is tempting. The 1 life loss is a bummer to activate for G though. It opens things up a little. Also opens up a new world of side boarding in any color as well. Guess we will see if anyone brews with it.

Interesting thought. Ancient Stirrings is where I'd be going with it to try to make the deck a little more consistent. World Breaker is a good card though. But what to remove? We'd have to drop the land destruction package for the Deserts, then we'd have to drop something to fit in Ancient Stirrings ... I guess Mind Stone would be the obvious cut?
do we even need worldbreaker or Stirrings?
removing the chalices feels like more of a tron deck splashing eldrazi than the other way round.
Nah, it's very close to the Colorless ET list, and very different from the Gx Tron list with 4x Sylvan Scrying, 8x Chromatic, 4x Karn, 2x Ugin, Titans, World Breaker, etc.
In a meta where Chalice is needed game 1 more often than not, this deck will be worse. But if it's the other way around, this deck could maybe be better? *shrug* Whatevs, just throwing stuff out there.
Edit: It could be run with Stirrings in the side and Chalice in the main. I've been fishbowling some games with it, and being able to dig 5 deep into the library for a Karn, Endbringer, TKS, Smasher, Ballista feels pretty good.

sorry bro, wasn't trying to poopoo your idea.
I think the deck is well positioned and OP as is, I'm just looking for ways to improve our bad matchups at the minute, transitioning to a build like the above might be a great step to take if the deck gets stalled and struggles in the meta but at the minute we are doing pretty well.
All good, no worries. I agree, the deck is fine. Some of us just like to brew/tinker even if it doesn't go anywhere competitively. I'm also very interested in trying to improve our bad matchups which is why I've made some tweaks like moving Ratchet Bomb to main.
Also, having only 4x green sources is probably not enough, I'd probably trim down on some utility lands (Cavern, Wreckage) or Wastes and and a couple more painlands (maybe Spire of Industry).
Since you splash green you can now add some SB cards like Nature's Claim now.
Thanks! I'm starting to wonder if I'm just trying to force a deck with bad match ups in my shop. Maybe it will make me a better player... Or I'll snap.
Hey all, a little late on the update, but I played in my local shop's FNM and wanted to give a rundown of the results. There were 19 total people playing and it went 5 rounds. My final record was 4-1 which was good enough for second place!
Here's the breakdown:
Round 1: vs Saheeli Combo brew; 2-0
Game 1 and 2: Not very memorable. I know All is Dust was great with regards to clearing out his ramp and slowing him down. Game 2 had Endbringer make sure Saheeli couldnt go infinite. Both games had me Tron-ning early. I do remember siding out all 4 of my chalices...not sure for what though lol
Round 2: vs Jund Shadow 2-0
Game 1 and 2 were pretty easy. Brought in Sword of Feast and Famine in game two. He scooped as soon as I cleared his board with ratchet bomb then attached the sword to my Thought Knot.
Round 3: vs Grixis Shadow 2-1
Pretty tight games. Game 2 I misplayed which cost me the game. Had two cards in hand, expedition map and random land. I played the map then the land. What I should have done is crack the map, grabbed and played Buried ruin, sac to get back my Balista, and kill him (he was at 4 life and I had a crap ton of mana to cast Balista). I realized it as soon as that first land for turn was played.
I brought in the 3 relics, sword of feast and famine, and collar I believe. Took out 2 Warping wails, spatial, and 2 reality smashers
Round 4: vs (mono white) Death and taxes 0-2
Real tough matchup but both were very close. He plays this deck specifically because of tron (all versions) and scapeshift. he plays 4 Tec Edges and 4 Ghost Quarters with that guy that doesnt allow you to search your library unless you pay 2.
Game 1 I play aggressive by playing GQ and dropping a Reality smasher instead of using my GQ to destroy his only white source, which in retrospect he said it would have been an major problem for him (he wouldnt have been able to search for a land because of his creature).
Game 2 went into the late game but his flying angels were eventually a problem. He aggressively destroyed 2 of my (four) lands on the same turn (Tec edge twice with the first ability on the stack) which left me with an all is dust and an ugin in hand but with only 6 mana, but having one draw left...I didnt draw mana source 7...game over
SB in Collar, Crucible, and Sword of war and peace; Out: 2 smashers and I think 1 wail
Round 5: vs Naya Burn 2-1
Very tough matchup.
Game 1: Top decked an all is dust to kill 3 of his creatures and I attacked in for the win
Game 2: Turn 4 dead
Game 3: Played a turn two chalice on 1 then I drew a dragon claw which I played on turn 3. Opponent would play a skullcrack, then follow up with 1-2 burn spells so that I dont gain more than 1 life. Those few life gains plus the chalice were enough to win on a ballista for 2 in response to his last helix which would have killed me.
In: Spatial, collar, dragon's claw, 2 hangarbacks, sword of war and peace. Out: Ugin, 2 All is dust, 2 smasher, one endbringer
Legacy: Burn (18-6-1 over multiple events)
Eldrazi and Taxes (under construction)
Modern: Eldrazi Tron (All sanctioned events; Record: 38-9-2 over ~12 Wed/Fri Night Modern events: 78% match win rate; last updated 9.13.17)
Jeskai Harbinger
Naya Burn (20-6-2 over multiple 1K and FNM events; retired)
Building: Esper control and a mill deck for fun and some variety.
Also, having only 4x green sources is probably not enough, I'd probably trim down on some utility lands (Cavern, Wreckage) or Wastes and and a couple more painlands (maybe Spire of Industry).

I figure the Ratchet Bomb is a hedge against not having the Chalices in the main. I'd probably run 2, not 3 though, and also drop in my Ugin.
I think 4 green sources is probably enough. I fishbowled about a dozen games, and it seems to work out. I'd think about using two Chromatic Star (or maybe Coldsteel Heart) instead of Mind Stone in this variant.
Ancient Stirrings feels overpowered tbh. It gives access to choices we wouldn't otherwise have. I'm testing some other stuff against "real" decks right now, but I'll come back to this later.
Edit: It's worth noting that the deck is a little more vulnerable to Blood Moon without Mind Stone, but I don't see Blood Moon much.
I wasn't even thinking about it as anti-discard. I was looking for a card draw engine. They all have some drawbacks. Cloister is interesting in that it has a nice beneficial side effect (stops discard) and also a potential significant drawback (you could lose your hand).
Bottled Cloister still feels like the best of what is available in colorless, but it still may not be good enough. Jayemdae Tome and Staff of Nin both feel worse.
I'll definitely put in some reps with Cloister, but it won't be in high stakes competition.
About casting a 2nd Cloister giving your hand back ... do they share the same exile space? Does "Exiled with Bottled Cloister" mean that one or any one?

I think 4 green sources is probably enough. I fishbowled about a dozen games, and it seems to work out. I'd think about using two Chromatic Star (or maybe Coldsteel Heart) instead of Mind Stone in this variant.
Ancient Stirrings feels overpowered tbh. It gives access to choices we wouldn't otherwise have. I'm testing some other stuff against "real" decks right now, but I'll come back to this later.
Edit: It's worth noting that the deck is a little more vulnerable to Blood Moon without Mind Stone, but I don't see Blood Moon much.
