I don't care if some card gets a reprint, this is not a standard subforum where that matters; we need new, exciting fish to play in Modern and beyond.
That said, I am 100% sure we are going to get ridiculous monogreen merfolk, just to screw with us.
When you think about it - I dont think we really necessarily need any specific merfolk upgrades for the deck. Sure if something is printed that is strictly better like a Cursecatcher that has extra text or something like TNN - that would be great - but also unrealistic.
However, we might get more cards like a Kopola - which I think on balance is not as good as Kira but may still be a good choice depending on meta fluctuations. The best upgrade for competitive Merfolk is more likely going to be cards like Copter and Ceremonious Rejection. However, part of me hopes we get something broken - still lots of cards to be spoiled in Ixalan and then the follow up Rivals of Ixalan.
In regards to reprints - that will likely happen in the duel decks bix set - goblins vs merfolk.
In regards to green merfolk - this is standard only - UG merfolk will never be comp in non-rotating formats similarly to the failed UW merfolk archetype. With the caveat that no super broken cards are printed in like a 1UG TNN or something of simialr power
I know it wont be good and i am in the minority, but there is a good chance i will at least TRY UG since its my favorite color combination.
Fully prepared for failure.
I've been playing UG lately for my fish and I think it'll suprise you. It's actually a pretty fun deck.
Im actually curious if by the end of the block we will have a UG merfolk deck whose core is more of a standalone deck as opposed to a merfolk deck; cousins as opposed to siblings if you will. But that's speculation we should keep off of the thread.
I agree so far nothing but Kopala has any chance of being moved into our decks as they stand now, and i am sort of leaning towards the train of thought that Kopala's synergy coupled with early game protection may win out ovrr Kira. I'd still want Kira in the side, but its so cramped...
I'm waiting to see a solid white Merfolk creature. Maybe a WU Queller for Merfolk? Something to make Wanderwine Hub useful like how elves got Shaman of the Pack.
New guy to this deck. Zero experience apart from playing against it.
Today, picked up the cards on a whim with some money from a commission (playset of altered valakuts if anyone's curious). Merfolk was pretty much the only modern deck I hadn't yet built.
So I've got this new deck and I have questions.
1) Copter. Necessary, or quirky choice? Seen it around quite a bit but not in every list.
2) reejerey; 3 or 4? I'm currently on 3 purely because I've seen it as a 3-of before. Willing to be shown different.
3) cavern of souls; seen this as a one-of but I always (presumably incorrectly?) thought the deck ran a full playset of caverns. Am I missing something?
Finally, shout out to all the merfolk players who crushed me over the years. I've often played decks that are soft to merfolk for one reason or another, so it's been a tricky deck to face. Today, my curiosity got the better of me and I decided I needed to play the deck to understand it a bit better.
Cheers!

1) Copter is very much a flex slot as far as i'm concerned. It has a place but is by no means a staple piece. feel free to try with and without it.
2) i prefer 3 reejereys but have also run the full playset before. they are insane in multiples so 4 is not a mistake as long as you keep your curve in mind. we don't want too many 3 drops so if you want 4 then you might consider cutting a maindeck kira or moving her to the side. i find her very useful in the maindeck in the current meta so i'm playing her with 3 reejereys.
3) Cavern of souls is a useful card in some matchups but is a liability. having too much brown mana can bite you if you can't cast blue spells. the more caverns you play the more often you will find yourself with a hand that can't make U for a spreading seas or a counterspell. it sucks to have a dispelor something rot in your hand because you have cavern, cavern, mutavault. we have vials to dodge counters already. 1 or 2 caverns is ok. you will start to notice it's a problem if you play more.

Oracle Text When Sentinel Totem enters the battlefield, scry 1.
t, Exile Sentinel Totem: Exile all cards from graveyards.
What do you guys think of this card?
I think, to begin with, a 'free' scry helps our deck. Also we don't have tons of mana in our deck, so not having to leave mana open to 'crack' seems a plus as well.
But is it better than Relic? Relic can 'eat' graveyards slowly without having to sacrifice it. And it 'replaces' itself with the card draw bonus. But... in many situations we already need to leave mana open to have an active counter spell or removal in hand (or to bluff it).
Tormod's Crypt is also something to look at. The crypt is 'free' to cast. But does not 'shut' down Tarmogoyf or Scavenging Ooze. It also does not have card draw nor scrying.
My conclusion: It has different application than Relic and Tormod, but enough impact to give it a serious try.
I think scry is no where near as powerful as draw and even though we can be tight on mana to activate Relic, the fact that it replaces itself is invaluable. A turn one Relic can keep graveyards in check without needed to sacrifice it, and a turn 10 relic can be cycled away to find the Lord we're looking for to attack for lethal. I wouldn't consider running either Totem or Crypt over Relic.

4:1 score will keep me on top of standings and I hope to finish the League in first place, before Masters at end of year.
In Modern, turn 2 is usually fast enough, and you aren't hurt by symmetry as much, so Relic is generally better. Crypt and Macabre have their places, though.
Game 1: Affinity
Match 1: I manage to make a big board, with 6 MoW tokens, but couldnt close the game out and he killed me with 2 overseers + ravager puting counters on a flyier.
Match 2: Kept a mediocre hand, but had harbinger and kira. Turn 3 he tried to all-in with a ravager on Inkmoth, vialed in harbinger, gg.
Match 3: We both Mull to 6, he kept a no-creature hand with 2 cranial plating. I opened a vial and kept 2 counters up all game. He only casted about 2 or 3 creatures + 2 inkmoth that a I manage to seas. I slowly tick at his health, managing to kill him with a gut shot :D.
SB: Match 2 I boarded the cerimonious, gut shot and chalice. Out 1 seas, 2 Mow, 2 Meerow, and 2 CC I think. Game 3 I boarded out the chalices and back 1 CC + Meerow.
(1-0)
Game2: UW Control
Match 1: I had 2 silvergil and a great hand. I manage to clique away a Veredict, and later that game got veredict losing 3 creatures. Rebuild my board with 2 more creatures + muta. He cryptic for fog about 3 times and was a long game, but he didnt found the other veredict and I manage to overrun him.
Match 2: Another long game, however this time he manage to sphinx's revelation for 6 on my draw (and i drew couterspell after... thats sad) and manage to win slowly from there with lands (killed 2 with dismember). He had about 5 minutes left.
Match 3: I realized that i just needed not to lose, and slowly drowned him out of resources and won on time.
SB: Seas + 2 harbinger + 1 cc out. 3 relics, 2 dispel, 2 unified in.
(2-0)
Game3: BlueMoon + Breach Emrakul
Match 1: He mulled to 6, casted about 10 cantrips in 5 turns, and lost without doing much.
Match 2: He kept a slow hand, I had a good one with silvergil a lot of lords and 2 Kiras. He played 2 Izzet Staticaster but neved managed to take control of the board and I swim my way to victory. He showed the hand and had 2 emrakul + ancient grudge(lol).
SB: 4 seas + 3 harbinger + 3 dismember out. 2 dispel, 2 unified, 2 chalice, 4 relics in.
(3-0)
Game 4: Eldrazi Tron
Match 1: Mull 6, but kept a good hand with a nice curve. He kept a natural-tron hand. But had relic + chalice as his first spells. The third one was a endbringer that I dismembered and won on the following turn.
Match 2: Another mull 6, and he had natural tron again. My hand wasnt that good this time, and lost to a big balista + ratchet bomb wiping away 2 of my vials.
Match 3: This time I had a nice hand. Vial into a nice curve. Again he had tron turn 3(disgusting) and I cerimonious rejection his first wurmcoil. On the following turn he wiped 3 of my creatures with an All is Dust. But I played harbinger + attacked him with muta the following turn, putting him down to 5. My hand was meerow + dismember and I had a vial on 3. On his turn he casted a TKS, targeting me. I vialled in meerow + dismember in response to trigger. He was down to 4 mana, casted a matter reshaper and pass. I drew another meerow, tap his creature > win.
SB: 3 MoW, 2 CC out. 3 cerimonious rejection, 2 unified Will in.
(4-0)
Game 5: Amulet Titan
Match 1: I overrun him with fish, after dismembering his asuza and slowing him down. Nothing he could do.
Match 2: He mulled to 5, my hand was quite good. He had a slow start, but asuza turn 3 and some lands to follow up. He ****ed up once with his titan and lost it to my blocks. After that I flooded out, and he didnt manage to do much after I dispeled his pact. I kept drawing lands, but was hiting him for 2 a turn. Drew some fish and had lethal on board. He drew a titan EXACTLY when he needed and closed the game from there.
Match 3: I mulled to 5, not so good hand. He had a perfect one, with amulet > azusa > piroclasm > amulet > titan > win. Nothing to do here.
SB: 3 MoW, 2 kira, 3 harbinger, 1 seas. In 3 cerimonious, 2 dispel, 2 unified will, 2 chalice.
(4-1)
Game 6: UR Kiki-Combo
Match 1: Kept a good 7, he kept a slow one without combo. I overrun him with fish from there.
Match 2: I had a good hand, with loads of fish, but no interaction apart from chalice. Chalice for 1 turn 2. He was dead next turn buy combo'ed me turn 5.
Match 3: This time I had everything, vial, lords, muta, kira, vendillion, even dismember. Played chalice for 1 turn 3. He tried to combo turn 5, dismebered his kiki-jiki and took it home from there.
SB: Seas out, 1 harbing out, 1 meerow out. 2 dispels, 2 unified will, 2 chalices in. (Relic here I think was bad, cause of chalice and only grave interaction is snapcaster. Rather have more fish.)
(5-1)
Game 7: Jund Shadow
Match 1: We both mull to 6, I kept a poor hand, he had the nuts. 2 discards, 3 removal, goyf, shadow, traverse. Shadow needs to get ban... noway this is fair.
Match 2: Again, kept an ok 7, he had the nuts with 2 shadow, tons of discards and more so removal. There is nothing you can do when you get hit for 6 by a one drop.
Game 8: Dredge
Match 1: Was a fair fight, till my MoW joined the party with 6 tokens. Easy after that;
Match 2: I had a good hand, cursecatcher, relic and loads of fish. He started with looting discarding 2 dredgers, so I played CC. Then he looted again, for some crazy amount of pressure already. Next turn I cracked the relic, and turn 3 he used cartaric reunion for more pressure. Never had a chance this game.
Match 3: Mull to 6, but had a great hand. Vial turn one, relic turn two and held it till something dangerous. He tried to neonate some cards I cracked it. He managed to comeback, conflagrating 2 of my creatures, but just to have his graveyard wiped away on the following turn by another relic. From there, it was smooth, with a MoW to finish the game.
SB: 3 Dismember, 2 Cliques and 1 Merrow out. 4 relics, 2 unified will(I don't think its good in this match-up tho, but it can help, maybe keep 1 clique + 1 merrow. However clique is just too bad here) in.
(6-2)
Game 9: Eldrazi Tron
Match 1: I had a great 7, with vial into a bunch of lords. He never had a chance, with his mull to 6 and no fast tron.
Match 2: Another great 7, with vial but only 1-lander(muta). Drew another muta, but flooded the board with fish and a lot of lords. He killed 3 of them, but I manage to scoop after that.
SB: 3 MoW, 2 CC out. 3 cerimonious rejection, 2 unified Will in.
(7-2)
Ended up at 9th place, sucks a LOT. The amulet titan guy that got lucky and misplayed against me finished 8th, guess it was his day.
Siren Stormtamer is a big "**** you" to merfolk, haha.
It would have been soo nice as a merfolk, it is printed in a set where Merfolk are relevant, and they make it a "Siren Pirate Wizard"???
Why not "Changeling minus merfolk" while they were at it?
There's only 9 other "Siren" cards, time for a ruling that sirens are Merfolk, we even have Seasinger!
Damn, that card got my hopes down for the set. It was soo close to what I wanted for Merfolk, and they pull this crap with it...
That 1-drop Siren is going straight into my Blue Steel deck, I won't wonder what could have been
Why are we even asking for it to be Merfolk? We never get cheap flyers, it isn't what this tribe does or gets.
I could see Mauseleum Wanderer turned Merfolk and lose flying, obsoleting Catcher, but not useful flying fish.

SB: 4 vials, 1 harbinger, 1 CC, 2 merrow OUT. 2 dispel, 2 chalice, 4 relics in.
(5-2)
Game 8: Dredge
Match 1: Was a fair fight, till my MoW joined the party with 6 tokens. Easy after that;
Match 2: I had a good hand, cursecatcher, relic and loads of fish.

Why are we even asking for it to be Merfolk? We never get cheap flyers, it isn't what this tribe does or gets.
I could see Mauseleum Wanderer turned Merfolk and lose flying, obsoleting Catcher, but not useful flying fish.
