Its not a bad card by any means and could be a really good alternate card, but I see the cant be chumped by 2/2 tokens/creatures as more threat. It could overall be a meta card depending on what is in your area since as you say it does replace itself after a point and the mana ramp could be relevant.
It can’t be chumped because it has trample, yeah probably meta depending but imho a 4/4 trample that replace itself ( and create mana ramp ) is better than a 5/4 pseudo unblockable
i think its comes down to how much pump your decks running, if your is running more pump spells and ram through then I can see the troll as the stronger option, if your more all in on 1 cmc body's and and savage swipe then I can see steel leaf being the stronger choice.
I feel like the most important aspect of this card (aside from the board wipe proof nature that makes it playable) is the native trample, which makes ram through a lot more effective.
this fact also provides a viable alternative to combat damage as a win con, which the deck needs against a cryptic/scatuary locks and titan shift field of the dead. its fringe but a possible sb tactic for the deck, especially if you can get them down to the 6-7 life range by then end of turn 3. the decks lacked options before now against this prominent possibility. so will probably need testing to see if this is a viable option.

in terms of being chumped, small tokens could band token to block and kill it. So its not totally clear that trample is better than daunt in combat. But as mentioned above, trample also offers some other potential benefits like Ram Through.
Choose target creature that you control and target creature you dont control. If you control 3 or more snow permanents, the creature you control gains +1/+0 and indestructible until end of turn. Then the creatures fight.
This one is awesome. It should be no challenge for us to play snow basics. Which makes this pretty viable.

it is good and compete with savege swipe
Worst case scenario, they are the same, 1 mana sorcery fight spell
best case scebario, savage swipe gives +2/+2 and this gives +1/+0 indostructible.
I still think savege swipe is better but need test for sure
The big issue is that its a self defeating card advantage engine. Shapers' Sanctuary works cause its cheap and a enchantment. Meaning that unless the removal player has a way to get rid of enchantments its a pretty safe card. Its not the best SB card but in removal heavy metagames it at least can sneak in early and provide card advantage. The Mammoth being 5cc and having that stapled on even with foretell isn't as good since it only takes one type of removal to get rid of your mammoth then they keep on removing without giving you any advantage.
That and even with the foretell cost its 6cc over 2 turns and we have many better things to play in the 2nd-4th turns.
Its good and would definitely work well in this deck but what would we replace?
is definitely good 4 sure, for his effect is similar to vines of vastwood, so it should replace it but i'm not sure if is the right choice
yes the +1/+1 counter is nice and has good synergy with avatar of the resolute and maybe other cards but pay GG for +4/+4 and hexproof until the end of the turn is just better
Hello all,
I've played Stompy in modern on and off since 2013 and last night I took 2nd going 3-1 in a 12 person tourney. Decklist at the bottom of this post.
Round 1 vs. Naya Stone Blade 2-1
Lost the 2nd game due to keeping a 1 lander and not finding a 2nd land until turn 4, turns out you still can't do that in modern...
Strangleroot Geist and Rancor were great against all the the bolts and helixes. Vines of Vastwood stopped a Sword of Fire and Ice equipping that would have been incredibly problematic.
Round 2 vs. Jund 2-0
This match felt surprisingly easy. Dismembered a Goyf and then killed a Wren and Six at 4 loyalty with a Strangleroot Geist wearing a Rancor on turn 3. Opponent was a tad slow and apparently curving out is still good enough sometimes. Drayd Militant helped keep Goyf down in size and got in for like 6 damage by herself.
Round 3 vs. Oops all spells (the self mill with Creeping Chills and Vengvine version) 0-2
Honestly this matchup was rough, they comboed out turn 3 on the play in game 1 and repeated that on the draw in game 2. All I had to bring in was a single Tormod's Crypt and a Relic of Progenitus so that didn't help much. Due to that matchup I'm considering adding either a full set of Tormod's Crypts or a set of Leyline of the Void to the sideboard.
Round 4 vs. Eldrazi Tron 2-1
Curved out game 1 and sprinted to the finish line. Kept a 2 lander game 2 in which the opponent dropped a pair of Reality Smashers on me far too quickly.
Game 3 involved a Chalice of the Void on 1 which I was able to play around and got through off the back of Collector Ouphe, Strangleroot Geist, and a Hexdrinker from turn 1 that leveled all the way up to 8.
Decklist
4 Dryad Militant
4 Experiment One
2 Hexdrinker
4 Strangleroot Geist
4 Avatar of the Resolute
2 Scavenging Ooze
2 Barkhide Troll
4 Steel Leaf Champion
1 Rhonas, the Indomitable
3 Rancor
4 Vines of Vastwood
2 Dismember
3 Aspect of Hydra
Thanks for the congratz, I'll probably play it again in 2 weeks and I'll try to take notes for a more detailed match report. I did bring Questing beast in a few times in removal heavy matchups like Jund and Stoneblade because I tend to trim pump spells in those matchups and I like having more threats in what will probably be a grindier game. It's in the board mostly for control and planeswalker heavy lists.
My utility land spread is a bit random and honestly the single treetop was because it was the only one I could find when putting the list backtogether. I think I have another one in my cube but didn't feel like digging it out. I'll probably go to 2 whenever I get around to ordering the Urza Legacy foils. I have a set of peatlands but I've been on the fence about adding more due to a few BlueMoon and Ponza players in the play group. I did have an interaction against Eldrazi Tron where Peatland was my only untapped land and I used it to pay the colorless on Dismember targeting a reality smasher. 5 life and a card from the hand was quite the cost but I won the game so I guess it was correct? Years and years ago I had a similar moment dismembering an Eidolon of the Great Revel and won that game as well. Just Stompy things I suppose.
dismembering a smasher with peatland mana, and dismembering an eidolon - some high risk plays, but I guess you were faster in dealing the last points of damage. Goodluck on your next tournament.

good use of Dryad against Jund.
one question, did you bring in Questing Beast in any of the games? And was it relevant when you brought it in?

Is there a reason you run 1 Treetop and 1 Oasis and only 2 Peatlands?
