There are a lot of ideas (which you will see in any thread where a deck isn't 100% figured out and even more so with a mechanic like devotion where pretty much any good green card becomes viable)...but I tend to tell people that want to play as competitively as possible to start with the "stock" lists until we've proven the other decks. I am all for trying to find ways to break the mechanic; but until we have results with decks outside of the "core" decks; I like to point people to the stock lists (if their main concern is just going to an FNM and spiking it). I personally believe that many of the brews on here are just as good; but it takes a long time to tune a deck and get the appropriate results. The process, however, is the fun part!
On Bonfire
I personally like bonfire against affinity and infect. I've found that traditionally a Bonfire of the Damned for 2 will generally take care of a majority of any board they have. I also tend to side in other potential creature hate (like Oath of Chandra, bolt if you play it, beast within, etc.). I would say I'm 50/50 on miracle-ing them vs hardcasting them. Often a Bonfire for 1 will be enough as well. I know Elecktrickery is one cheaper at that point if you hard cast it; but I like the idea of having the potential late game to do a bonfire for X=3+ if they somehow pump up their army in a more grindy game. I tend to board into the "interactive/disruptive" deck when playing the hyper-fast aggro decks; so often times we can get to board states where they have like 3-4 creatures with 2 or more toughness...so I like bonfire there. OF course, Elecktrickery, Eternal Witness, Elecktrikery is at thing too...so I wouldn't discount that card at all if you prefer to play it.
Gogg's List and Craterhoof
I totally agree that Gogg's list is a very straight-forward, streamlined list. Making Eidolon of Blossoms work would be HUGE. It's a little weak to board wipes; but the card draw should help that in a big way. It's certainly a list I think many would enjoy playing and could do well with. Sam Black mentioned that Eidolon of Blossoms was a potential powerful interaction with Oath of Nissa...so there has to be something there
I agree that Craterhoof Behemoth can work as essentially a 1-card combo for most Devotion decks. It currently is probably underplayed. Given the feact that it can be tutored with Primal Command, Oath of Nissa (dug for rather than technically tutored), Summoners Pact, and Genesis Hydra...even as a 1-2 of it is a powerful and potentially consistent win-con. It certainly should be considered in any creature-based list.
Looks spectacular! Obviously the results speak for themselves. I will test something similar out asap. Funnily enough, it is extremely similar to what I side into in many match ups!
I would be interested on your thoughts of Elvish Visinoary vs. Burning-Tree Emissar. BTE is awesome with Genesis Wave and Xenagos, the Reveler and it definitely speeds us up. I just didn't know if the card advantage made Visionary superior (especially in a list running Curio). I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
I will definitely take some ideas from here and incorporate them into what I'm currently playing to see if I can improve the list. I know we are playing extremely similar cards/lists; but tuning is the key to getting the deck "stable". It's great to have someone to bounce ideas and thoughts off of who has played the deck so much. Thanks for posting this.
**P.S. I have also upped my Birds of Paradise count to 4 copies...it's just too important to have a turn-1 dork not to play 12 copies. **
I agree about the birds. Going to drop 2 boon satyr for 2 birds.
I like that idea. Boom Satyr is a cool card for battlefield interactions; but quickly getting to 3-4 mana is the most important thing for your deck to eccel
AS many know, I've been working on trying to make the "Walker Combo" list work as well without Genesis Wave...Pedros has since brought up some great points about the differences between the "Xenagos" (or faster, more combo-centric) versions and the "Karn" (more interactive, disruptive) versions. I haven't had too many issues with having both in the main; however I do agree that it didn't feel as "clean". In the end, that may not matter; but I'm down to the exact set of cards to test (and just have to find the best configuration main and board).
Garry238 also made a great point about Craterhoof Behemoth essentially being a 1-card combo...which got me to thinking:
Why wouldn't I add a 1-of Craterhoof Behemoth to the Xenagos/Fast version? It saves me some clicks online (as you can just build an army of 4-6 satyr's and then tutor a Craterhoof Behemoth) it can sometimes just be an "oops I win" card, and in the craziest of scenarios we can even bounce it With that, I'm going to try out this list after I've completed testing the version with both Karn and Xenagos in the main:
This deck still has the ability to turn into basically two different "Karn" versions post-board if the match up requires it (one is more "Land-Hate" and one is more "Creature-Hate".) In the end it may be better just to start with the Karn version (like Pedros); but I kinda like having the options. I'm down to pretty much the exact cards I think are viable for the deck (all those in the above list along with Burning-Tree Emissary, Nissa, Worldwaker...) so now it's literally just finding the correct assortment in the main deck (and which will go in the board).
I think the highest impact sideboard cards are white - I want to cast one spell, typically a permanent that buys me enough time to close out the game. Rest in Peace, Stony Silence, even Suppression Field seems strong here. Maybe even Circle of Protection Red for burn.
You just got me thinking about Sphere of Safety. This card could be ridiculous against aggro decks. Hell, any deck is going to have a had time attacking for a win if they have to pay 3, 4 or 5 mana for their single creature. This could be a powerhouse in an enchantment Eidolon/Courser themed deck.
My deck has been doing great things with Genesis Wave. I know it's not synergistic with Oath of Nissa, but running 3 or more Eidolon of Blossoms makes wave stupid good I've noticed. I regularly draw 1-4 cards off of a Wave where X is 6. I can usually play at least a couple of the cards I draw off the wave on the same turn! Last night I got 9 permanents out off of x=6 wave and still had 2 extra cards in hand that I drew off the wave before I passed the turn.
Before I get too tangential, consider the power of a Sphere of Safety in a Gen. Hydra or Wave deck with enchantment themes. It may help fix the age old "I cast a huge wave, but my opponent still won on the next turn" problem. I tend to have at least 4 and up to 7 enchanments on the board after a mid sized X=5-7 wave.
I'm going to see if I can put it into a Devotion brew for sure. What do guys think of the potential for Sphere of Safety?
Hello. I'm interested in playing Tooth and Nail, but didn't see a dedicated thread for the deck. Is this where that discussion would take place, or did I just miss it? Thanks
Haha I love the combo elves meets Planeswalker combo deck. I dont know why no ones gone this route yet. Here's what I've thrown together so far. Its lightning fast and seems pretty reliable. There's 3 ways to infinitely combo off, there's lots of fuel for xenagos, everything (except curio) is fetchable via Oath, the beatdown with Ezuri/Garruk is strong, and a bounceable Shaman of the pack is deadly.
I really like this list! I mean really, really. I have always wanted an excuse to play Karn outside of Tron. This may be it. As an offshoot of your testing, can you try to record the number of games where the 1of abundant growth makes a difference? It may be that slot could become a 1of Karn main board? I know that would run you up the curve, but we get there. Just a thought. Keep brewing, I really like where things are going.

It is! The tooth and nail list that has seen the most success recently (especially online) has been:

Looks Fun! I actually brewed Elf devotion for a long time. It is actually what got me started on this thread/primer when I first started (although you'd probably have to go back about 100+ pages to see it :). I still think that a combo elves deck is viable with Nykthos and Curio. I actually also run the Combo Elves thread where I promote that deck (although it is not a very active thread). As an aside, Beastcaller Savant allows you to "go infinite" with Shaman of the Pack as well with Curio (as it gives you the one black you need every turn...thank God he's haste ) It is certainly an avenue to look into (as Combo Elves is nuts...I can say from experience). My only qualm with elves was there was slightly less card draw than my other brews and it is really poor against board wipes.
I hadn't ever put Xenagos in the Elf deck before, however. It's fun to see them smooshed together...I had never put it together that they may work well together It certainly could work! Very cool idea! I can't wait to hear more about it. Seems both fast and somewhat inevitable (given the numerous infinite lines). Really great idea.

Yessir! I will make sure to make note of it (and try to note how often I could have used it if it was a Karn). A turn 3 or 4 Karn Liberated will often win a game all by itself...
I've worked on trying to find ways to have both Karn and Xenagos in the same main; but they do make the deck play differently. Because Xenagos, the Reveler creates mana, you can often tap out to cast a Genesis Hydra (or only leave 1-2 mana floating) to go infinite hitting the last piece...and of course he works better with Craterhoof Behemoth
Karn Liberated, however is a win-con all on its own. It also adds removal to the deck (which can be important). It would be nice to sneak in 1 option for removal main. Karn is a better fit in a more "grindy" version of the deck (i.e. when paired with Primal Command and removal). Currently I have Xenagos main to be a little more combo-centric game one...and then I side in to a Karn version of the deck against opponents where it is a better match up.
I feel really good with where the deck is. I feel like I'm down to basically deciding on a few cards main board. I have been surprised how the Elvish Visionary instead of Burning-Tree Emissary has changed the deck. I was so used to abusing BTE, but also used to kind of having those games where I could fly through my opening hand and get to top-deck mode quickly. I do think the BTE is an amazing Devotion card and can speed up devotion decks by as much as a full turn; but in decks playing Cloudstone Curio; you probably should be playing Elvish Visionary if you can fit only one 2-drop. I did think about not running Courser of Kruphix and simply running both Visionary and BTE (as they play VERY well together); but I was afraid that with as aggro as the meta currently is that (a) I wouldn't have anything to block creatures in burn and zoo without dying and (b) I wouldn't have any creatures that survive Pyroclasm and/or Anger of the Gods...it's probably something worth testing either way.
I do also, however, like the fact that Courser of Kruphix can bounce an enchantment...he's pretty darn strong, but BTE + Visionary instead of Visionary + Courser still may be worth testing.
Regardless, I feel pretty good about where the deck is at. I'm kind of OCD, so I just "feel" better when I know I can fetch most of everything with Oath of Nissa. I do think that Craterhoof Behemoth is probably something I should have added a LONG time ago I am open to criticism though. Mainly the big questions are:
1. Should I play Courser of Kruphix or Burning-Tree Emissary?
2. Is there a way to get Karn in the main deck, or should I just side into it for games 2 and 3 where it is better?
3. If Karn is going in the main, is Xenagos necessary at all (i.e. if we are going to play a more interactive, disruptive version of the deck...do we play Xenagos at all?)
I do like what Pedros did with his list as well. I think it is a great example of a Walker Devotion Combo deck built around Karn.
Anywho, love to hear your thoughts on where (if at all) you think the deck can improve. That goes without saying of course, for anyone who wants to chime in
Very cool to see a couple of sucessful takes on the walker combo deck. How about Carven caryatid in the courser slot? It gives you a card back immediately, so it's a little faster than courser, and it's a stout blocker. It's a bummer that it doesn't give you a body to swing with, but it might be a little quicker out of the gate.
I can't stand playing with my top card revealed, and that's the substitution I always imagined making if I got curios and tried the combo build.
I think this was discussed earlier but what do we think about World Break over Acidic Slime in the side board? (Assuming your meta calls for slime would breaker be better)

Standard:GR Eldrazi Ramp
Modern: Mono Green Devotion
7 mana is a lot more than 5, but the body on World Breaker is a lot more relevant. I think Slime wins out most of the time, but it really depends on the deck.
It's worth noting that breaker triggers on cast, so you don't get to exile anything if you cheat it out with wave/chord/tooth and nail.

Carven Caryatid is a really interesting idea. Could work really well in the deck. I will absolutely test that. Thanks for the input!
One other question. Does anyone have any experience against the Bx Eldrazi decks? How do we do against the match up, anything I should expect?
Obviously it depends on the build (i.e. whether you're playing Tooth and Nail, Traditional Devotion or another variation); but generally we we kind of race them. The decks with Primal Command in the main can be pretty powerful by cutting them off their mana for a turn (i.e. forcing them to play the same land over and over again); however the rest simply race.
I haven't had a TON of play against them yet, but I do think that we are ok against them (as even though they are a big mana deck; they still play on a slightly "fair" axis (i.e. not going infinite on turn 3, etc.) and Devotion generally can play against any non-combo deck quite well.
I do think it's important that we make sure those playing Tooth and Nail and Traditional devotion also feel comfortable posting their lists and discusing their decks. This is not just a thread for those of us brewing. I LOVE seeing all of the brews and hope they keep coming; but I am also going to begin more routinely posting results on MTGO and in paper of Green Devotion lists that have done well. For the most part that is currently Tooth and Nail and Traditional Devotion...
So please do post your list and findings even if you feel you are playing an already "known" list like Tooth and Nail or "Traditional" devotion...it is so important for new readers/viewers to get a feel for those decks as well.
I think the best way to look at Green Devotion now is whether you play an Aggro, Midrange, or Combo List.
Traditional Devotion would fall under a "Midrange" build.
Tooth and Nail would fall under "Combo"
Walker devotion would also fall under "Combo" and many of the brews we've seen would fall under Aggro or Combo (as it's hard to do better than Traditional devotion in a Midrange version). This is probably the best way for those coming to our thread to get a feel for where they would fall on the spectrucm. We all of course play the same basic core (as seen in the Primer) but what we do with that core is where we begin to splinter off.

I also really like the board. I love the whole Outpost Siege + 2x Burning-Tree Emissary + Cloudstone Curio = another infinite damage combo while still utilizing cards that can help in many match ups. Slaughter Games pretty much ends most combo decks. And of course Bonfire of the Damned is just great for any deck that tries to go wide.
I will definitely take some ideas from here and incorporate them into what I'm currently playing to see if I can improve the list. Garry238 also made a great point about Craterhoof Behemoth essentially being a 1-card combo...which got me to thinking:

2. if Xenagos, the Reveler creates 2/2 HASTE tokens.
3. If both Oath of Nissa and Genesis Hydra can tutor for both...
Why wouldn't I add a 1-of Craterhoof Behemoth to the Xenagos/Fast version?
