I've had success with Tidebinder Mage in the past, to the point where I was actually winning more than 50% of the time. Others have run Gut Shot. Hibernation has always felt massively clunky to me.
Rot, my list is the same you are using. What you think that would be the best Sideboards in a LGS with: Afinnity, Elves, Counters Company, E-Tron, Lantern Control e a few UWx Controls ? Something that can cover almost all of them
In this metagame, I would actually change my list quite a bit. Having multiple artifact decks, multiple green decks, and 0 graveyard decks means you need Hurkyl's Recall and Tidebinder Mage. I'd also be tempted to play something else in the Kira spot, since most of the decks on this list don't have much spot removal.
hey guys, i own merfolk but haven't played with it in god knows how long as im usually playing tezzerator but has anyone seen/discussed the spoilers for ixalan, if they're real, of course. there's a merfolk doing a bad impression of Kira and a merfolk making creatures with +1/+1 counters on them unblockable, which is super useful against non blue decks and reduces pressure to draw/play a spreading seas?
Yep, I'm waiting until I can read the Merfolk with the protection effect before I decide if it's better than Kira or not. The "unblockable if you have +1/+1 counters" Merfolk won't be very useful with the current card pool, as scubahood86 described above.
Hey there guys, I'm not sure if it was ever discussed here but I wanted to get your thoughts on Diminish. It looks like a decent pseudo-removal card especially when merfolk has a lot of combat tricks to begin with and it only costs U.

I like the idea, I'm a huge fan of exploring the card pool and finding unplayed cards that could give an edge. Though I don't think this one quite does enough. We're not living in the Splinter Twin era where there's a creature that MUST be removed or you lose the game, but this one is too situational to even be counted as removal. Lots of creatures we don't want need to be killed ASAP and don't ever attack or block, and this is only removal if your opponent attacks or blocks AND we have a creature that is blocking or being blocked by it. At least Pongify or Rapid Hybridization can kill a Dark Confidant or Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet.
Agreed. Diminish is cute against things like DS, but doesn't deal with a lot of far more problematic threats. Counters Company, Affinity & Storm just to name a few.
Total tangent but that reminds me of the time I was running Circle of Flame and Polymorphist's Jest in standard with Haunted Platemail as my win con. Once people figured out what I was doing it was easy to play around, but that first FNM was glorious as people ran their 1/1's into a fiery oblivion lol Good times!
Thanks for the input guys. I suppose the best you can do with it is to use it as a 1-of during some event, then it'd be rendered useless right after since it's relatively easy to play around.
Only 24 people showed up because school is over and some went to the sea (real one).
R1 vs Sultai Shadow
Won the die roll and started with Vial onelander (Mutavault). Opponent had discard and creatures but when you have infinite gas pumping from Vial and opponent plays Islands, what else is needed?
Game 2, at one point I have a Lord, an Adept and 4 lands out, 4 cards in hand. Opponent plays inquisition of Kozilek, sees 4 Master of Waves and extends the hand. I chuckled.
2:0
R2 vs the Mirror
Won the die roll and kept a hand with 2 Islands, 2 Cursecatchers, 3 Lords. It was over very quickly.
I managed to not have Islands for a few turns in game 2. Deployed 3 Reejs and played Island Atlantis to go for 2 turn clock. He had Waves and Vial and some stuff but couldn't pass without Islandwalk enabled to kill me in one turn.
2:0
R3 vs Junk
Kept 4 lands (2 Muta), Vial, Image, Clique (not picky enough to mull that). When I had tenth land out he had 8 Lingering Souls tokens and finished me.
Game two was stomping by mana curve (CC, Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord...).
G3 he mulled to 6 into onelander, scryed, said YES! (left on top), fetched and facepalmed because he needed the second land so I did my best (or Seas' best) to finish him mercifully and quickly. 3 Reejs womit my hand and go to town.
2:1
R4 vs Eldrazi Tron
My hands were perfect, Rejections are "nuff said", a streategic Unified Will on Thought-Knot, Dismember on Endbringer, Snag + discard on Reality Smasher and guys get there. For second game he had a lot of Warping Wail, Dismember and +3/-3 but I drew more creatures, happens with 19 lands.
2:0
R5 vs Jund (regular)
He had Ravine, Stomping Ground and Swamp so I targeted black with Seas and that destroyed him.
Then he mulled to 5.
2:0
Evaded 3 Affinity and 4 Burn and played against mostly good matchups, but I am not complaining.
Plan to ride the wave until it loses steam. Apparently not in a Copter
Hey guys after a bit of a hiatus on Merfolk mtg Ive decided to dive back into the water. I'll be showing up at my local fnm this Friday. I'm a but undecided on what the deck should be. Since there is a lot of control and at least 3 decks running ensnaring bridge (lantern control, free win red, pillow fort). I'm lucky that there will not be any death shadows there hopefully. Any suggestions on what to run in a control infested meta??
I'm a huge fan of Steel Sabotage in the board. I've been running 2 forever and always found them great. Against affinity or Ensnaring Bridge they can stop the problem permanents from hitting the board (and against affinity we're not winning the race so slowing down and becoming control is the right play) or clear them away if they hit. A bit janky but combined with Echoing Truth you can counter the spell when they try to recast it. It's not as versatile of a counterspell as Ceremonious Rejection but that card is dead in hand if they land Bridge while you're tapped out.
Also since most people are running mono-U without true hard removal, it's pretty much an auto-win against Platinum Whatever.
EDIT: Went to 5 (possible 4). Tron had Nat Tron turn 3. Hunter Unified Will'd a Karn, but O-stone clears the 2 creatures hunter is able to assemble.

Decks I'm playing:
Modern: U Merfolk
Standard: I dislike Standard ATM

So close. Hoping he does well in the rest of the tournament!
Legacy: Merfolk U; Shadow UB; Eldrazi Stompy C
Pauper: Delver U
Vintage: Merfolk U

Sadly there's not much that puts counters on merfolk and it would play a totally different game if you went that route. Playable cards that deal with counters are
Cosi's Trickster
Metallic Mimic
Enclave Elite
Paperfin Rascal
Simic Fluxmage
None of those are good cards and it couldn't even be truly called a "Merfolk" deck anymore if that's all it was running.
I refrain from commenting on the other guy as the pictures aren't clear enough and Kira is pretty good with her own pseudo-unblockable going on.

Took this list again: http://tcdecks.net/deck.php?id=23563&iddeck=183449 with the same changes like in my last tournament: http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/modern/developing-competitive-modern/648255-merfolk?page=320#c8190
Main was the same, side was: +2 Rejection, +1 Dismember, +1 Relic; -2 Dispel, -1 Threads, -1 Kira.
Still not sure what am I doing with Images, Clique, 19 lands and all four Waves, with zero Copters, but I am going to play this deck until it disappoints.

Does Harbinger shut down the Devoted Druid combo? Or can they just stack infinite?
