Team,
New deck just won GPYokohama. It is playing 0 copies of Steel Overseer and 3 copies of Throne of Geth. What are your takes on this build and the prioritization of support artifacts (Animation module & Throne) over support creatures like (Overseer & Mimic)???
Land base seems super weird to me. 4 Llanowar and 2 Pendlehaven both seem risky, and going up to 21 lands when you already removed staying power from the deck seems... questionable? Maybe I'm missing something.
I'm very interested in the base idea of ditching the value for more aggro, but why not + 1 Mimic -1 Throne? Mimic seems pretty vital here to blitz out things fast if that's the plan (Maybe his idea is just to drop everything that get 1 for 1'd?). A lot of decks nowadays are good at removing overseer, and also weaker to faster board states, so I'm on board with at least testing it.
Y'all,
How do we beat Whir prison? I need help with good sideboard options and optimal lines of play.
Also, Pheonix is a pretty bad matchup...Thoughts here too?
Best,
Tasigurl
OK so it's honestly really hard, but there are a couple ways to actually kill them:
1. Skip around bridge with an Inkmoth Nexus, a Walking Ballista, or even a Spellskite postboard. [Doesn't work if they spyglass ravager]
2. Use Animation Module to proliferate their chalices to 3/4 if possible.
3. Get a lucky Nature's Claim that lets you get through.
4. Side out cards that are slow// cards that don't get around their nonsense. So - Steel Overseer, - Welding Jar, -throne of geth
Side note: What do we think of decks cutting Evolutionary Leap for 4th Welding Jar?
Stille_Nacht,
I totally agree the land base is "abnormal". 4x Llanowar Reborn feels slow and a little clunky. However, I played the decklist last night and I am a FIRM believer in keeping our Sac-outlet count to at least 7 or 8 cards. The Throne of Geth, Phyrexia's Core and Arcbound Ravager make the deck run so smoothly.
(My Theory on playing this deck) The deck is all about building and maintaining "Potential energy" for a powerful finish. Our deck is unique because we can move resources around as needed. Sac-Outlets keep us in control.
I am 100% open to testing Evolutionary Leap; however, I am slightly concerned with replacing it for a "0" cost spell like Welding Jar. We have tons of "2-drops" and need to keep that count manageable. Test it out and tell me how it goes. My impulse is to replace a throne with leap and test from there.
Evolutionary leap was always terrible, especially main deck. Throne of geth is great, being a sac out let and an almost steel overseer that doesn't die to creature removal.
I'm running a couple gemstone caverns for those games on the play and your tempo can't just keep up. 4 and 3 are way too many, 2 or 1 is good. Also lanowar reborn is terrible, you run at least 12 1 drops, and around 20 2 drops. You can't afford to take any of your first turns off for 1 counter on a creature. And if you can you were winning already.
I like metallic mimics, and if another x/x construct is printed expect that stock to go up, but it can be super clunky with multiples and no payoff with free ballistas or walkers. Welding jar activates opal, which this deck can have problems doing on turn 1 or 2, and protects creatures which you need to keep on the board if you want shenanigans. It's significantly better here than in standard affinity.
It's nice to see lists that aren't "copy whatever matt nass is playing".
The new goblin engineer looks pretty promising, though we'd have to go into red. The ability to constantly trigger modular or walker seems somewhat enticing, though I'm not sure it's good enough to actually get included.

From my mild testing, I'm more interested in Scrapyard Recombiner instead. Doesn't require modifying the mana base, tutors for all creatures in the deck but Arcbound Ravager and Metallic Mimic (it also tutors for another copy of itself), has Modular 2 so it provides value even if it dies on the spot, findable with Ancient Stirrings, guarantees an endgame that dodges Ensnaring Bridge if uninterrupted by tutoring for Walking Ballista and eventually popping itself to feed Ballista, has its tap ability not require mana, has its sac ability not target, is auto-pumped upon ETB by Hardened Scales thanks to Modular, and probably more. Costing 3 mana may be unpleasant, and so might being hit by Stony Silence and the static ability of Karn, the Great Creator, but I think Scrapyard Recombiner has too many pros over Goblin Engineer.
True true. Also, we have very few odd mana drops anyway, so a lot of the time we would have cast a 2 drop with 3 mana anyway. I like that it can even sac itself, somewhat guaranteeing value. It's really too bad arcbound ravager is a beast
I can't imagine what would make up for this. The only thing I can think of that would make this ok is a mainboardable colorless or green removal spell. And I mean "as good as our other mainboard" not dismember.
Titan, GB, and Value Company were core "good matchups" which are just gone now.

Quite a few more cards to come. Crossing fingers we get a few really great tools. If we don't get anything decent we are seriously going to struggle!!
