So my LGS has no combo except for KCI and no Storm or Infect either. People play either control decks like Blue Moon, Jeskai, or UR Thing, midrange like Jund, and creature tribal like Humans or Elves. How would people approach building a Sisters list for this kind of meta? I have the Modern Event Deck cards and I can splash for either Black or White.
I would start with 2 Eidolon of Rhetoric try to slow down tempo, spirits are great blockers spectral procession or Linguaring souls .
2 worship Thalia, Heretic Cathar , maybe a fog effect instant vs elves, 1 mana tith to keep them honest, Kambal, Consul of Allocation vs control.
Well thats my 2 cents worth. Most of the match ups I have had vs those decks have been 60-40 in my favor. Jund and Elves being the harder match ups. If elves does not explode early it becomes a huge grind out match with SS wining due to huge life shield and better flyers and a monstrous Cat.

Mm, so you'd recommend the black splash then? I have a full set of seize and inquisition too, along with tidehollows.

I go with a light black splash. It is not needed but it gives you such great cards like LS and tidehollows, Kambal, fatal push is value and can act as a #5 path. I would avoid the seize and Inquisition in favor of the creatures that have that tacked on (kitesail freebooter, deadeye tormentor, tidehollow).
Anybody been playing lately? I could have won my modern night last week, but I got mana screwed in FOUR GAMES! I think we are much better positioned than we were in years past.
i have been playing and really enjoying playing it. i am still trying to tweak the deck, but still running a basic thune/ranger/bugler package and seems pretty good. the only things ive been struggling with is of course the usual god tier hands people get. other than that, the deck does feel decently placed.
At my LGS there is always a storm deck, mono green stompy, and Tron. I find these match-ups almost unwinnable. But the rest of the field falls quite nicely.
I have been playing H1 trying to improve that deck (which looks like some kind of spell-slinger might be an answer).
I "borrowed" my key cards of SS for Jeski Delver deck.
some tech for you guys to try- jotun grunt Helps vs jeski, dredge, mardu, the Rock, storm... No one sees it coming.
I decided to main deck Thalia, but having Honor of the Pure became kind of awkward, so I cut it... I still haven't decided if it's a good thing or not, but Thalia has been awesome. The only problems I've had since are those awkward hands with Pridemate and no lifegain, but I still stand by the fact that it JUST SHOULDN'T HAPPEN! Magic can be unforgiving sometimes.
im about to drop honor of the pure as well. im only running 2 in the first place. im not sure if i want to run thalia-GoT at all for the fact i still stand behind running spectral procession. especially if i am running thune and having even just one sister out with windbrisk. those 3 aspects keep it really fun. but with lieutenant, pumping all creatures does sound pretty awesome.
been playing soul sisters quite a lot lately with a lot of good success. only because of the meta in the city being a lot of humans, spirits, dredge, deathshadow. i have been enjoying the deck a lot too. i hope to see some good cards from the next set help us in any way lol
The only reason Honor became awkward for me is I run main deck Thalia. I’m not sure I would cut it in a standard shell.
Also, has anyone tried Conclave Tribunal? When you think about casting it on turn 3, you can cast Spectral and as long as you have another creature, use your four creatures to remove a Liliana, Teferi, or other troublesome permanent.
[cards]Banishing Light , Oblivion Ring, Silkwrap , Hixus, Prison Warden , Banisher Priest do not see play, Tribunal is meh. If the opponent i splaying a PW we can usually kill it with combat with our flyers. If it had flash I would consider it.
I should have clarified... There’s a lot of people who run Oblivion Ring as a 1-of, and I’d wondered if they tried Tribunal. We don’t have the cards to take advantage of the Oring trick, so I think Tribunal would be better.
I have done quite a bit of testing with 2-3 Tribunal in the maindeck (though I never ran O-ring main before) - love it, play it. So what if we can kill PWers easily with spirits...its there to deal with a lot more than just PWers. And yes exactly, it feels really powerful when you T3 cast Spectral Procession into convoking a Tribunal. I'm on 2 Maindeck nao.
Quote from Phil
Have a helicopter drop you off out front. Light your cigar with a small Indonesian boy holding a black lotus. Then bust out a craw wurm deck with no sleeves. Raw dog shuffle, loose terribly, flip the table, leave in a hovercraft.
Okay I know discussion has been kinda dead her but I think currently Soul Sisters might be in one of the best positions It's been in for a long time. Auriok Champion currently hoses 7/10 of the top decks per goldfish.
I know I use to hate the W/B versions but I have been testing out the black splash just for lingering souls and surgicals and dismember in the side and I have been enjoying it.
I plan to play this for SCG Regionals in a week and would love any feedback anyone has.
Huge fan of the deck. Have the cards for it, but playing Martyr Proc right now. I love Auriok Champion so much I actually have two in my deck, though mostly because I play in a very red meta. I think SS could be in good shape, and the version I played looks almost exactly like yours. I loved Lingering Souls in this deck. The new Serra in Modern Horizons is an exciting card, and would be worth testing in the BW build.
I wonder if 4 Ghost Quarter will get in the way of casting Spectral Procession on turn 3. I use Ghost Quarter a lot in Martyr, and I would want to play them in SS if I switched back to it.
I'm not a sideboard expert, but I would take out Tempest of Light (seems good against Bogles), the fourth Auriok Champion (I would personally put the fourth in the main and swap out one Soul Warden), and maybe Thalia. I play Eidolon of Rhetoric and Damping Sphere in Martyr, so I have a better comfort level with those. Thalia might be better... I always felt that if I need to bring in Thalia, I will need more non-creature spells for that same match, and bringing her in might make things awkward. Thalia does more in decks like Humans and Death and Taxes. If you're comfortable with Thalia, then it could be a better fit for you.
@ulka:
I like your deck I played something similar.
I like LS, I played the full 4, I would also look for a spot MB for 1 basic swamp (bloodmoon, path to exile), the martyrs for me either have been good or terrible overall so I am not a fan.
Sb
I would take out Auriok and switch with Mirran Crusader
I play 2 Blessed alliance verses boggles
temple of light and forsake the worldly seem like over kill, what decks are you planing on using them for? keep in mind your deck uses a few Enchantments also. Would sundering growth be a better card?
as for leylines I do not own any so I have no expertise on them. The seem good vs storm & hand disruption, burn is not much of an issue. 3 slots are a lot. I think 2 damping sphere would be better (tron, storm,) 1 shalai, voice of plenty (hexproof for most)
Good Luck, nice to see a fellow SS kicking the deck out.
I'm playing in a local tournament next weekend and need sideboarding advice. Specifically I need to know what to take out for each matchup. Knowing what to bring in is usually kind of obvious. This is what my sideboard looks like at the moment. I don't have access to Leylines.
Vs. Tron - In: Stony Silences and Damping Sphere. Out: 3x Archangel of Thune (too slow) and 2x Martyr of Sands?
Vs Dredge - In: Rest in Peace and Hallowed Burial. Out: I dunno, LOL! I see creature stalemates forming so in the long run maybe Archangel of Thune is good against Dredge. Maybe Haazda Marshall?
Vs. Storm - In: Rest in Peace and Damping Sphere. Out: 3x Archangel of Thune again? Too slow. Maybe Martyr because it's almost impossible to gain enough life to put yourself out of Grapeshot range.
Vs Titan Shift - In: Runed Halo and maybe Brave the Elements Out: I don't know.
Vs Boggles/Infect - In Blessed Alliance Out: Archangel?
The general theme from my vantage point seems to be that against a mid-range creature deck (such as they are in Modern) then you leave Archangel in and against anything faster you side them out. Do I have this right?
Vs. Merfolk - This has been a difficult match up for me in the past. They can pump out creatures fast with Aether Vial and make them big fast with all the lords and overwhelm me even if I do again a bunch of life. They have combat tricks and can counter haymakers like Archangel of Thune. So, I dunno... I need advice for the Merfolk matchup in general. There will be at least one Merfolk deck in the tournament.
Before the tournament I'm going to try to pick up one more Auriok Champion and jam it in the main deck somewhere.
Okay, I do have a question about my maindeck. Should I just abandon the Archangel of Thune plan altogether and run Spectral Procession instead? I would have to pick them up somehow before the tournament. I do not own any. I know, that's weird, right?
Thanks in advance for any advice you have for me. Let me know if you think I've missed something obvious and crucial in my sideboard. Thanks!
When Archangel hits, she usually wins the game. If anything, I’d drop marshal for the Processions.
You seem to have the sideboard pretty well figured out, so how about being more specific? Only thing I noticed is you have no artifact/enchantment destruction, so you’re doomed if you face a Chalice / Worship / Bridge deck.

I dunno, I just wanted to stick a new card in the deck and I wanted to keep the land count tight so going low with the Marshal seemed like a plan. And I got to thinking about how hard it is to cast Archangel (though Legion's Landing does help) and that's why I thought about chunking them for the Processions.
I've had someone recommend Wispmare recently as a way to get around Chalice. That or maybe Leonin Relic-Warder. How spicy does Conclave Tribunal sound? Very flexible and it costs one mana if you need it to. I wish I had access to Cavern of Souls but I do not. Sideboard is so tight.
Does anyone know how Soul Sisters matches up against the Arclight Phoenix deck? Thing in the Ice seems like the scariest card in the deck to me. Otherwise I think the combo of lifegain and quick beats should do the trick.
And I still don't know what to do with Merfolk. Maybe it's not as bad as I'm making it out to be but I have bad memories of being run over by a Merfolk deck one time.
FWIW, I was in Birmingham last weekend. Pelham more specifically. Bought a car there.
Arclight has been a breeze for me. I just save the paths for TitI and then focus on just chipping them becasue while arclights can provide a solid burst of damage I found auriok champion has been an allstar. With Lingering Souls and Spectral procession proving enough air blockers I can normally get an Archangle or Pridemate to take them out. Its more of a war of attrition with the Phoenix deck i guess is what Im saying.
With your build I could see arclight being more an issue due to the lack of fliers and the fact you are going more aggressive than that standard Sisters list.
I gotta say with dredge and pheonix being top decks right now I love having 2 surgical extractions in the sideboard as it is a free spell that just can save me so much life. Hitting a bloodghast against dredge seals the game up majority of the time same to hitting a pheonix.
