I’ve been considering building a stompy variant but I’ve never played a stompy deck. Any insight into what are strong match ups? Weak match ups and why? Any pitfalls to avoid? Etc? I’ve read the primer page but it doesn’t talk much about weaknesses.
I did see one user mentioned terminus and Planeswalkers as problems. Thanks in advance!
In my experience, anything regarding non-interactive Combo can be really hard for this deck, because we do not have the Tools to interact with These type of decks, and we are on average a turn slower than decks like burn or Bushwhacker Zoo.
So decks like Grishoalbrand, Counters Company, Infect and Elves are really hard. Storm and Dredge are an exception, Dryad Militant and Scavenging Ooze allow us to interact with the graveyard. Ad Nauseam is also not that bad, because they Need a Little more time to go off.
Quite good Matchups are Midrange Decks, especially Mardu Pyromancer, because our protection spells and Cards like Strangleroot Geist let us push through their removal, and Steel Leaf Champion ignores their chump blockers. Other Aggro variants can be good too, since they are not able to build up a board as big as we can. So if we survive the first waves of decks like Burn, Zoo and maybe Humans, we are able to outclass their creatures and push through their Board with Trample and Aspect.
Control can actually be favorable, our protection spells and the Dryad against Snapcaster really help us out here. Also the Geist, which trades 2 for 1. I've seen multiple Control Players Play Jace on Turn 4 and then die on the next attack. So, Planeswalkers can be a Problem, but more in a way that they give your Opponent a way back into the game while stabilizing. There is no Planeswalker which can handle our whole board at once, and sometimes we are even able to ignore them.
Terminus is actually a Problem, just like Settle the Wreckage. The only Chance here is to Play around it, and to not commit to much material to the board. I guess it's a matter of experience. But These Cards made our matchup definitely harder.
So far, I can't think of that many pitfalls to avoid. Here it would help to see the list you want to start with.
Just as the primer suggests, you should avoid anything above three CMC, which is just too slow. And there are always People suggesting Nykthos and a Devotion plan for the deck, which is simply nonsense for this strategy.
And of Course there is the playstyle which you just have to learn - Sequencing and Role assessment are the Key factors.
I would love to see your first attempt on a list, do you have any ideas so far?
Thanks for the insight! I've decided to go with two different decktypes. I play mtg online and with such a wide variety I thought green white would be more prudent. My traditional list:
27 creatures
sideboard unsure I took a variety of cards from the decklists posted here and I haven't decided on anything yet.
As for the second list. It is an eldritch evolution theme and I haven't worked out the best targets or what other spells to use. My thought process is that evolution provides a lot of options with such a wide field as mtg online. With that being said it becomes a psuedo midrange deck. If this is the appropriate place to discuss such a variant I'd be happy to do so, but I don't want to steer the forum away from the traditional stompy without permission.
I've had stompy as a joke deck with my friends play group, now it has turned into something a little more competitive. I wanted to know if anyone ever considered the interaction with Greenbelt Rampager and Experiment one\Pelt Collector? I apologize if this has already been discussed I currently run 4 PC, 2 EO 1, 2 Dryad Militant, and 2 Rampager with some great results and some mixed.

Maybe the rampager can work in builds with plenty of Pelt and E1?
Alone, the rampager is a 3/4 for GGG which is subpar compared to our other 3 cmc beaters which are a 5/4 and 4/5 for GGG. Also, an Eidolon of great revel will kill you if you had a rampager instead of baloth or champion.
Greenbelt Rampager works really well with Experiment One, Narnam Renegade, and Pelt Collector with Talara's Battalion to a lesser extent. I've tried quite a few combinations of these cards and have found that 3 Rampagers is the magic number if you have 5-8 E1/NR/PC. This synergy comes with the price of potentially cutting some number of Dryad Militant, competing for the 1 drop slots though.
In that build I wonder if Greenwheel Liberator is a better fit than Talara's Battalion. TB has trample, of course, but GL can land on t2 off fetchland cracking which you're likely to be running anyway to support your Narnams (or after your opponent's removal on your t1 drop swinging on t2), and it provides a counter-carrying body to make subsequent Avatar of the Resolute instances beefier.
A 2/2 on turn 2 that becomes a 4/4 attacker turn 3.. and calls another one of it's kind. Might be too slow, because it takes our entire turn 3 to evolve him. However, still needs to be tested.
I think Riot is going to give us at least one good creature for stompy. Anyone playing red splash stompy should be looking at Zhur-Taa Goblin as it’s exactly what we want (2 mana for either a 3/3 with Avatar-synergy counter or a 2/2 haste) - but I’m hoping for a design in that realm on a mono green.

Instant
Costs 1 less if it targets a creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it
Target creature you control fights target creature you don't control.
This card is exactly what we have been looking for!!

I mean it is a slightly better Mutant's prey, and that hasn't really seen any play. But this might be enough to see a little play.
Oh whoops, I misremembered Mutant's Prey's cost being 2 mana.. My bad!
Yeah, I completely forgot that we don't use that card because of reasons I won't list now. Titanic Brawl is still a bit better because of versatility, but we'll have to test this and see if it's any good.
It is bad, beginning of story. Scenario 1: you can't use it because no creature with counter. Scenario 2: you can use it and trade 2 card (spell and creature) to kill 1 scenario 3: enemy creature, as example gurmag, is to big. It is bad, end of story.

I do have to agree to this. Still better to pay 4 life with dismember to kill a gurmag, than try an "instant speed prey upon". We are an aggro deck that don't really have much card advantage.. so getting two for one'd is really bad, it's the reason I never used prey upon.
Still same bad card. Adding an extra maybe possibility at 4 mana doesn't change anything. You can add a third mode for 6 mana and mode number 4 at 8 mana... It stays bad. You play red? So use bolt for 1 mana. Kills creatures and walker for only 1 mana
It offers your opponent a 2 for 1 if they respond to it with removal on your creature. Then you lose your creature and this spell, and they keep their creature and have spent only a removal spell.
You said it hits players/planeswalkers? Read again. It can’t hit players. It’s just creatures or planeswalkers.
HI im new here but not new to the deck. it has been a pet deck of mine that i have grown to really love and enjoy. hopefully i can bring some tournament reports to you all in the near future.
