The problem with Leyline is that you have to build around it a bit, which requires making sacrifices. It’s also makes the deck lack consistency, since the deck is much worse without it in the opening. I built was is probably the best Modern version of the Leyline Devotion though.
Now that I look at it, the deck could be fine tuned a a bit more, since I have 4x Finale the sideboard could be adjusted to take better advantage of that. Adding a Shalai, Voice of Plenty main deck is probably correct.
You can replace Finale with Chord fo Calling, not sure which is better for this deck.
This kind of response is what I am talking about. It seems that the original and persistent version of mono-green devotion (as indicated by nearly 400 pages here) is married to the sprawl / dryad combo. It doesn't want to take the small next step and just become a devoted devastation deck, and is more like a ramp deck in green.
I think that leyline strategies have a lot of nuance that is still to be explored, including the advantage present with the London mulligan, as well as considering this deck to be more combo than ramp/grind. I have been playing a stock version of Sam Black's deck which consistently (whether it's leyline + dork or Emissary + Nykthos) powers a PW on T2/3 which if survives pulls a bullet from the sideboard to dramatically impact the game. That style of play makes the extra mana that Devotion can generate a "bonus", making nearly every top deck after that potentially game winning (whether another Karn to play/fetch/play, or one of the 6 X creatures, or even a Leyline, which makes all your baddies bigger without having to splash white for Shalai.
In fact, one of the only reasons why I don't think that this deck is played more now is that it is susceptible to cheap removal (so early starts struggle when the dorks get bolted/pushed). Of course, I would imagine that's a problem in the original builds as well.
Regardless, I am glad to have discovered this archtype and am excited to play in it (coming from a previously energetic G/B Elves player).
Playing Leyline does not protect you from cheap removal (as you are left with a do-nothing engine card if they kill your dork)...but I do agree with you that the Leyline decks have nuances and lines we have not fully explored here. I’m excited to see your continued thoughts and lists!
The Leyline decks absolutely have just as much potential as Sprawl/Garruk decks. It will just take time for us to fully explore them. I think the "Leyline Package" is somewhat (not completely) interchangeable for the "Sprawl" package and we all still play very similar win-cons/payoffs for our ramp...but there are differences that do make for slightly different game play between the decks. You make some really great points. Can't wait to hear more! Please let us know how your deck does if you have the time.

I do! I know...I really like the card. I initially thought about making it a Leyline list with its printing; but the card draw/triggers from the Utopia Sprawl and Fertile Grounds was missed....I also went back and forth with win-conditions and it never really felt as strong as the Karn lists. But who knows with some of the new cards! The first card that got my attention was Setessan Champion; and now this! I re-opened my list; but was going to wait to see what else we got from this set in terms of enchantments...but the list is a blast to play. It will likely not reach the win percentage of the Karn lists; but I don't mind playing a slightly "worse" list that I enjoy playing at times.
The Heliod + Ballista may be something we can play. Creature combos are nice...and two card combos are great.
Both can be hit with Company (Ballista takes extra work though..but spike feeder can be too)...both can be hit with Oath of Nissa, and both with Once Upon a Time...could be a useful option.
That’s such a sick combo! I have a feeling this will be seeing some major play in Modern.
Ballista can technically Be hit with Coco...

I have to think they missed the combo (especially if they are concerned about Pioneer at all ); but I’m glad they did
I don’t even think we need Company. Between Oath of Nissa, OUaT, Finale, Chord, Genesis Hydra, Eladamri’s Call, etc. we have more than enough ways to reliably hit both creatures.
It’s a great win-con for the toolbox builds for sure.
I have no doubt people are already brewing Selesnya value decks with the combo (it’s different from other combos because it’s not infinite mana...it’s infinite Damage which is a HUGE difference. 2-card combos are far different when they win the game outright (see Twin). It’s even instant speed if you have the mana (as neither ability requires either creature to tap!).
I can’t be the only person that pretty much immediately saw the combos with Spiked Feeder and Ballista...so it will be all over the web before the set even comes out.
I think we have a few legs up on other versions as (a) we can get to enough mana to tutor for them and play them the same turn (with Chord, Eldamri’s Call, Finale, etc.), (b) and we have the mana to cast the creatures and trigger the abilities same turn.
This is where i would probably start (only because I’ve been liking Hydra in the counter-heavy meta and Oko is nuts...) but it likely is better in a more toolbox-y build.
Probably also only need two Heliod (and another tutor) but I always like to start with more than I may need and then perfect the deck as you test.
You could EASILY get rid of the Oko’s and Hydra’s as well and use the 7 spots for another tutor and some toolbox creatures:
Setessan Priest is great. A better Nylea’s Disciple. Great sideboard card for us in burn/aggrieved heavy mets’s. Probably now the life gain bullet of choice given how much life it czar gain at only 3-cmc!
We may actually get some cards :). I’m still holding out hope for the demigod

This is a ridiculous land combo enabler, and if anything could get lands out of your deck when you're flooded, but overall it is more powerful than people imagine.
Searches Shrine of the Forsaken Gods and Castle Garenbrig. This also allows you to run 1 of certain lands that can be Silver Bullets in certain matchups. Field of the Dead is a way to win a Matchup in a land focused Devotion Deck.
Even just paying 1GG isn't terrible or if you are flooded you can filter most of your land cards out from the deck.
Maybe Ayula's Influence is very nice with a full hand of Land cards along with Ayula, Queen Among Bears.
There are shenanigans, too. Like Gate Decks or "5 mana, search for all 3 Urza Lands" and imho there are a lot more out there.
At the moment, i would use it as a sideboard card against fliers decks like Spirits and had a close eye about brewings around/with this card.
So Renata is not what I was hoping our Demigod to be....
I don’t know why green is the only demigod to exceed 3-cmc; but they were obviously being more careful with Green than the other colors.
It’s not a bad card (and can go infinite in some scenarios...)....I guess a late-game 10/3 is better than other cards...but a 4-drop that dies to bolt is ROUGH. At 3-cmc it would see some play...at 4-cmc it just gets outclassed in many decks.
That said, “power equal to Devotion” can get out of hand quickly...could be fun to build around
I was really looking forward to this set...There have been some interesting cards for sure...but nothing I feel certain is a Green Devotion staple...yet! 🤞🏻
________
P.S. the 3-drop enhancement creature spoiled today does allow us to untap Nykthos and other ETB rapped lands with Arbor Elf (and less importantly allows us to attach Utopia Sprawl to other land) due to its ability to turn all lands into all basics.
I was really tempted to try to build a deck with the new Enchantments-matter Walker :). I use Utopia Sprawl, Oath of Nissa, Abundant Growth, and would happily use Courser of Kruphix and a few Banishing Light/Kenrith’s Transformation....I’m just not sure he’s worth it even if you have the enchantments to work with
If they gave us a single card in this set (outside of potentially Nylea’s Intervention) we maybe could have made it work.
I’m kinda peeved they left Green Devotion with literally nothing worthwhile...two days left, so I’ll keep my hopes up !
If you tap a permanent for mana, it produces three times as much of that mana instead.
Not sure if this is what we want to be doing by the time we can produce 7 mana, but good lord this will set up some stupid big plays. "I tap Nykythos for....30?"

Haha! I thought the same thing. It’s 99% win-more; (as normally we are good if we have 7 mana)...but maybe a fun Banefire deck could make use of him :). Who knows. I hate that he dies to Dismember (the most played card in Modern right now) as well as enchantment removal.
Most likely a commander-only card...but absolutely would be a blast to play. I haven’t tested it though; so I honest can’t say it’s bad or not Modern playable (I hate to do that for a card I haven’t played). There may be a way to utilize him I’m not thinking of.
Christopher GOOCH made a top 8 with Green Devotion!
I’ll get this list up on the Primer tomorrow :). I’m cleaning it up (putting a “history” section in but focusing mainly on new lists).
I hate that they keep acting like this is somehow a “Pioneer Deck” when (a) the deck plays multiple illegal cards in Pioneer and (b) we’ve been playing the deck for years and some of us have been playing Karn since before Pioneer was a format. I do, however, appreciate that Todd’s domination in Pioneer did put some light back on the archetype’s viability. He can take credit for it in Modern too if he wants (as he has been a great voice for Devotion).
I haven’t been playing Llanowar Tribe recently (as my meta has a lot of bolts and decays...but I may have to sleeve them up anyways )
I can’t tell you how happy I am. For those of you to the forum; I have been a relative nut about Genesis Hydra for years and have been a very big advocate for Karn in particular (and walkers in general) for some time.
I was high on LLanowar Tribe; but had moved away from Burning-Tree Emissary and Devited Druid in my play history...I would not have seen their power in the new builds without the community here.
It’s by our community coming together that such awesome lists get made! Christopher Gooch did such an amazing job. What an awesome Devotion player. Hopefully he hops on here so we can thank him!
I think it may finally be time for people to see how good we’ve know this deck could be for a long time!
P.S. Will update the Primer ASAP to add the newest cards/list.
I'm not sure how hard the lattice ban hits the Karn devotion lists, as it was a pretty solid lock and we could get it out as fast as any deck in modern. I'm hoping i'll get back into my regular Thursday night modern tourneys at the LGS to try out some new Devotion things.
On the other hand, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove really tempts me to put Titanshift back together again.
2020 seems to be starting off in a good way for Modern.
The Lattice lock was great; but I am still playing Karn without it. I’ll let everyone know how it goes and if/when i remove it if the banning effectively killed it. Karn is still a great toolbox; and there are plenty of other won-cons it can tutor for.
Having said that, obviously we don’t HAVE to play Karn. I still think it’s worth it; but we will be fine either way.

Well I Just learned about the new banning. I hate that Wizards is just banning everything so quickly, instead of banning one or 2 cards and seeing how the format responds before banning something else! Banning Oko I can understand, as it is a very one dimensional, oppressive card, that wants to be played in almost any deck that can cast it, though I’m not happy about banning Mox Opal. The Urza decks will already take a hit with Oko being banned, and Opal allows for so many decks to function. Also not thrilled with the Lattice ban as it virtually ruins Karn, TGC.
anyways, after seeing this second place result for Leyline Devotion, I have some newfound hope for that strategy. Before when I was playing my most finalized iteration of Leyline Devotion it was doing very well and fun to play. This result confirms why it was performing well.
Not even sure I really like his version, but it’s hard to argue with this results and I haven’t Analyzed it much, or playtested it at all. I really, like Vivien though, and I’ve been praising that card since it was spoiled.
My versions is more toolboxy, incorporates the Vizier combo, and doesn’t use Karn anyway. The list I had put together is still legal. I’ll post it again.
