About Brave the Elements:
1. Use it to attack unblocked
2. Use it to block non-evasive creatures and save life
3. Use it to save your creatures from Pyroclasm (or other damaging wipes)
4. Use it to save your Pridemate from removal
That looks like a bunch of cool reasons to run it, but:
1. You can almost always wait for flyers/kill them 1 by 1 with Pridemate. Lots of opposing creatures to block usually mean a good matchup for SS.
2. You have lots of life and chumping 1 more turn won't help you much.
4. It's 1 for 1, doesn't matter too much on the long term. If you need to kill a combo quickly you probably won't have the mana open for this on turn 2/3.
Pyroclasm lose you games though. That's why I like Burrenton Forge-Tender. It can save you from red wipes, it's a creature trigger, it doesn't sit in your hand and it's tutorable with ranger.
Depending on your meta, you might need to alpha strike more often, but playing cards that are always active and being on the offensive has been more fruitful to me then countering removal with Brave.
Yes i'm using mono white. I love the consistency. I haven't gone against RG tron and i don't look forward to. Does anyone for that matter
R/G Tron is one of the hardest matchups for Soul Sisters. I have a record of 1-2 against it in FNMs. Game one is nearly impossible, unless you have double active Ascendants. Post sideboard games are still hard but winnable, you just have to be able to play a hate card turn 2.
I won one game by playing Suppression Fields turns 2 and 3 and then drawing into a Stony Silence a few turns later.
I won another game by playing Stony Silence turn 2 and a Suppression field a few turns later.
Both of those games were backed up by swarms of creatures and Honor effects.
The goal is to slow them down with Suppression Fields and Stony Silences, blank Karn with a huge amounts of threats and taxing from Fields, Path any Wurmcoils, and kill them before they can play ANY Eldrazi.

Round 1 vs Jund
Game 1: They start off slow with only a Deathrite out and don't get Bob until a few turns later and he gets immediately Pathed + Mindcensored. Double Sisters + Ajani's into Spectral Procession was brutal. He used his Maelstrom Pulse to get rid of my 12/12 Cat. Honor of the Pure + Spirits ensured victory when he didn't get another Pulse, Infest, or other wipe. He had out a Chandra 4.0 but apart from Bolting down an Ascendant and pinging some Sisters to death, it didn't do much.
Game 2: Hawks + Honors. He didn't really get out much threatening pieces. He did go through 2 Chandras and get out a Liliana but I just overwhelmed him with Spirit tokens while staying at a health life total to not need to block. Awkward moment when he used Chandra's +1 on a Sister with Honor out.
2-0
Played another game against him for fun. Didn't try too hard and didn't make optimal plays. He got to the point where he could have killed me next turn, then died to his double Bobs...
Round 2 vs R/G Tron
Game 1: Lead very aggressively despite mulling to 5. Hawks refilled my hand and Ghost Quarter was able to keep him off of Tron. I just kept bringing the beats and won with fliers.
Game 2: Was able to bring him down to 6 and slow him down with some Suppression Fields and Stony Silence but he managed to get off an O-Stone the turn before I could swing for lethal, then rebuild his board state with a Wurmcoil.
Game 3: Slowed him down with Fields and Stony Silences and brought him to 1 before he O-Stoned. Still had some creatures in hand this time. O-Stoned again. But Martyr brought home the victory when he had neither O-stone nor Karn to kill it.
2-1
I don't remember which game it was, (I think it was game 2) but I Pathed + Aven Mindcensored his Ulamog. Just wanted to share that fun play with everyone.
Round 3: vs Living End
Game 1: After his first cycle I knew what he was on so I didn't dump all my creature out onto the board, which I feel was a mistake as I might have been able to kill him before he went off. Post Cascade I didn't have enough removal for his beats and didn't have big enough creature to block with. Could have won if I had miracled into a Honor of the Pure as I had out 3 fliers and he was at 6.
Game 2: I really misplayed. I had a RIP in my opening hand and had I played it I would have seriously delayed his combo and likely would have won. Instead I chose to bring him down to 7 life on turn 4. After which he comboed off and I lost after stalling for several turns.
0-2
Round 4: vs Burn
Game 1: He used his burn on my creatures rather than my face. One mistake I feel he made was to not use his Grim Lavamancer to kill my guys. He never activated it once. I had stowed a Martyr of Sands under my hideaway and when I attacked with Ascendant, Hawk, and Ajani's flipped it in responsed to his Magma Jet on Ascendant, shooting up to 32 life, then 38 post combat damage after which he scooped.
Game 2: His turn 2 Torper Orb made my turn 2 Squadron Hawk very sad. I had an opening hand with Auroik Champion but it took me several turns to get the double white I needed. After which I just kept chumping his Goblin Guide. He did manage to bring me down to 6 which put me in danger of Bolt + Flashbacked Bump in the Night and he Skullcracked in response to what would have been a Martyr activation for 18 life. I slowly climbed back up with an Ascendant and after using Paths to get rid of all his creatures he conceded to lethal on board.
2-0
I went a total of 3-1 earning me 4th place from tiebreakers. The Living End player I lost to unitentionally drew to the only other undefeated player (also on Living End). There was a 3 way tie for first place because there was also one other person who went 3-0-1. Had the Living End player I lost to won his final match I would have gotten 3rd. The only reason I mention this is because how rare it is for there to be a 3 way tie for first place.
I seriously misplayed against Living End having never played against it before. Game 1 I should have been more aggressive as I have no way to interact pre-board and should have attempted to kill him before he could combo off rather than hold up creatures for after the Living End wipe. Game 2 I should have played my Rest in Peace as soon as possible, it would have meant he couldn't combo off until he dealt with it and the only thing he had to kill it that I know of would have been Beast Within. I did sideboard correctly against the deck, the RiP and Suppression Fields would have hurt him badly I just foolishly did not play them soon enough.
That said, I still feel I did well, I beat out Jund, the top deck of Modern, and R/G Tron, one of Soul Sisters' hardest matchups.
My meta has shifted over the last few months. There are a lot less Affinity deck and more Jund decks and at least one other person has picked up R/G Tron. Living End was surprising to see as so far, no one had played combo at my store except for the lone Melira Pod player. I will be more prepared the next time I face it. RWU is still pretty big, for 3/4 rounds one player faced the mirror. For once I didn't have to play against Titans.dec which I still have no idea how to sideboard against. There was one other player using Soul Sisters at the FNM though I'm not sure what his record was.
I just want to point out something to people who doubt the power of Squadron Hawk in Modern. I won game one against R/G Tron, off of a Mull to 5, because of Squadron Hawk.
Today we mark the death of Jund's reign as lord of Modern. The loss of Deathrite it going to hit them hard and even now they have difficulty with fliers. How will they do when Bitterblossom Tokens are everywhere?
That being said, how will Soul Sisters react to this change in the meta?
With Nacatl unbanned we should expect a resurgence of Naya aggro decks. This should be a matchup in our favor, but they will likely pack lots of removal to deal with out threats ie. Paths, Bolts, Helixes. And as with Affinity, they can easily overwhelm the board and dump their hand. It should be treated similarly to how we deal with other fast aggro decks. Auriok Champions will be great at dealing with Goblin Guide and Kird Apes but doesn't do much against Goyf, Nacatl, and Scooze.
The introduction of Bitterblossom to the Modern format will likely result in dozens of brews over the next few weeks but ultimately two or three will stand out. This card powers up BW Tokens and I'm expecting Delver decks to take off. UBx Faeries will likely become a thing, or people will at least try to make it one. This will mean a wider variety of "control decks" apart from just RWU.
Based off these banlist changes I suggest adding some Sundering Growths to the sideboard and possibly Sunlance and board wipes.

I think soul sisters is in a really good place with these bans. Zoo will be the default "best" deck, and we have a pretty good zoo match up. Hopefully zoo will also push tron out of the format completely.
Alright so zoo and Fae are not bad matchups. Faeries is a little bit harder but all the 1/1s can be over powered, and I'm not sure if they run counters. in zoo, we just have to be patient with that path to exile. Ghostly Prison might be a good sideboard card now. Also zoo runs maindeck Qasali pridemage's.

So now that BNG is essentially out... do you guys think Mortal's Ardor or sunbond have a place in this deck? Not really sure what I would cut to place these in here though, which is I think the problem with trying to add pieces in.
Hi
I am new to the thread and willing to build a SS deck. I have been reading the thread but was unable to find a list of reasons for not playing at least 1 cavern of souls in the deck. Does it really screw the manabase?
Faeries is a little bit harder but all the 1/1s can be over powered, and I'm not sure if they run counters..
Not to sound rude but Faeries is a blue deck, it runs counters including Spellstutter Sprite. Faeries worries me more than Zoo does because of the counters + fliers. Faeries tends to do things at instant speed during our turn. I don't like that Faeries is going to question our aerial dominance, the only other deck with lots of fliers is BW Tokens who will likely make use of Bitterblossom.
Zoo is likely to be more difficult match than most people think. I played Burn on Friday and while game 1 was solidly in my favor, I did not feel as comfortable game 2. They can seriously swarm the field, while we can swing over there heads, its still scary facing down a bunch of 2/3s and larger.

Faeries you should board in enchantment removal, maybe dismember if you have it. Zoo can outclass and remove our creatures real quick and destroy our anthems.

How is Zoo outclassing Ajani's Pridemate and Serra Ascendant while you are gaining enough life to make their creatures unable to do anything.
They bolt pridemate before it gets big or path to exile it. I played this deck for a long time and quit because of my opponents out-removed and out-played my creatures.

I first played this deck back in Fall 2011 because it was the best choice against Zoo, the top deck at the time until they banned Nacatl. Both lists for Zoo and Soul Sisters are practically 100% the same as it was then... Soul Sisters should still be a strong choice against it. Epecially being on the play, a Serra Ascendant into a Martyr of Sands they pretty much can't beat, as long as they aren't packing a Lightning Bolt or Path to Exile for their first turn. Once you go past 30, and block whatever they swing at you with your 6/6 flying lifelink, your life becomes too difficult for 2/3's and 3/3's to deal with.
If Zoo becomes popular again, and Splinter Twin keeps resurging, sideboarding Ghostly Prison may be an option again though.
Before we begin discussing sideboard options I think we should step back and wait for all the brewing to be finished that way we'd have a better idea of what exactly we are up against. A Zoo list is easier to guess at than Faeries, but I don't want to wind up sideboarding for something that isn't there.
I think I'm going to start testing out a singleton Spear of Heliod again, with an influx of creature decks this will help our combat math and is nice pseudoblocker. If you leave the mana up, a lot of players won't want to swing in with their better creatures and you can just use it to clear out their weaker ones. I personally do not like my dominance of the skies tested. Faeries must learn to fear the Squadron Hawk.

Sideboard is limited by cards I have but is mostly what I'd just play anyway. I tested with 3 Windbrisk Heights and didn't like drawing two in a game so I went down to two. Put a Ghost Quarter in to see how it would do.
Round 1: UR Delver/Pyromancer: Loss 1-2
Match-up seems favorable. I won game 1 on a mull to 5 pretty handily. Boarded in 2 Auriok Champion, a Brave the Elements, and Rest in Peace. Sideboard decisions seemed ok but lost the next two games.
Round 2: Mono-Black Vampire Brew: Loss 1-2
Pretty embarrassed at losing this one as the deck was pretty bad. Match-up was bad for whatever reason, barely won one game.
Round 3: Bye: Hooray, actually won a round.
Round 4: RG Tron: Loss 1-2
Won game one pretty handily, but then got Torpor Orb sided in against me the next two games, which I couldn't beat. Sided in Stony Silences for both games and then a Sundering Growth once I saw the Torpor Orb.
So not great overall, but the deck was always competitive. I never got the nut draw of Serra Ascendant into Martyr which was pretty frustrating. Sometimes the deck feels like a lot of bad cards and you can get overwhelmed quickly if you don't have synergistic opening.
Some thoughts on my list:
- Not sure if 3 Ranger of Eos is right. I found myself wanting to side 1 out a lot because it was too slow.
- Also found myself wanting to side out Honor of the Pures a lot. Drawing two in a game is frustrating.
- Auriok Champion was good in basically every matchup. I might want to main the two I have.
- 2 Windbrisk seems right and I like at least having access to Ghost Quarter in the board.
