I'm not sure but fairly certain that Bitter Ordeal will not work with cards milled into a graveyard. Yes they have a permanent type but no they are not considered permanents unless they are on the battlefield. I don't know if you had some other reason for it (maybe fetches and ghost quarter).

That is correct. Gravestorm only counts permaments put into the graveyard from the battlefield.

I'm wondering about this deck's potential in light of the latest PT results, namely that infect, affinity, and eldrazi decks were at the forefront of the competition. You may be asking yourself how mill could be at an advantage against these decks, and to that I answer Land Removal. All decks lose to land removal, especially Eldrazi, Tron, Affinity, Infect, Burn, & Storm. Decks that don't necessarily die to land removal crumble to the method of removing lands. Enter Surgical Extraction and Extirpate. With a surge in aggro decks, I think U/B Mill is set up to win through keeping opponents off kilter and removing their threats as they are milled if not their lands. Tron and Eldrazi pretty much lose to Ghost Quarter/Surgical Extraction on one of their special lands. Removing all of an Infect player's Misty Rainforests t0 or t1 and seeing their hand/deck in the process with Surgical Extraction could be enough to win you the game (assuming they're running 4 Misty Rainforest[/c]s). Why not capitalize on this land removal theme with mill? It makes Mind Funeral a little better if you remove something they run 4 of! You can keep removing junk until your opponent is left with a defunct, neutered deck!
Anyway, land removal! Decks in today's current meta are very delicate numbers games and balances that can be thoroughly disrupted by changing percentages and odds of drawing the cards your opponents need to win or to at least stay on track. Gaining info on their hand and deck lets you decide what to Surgical Extraction/Extirpate because you can hit their hand for the card too, keeping them down when needed. I'd say that this is where piloting the deck becomes tough, because you really need to make well timed decisions. I'm considering upping the discard spells to keep opponents slow to the kill.
Note that with surgical/extirpate, you search their library, where archive trap requires them to search it.
I feel that with 20 lands, snapcaster and twincast can be very expensive to cast.
I think you also have way too much permission and not nearly enough mill cards.
I think especially in this meta game, bridge is pretty important.
That is true, you can only Archive Trap if they choose to get a land from your Ghost Quarter. I'm talking more about identifying your opponent's deck and removing stuff from it so it won't work long enough for you to finish them out with mill. At this moment in modern, we aren't going up against a ton of decks that run a lot of lands, and extracting/extirpating/ghost quartering what lands they do have may work to stall the game in your favor. If Hedron Crab wasn't so necessary (and adorable), I'd suggest Smallpox to seal the deal, lol.
Hey with the new decks out being rather fast I am thinking more darkness and crypt incursions main board. Also having jace's phantasm as a blocker is great. Here is my list. Thoughts?
// Deck: U/B Mill (60)
// Lands
2 Bloodstained Mire
2 Darkslick Shores
4 Ghost Quarter
2 Island
2 Oboro, Palace in the Clouds
4 Polluted Delta
1 Swamp
3 Watery Grave
Have had to change up the style of the deck to compete more with fast aggro strategies and Eldrazi. It's a fun list that's been pretty successful online for me. Taking to fnm this or next week after some more tuning.
Holding off on the SB until I'm comfortable with everything in the main. Our initial list has been performing pretty well for our first few drafts of it. It's nothing special either, but it's been moderately effective.
Jace has been okay. Sometimes he feels lacking. I cut him in my list for more removal. I went to a GPT for Charlotte at my lgs and managed to get a 1 round bye. 12 players so not the biggest tournament. 5 rounds, top 4. Played against Fish, Abzan Chord, BG Infect, RG Valakut, Naya burn and Tooth n Nail.
Rd. 1: Fish
G1 I played a t1 Jace's Phantasm into a t2 Glimpse the Unthinkable t2 and sealed the game after two more swings for 5. Opponent only played silvergill adept and a late T3 vial.
G2 I side out 4x Archive Trap, put in 2x Echoing Truth, 1x Disfigure, 1x Engineered Explosives. His hand of 7 ends up being slow. I mulled to 6, he plays lord of Atlantis t2 for his first creature, I disfigured it, he plays marrow next, I path it EoT. Then untap to play a land, Wight of Precinct Six, and a glimpse. He plays a seas and a vial. Next turn I cast breaking and swing for 11. He draws then scoops.
1-0
Rd. 2: Tooth and Nail
G1 I t1 phantasm into t2 glimpse, beat down for game. He didn't see tooth and nail.
G2 and g3 I get t2 blood moon and T3 blood moon. I lost needless to say. I took out archive traps for Spellbombs, Disfigure for Far // Away, and 3 Drown/1 path for 3 surgical extraction and 1 Explosives.
1-1
Rd. 3: Valakut RG
G1 I mill him about 30 cards and he kills me. No creatures in my mull to 6 but solid mill tempo.
G2 I side out 4x drown in sorrow, 1x disfigure, side in 3 surgical, 1x spellskite, 1 Explosives. I have a glimpse, trap, and extraction in my opening hand, I get a free trap cast, catch a Valakut and extract it. Got one out of my opponents hand too. He doesn't have a titan in hand but he drops one t5 and I path it. He scoops after I play two breaking t6 and 7.
G3 i t1 crab, I hit Valakut with an extraction after 24 cards milled by t4, I draw another surgical off of a serum visions and extract a titan. He plays a few more turns and I end up milling him out.
2-1
Rd. 4: BG Infect
G1 I'm on the play and I t1 phantasm, I get t1 IoK and he takes my Glimpse. I draw a crab play it, and mill him 6, beat 1, pass. T3 I draw a disfigure and mill him another 6 with my fetch and commenced the beats with Phantasm. He played a phyrexian crusader a turn too late, luckily he didn't see my disfigure.
G2 I side out 4 Path, 1 Wight and side in 1 disfigure, 1 far // away, 1 Spellskite, 2 Echoing Truth.
T1 I get IoK and lose my Glimpse, he sees archive trap and doesn't use his t2 verdant till t4, I mill him 25 with a crab and 2 breaking, then get my archive trap for a total of 38. He plays a crusader on his t4 and I drown in sorrow t5 after chumpng with my crab and sitting on a disfigure. He doesn't see another critter before I get a hard cast trap and 1 glimpse off.
Rd 5. Abzan Chord spike feeder combo
G1 I'm on the play and keep a hand with crab, sorrow, disfigure, breaking, and 3 land. T1 crab, he plays a t1 birds, I disfigure, play marsh flats and commenced the mill. T3 I slam a wight, who is a 6/6 after another 6 milled from crab. He plays a spike feeder and has a couple other creatures out. I sweep with drown in sorrow and wight gets through and he only plays a birds before wight kills it and him.
I have to mull to 5, not the best hand but I had removal. I kept him off combo for a few turns but he got me.
G3 I get the beloved t1 phantasm into t2 glimpse. He gets pathed T3 and I play a Wight who is a 4/4. I cast a breaking to make wight a 9/9 and just commenced the beats. A drown in sorrow cleared the field and wight took over.
Top 4, we decide to split the 200 total prize support and all take 50. Only two people plan on going to Charlotte, my self and another, our opponents scoop and we play for the bye.
Finals: Naya Burn
G1 on The draw, I get burned out fast, I had a solid hand but weak against Naya.
T1 I phantasm and draw my spellskite t2. T1 he suspended rift bolt. I slammed the spellskite and beat for 1. T3 I hit a glimpse and proceed to beats for game.
G3 I keep a hand with wight, drown in sorrow, Dispel, trap, and 3 land. T1 he slams guide I reveal a land, t2 I draw a disfigure and pass. I get to Dispel Boros Charm and disfigure guide after I reveal another land AND milled him 13. T3 I play wight and cast a serum visions and draw breaking and put a phantasm on top. He plays a Swiftspear aND eidolon then passes. The t4 phantasm sealed the game. I just held wight back to block if needed aND just attacked with phantasm till he conceded.
Not sure if I'll play the list in Charlotte. This list has been great against Eldrazi meta. Not sure if it will be as strong after the ban. -2 effects and Pyroclasm are super relevant at the moment.
Hope yall like the write up. It's been a while since I've kept track of my games but figured the trial would be worth it.

Snap is just way too slow. If our spells were instant he might be more viable but as it stands now, he can't keep up with everything else that's going on in these modern mill lists with them being sorcery speed and 2cmc. We don't delay enough for him to have real value since our spells don't affect the player directly but instead their library. I think Jace, Vryns Prodigy is entirely better and is still a little clunky in the lists.

Fyi, my favorite play is Inquisition, Tome Scour, or Thought Scour T1. Then, Surgical Extraction after their draw.
Surgical Extraction is so good... I played 4 in Merfolk, just to try it, and I happened too be playing USA control. I took his Supreme Verdicts and Bolts both games.
I played Grishoalbrand and he Noxious Revival that Enraged guy in response but then I went after Nourishing Shoal.
It's such a powerful card-if you're not playing Leyline of the Void the should be 4-8 in your 75. I'm surprised I dont see more Disenchants.

The Persistent Nightmare card from SOI seems like a sweet addition to this archetype.
IMHO that card is a bit slow. It would be better to snap a glimpse back. 6 mana for 20 milled in 1 or 2 turns rather than 13 mana for 26 milled in 2 or 3 turns and that's assuming they don't have a blocker with power less than or equal to 1 or they have exile or even destroy effect. Exile would stop it in its tracks for recursion and destroy would make you have to pay 5 more mana. It's a very flavorful card but I can't see myself using it for more than at most a 1 of.
