Bringing the Sisters to a big tourney this weekend, I think. Haven't played it in a tourney since late August when I lost a win-and-in at a pptq to Affinity, a matchup I am not worried about. I did not have Ghost Quarters... and that would have made a world of difference in another match I lost (Tron, of course).
I am looking at the Thalia idea that I see in two of the recent successful Sisters builds, and I know it's something we have talked about before. Is Thalia really THAT good in the current meta? I honestly don't know... my sideboard is a bit incomplete at the moment, and a part of me wants to try out Cartel Aristocrat in the sideboard, too... I don't know.
I am sticking with the Black splashing for Lingering Souls over Secure the Wastes, although a part of me wants to try a copy of it in the sideboard... although I'm not entirely sure WHEN I board it in.
My sisters are 4 Auriok Champion, 3 Soul's Attendant, and 2 Soul Warden for a total of 9. I am always nervous about dropping the champ count to make the deck just a wee bit faster, especially with Ghost Quarter in the deck, and it would violate my comfort zone considerably to know that I am playing with one less champ... but is there a lot more value in playing with another one-drop sister over a champ? (btw... the "MAY" gain life clause on Soul's Attendant is something that bit me in the ass before when I forgot it was on there... it's a small thing that will rarely matter, but it does).
The may isn't a big deal now thanks to the rule change. If you miss any sister trigger, Warden or Attendant, it's on the opponent whether or not you get that life. Mays actually better now, in case they try a Tainted Remedy.
I think you sister count is a little low and I would probably jump to 4, 3, 3 or 3, 3, 3.
Is this deck still a 4-0 contender? About to start grinding MODO tix and this deck is only $60ish. Last time I played online, I liquidated my collection so I'm trying to go straight back but with a deck that's cheap while I grind the tickets for a different deck. I just can't play Pauper anymore. Minus the banning of Berserk and infect going away, that format has stayed the same and I am bored of it.

I don't think mono colour is particularly viable at the moment. The black splash adds Lingering Souls, but really doesn't change how the deck functions at all, and so carries the same weaknesses as mono. I've been playing with a green splash for sideboard Gaddock and Choke, and I've been finding it to be significantly better than mono. You could even up the Gaddock count to 3 to beat Tron, but it's actually decently playable post-board in GW. In terms of viability, the green splash seems the best to me (since the sideboard is great), but if you're running into a lot of aggro on MODO, any is a great choice.
I agree with you. Just wondering how/why Thalia worked out for those other decks. One of them had a copy of Thalia in the main.
Haven't seen the lists, but the traditional builds just run Spectral, Honor and Path. Not terrible for Thalia. Lingering Souls at 4 and 3 is significantly worse than lingering souls at 3 and 2. Not to mention Thoughtseizes post board.
Edit: I suddenly wish Commander was legal in Modern.
I tweaked the numbers a little bit to fit in 2 Auriok Champion and a 2nd Sorin, Solemn Visitor. At some point I'll pick up some Marsh Flats but I'm not too worried about it at the moment; those are a bit pricey and don't seem super important in this deck (unlike my Naya Company deck where you NEED fetches). Tomorrow night is modern FNM at the local shop; I'll probably be playing my Naya Company deck, but it's a small group of us and we test a lot afterwards, so I'll definitely be getting reps in with this deck also. I just finished doing test draws and I really like how the deck feels; I really look forward to trying it.
Hey guys, new to the forum but I've been playing Sisters for a couple years. Here's the WB list I took to 3-0 a local FNM-level tournament earlier tonight (played vs Hulk Footsteps, Amulet Bloom, Janky Mill). Hulk just folded to Auriok Champion, and then Sisters+Mark of Asylum. Bloom was tough, but my opponent was relatively noobish, so I got to steal the win. Jank mill was jank. Let me know what you think!
To explain a few of my choices:
The manabase is still coming together, hence the four shrines and no flagstones. Splashing for souls and vault has helped me a long way against anyone playing Liliana + creatures. I beat someone playing Bloom 2-1 on the back of my Ghost Quarter and Path playsets, although he was relatively inexperienced with the deck, which gives his opponent major points. Leonin Arbiter is maindeck hate against our worst matchups, Tron and Bloom, plus synergy with path and quarter. 3 Celestial Flare for our other worst matchups, Infect and Bogles. Wraths and Return come in vs Elves, Merfolk or any deck that swarms better than us. Everything else is pretty self explanatory.
These two lists look neat. I'm sorry you got a bad night of testing, Xarn, because I think that list could compete in a real meta, as well. Part of me worries about Arbiter, though. I love being able to bring it in against people who fetch, but when you're not mono-W, you're fetching as well. Plus, a Path against you that you can't pay for is some shocking tempo loss. Every so often, it becomes beneficial to path one of our creature to get Thune mana, and this prevents that. I never liked him when I played with him, but I'll be interested to see if he does better for you.
The Karlov spoiler has me interested in playing some Sisters for a bit, so I'm sleeving this up for FNM and will post results:
Sideboard is still a draft, as is the mana base (I seem open to a nasty Blood Moon; a problem I have a lot with Martyr/Proc) but I'm excited to see exactly what B/W can do. I may drop one of the Honors for a 23rd land, as well. If you're in Black, Extirpate is ridiculously awesome tech against Tron. Turn one Ghost Quarter, turn two Extirpate the Tron land for the win.
I agree that Arbiter is a major nonbo with the fetches, and the self-Path, but it hasn't stayed on the table for more than two turns since I added him to the deck (including the four rounds I played tonight). He's a serious removal magnet, and while his drawbacks are significant, I feel he usually hurts the opponent more, or at least keeps the heat off our backs long enough to set up a winning board state. I may end up siding with you, but I'd like to keep testing him and see what happens.
Tonight I went 3-1 against a few actual decks. The only change I made from the last list was to the sideboard, replacing both Stony Silence with Sundering Growth.
Round 1 was a spicy Delver brew that played Terminate and Hooting Mandrills. But Delver < Lingering Souls and Mandrills < Pridemate, so I won 2-0, even after he played out all four Delvers and flipped them.
Round 2 was Mono-U Tron, and I got slaughtered. Locked out by Ugin both games. Game 2 he beat me through a Sundering Growth'd Expedition Map and THREE Ghost Quarters. I couldn't draw my Surgical Extraction, which I have in the board for the same purpose you're running Extirpate, Bobo. Really don't know what to do with this matchup.
Round 3 was a virtual bye, inexperienced player with a non-deck, just looking to play some games.
Round 4 was Jund, and wow does that deck fold to multiple Lingering Souls. Sisters has so much game against Jundy decks looking to grind, with token spells and Heights and Rangers giving us so much anti-grind tech. Our redundancy laughs at their discard, our tokens and Aurioks laugh at their removal, and our life total laughs at their expensive manland attacks. 2-0.
Not sure what I'd like to change for next time. The sideboard feels imperfect, like they always do. Maybe more maindeck/sb hate against big mana decks? What seems feasible?
I played Jund last night as well, and it seems 8 token generators - both of which are bad Inquisition targets - is the trick against them. I opened with path, sister, 2 Lingering Souls and a Spectral and crushed them after drawing a second Spectral.
The rest of my night was rough. Infect, Elves, Twin which ran three Pestermites, and Tron. Not representative, but reminded me that the big problem of this deck is still card advantage. Thoughtseize and Lingering Souls help, but a Wrath effect or Bitterblossom might be necessary.
So I took Sisters for a spin at a tourney with 41 players and a 2nd round bye at Pitt on the line...
Before I tell you what my record was, I want to say a couple things: First, the deck is very good. Second, it needs the right player. I was not that player today, and I will explain why.
Round 1: Infect
After all the gaming I have done, I have never played against Infect with Sisters. Lost game one by a turn (we were both on the turn four clock and he was on the play, one more turn was game over on my end). I took games 2 and 3 handily. (Bobo, I see your recent post... I thought it was an auto-loss for me, until I played several blockers. My opponent scooped one game to Spellskite... I don't feel like it's a great matchup, but I was very happy to win this one).
Round 2: UW Control
DRAW. LOL. We almost did not get to game three. Return to the Ranks would have been amazing...
Round 3: Jund
DRAW. One turn away from swinging with lethal. I think I attacked Liliana once at the wrong time, because that attack was the one attack that would have sealed the game. I actually conceded game 2 because I felt like I had a very good chance of winning the match if we just went to game 3. Also... for Cavern of Souls haters... it came back to bite me big time in Game Three. I had two plains and a Cavern in play during a very crucial turn... and Spectral Procession was in my hand. That would have been a win.
Round 4: Twin
Okay. I played a Twin player I had played against before. I won the first time we played at a big tournament. I was... I was mentally checked out. I had played almost three straight hours of Magic without a break, and I couldn't handle it. I was a poor sport, and even walked a sister into a Snapcaster Mage... it was that bad. I was an jerk to my opponent, but he was nice enough, and I gave him some store credit for putting up with me and forgiving me for being a jerk.
I went home after that. 1-1-2. It was a six-rounder with cut to T8, and there were a lot of burn players I did not get to see. I feel that a player who played a second faster every turn with Sisters would have won all those matches. I had to mulligan only once, ant it was in my last round. I think the deck took a long time to pilot, and I have prized with it at a big tournament before, but lost to myself. With the right player, this deck can do very well. I feel like one of you could do better with the same exact deck at a big tournament. I honestly won't play with another deck now in Modern, unless I know the meta is soft to 8Rack (lol... I know). I don't want to play mirror matches, and I don't want to spend the money on cards like Goyf... I can't find a way to justify for me, though I know it's a great card and worth it.
I have decided on non-negotiable sideboards cards for my version of the deck:
2 Leyline of Sanctity
1 (maybe 2) Mark of Asylum
1 or two Mirran Crusader
2 Spellskite
2 Stony Silence
1 (or 2) Rest in Peace
I brought a copy of Sunlance and brought it in against Infect but did not see it. I think the card would have been good if if I played against Elves, Burn, and would have been good against Infect.
I had Return to the Ranks in my deck until the last minute, and wish that I brought it. One of the big changes I made to my deck was taking out the Archangel of Thune completely... I have never been able to play it consistently in serious matches... I think only once or twice. Great card when I'm playing casually...
You guys can win with this deck. I played against some good players today... and I will tell you from experience, most people who play against Sisters feel a bit awkward because it's just not something they can predict easily. We just had two decklists from players who did well in state tournaments, and I feel like all of you can just take a chance and take it to the next level... I can't play Magic for several hours straight. I get worn down from it. I know how to play this deck pretty dang well, and I am always confident with it... but I lose games to myself. The deck has a lot going for it and a lot of surprises, not to mention an amazing sideboard.
One more thing... Ghost Quarter. The card must be in the deck.
(I would provide my decklist but I don't know how to make it look nice and tidy on here).
I completely agree on Infect, oddly enough. Last night, Double Ghost Quarter almost got me there game 1, but he drew like a boss. Game 2, I only lost because I mulled to five and he top decked an Inkmonth Nexus after I took his only infecter on a Turn 1 Thoughtseize. I think you can win this match up easier than the Infect player expects.
Archangel of Thune turns the Jund matchup big time. Shame you took her out. While she's terrible against Infect, Jund just can't really handle her. If she hits board, you just punch them into a corner no matter what other creatures join her. That's actually true of a lot of match ups. People don't know how to play her, and she's so different than the rest of the deck while still having nasty synergy that people just scoop.
Last night probably would have gone better for me if I had played with the deck recently. Missing triggers, not being used to B/W and trying to figure out if Thoughtseize makes me aggro or tempo hurt me a bit.
(If you want to send me your list, Lion, I can make it pretty for you and then you can copy the code and save it. :))
The one time I played Archangel in a big tourney was against a Jund deck... and yeah, it got me there. My opponent had two Goyfs and it didn't matter. I feel like I want to put the Archangel in the sideboard...
I have one weird land in my deck that probably doesn't belong, but I am used to it now: Fetid Heath, lol. I like it because I am not afraid to play Windbrisk Heights on turn one and then drop the Heath... it's happened to me a few times. But then, I've also screwed up how I tap for mana.
As a BW tokens player looking to build soul sisters, Inquisition of Kozilek can't take Spectral Processions since the mana cost is actually CMC 6.

Yep. That's why I said it's a bad Inquisition target. Souls is bad because they're only getting a 1/2 a card for their card.

Thalia seems not great if you're on Lingering Souls and Spectral Procession. Rule of Law, Ethersworn Canonist or Eidolon of Rhetoric would be better.
I mis-counted my sisters; I do have 4, 4, 2. Sorry about that.
I saw Rain of Gore once in a game and learned about the "may" clause on Soul's Attendant...lol.
