well played, i just switched from D&T to you guys i played with it very little but it just seemed like a worse vial deck than merfolk not as powerful, ive been watching a lot of yours and merfolk joes material the last few days havent had a chance to play yet after watching but im sure itll help, glad to see the thread so active im SCOS429 on mtgo if any of you would like to add me and maybe play some time , i really want to get better at magic and better with A deck really learn it in and out i feel like thats the best way to succeed in modern
hey guys, played a few leagues with the deck now and have some questions.
so you know i am playing rothgars build from the primer, 2 spell pierce 2 snag main and same sideboard
against the tron decks how are we sideboarding? are we overloading on threats and just trying to present a fast clock or are we siding in the unified will's to try and counter their threats in the late game?
is there an extensive sideboard guide someone can point me to?
lastly i would like to thank nikachu, merfolk joe, rothgar and everyone else for their dedication to merfolk and this thread the amount of material you guys have made readily accessible is a large part of the reason i chose to play this deck. i just picked it up a few days ago and feel like i am progressing at a much faster pace than I should be because of the material you guys have provided and it is greatly appreciated.
Snag is a bit narrow, so we swap it for E-Truth, which can catch planeswalkers and Oblivion Stones. Master of Waves is too slow, so we can swap it for countermagic. GW Tron is probably bringing in Blessed Alliance against us (in addition to the Path to Exiles they already have), so the Dispel will have plenty of targets. Unified Will is effectively Counterspell in this matchup.
As for an extensive sideboard guide... I haven't written one yet (mainly because there are some matchups I'm still sort of figuring out), but I could do it if persuaded.
Brazilian next big GP going to be GP Sao Paulo, and it will be MODERN.
I`m so excited and already bit crazy trying to set an ultimate list for the champs...but I guess this the deck main problem, theres no "ultimate"list for us, merfolk are not linear as people think it is
Exactly. My suggestion is to pick a list that covers a lot of ground, and get very familiar with it. You can make some minor edits as the tournament date approaches.
I'm pretty sure the only reason Merfolk ever wins is because people keep bad hands, can't kill Master of Waves, or get Spreading Seas'ed out. Make sure you kill all of their relevant stuff and play your mana specifically to avoid getting locked out. It isn't hard to do
Murderous Cut: There's something to be said regarding a threshold for delve spells, and I think with nine fetchlands and four Thought Scour, five is pretty close to the ceiling for reliability. That said, the first Cut is pretty much always better than the third Terminate. A pure fire of hatred burns inside of me for Master of Waves, seeing as I lose to Merfolk almost every time I play against it.
Some pros know where it's at.
I show my respect for Delver by making sure that Cut costs 5 mana
Looks like our Jund and Grixis matchups just got harder: This kills Master of Waves.
I like this card a lot. But i dabble in a lot of decks and different formats. Not as good as tragic slip but better than ulcerate was in standard, imo. Could definitely cause problems for us.
I don't think so. Early game it's great. But more of a dead draw late game, since it doesn't put counters on creatures already in play. It also doesn't work with silvergill since it is not a merfolk until it enters the battlefield. And then what do you take out for it? I'd rather have a counter or a harbinger in my hand then this (I think). although how much fun would it be to vapersnag a lord in response to a removal spell and then have it come back with a +1/+1 counter on it! I'll definitely be testing it!
Edit: I would be curious to know how this would interact with mutavault? Probably when the land enters?
That card looks good for our deck. Can do some nice tricks if you name elemental lol.

Mimic can save Elementals and works with Vial. It also alleviates the pressure to have colored mana in starting hand.
This is enough for me to take it seriously.

Playing in a #MTGO PPTQ. Rd.1 WIN 2-0 vs Infect. I had everything. Vials, Harbingers, Gut Shot, counters, Tidebinder, everything.
Rd.2 LOST 1-2 vs Death's Shadow. Close match! Had a slow hand on the play G3 and my 2 Cavern of Souls choked my blue mana!
Rd.3 WIN 2-0 vs Amulet Titan. 2x Unified Will countered 2x Primeval Titans!
Rd.4 WIN 2-1 vs UWR Control Very narrowly won that one thanks to Unified Will and a Clique that stole a Wrath of God a turn before the kill!
We're going to the PTQ! Rd.5 Win 2-0 vs RG Ponza. Tidebinder, Gut Shot, Seas, Unified Will are all stars. Went 4-1 which earns a PTQ ticket
A little bit of humor to cheer us up
