I've been having friends tell me Cheerios is all over MTGO. Has anyone encountered it yet?
i played against it in a competitive league yesterday
Sram makes it better but it still seems pretty fringe. game 2 he drew the whole deck and grapeshotted me for 30 on turn 3.
i beat him 2-1 though

Fanattic, what about going All the way with copter and friends by replacing the two Rejereys with Kira? As a 61st card(for me) Id put the 4th harbinger back in and test a board like this.
2 Tidebinder mage
4 Sea's Claim
2 Dispel
2 Unified Will
2 Echoing Truth
2 Relic of Progenitus
1???
Only differences from my regular list is you are replacing rejerey with copter and kira, overall lowering the curve and increasing draw power. Im looking forward to testing it but rarely have time. Your thoughts?
As you mentioned, our draw power is severely increased with 4 Copter, but then Kira is not necessary. In this instance no one can kill all of our dudes. I see Copter as a powerful nonmerfolk spell like Vial and Seas, so cutting Reej for Kira is watering down our fish count.
Another nice thing about 2 mana 3/3 flyer is that he loots, so our sideboard cards, which are mostly 2-ofs, have more chance to show up.
If more people test the playset we could have better data. If all Copters die to removal before an attack, that just means we have super powerful 2-drop they can't ignore.
Fanattic, good reasoning, it wouldnt help much to increase draw power at the cost of silvergill and synergy. Remind me when I've more time to post my list from right after theros was released. Even being a small event, looking back theres no way I should have top8'd that iq. The deck was Sooo Super Fluffy. The core cards Really carry the archetype.
Hi! New Merfolk player from Uruguay here!. Traded my UR staples for the entire deck. I'm stopping by to show my list and try to get some insight from the more experienced players about my list and metagame. I'm not a completely stranger to the deck since a good friend of mine plays it and i'm suscribed to Nikachu as i've learned a lot from his videos about combat phase, a subject i'm pretty bad at.
The metagame here in Uruguay is pretty diverse. There was never an abundance in super-aggro like Infect, DSA and UR Prowess. It is infested of Burn though. If you don't show respect to Burn then you are basically signing your death sentence. Besides Burn being a top deck, there are some BG/x decks(you can expect to play agaisnt 1 at least in a regular-attended tournament), Merfolk is a played deck also. At FNM level, that's pretty much it. Burn, some blue based control deck, Abzan CoCo,etc.
Then you have the big tournaments where top players usually chose some form of combo. Ad Nauseam and RG Breach/Shift are the most common ones.
Just for reference, a high-attendance event around here is about 50 people. Not much but it's pretty competitive.
^Agree. I've had it completely shut Burn down on the play and lead to some quick blowouts. Especially if they keep a greedy hand and are missing land drops. On the draw it can be a bit clunky and feel like you are constantly a step behind. Not a good place to be against Burn.
As for Cheerios... I haven't played against it yet, but I've had the deck for a few years for casual play and just updated it. Looking forward to playing it at my LGS just as a change of pace and there are frequently a few other Fish players so I'll hopefully be able to collect some useful data. Hopefully I don't run into Chalice lol
Well, that just gives you the option to run it or not.
I don't quite see 8seas working against burn consistently. Yes there will be games in which it works. On the play it might be good. But on the draw? I dont see it.
Decks like Burn and Bogels get thrashed by 8-seas because almost all their cards require colored mana. Turn 1 sea's claim on the draw is fantastic. You would have to play the games out but nailing a land severely slows their clock down (or shuts their hand down) which gives us more time to get to MoW mana and when MoW hit the board it's very clearly over with the extra devotion.
I'm sure you can bring up scenarios where it doesn't work because they have an incredible draw, but likely you're cooked vs those run outs even under normal circumstances.
A burn heavy meta is a good reason to go the Sea's Claim route.
can you pls try copter in the next modern league?? I'm not on modo, but shouldn't they be cheap after the ban?
I just don't see the purpose of the card. In exchange for some utility out of copter, you are attacking with 1 creature instead of 2. I think it makes up for the disadvantage but I don't see any theoretically situations where copter would give me a concrete advantage vs our worst match ups. Even against affinity we need to tap creatures to activate it which means we have less creatures to block with.
Which brings me to another point, on turn 3 you basically have to tap your team down to attack with the guy. Assuming you turn 2 copter, turn 3 you'll playb a creature and tap him, leaving no defense on your opponent's next turn. In fact, you'll always be one attacker short when you want to use the copter. Sometimes this won't matter because we don't even want to attack or block with a single islandwalker on the board, but in a race vs combo, we would.
I do like how it dodges all sorcery speed sweepers like Anger of the Gods and Supreme Verdict. But it still dies to all removal in the format, including Kolaghan's command.
The looting is also very good, our deck can use all the filtering we can get.
I watched a decent chunk of Mr.Mulligan play with the card. I wasn't impressed overall. It did things, but I didn't think it did enough things. It has just enough downsides that I'm passing on t unless someone can really prove it's worth, or if the meta shifts to a point where it's good.
Hi guys. Long time Elf player here. I've always been drawn to Merfolk though. You think if I also built Merfolk it would be too similar to Elves? Or is it different enough to warrant making as another deck. Also, do you find yourself running out of steam? With my elves we have access to collected company and lead the stampede and such. Do you find yourself running out of creatures or is Silvergil Adept enough?
Im new to the merfolk community. After playing naya burn for a while I wanted a second deck to play in modern.
Last Friday I purchased merfolk based on this list; https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/550785#online
I have a lot of learning, reading to do so I will be a silent reader for a while!
Kind regards!
welcome to the school. this list is an excellent place to get your feet wet. GL!

Just got back from a short vacation, and I see there's been some activity on here. First, let me address a few points that have been made:
8-Seas Merfolk absolutely destroys Burn. They need colored mana sources to function, and they run precious few lands. I've run 8-Seas into Burn a few times now, and the results are very one-sided in my favor, whether it be on the play or on the draw. Once you've slapped 2-3 Seas down, they're usually going to have to rely on whatever they have on board to win, and that's not going to get it done, especially when you follow the Seas up with a Master of Waves. This is one of the several reasons I think 8-Seas is excellently positioned at the moment.
Smuggler's Copter is intriguing, but it's a card that I think is best suited for the non-Merfolk flex spots (i.e. in the spots most people use on Dismember/Spell Pierce/Vapor Snag). Diluting your threat count doesn't seem productive, nor does introducing more dead topdecks.
As for the metagame as a whole, the resurgence in Affinity is worrying, but it also comes with Lantern completely dropping off the map, so I guess it works out more or less even from the "decks I don't really want to face" perspective. Everything else looks great for us - we can handle G creature decks like Abzan Company with Tidebinder Mages (though having that along with 8-Seas might be really straining our sideboard space), and Kira, Great Glass-Spinner looks better than it has in a while. Overall, though, I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into the new metagame.
Agreed. I just faced it twice last league, and it didn't much matter. On a related subject, I'm happy that I have another 5-0 to report (evidence below)! I faced the following decks:
This league was set up for Spellskite to shine, and I drew it a couple of times. Still didn't end up casting it - the aggro plan was enough that I didn't need it. I'm definitely swapping it out for Kira, Great Glass-Spinner going forward.
Lots of Prowess decks out there. I remain unimpressed by it. Merfolk is very well suited to beating it.

I'm very new to Merfolk having only played it for a few months, so I'm far from an expert. But I also have a G/b CoCo Elves modern deck that I like to run out when I have the opportunity so I thought I'd chime in. The decks are similar in that they both aim to get a bunch of creatures out quickly, pump them up, and swing, but are also quite different. Going from green to blue, you lose things like CoCo, Lead, and Chord, but gain access to the various counterspells, Hurkyll's Recall, Vapor Snag, 8 Seas, Kira, Clique, Phantasmal Image, etc. Being able to play CoCo or Chord as an instant on your opponent's turn works similarly to Aether Vial as far as tricks go. Vialing in a Master of Waves on their end step can be really fun! Card draw is decent with both Silvergill and Spreading Seas in the main deck. In general I'd say if you enjoy playing your Elves deck you'll likely enjoy Merfolk as well...at least I do!

What do you guys think about my list going on?.
Thanks a lot!
Yeah, the sb might be off, it is quite adapted to the last metagame. Not sure if 8 sea's is good right now. My buddy is running it though.
I think he said that 8 sea's was good against Burn.
On the land subject: I have the Minamo/Oboro/Hub package. I didn't feel it necessary because Moon and Choke are not that common.
I will test and make some changes and report back!
