Hey, sorry for crashing this party but maybe someone can help me out.
I'm currently building humans and trading the last pieces together. My problem are the last 5 cards but I cant wait to test the deck.
What would you substitute for the following cards:
2x Horizon Canopy
3x Cavern of Souls
First of all I know how good those cards are and I know they're the back of the deck but I think it will be ok for testting and smaller FNM.
I would play 2x Razorverge Thicket for the Canopies. But what for the Cavern? 3x City of Brass or maybe 2 shocklands 1 fetch?
Thank you!

I would go City of Brass / Mana Confluence. If you go the fetch route, you'll have trouble casting your Mantis, Sin Cows and Statigirls. And it should waste you less money to get crappy rainbow lands.
Best option is to borrow Caverns / Confluences for the time being, so maybe spend time making friends in stores.

How do you guys go about labeling Meddling Mages and Phantasmal Images? Little scraps of paper seems annoying and cumbersome but I can't think of a better option.

If you don't need to keep your notes from one game to the next, a boogie board is really good for this. You can write life/card names and then just erase it for the next game. If you would like to take notes, then a notepad probably works better.
Just to come back to Tajic. Since Dredge will see a ton of play, Tajic is actually a good counter-measure vs Conflagrate.
It's also good to notice Auriok Champion is an all-star in the MU, so it's even better now than it was when Dredge was out of flavour.

Selfless spirit pretty much is a good counter-measure against Conflagrate.
Tajic is probably better with the aggro strat and is actually a human, but selfless spirit being a flyer is also fairly significant.
Main difference is that Selfless Spirit defends against a lot of other board wiping cards as well such as damnation, verdict, wrath, doj, etc. and non exile or -/- spot removals which Tajic can't defend either anyways.
On a different note, I'd like to ask about my recent experience with Knight of Autumn. Anyone else experienced a rough time casting this card out of the sideboard?
It must be especially hard to cast along with Auriok Champ VS Burn. Any Territory / Cavern becomes a headache to figure out. I guess it's easier VS Artifact decks since Kataki also requires white, and Noble Hierarch tends to survive more often than VS Burn.
Overall, it's the same as Gaddock or Qasali, and if you run basic Island over Coast #2, oh well...

I haven't had any issues casting KoA, yet. But to be fair, I have been holding them like a trick most of the time, waiting for a truly impactful moment to deploy it. By that time I usually have a vial and/or Zigg/Noble/Basic in play.
I see, thank you for the insight. I guess I am overreacting with KoA casting based off of about a 6 game sample size of post board play lol.
Can you guys suggest of any fantastic twitch 5c humans streamer please? Thanks in advance.
2 Auriok Champion is ok against Elves, great against Burn.
2 Knight of Autumn is likely the stapled number as well.
1-2 Selfless Spirit should be in your SB anyway.
So far, it's a very standard SB.
Prowler is likely to do nothing VS Elves if you don't have it in your opener. Their lords and numbers will be too much.
Izzet Staticaster #3 in your SB maybe ?
In your MD you probably want 4 Reflector Mage, it's necessary VS Burn and Elves, and sometimes it helps VS Primetime.

Hey folks!
Finally I finished the deck *SPOILER: NOT REALLY*! Traded some stuff for the missing Cavern of Souls and now I'm on the humans-train (better later than never).
The only thing missing are 2x Horizon Canopy. I'll get my hands on my third copy this week. For now I played 2x Razorverge Thicket which were ok but not great.
My overall record is 11-5. Not much but I'm starting to get a feeling.
Some things I want to point out:
-Reflector Mage is king! In my meta the 4th copy in the main is really strong.
-Militia Bugler is also a good card! I started to playtest with 2x Thalia, Heretic Cathar. She was good but did nothing sometimes. I prefer Bugler in grindy matchup as I tend to be low on gas.
-Meddling Mage is a tough magiccard.
-Sequencing: I often struggle which one drop is the best. For me it's safe to play T1 Aether Vial. The choice between Champion of the Parish and Noble Hierarch is often pro Hierarch. I think it's better to lose the Dork if you have enough mana in your hand then your threat.
-Sideboard: I made a SB-Guide based on Ondrej Straskys tips in his blog. It helps a lot. Sometimes I still overboard. Especially with Whirler Rogue. Not sure in which matchups it's the best card.
-Playing with Aether Vial... I'm a aggro guy. Slam my stuff and win (or die). Things like holding priority, faking a vial activation, ticking the right sweet spot are all the things I have to learn... the important thing for me is to play steady and dont rush my turn.
Humans is tougher to play than most think. Even keeping tracks of +1/+1 counters take players by surprise !
About Whirler Rogue, it seems to be interesting VS UWx and BGx, since you get 3 bodies with one card. It's also very good in the mirror, since you probably want to cut a ton of cards (Thalia, FreeB and Med Mage).

It has been some time for me to play the deck, but i've noticed most list havn't really changed much over the last few weeks. Which is good!
Also, the top 8 of SCG Las Vegas had Humans at 1st and 3rd place in the modern classic! Awesome job.
I'd like to respond to something said in bold here:

T1 Vial is usually the right choise. But between Champion and Hierarch there are exceptions.
When facing a non interactive deck with little to no removal, putting down the fastest clock you can is the thing you want to be doing. Given the choise between Champion and Hiararch, If you can start with T1 Hiërarch into T2 Mantis Rider into anything pumpy or disruptive, thats the line you want.
If not: I usually go with T1 Champion into T2 anything that gives an attack for 3 or more. This includes playing Hiërarch and attack with exalted. Obviously there are (More mana efficient) variants on this line, but if there is the slightest chance your Champion lives until T3, you're putting on the preassure.
Immagine topdecking T3 Lieutennant and follow it up with Image for instance.
Only writing down these lines makes me want to play the deck again The sequencing is just so intriguing.

Adding to what SmauG said -
* in general, you want to play vial on 1 as the longer the game goes the worse it is. There's corner cases (like the one SmauG mentions about needing to race) where you wouldn't do this. Its tough to give an "always do X" rule about anything.
* The same goes for just having a choice btwn Champion and Hierarch. It really comes down to what else you have in your hand (how many lands? do you have a great 3 drop that you want to play in this match on 2?). All else equal, I tend to play hierarch first for the same type of reason as vial - Humans is best when it can be explosive and be playing 2 spells per turn. If youre running Buglers then this becomes even more critical as it is a very slow card if you can't Bugle and then play the card you choose right away.
Especially with Whirler Rogue. Not sure in which matchups it's the best card.
In general I bring in Whirler Rogue for matches where I have too many bad cards I need to pull and need to just get to 60 in the main, or I need to have a bit more defense (especially flying), or have to grind, or need to force through board stalls.
Examples:
* Humans Mirror (remember that you can target *their phantasmal image* with the Rogues ability and kill it, in addition to pushing through blockers)
* Dredge
* Spirits
* BGx and UWx midrange piles
* Hollow One
* Infect
* Affinity
* Shadow

Get in the habit of activating the vial and giving your opponent the chance to respond to the activation on the stack before putting the creature in play. You don't want to reveal what your choice will be until you have to, so make sure to give the opp a chance to make a bad play, especially if you're looking to vial in a meddling mage.
The sweet spot will depend on the match and card in your 75 that are most powerful in that match, but I would say most times I get it to 2 and leave it there, mana concerns and getting a ton of 3 drops in hand aside.
Get in the habit of activating the vial and giving your opponent the chance to respond to the activation on the stack before putting the creature in play.
I want to second this comment, not revealing your Vial creature before the trigger resolves is extremely important.
It can also be fun to occasionally dummy-activate Vial, without intending to play a creature, just to keep opponents on their toes, if you have the breathing room to do this or want to force a play before you untap.
ticking the right sweet spot are all the things I have to learn... the important thing for me is to play steady and don't rush my turn.
Also, remember that you can also respond to the Vial's triggered ability with it on the stack during your upkeep. Some tricks with that include:
Vial has 1 counter on it and you have a one drop and a three drop in hand, you can vial in your one drop during upkeep and then increase the counter.
If you have a Horizon Canopy in play and you're not sure if you should increase or leave the counters where they are, you can pop the canopy with the trigger on the stack to get more information from the drawn card about which line to take.
Riders in the SB are pretty narrow as they will answer the Spirit MU only. While 5 decks will play wrath effects... You should probably add another Selfless Spirit on top of the one you already play. I'd play Whirler Rogue in order to race Spirits as well, which means your SB will have more flyers overall for VS Spirits. Maybe a second Rogue instead of the 2nd Selfless.
In the main, I'm not sure how impactful Malcontents will be, and the deck usually run all 4 Images. I'd go that way because Images are proven staples nowadays.
It's obvious you prepared well for your meta overall, good luck !

Agree with headminerves comments. Especially regarding the additional selfless spirit.... a lot of the decks you’re expecting to face will have sweepers. What’s your thinking behind kambal, consul of allocation? I’ve found the card pretty lacklustre and would opt for another direfleet daredevil or sin collector. Is the decks you listed the entire field? If not, I would think about izzet Staticaster to handle a number of decks that can go wider
In regards to the main board, I dropped kessig malcontents a long time ago and haven’t really looked back. However, if you’re having success with it, then go for it! I’ve really liked x4 reflector Mage and x4 phantasmal image.
Good luck though - let us know how you get on!
