Hi guys!
Took the deck after month without playing it. I'm on 4 hexdrinker 4 dryad militant and 4 experiment one as 1 drop. Saw few lists playing pelt collector and noble hierarche. What do you think about those 2?
Also, what are our plan against tibalt trickery and oops all spell?
Pelt Collector is doable but you have to put in the fetches to realistically make it work. Hierarch seems like it be a good idea but its the card you dont normally want to use to attack so its more a turn 2 card but it actuality its a turn one card to help develop turn 2-4 if possible, so it conflicts decently with how this deck runs. You want aggro turn one in any of the usual 1 drops this deck sports.
I have been binge-reading this thread (almost halfway thru, Pelt Collector just got released, YAY!) and the amount of passion and knowledge thats been pour into is nothing short of outstanding!
Anyways, i'm coming back to MTG after a really long hiatus (my last purchase was a Pummel deck from Prophecy, so you go do the math) and after a botched experience trying to build an Adeliz-Wizard-Tribal deck, i set my eyes back on green, after all its the color i started playing magic with all those years ago.
Long story shot, last week i snagged a really good deal on a prebuilt albeit a little old Stompy build. Here it should be:
I'm yet to get the cards, should happen this week, but i already know (and should i, after all this reading) of a couple of upgrades i need to do to bring this deck up to date. But before rolling the dough, i guess it would be smart to ask here for some extra advice.
The list i initially coined to send to my LGS was this:
My meta actually is non existant given covid restricions and the fact that i never played a FNM before. So im bassically left with playtesting with four other friends. They have an UR Delver Prowess with a *****ton of counters, a Red Goblin Token-machinegun and the other two are another mono green deck and a mashed-up Golgari that barely holds it together.
Given all that, what would be my best course of action regarding purchases and upgrades? Im not really on a budget, but fetches and Hexdrivers are really out of question. And i dont want/need to spend a ton of money just to trash my friends. FNM seem far away so its not a priority nor it will be for the next couple of sets, im sure. ALAS, i could also get away with a 60 card sideboard, but that's neither the idea
I don't have a potato, but if you made it this far im really thankfull!
I run 3 Barkhide Troll. They're super good and immune to spot removal which a lot of creatures lack, feel free to run up to 3-4 which makes them better than Dungrove since it's 1 mana cheaper, and combos better with Avatar of the Resolute
Scavenging Ooze chills as 3 copies in my SB since if I Don't face any graveyard decks they don't grow which could be an issue.
Steel Leaf Champions are a must a 4 copy since they do everything Leatherback does but better, ie not being blocked by 1/1 and 2/2 tokens all day which forces your opponent to throw more useful creatures their way.
I run 4 EO and 4 PCs just because they both do different things. EO is great early, and PC is great mid-late when your things die. The amount is up to you to experiment with
I run only 19 total lands, 13 Forest, 2 Treetop Village, and 4 Nurturing Peatland. I can't attest to how good Abundance is, that is up to you and your meta.
I don't run Blossoming Defense, the main defacto card of choice is Vines of Vastwood it's a way better Blossoming with the added upside of making your own opponent unable to target their own creatures. So Temur Battlerage fizzles
The sideboard I've tuned to deal with some of my decks overall weaknesses.
Scavenging Ooze x3: Dredge and Graveyard Decks
Damping Sphere x3: Because **** Tron and Storm, and Prowess.
Veil of Summer x3: Jund and control decks mess with us too much to keep an established board state.
Deglamer x2: Let's go Heliod and maybe some Boggles
Kitchen Finks x2: Life gain is an issue with this deck, and burn matchups suck. This helps us stay in the game just a little longer.
Old-Growth Troll x2: If you're facing a control deck, this guy works wonders, a little less aggressive than his cousin (Steel Leaf Champion), but with the added bonus of coming back whenever
The overall suggestions I would make to that otherwise good starting list would be
Cut:
1 Rhonas
4 Leatherback Baloth
2 Dungrove Elder
1 Thrun the Last Troll
1 Yorvo
The reason being is that they're all much too slow, offer no inherent protection, or trample, and are otherwise already replaced by better versions. Stompy as a whole is a "fair" deck. It's not throwing a million spells at your face, not comboing off on T3, not countering every spell you play. It's trying to go sideways as fast as possible while giving your opponent too many creatures to deal with.
Long story shot, last week i snagged a really good deal on a prebuilt albeit a little old Stompy build. Here it should be:
Wow didn't realise hexdrinkers price had shot up that much.
Your list still needs another 1 drop as a 2 of. With narnams and hexdrinkers out of viable budget range then either Kessig Prowler or pelt collector are your next best bets.
Personally I'm running 2 mb scooze ATM because of the amount of lurrus and unearth decks in the meta. But there an argument that it's no needed. And barkhind troll is a solid alternative.
For the 3 drops you've gone pretty top heavy (as far as curve is concerned) I'd personal go for a combo of 3 steel leaf champions and 2 Old-Growth Troll.
Old-Growth Troll took me by surprise but between the native trample for getting over defending faties and being another solid card to have on the field against a boardwipe. He's been over performing
For removal you want a combo of savage swipe and dismember. (Swipes better against burn and d&t decks and dismember is better against shadow and kroxa)
That said if you are facing alot of kroxa and shadow your best bet is still rhonas as he just stone walls anything without temur battlerage
Land base is complicated and very budget dependant
Ideally you want a small white splash for the SB. But the most optimal for budget is probably
3 g/b horizon land
1 treetop Village
2 Haspeth oasis
15 forests
(I personally still like a 21 land 39 other stuff split and this has become less painful with affordable horizon lands) and you don't want to many pain lands with the amount of burn style play currently in the meta
Snakeskin Veil is the new pump spell on the block but as it is I've not been impressed yet.
I would consider dropping to 2 rancors cutting some vines for defenses and and maybe droping 1 aspect. I've been running extra removal in the form of savage swipe in this slot as I dose act life a pump spell a significant amount of the time.
Inscription of Abundance is interesting hand I feel holds alot of promise for when the meta shifts back. It's soild untility card thats kicker is usable. I feel like it's a much better card against midrage than agro and as the meta is particularly fast ATM it's not it's time to shine.
Hi guys, sory for the delay, and thank you for all the great imput! At first i had some trouble getting the missing pieces but finally i grabbed all except 2x Barkhide Trolls.
I lifted Loki's deck almost entierly, missing the Peatlands (Modern Horizon 2, is that you?) so really greatfull for that!
I played past wednesday with my friends and it was a blast, for me at least. No one expected the pounding to be so fast and so hard, im in love!. Neither of them have any sort of competitive deck, maybe the UR Delver tho its still budget (i.e. no Snapcaster) so its not really a fair comparison. This is what i have so far, the sideboard is a mess and is mostly filled with cards i have or want to try out.
I've taken no notes, but here are some random comments:
- Never got to play and trigger Syr Faren once. He died to removal almost instantly so i pushed it to the SB after a couple of games. In goes Bayou Groff.
- Bayou Groff was a fun card to play, i got a couple of them in some boosters and just threw it in here for the lols, and lol'd i did! Never got to trigger Strangleroot with it, which would have been ideal, but dropping a 5/4 on turn 2 left their heads spinning in more than one occasion
- Tried Dungrove, but got countered the only game i draw it.
- Vines and Aspect where never really clutch, nor i felt i needed them as a wincon.
- Treetop is good and so unexpected!
After the first few games it was clear i was gonna have an easy night, so at the end there wasn't much need of sideboarding and just stomped my way through most of the time.
I didn't kept track of total wins, went around 6-1 against delver and 3-1 against goblins, both of which i lost after a mulligan to 5.
I feel the same way with Syr, but the fact she draws removal is good, at least in my opinion, since it's less removal for Steel Leaf, Avatar, a big PC/OE, etc. I've had some good success with her landing.
I've wanted to play with Bayou. However how did you manage him. I'm just afraid with no inherent protection, trample, and needing to shrink our boardstate.
Vines/Aspect are there for that big push, and to make combat scarier for the opponent. Plus much needed protection. Since sometimes we fold to interaction.
No one ever suspects the Treetop.
Overall good job on your wins!!

It's easy to believe you're a god when you're twice as powerful as everyone else.
Looks like we have a new card Sylvan Anthem
GG
Enchantment
Anthem 1 for green
When ever a G creature etb under your control scry 1
Now this is an interesting one as I don't think it directly replaces anything and we've never had an equivalent. But between the devotion and the solid repeat etb and and solid anthem on 2 makes me think this is a new staple once we've found where it fits
I feel like this is either a 2 of its it's ok or a 4 of if it turns out to be really good (and honestly strangleroot with a copy of this around seems pretty good)
I'm most excited for the repeatable scry as that means it becomes much easier to fin a creature when we need to rebuild and pump spells when we need to kill.
Biggest downside is the lack of +1 counter support (but otherwise it would probably have become the best card in the deck )
I feel like this doesn't take up a creature spot. And its more impactful on lists with a higher density of 1-2 drops.
Looks like we have a new card Sylvan Anthem
Thoughts?
Not good enough. This is primarily good only when you have the time to build wide board and your opponent also doesn't have the removal to whittle it down, so kinda rare (mostly happens vs dredge, and non red/black tribal strats).
if you cast it turn two, you effectively only added .5power/mana to the board, turn 3, only 1-1.5pwr/mana etc.
If the opponent doesn't have removal youre probably against a deck you needs to race and kill by turn 3/4.
if they have removal, youre looking to kill by turn 5-6, and the anthem suffers as well. Likely on average only adding 1.5 dmg per mana spent.
What do you think about the new spoiled card “Old-growth troll” ?
It could replace steel leaf champions in 3 cmc slot?
Steel leaf is more true to the core strategy of the deck, getting your opponent dead.
also the 5 power lets you actually kill an opposing reality smasher. this was huge upgrade about it vs Baloth.
I don't think it's good enough for our deck, but what do people think of Smell Fear?
It pumps every creature that already has a counter on it, can even put a level counter on Hexdrinker, and counts as removal.
The obvious downsides are the 2 mana, the sorcery speed, and it doesn't pump creatures without counters on them, but I still thought I'd put it out there since its the closest card we can use from MH2.
Edit: Maybe Endurance can be good enough to use as gravehate instead of/alongside of Scavenging Ooze, but I don't know if we need that kind of hate.
Scavenging Ooze is sadly better. It stops a lot of things, so instead of us having to react with Endurance, we can let the opponent sweat when we have 1-3 mana up for ooze.
So I've made 3 changes to my deck
1. Adding 2 Skylasher to my mainboard to fill out my deck, I think this is super strong in the meta right now.
This guy stops
Delver of Secrets
Any U Planeswalker
Mantis Rider
Sprite Dragon
Tasigur
Geist of Saint Taff
Reflector Mage
And that's just on the ground.
2. Adding two Weather the Storm to my sideboard in replace of my two Old-Growth Troll. This is just because the burn matchup/storm matchup I had no real advantage over outside Damping Sphere, so adding some more utility really helps.
3. Adding two Apostle's Blessing to replace my two Kitchen Finks. With Urzas Saga on the rise, being able to charge right through their army of golems, dodge removal, or block big guys to then counter swing is huge in my deck since I don't run a ton of combat tricks.
That said, I think Smell Fear is interesting and worth testing.

T1: Experiment One or Pelt Collector
T2: Strangleroot Geist / Barkhide Troll / Avatar of the Resolute
T3: Experiment One or Pelt Collector or nothing. Go to combat, then flash in Briarhorn to evolve EO/PC, give something +3/+3, and then maybe throw an Aspect of Hydra down for a total of 12-13 damage.
