What sort of grave hate would you play in a situation like that? I assume there will be a lot of graveyard abusing decks, and Scooze might not be enough at all. Would you go for Leyline of the Void (which may not be castable if you topdeck it) or for some artifacts or Surgical Extraction?
Hello guys, I'm pretty new to this forum and I would like to hear some of your opinions.
I just recently bought into GB elves in paper, I'm currently only missing Caverns and I play just one Canopy.
But what I wanted to discuss is that I heard and saw Jeff Hoogland piloting the deck and advocating playing additional 4 dorks(Deep Shadow) in the place of Nettles, saying that Nettle is a "win more card" and that Shadow allows for more keepable hands. Yet I find Nettle better than ever mainly thanks to the new Clancaller lord effect, because Nettle has a bigger body. So what is your opinion on that? Maybe it was already discussed here and I missed it. Also excuse my english.
Edit: I play 3 nettle/1 Shadow split as of now, dunno if that isn't hurting the otherwise streamlined deck s bit.
I ran a list close to VIPOwl's PPTQ winning list at my FNM - 20 players.
Round 1 vs. Zoo. I keep on 1 land. I lose creatures to Lightning Bolt and double Lightning Helix. A Goyf and Wild Nacatl eat my life total and I don't draw a 2nd land in time and then a 3rd land in time. In the next game, it is close, but I get out a bunch of creatures as I dodge removal for 3 straight turns. I end up getting lethal through many Scavenging Ooze activations. Got all 4 Elvish Clancaller out this game. He mulls to 5 and I hit a Shaman of the Pack into transform Westvale Abbey on the same turn for lethal. I took out the Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx for a Westvale Abbey before the tournament because I felt this one would be more useful. 2-1.
Round 2 vs. Hollow Bois. He gets some bad discards and has a pretty slow hand. I am able to build through some mana screw and get too much of a board. Game 2 is similar, as he Bolts a Scavenging Ooze, but then I get a bunch of Lords out. Pretty easy match. 2-0.
Round 3 vs. URw Delver. Bolt into Bolt, then Vendilion Clique, then Snap/Bolt. Helix and Snap/Helix and double Delver. This one isn't too close as I kept another 6 card 1 lander and struggled after mana dorks died. The next game is similar, but a bit less burn. I get out Westvale Abbey after he played Reflector Mage on my Elvish Archdruid. If I sacrifice all my creatures, I win if he doesn't have another Reflector Mage. I try to play around that, but he drew 3 burn spells straight and I assumed if he had, he would have Bolted my board off Westvale flipping, but I lose because I didn't flip it. Turns out he didn't have a 2nd Reflector Mage of course. 0-2.
Round 4 vs. Humans. Not much to say here. My friend was paired up and I loaned him Humans. After a rough 1-2 night, he did not want to even play (for fun) against Elves. I don't blame him. 2-0.
I finish 3-1 with some solid matchups.

Nettle Sentinel got even crazier with Clancaller. Dont think Deep Shadow Elves are that much needed unless you play mostly black SB (Thoughtseizes, Leylines, Pushes) but then you are dilluting the aggro creature deck too much with noncreature spells.
Round 1 vs. UW Spirits. I have the nut hand on the draw and there's literally nothing he can do. Shaman of the Pack him low and swing for lethal. In the following game, he started off solidly, but literally drew 6 lands in a row and I crept back and swung for lethal. 2-0.
Round 2 vs. UR Thing/Ascension. He played turn 1 Bolt. But then he had no more until it was too late. In the next game, 4 Lightning Bolt and 2 Anger of the Gods give him time to get counters on Pyromancer Ascension and then Thing in the Ice gets me. In the last game, he plays Hallowed Fountain and Island. I don't know if he sandbagged Scalding Tarn, but it looks like he drew it off the top to play it for Manamorphose into double Red into Anger of the Gods. I do Lead the Stampede to get 4 creatures. He does Anger of the Gods a few turns later and gets 2 Things while an Ascension is killed by Rec Sage. 2 more Lightning Bolt in this one as well. At least it wasn't 4! 1-2.
Round 3 vs. UR Delver. He doesn't play enough burn and I nut draw him. In the next game, it is close. A buuuuunch of burn, but not much pressure and eventually some Companies and Lead the Stampede get me there. 2-0.
Round 4 vs. Uw Tron. I end up playing against some UR deck that stabilizes and his draws are much better than mine. By game 2, the players on our left realize that I'm playing against the wrong Matthew. So, we wasted around 15 min. minimum. On to the right player! Turn 3 Supreme Verdict off Signet. I do Lead the Stampede for 4 creatures, but he eventually gets there in the long game with Iona, Shield of Emeria on Green. In the next game, I go off on the play with a nut draw to kill him soon. In the last game, I got him low. He did some sweepers, but Scavenging Ooze went unchecked and wrecked his Gifts Ungiven piles. He ends up casting Iona, Shield of Emeria on turn 2 of turns. He can't swing me to lethal on his turn, so he passes. I offer him the prize split since 2-1-1 doesn't get a thing. He accepts. 1-1-1, but 1-2.
So, I would have been 2-1-1. But I went 2-2 instead.

I use Nissa, Vital Force. I won several games with it, but it is not necessary. I use it because 1) I have a foil one and I love it, 2) flavor and 3) it is good vs control/grindy matchups if it is drawn. I don’t think its something that is a silver bullet for this deck, but I have played this deck for a long time to know that one sideboard card I insert because I love it won’t ruin my chances for winning a tournament
I play the "stock" GB list with clancallers and stuff. I play 1x nykthos and without canopies.
My two questions are... Is it worth it to play Westvale Abbey and something like Akroma's Memorial to have win-able games against decks like UR Wizards and things that fly? Or is it generally unfavoured matchup no matter what i do?
I generally only run 1 colorless land, and usually as a 19th land. T1 green is so important to the deck and 1 land hands are common.
Westvale seems slam dunk amazing against a deck like wizards but a card like vapor snag can just outright ruin you. unsubstantiate, cryptic command, path, lotv, etc are all great answers to the abbey. I love abbey, but it's not as bullet proof as it seems at first blush.
Memorial doesn't do enough on its own to justify imho. It requires beef to make it decent and our deck has to dodge sweepers and removal on key pieces well before it comes online. If you're winning with memorial, chances are you were winning before it.
In other news, price of gilt-leaf palace has been bonkers. It's a pretty specific card, so baring a supplemental set (we had a commander precon for elves and two duel decks already so it's not known how likely that'll be) it'll keep creeping up until we get an elf tribal set that supports GB and a reprint. May be better to move if you've been waiting.
Budget options are unclaimed territory, llanorwar wastes, blooming marsh, overgrown tomb, and woodland cemetery. All but the cemetery can produce green T1, which is critical. Marsh can come down tapped post t3 if you flood and keep you off coco/chord mana needed potentially. Territory makes it harder to cast black spells out of the side. Tomb/wastes hurt. They all have a draw back.
None of these really offer as much as the palace imho - the closest analog being marsh probably as they generally come in tapped around the same time if you dump your hand prior to land drop.
I end 2-2 in a local store this Sunday.I used standard GB list with lead instead of chords and 2x throne of pharaoh.
I win easily with UW Control. G1, a turn one cavern allowed me to dodge his counter and G2 he did not see any wrath.
Lose bad with aura hexproof. He grow too big and too fast and lifelink is painful. G2 I did swing for 42 dmg but there was not enough.
Lose a grindy match with G tron. Won fast g1 and lose fast G2. G3 I was really close but and empty lead avoid me to win since the next turn he cast ugin.
In the last match I won a mirror match. Oppo played the same list of mine with the exception that I had thrones. It was the mvp of both games allowing many extra dmgs to won the race.
I went with my best friend an of course we got paired in Round one against each other.
Most of the time it feels like 50:50 matchup.
This time I got really lucky, both games I got the early pressure rolling and he couldn´t find his removal in time. ( three maindeck terminus)
Side board for game 2 :
- 3 Visionary
- 2 Nettle Sentinel
+ 2 rec sage
+ 2 Ooze
+ 1 Relic
Match 2 :
RG Good Stuff 2:0
I keep a one lander with Cavern and 3 dorks in the dark. He bolts my first and second Dork. I don´t find my second land and he lands a blood moon on turn 3.
I find a nettle sentinel, he plays rabblemaster the next turn.
I keep blicking his 1/1s until i land a heritage druid and casting two Companys the folloing turns and a final swing for 40 seals game one.
sideboard:
- 2 nettle sentinel
- 1 lead the stampede
- 2 elvish visionary
+ 2 rec sage
+ 2 heroic intervention
+ 1 elvish champion
Game two I kept a pretty decent hand with archdruid on t2 into company turn 3.
he opens with hierarch into goyf. his follow ups (hazoret and sarkhan fireblood) aren´t good enough to stop my army of 2/2s and a shaman of the pack for 8 seals the deal.
Match 3 :
Storm 1:2
Probably our worst matchup I´d say.
Game one I mull to 5 and kept Dork , archdruid , company , land , land.
Since I was on the play, I open up with my dork, who survives. Turn 2 into Archdruid , who also survies, Turn 3 I play a heritage druid and pass with company up. My opponent tells me that he needs one peace to combo off but does not find it in his draw step. Company finds two Elite, I untap, draw ezuri and the rest is history.
I am still unsure how to side against storm so I decide to keep my thoughseize in the board.
- 3 lead the stampede
- 2 visionarys
+ 2 Damping Sphere
+ 1 relic
+ 2 essence warden
Game 2 was very weird. He kills all my first drops, with bold and abrade. A lot of the time draw, go, kill your guy, go. Until about turn 12 or 13 he topdecks past in flames and burns me out.
I decide to not change my board plan.
I keep a very fast hand with dorks shaman and two archdruids and prepare for a turn 4 kill.
Sadly he opens with a turn 2 baral into the turn three combo.
Match 4
UWR As foretold, Restore Balance 2:1
To keep it short, 3 maindeck Pyroclasms are backbreaking if you don´t know about them.
Game one I dump my hand on turn 2, he cleans it with a turn 2 Clasm. Jace and as foretold into restore Balance grind me into the ground.
Without any lands, creatures and only one card in hand I give it up and we go two game two.
Games two and three went pretty similar. He does not find his removal for my dorks and both games a swing + overrun with Ezuri seals the deal for me.
Short wrapup:
The deck felt very solid. Game two against storm was a coinflip. If I find a company from the top before he finds his past in flames I problably win the game.
Two canopies main felt so right, I highly recommend playing those. I did not miss Clancaller at any time in the games.
I might make some small sideboard adjustments, but I will let you know.
Ya, I’m trying to evaluate that new glimpse. Four mana is a lot, like coco level, but going back to a chord deck and having the glimpse as a one of to Chord, I tap and go nuts might be a thing. If not, I can only see this replacing the coco slot as having 8 4 drops seems a bit much. I’ll test this though as I tested all other potential cards. Might be a thing.
What would you run in your sideboard for GP Prague this week, considering grave decks are running rampant everywhere?
I am planning to play exact same maindeck (maybe Westvale Abey instead of Nykthos, as I really liked to have it vs removal decks).
I know I want following:
2 Shapers
2 Finks
3+ Damping Sphere
1 Dismember
2 Rec Sage
4 llanowar
4 elvish mystic
4 heritage
4 shaman
4 dwynen elite
3 nettle sentinel
2 ezuri
4 chord
4 collected
1 visionary
4 clan caller
1 shalai
4 archdruid
Or move 2 steel leaf replaced visionry and shalai
Lands
4 unclaimed territory
4 razorverge thicket
1 westvaley abbry
2 temple forest
6 forest
Side use white tool box

I was wondering, with your list, how do you approach the Humans match up? They always seem to have everything exactly the time they need it.
This card its really slow.... Elves needs coco or lead or chord..... I see this card really works in commander elves
You have to Take aggressive mulligans against Humans. If you don´t se a turn one Dork witha follow up. Shuffle your cards back in.
My sideboard plan is to get rid of my Leads and some visionarys and add revoker, rec sages and the elvish champion.
With the GB list you are attacking from many different angles, that they "ussually" can not disrupt you enough with Freebooter and Meddling mage.
