Hawks are actually not the great. I would play Lingering Souls over them any day, but I'm sticking to Mono W. Secure the Wastes can get you something silly like 4 soldiers on T4(against Path). You also don't require coloured mana for x, so Cavern of Souls is far less awkward.
Thanks to everyone who replied to my earlier post, ended up going with the Above list to 3-2 and 8th place.
OK tournament report:
Round 1; Twin combo. L 2-1: Game 1 was pretty decisive with my opponent able to control the board with a turn 1 Grim Lavamancer and finally combo off with Remand backup for PtE. Game two I stuck a Champion and held off the grindy attacks with Snappy and Pestermite Until I stabilised with Athreos and Lingering souls. Game 3 I had full control early but drew too many lands and lost with Lethal on board to Twin with Command backup for the PtE, it was a good game to play with Anger of the gods three turns running keeping me from the win.
Round 2; Burn W 2-1: Nothing much to this game it's such a awful matchup for them post board, especially when they aren't running Pyrite Spellbomb. turn 2 firewalker in games 2 and 3 was too much for him to overcome.
Round 3; Jund W 2-0: Took both games on the back of Lingering souls, the board sweepers would have been devastating for Spectral procession but being able to discard Souls to Lilly and flash them back after a sweeper was great, in game 2 I drew 5 cards off Bob which was too much for him to deal with and came out well ahead on life to the bargain. I finished things off with an Ascendant to the face.
Round 4; Infect L 2-0: Lost both games to Ichorclaw Myr which is annoying, but he sure does make chump blocking bad. My opponent drew protection spells in equal number to my removal so I don't think I could have won.
Round 5; Decepticons; W 2-0: It was a matchup I was prepared for and after boarding in 8 cards my opponents face was pretty resigned. Game one wastouch and go, winning through a double plated Etched Champion with 1 life to spare. game 2 was turn 2 stony silence into turn 3 Kataki and that was all she wrote.
Swords where in for the mirror but honestly I think the B/w one would probably be better and I think I will change that.
I think you need Spellskite in the board. Not only does it hose Infect, it also trolls Twin.
Hello guys I have 2 questions for you:
the first one concern the Archangel of Thune build: is anyone playing this deck consistently? And if yes could you post your list? I really feel I'm missing a bomb in my current ss deck and I feel like I need this cute angel.
Second one is about splashing a second color which would be black: now I don't want to have my ss turn into a B/W token, however I'm really attracted about including Thoughtseize,Inquisition of Kozilek and Lingering Souls. 90% of my ss wins occur through damage in the air and if I can include more flyer that would speed up the process. What do you guys think? Does anyone of you is playing ss with a black splash? And if yes would you mind to post the list?
My idea with green would be to add green to tutor (chord of calling) for hatebears (voice of resurgence / qasali pridemage, spellskite, scavenging ooze) and archangel of thune.
Like I said, I've been very happy with it, but my modern meta has gotten odd. The last two times I've sat down to play Modern, I faced 8-Rack, Goblins Twice, 2 Abzan (Aristocrats and Mid-Range), a jank standard deck and someone who split a dual deck and was playing with Kiora's deck, so not much to talk about other than Abzan, where I won the game on the back of Archangel, a sister and squadron hawks. I would have gotten stomped if she wasn't there for me. That's the exact matchup you put her in for, and she wrecks.
I'll never understand the squadron hawk hate, but I think the token producer from Dragons is an okay replacement if you really hate them. I like it more as a Spectral replacement, but they would have to be spirits for me to play them, I have enough 1/1 ground troops who can't get through.
Honestly, the more I think about it, the more White Sun's and Secure makes total sense with a sisters deck that foregoes the Martyr/Serra plan. You don't even need Rangers and that point, and just go all in on turn 1 sister, turn 2 pridemate, turn three tokens (From Spectral or Secure the Wastes). With Archangel and Honor, this could be fine.
Something like
4 Soul Warden
4 Soul's Attendant
4 Auriok Champion
4 Pridemate
8-9 Token Generators (Secure The Wastes, Spectral, White Sun's in some number.)
4 Archangel of Thune
4 Path
4 Honor of the Pure
23 Lands
That's just off of the top of my head. Seems super fragile, but fun and a little more budget friendly. Maybe even pull out a few of the sisters for more tokens.
I don't know if that's deck any good, but it's certainly a deck. Worth testing if someone pulls the Secure the Wastes and has the rest already (which they should).
I feel that if you are going to ditch the Serra plan then you might as well go red and start leaning into a Norin like plan. With more etb effects like Impact Tremors.
I mostly agree with you, but I think if people want a super budget version of this deck, that's what they should look for. You could even cut the Auriok Champions for Brave The Elements to make alpha swings easier and build that deck for 75-100 bucks, which isn't bad at all for a starter deck in modern. That way you still have a deck that plays like Soul Sisters is supposed to (not that Norin 100 percent doesn't, I just think it's a slightly different, more combo-y plan) and you're not paying more for the all new mana base.
White Sun's Zenith gives you less value than Secure the Wastes. If you want more bodies in play, White Sun's Zenith is just plain bad for the amount of mana spent. Secure the Wastes is as good as it gets and does have a place in both budget and higher budget SS decks.
However, Spectral Procession has a slight edge of making Spirits, which fly and evasion is always a key factor in mid game stale mates.
I would definitely think Secure the Wastes would see play in B/W tokens. 4x Lingering Souls and 1 - 2 Secure the Wastes is not too shabby. Although Spectral Procession will still get first pick because of evasion.
this deck was conceived nearly the moment i seen Collected Company i seen this and thought it was amazing. it should would take the place of ranger of eos. i was always underwhelmed by ranger of eos. ranger of eos can be cast on turn 4 and you search for a sister matyr or assend which go into your hand. then on turn 5 you can play the cards you have searched for, and on turn 6 you can then attack with them. Collected Company play on turn 4(or even on turn 3 withbirds of paradise),look at the top 6 and grab a not only any of the one drop's, but also any 2 or even three dropsAuriok ChampionAjani's Pridemate. the cards hit the field on turn 4 or even 3 allowing them to attack 1 or even 2 turns before a ranger of eos ask yourself if Collected Company were white would you use it over eos, my answer was yes.
main reason for these changes is we all know soul sisters needs something, it is absolutely not a tier 1 deck. my reasoning would be the combo with Serra Ascendant and Martyr of Sands with the Squadron Hawk to refill the hand. this combo is just too limited. so when i decided to cut Martyr of Sands which lead to cutting Squadron Hawk no deed to refill the hand to use the matyr effect. then getting to 30 life just wont be happening so i also cut serra ascendant which removed the combo completely. and i will say the deck seems better for it
well this is my new age soul sisters deck, maybe its just too out their, but i would love any feedback and sugestions
The SS deck I run don't really need Ranger or Eos to seal the game. I only run 2 copies as its has decent pwr/tgh and is able to tutor out the Ascendants if I don't have them in hand.
If you wish to go green, going with Kitchen Finks, Noble Hierarch and Scavenging Ooze seems like the logical move.
However, SS would do better with red (Boros) or black (Orzhov) because you get wider reach with burn or more removal options.
I like this deck but i want to include archangel of thune+spike feeder....Considering collected company can find one of the pieces seems weird not to include 2 1 of's that can just win on the spot. but right now the deck just looks like its not very optimal the souls package is pretty minimal and just looks like youre trying to hate out md affinity/burn, while missing the largest pay off card in ascendant, while it largely looks like GW hatebears. A single e wit might be pretty good and i almost like chord of calling better than lead the stampede and also and going a bit more liberal with some 1 of's to get some toolboxing. Looks interesting to mess around with though.
Hi all! As a mostly passive reader I first want to thank all the people who contribute to this primer. It helps me a lot with deck building. I shared my deck one time earlier (page 47, 27th of September) and I won a Nationals Qualifier with it in The Netherlands! This Saturday I am playing a GPT, and this is the deck I will probably use:
I have tuned the deck a lot the last year, and for me the key things are:
1. The deck is more midrange than other variants, and I like that a lot! Archangel of Thune wins a lot of games, and Ghostly Prison mainboard helps a lot against Twin, Affinity, Merfolk and most of the time against Bogles and Infect (when they don't have a lot of mana, which of course happens often).
2. Ranger of Eos fills the role of tutoring the one off Martyr of Sands and the two off Serra Ascendant, although most of the time he gets two sisters.
3. Auriok Champion helps against Burn, Twin and Junk variants (especially with Tasigur).
4. Ghost Quarter help against Tron (although it is still a very bad match up), and against the manlands from UW(R) Control and Junk variants. A must include if you ask me.
5. Celestial Flare is in the sideboard because of Bogles, Infect and to some extent UW Control. They gave me a lot of problems earlier.
6. Sundering Growth has never disappointed me: it is useful in a lot of match ups.
7. Bloom Titan is a match up that I will just probably lose. I don't see a lot of ways to change that without hurting other match ups.
8. Still considering Spellskite in the sideboard, but not sure.
Short version: Archangel of Thune and Ghostly Prison are key ingredients for me. This deck wins all creature based match ups and Splinter Twin. It has a grindy match up against control decks and Junk variants. Infect and Bloom Titan are bad match ups.
I love bringing in Leyline of Sanctity to stop them from targeting met with Liliana and Thoughtseize/Discard effects. Suppression Field can punish their Ooze and Ghostly Prison makes it hard for them to overwhelm you. If you don't run Proc or something that interacts with graveiard, Rest in Peace is mandatory.
Thank you. Rest in Peace is a really excellent card. I've got a lot of Suppression Fields and I was thinking of swapping out stuff from my sideboard anyways. I don't have any Leylines of Sanctity because that card is, unfortunately, very expensive. However, I think Suppression Field does a good job at stopping Liliana, Scooze, Gavony Township, Stirring Wildwood, and a few other stuff.
For the record, there were two Abzan decks last time I went to Modern. One was a more midrange deck with Liliana, Siege Rhino, and Tarmogoyf. The other had Kitchen Finks and Voice of Resurgence. One of them runs Zealous Persecution so I was wondering if additional anthems would be good in the sideboard.
I started messing around with SS again after some time off. I played the martyr/hawks/ascendant version for a long time but have moved off of it in favor of this version that I feel is more consistent and has more power if the game goes long.
Soul sisters ia a really fun deck to play, I can't stress that enough, is it tier 1? No, but it defiantly has game in modern, and all that means is there are maybe 5 decks that are slightly better over the long haul.
So the main changes are the figure of destiny, ajani and Mikaeus.
The ajani and mikaeus are basically anthem 5 and 6. The hero and mikaeus are both cards you can grab with your rangers in the late game. Figure is a beater you can tutor up after a board wipe is big on the turn he un-taps without conditions like the pridemates and ascendants.
Currently tuning the sideboard, I'm sure leylines and spellskites would be improvments but I'm too cheap to comint the $$ to buy them on Mtgo right now. I would really like a good card for the RWU control match-up, rest in peace was my normal go to just to stop snap-caster non-sense. Right now i'm just putting firewalkers in to jam up their removal a bit, i don't think it's a huge value and overall it's not a bad match-up anyways.
Any thoughts?

Soul Warden dose what it dose, gains life
Soul's Attendant same as above simple life gain
Auriok Champion don't underestimate the power to not be killed. this guy is annoying as hell to burn
Ajani's Pridemate this guy is just power, needs to be dealt with or wins you the game
Birds of Paradise great turn one drop makes Blade Splicer a turn 2 and collected company a turn 3
Scavenging Ooze works great withAjani's Pridemate and has graveyard hate
Voice of Resurgence token life gain into ajani trigger or just a good beat stick token(don't expect him to live long)
Blade Splicer my personal favorite change. i am using this in place of spectral possesion, works with Collected Company
Collected Company picture this, turn 1Razorverge Thicket birds of paradise turn 2 plainssoul wardenAjani's Pridemate turn 3 land collected company into blade splicer andVoice of Resurgence turn 4 land Lead the Stampede+ any one drop. that is a realistic turn 4 win something i did not often get in soul sisters.
Lead the Stampede is in many cases draw 4-5 cards
