SCG Philadelphia had Humans take #1 in the Classic and another take a place in the Top 8 Team Constructed. The biggest defining thing is the reduction of MB Kitesail Freebooter and increase of MB Kessig Malcontents. I like this move for the competitive meta as hard control and fast aggro decks have pushed combo decks down. They haven't removed Kitesail FB, but moved it to the SB or gone for a split. The other big addition to the MB is Thraben Inspector, which gives more 1 drops (also good for Vial on 1 counter, which I found I didn't have a lot of creatures to bring in with) it also leaves a Clue, which is good against grindy control and we are always looking for more card draw.
I have a copy on the way too. To me it's the strongest of the new humans. Also, it's really nice it works around our own Grafdigger's Cage, which I always board in against snapcaster decks.
Cage still stops it so I don’t know what you mean?
Cage doesn't stop Daredevil.
His trigger exiles the card from opp's graveyard before letting you cast it.
I see what you’re saying. I was thinking because it’s out of opponents gy and it didn’t matter. I know people love the mana base currently but I wonder if we can add more white sources for alesha, who smiles at death? Maybe cut 2 unclaimed for 2 more coasts?
With this meta shift and ppl cutting on Freebooters, what about going back to Mayors and play more aggressively? We would have 12 lords (8 lords + 4 Images) and we could have 1~2 Malcontents for reach. With this many lords, we can apply lots of pressure early and finish the game with Malcontents. It could also help to outgrow damage based removal on our creatures if you have a draw with lots of lords/images.

I think you would then run into the problem of not having enough disruption for the control decks. Our lords just aren't as good as Merfolk's lords. I think moving Freebooter to the SB or reducing the MB # is about as far as I would go for lighting up on the Non-creature disruption, anymore and I think you will be too slow and vulnerable to boardwipes.

That's where I would begin. -4 Freebooter, +4 Mayor with Freebooters on the SB

What is "this" meta shift you are talking about? Care to elborate?
FreeB gets worse now Humans is popular, it means more mirror matches. Since Humans play little to no creature interaction, Malcontents, Inspectors or Mayors can win G1 there.
The card is not great VS Dredge & Merfolk, but quite the staple against the rest of the format, especially control decks that prey on Humans.
I see no metagame shift so to speak, but just a trend towards the Human deck right now, enough so it deserves a MD adjustment to win the mirror more easily. Since Reflector Mage can be awkward in the mirror, it's not the right card you want to increase up to 4 copies (if you do it's still not enough, that's why players had to find sthg else). Instead you add cards that are good in the mirror AND the control MUs in G1.
I don't think the main takeaway from this weekend's results is the increase in Malcontents, or the sideboarding of Freebooter but rather the inclusion of Thraben Inspector!
I do wonder if the inclusion of more one drops increases the average damage of Malcontents?
How necessary are people finding horizon canopy? I'm hesitant to spend the money (since I just bought nobles) but I'd like to hear opinions on how you feel they push games.

At least 2 is vital. I'm going up to 4 as soon as my Seachrome Coasts come in the mail but in a deck without any real card draw (Thraben Inspector may not be the future for this archtype), being able to turn extra land drops into extra cards is fantastic. You don't need all four, I've been successful in the past (successful enough to pay for these next two Canopies as well as other things) on this landbase: 4 Cavern, 4 Territory, 4 Ziggurat, 2 Horizon Canopy, 2 Flooded Strand, 1 Temple Garden, 1 Hallowed Fountain, 1 Plains.
But not running any at all is almost certainly wrong.
Fetches do give you the ability to diversify your color support more. I've considered Godless Shrine over Hallowed Fountain but I haven't actually tested it. Maybe in a meta where Reflector Mage is dead and we want Sin Collectors mainboard?

I went 4-5 on a very stock list in the Classic at Philly. Had a tough go at it, saw a lot of matchups our deck isn't favored against, but I can't really complain considering a Humans deck won the event. Won some of those bad matchups too because this deck just sometimes gets to do that, which is nice. Can write up a report if anyone's interested.

4x Horizon Canopy is very good--the deck can run out of gas and turning flood into draw is how you want it to work. Get the others if you're committing to the deck.
Just went 4-0 at a local LGS, played against mardu pyro, burn, grixis control, jeskai control.
Canopy's are definitely a must. Like others have said, if you're committed to this deck get 4. it provides so much draw when needed. This deck makes 360 turns so quick when it looks like you're about to lose. I literally couldve lost 3 of my mathces due to inexeperienced piloting , but the deck covers my flaws i end up coming with the win.
Honestly, a good way to get EXP is watch TONS of jonathan Rossum and other pilots play the deck, each pilot offers unique lines to the deck, that it makes it so much fun to master!
losses against Valakut Bring to Light, to much removal and getting Anger with Bring to Light, 2 times a game.:(
and Small Zoo, too fast.
what is the sideboard plan against these decks?
There's no SB plan for Zoo cause it's a fringe deck for now. The aggro starts are best though, Champ, Lieut, Mantis. We play the control side here (thanks to our creatures, as weird as it sounds), so we trade as much as we can. In a sense it's close to the Burn MU, where it can be tough to figure out the right moment where you must turn the corner and start racing, especially on the draw.
For Valakut, the aggro start with a little bit of interaction is the plan. Try to get your guys out of Lightning Bolt range. You can also try to assemble a very disruptive battlefield, but it's worse than racing.

I played vs zoo this week - just bring in as much removal as you can and replace your meddling mages and fun-of three drop with anafenza. V
I played vs titanshift this week but I don't think we have a great match up there. I might switch back to fiend hunters if this stays prevalent (over dismembers). I did bring in kambal in this match up and he was pretty solid. Making every ramp spell a drain 2 definitely helped race and increased the number of lands they needed for a lethal shift.
Horizon Canopy is absolutely essential, especially since we use aether vial and in longer games no longer require Mana to play creatures. It can literally be the difference between losing and winning.
On a further note I'm absolutely loving kessig malcontents in what was my Bob slot. Instead of drawing extra cards while losing life I simply play him for the win (or play then copy and win). He often hits for 5, 6, 7 damage.
So speaking about enchantments. Is rec sage the best we can do for them?
How has dire fleet been treating people now that the dust had settled? I have two in sideboard but haven't pulled them yet (though I wished I had). I figure the dream is to aether in targeting something snap targets and cast it yourself. The ultimate zinger.
what do you guys think of taking out vithian renegades completely in sb, to make room for better wider sb tech? its main use is against affinity, but i feel like we go a little taller and wider than them so we can overwhelm them. the other possible sb use for the renegades is etron variants, but i feel like 3 cmc is too slow against them. it does take out o stone...but im thinking we ccan just outrace them?
Hi all. I am going to take my basically "standard issue" Humans deck to FNM for the first time tonight. I just need to iron out my sideboard and I should be good. I saw some interesting variation of the deck in the coverage today. We'll see how this goes and how it evolves over time.
