Last few lists I tried were closer to Naya aggro than burn. Figured you guys would have noticed. I'm amused that people say it's good to have discussion about the lists here and yet there seems to be a major push to conform to the consensus on what is "good." I'm just some dude on the Internet, so I'm not sure why everyone has their nose out of joint so badly that I don't like grenade. At anyrate, my point about results is that there are no results. So no one is right or wrong as of yet. So keep doing the same old thing if I care, but to reiterate, I'm going to try something different.
Could have linked it to the actual IQ decklist. Not sure why you didn't. No, that isn't a high level result. IQ are a bit like GPT and PPTQ these days. I've heard of tournaments like with less than 20 people.
This thread discussion is getting kind of pointless. No, I don't agree with the hive mind assessment of Goblins builds. Your tldr essays are not going to sway me. If the builds were correct, than we wouldn't be having this argument, because the facts would be apparent. 20 years of a card being legal doesn't mean it's good. Etc etc etc.
At any rate. Not sure when I'll be testing it again. We'll have to wait and see what the pros come up with. In the meantime, I would suggest that you all open up your minds a bit. I have been accused of not testing some ideas here, but the irony is ripe on that score.
FNM'd last night with gobs. I found Kessig Wolf Run to be an invaluable MVP of the 3 out of 4 games I got to play (I got a bye after losing round one to a Big Money Jund deck).
I found the deck to have a lot of staying power for the late game grind despite not running coco (coco's only going to make sense with a more mid range strategy with all the lords, don't even try it with the faster low curve version of the deck)...the wolf run is amazing in grindy games, very much so when your gobs keep getting pathed and you get free ramp to pump in to it, also makes the math for blocking a bit more favorable.
I modified my list to be more token heavy and dropped the black splash and went no lords no masters, after last night I think I'm going to try to go back to the black splash the next time I play it for 2 spike jesters and 2 terminates, with earwig squad in the SB for removing boarded in sweepers and combo pieces, could see those dudes putting in a lot of work and winning many games post board.
The most hilarious match-up was against skred...I found myself bolting many koths and almost won the game by beating with just one goblin token and a wolf run while dude stalled out, until he got out 3 of those artifacts that gain him life when ever a red spell is cast. My last attempt to push through was to unload my hand of 2 Foundrystreet Denizens, 1 pile driver, 1 mog fanatic, 1 kicked bushwacker, and a lighting bolt to blow up one of his two wormcoil engine tokens...wasn't enough damage to mitigate all the life gain but it made for an amazing board state...until he played an ugin next turn and I took 3 to the face for the kill...magic.
The goblins, they just keep coming, they blow themselves up, they run in to giant beasts and they just don't give a **** because they know they have an army of more little bros running with more grenades right behind em. Had a lot of fun playing goblins, definitely excited to get more familiar with this deck.
Charlotte and Cincinnati are the next 2 SCG Modern events. There hasn't been a large Modern event since Origins became legal, so of course there are no results yet. The only question will be if Goblins has made enough of a jump in power for people to set aside whatever deck they already play. Chances are good that it hasn't, especially if their deck of choice is something like Splinter Twin. The people who are more likely to run Goblins are people like us who just love the little green guys. Burn is a cheaper deck to put together and is top tier, so if someone is looking for a cheap Modern deck, they are more likely to look there instead. Honestly, those are the 2 decks I would be choosing between, b/c as much fun as playing Tron is, I think it has a pretty big target on its head.
Hi guys! I've followed this thread since the release of Goblin Piledriver and getting it as my pre-release promo (I know such a bandwagoner). I had a great FNM with the deck and feel so excited to tell you guys about my 4-0. My list:
Round 1 vs UWR Control I won 2-0. In Game 1 I pushed through a lot of threats and he tried to stabilize with Snaps and Bolts Eventually tapping out for Verdict which gave me the chance to finish him with a hasty Chieftain and Grenade. Game 2 goes pretty much the same way, I just run all over him and again Grenade gets it done.
In round 2 I faced Grixis Twin. Game 1 played out similar to my last match at first until he tries to flash in an Exarch Eot which I Stoke to get rid of it (Really came in handy, I was just trying this card out but instant speed 4 damage worked out) Next turn I get him down to enough life for Bolt and Grenade to kill him. Game 2 went all his way. He drops a turn 2 Dragon's Claw and is able to answer all of my threats. He drops a Tasigur and beats me to death. In game 3 I Molten Rain his land on turn 3 and 4. That sets him too far back as he is over run by Gobos. So I win that 2-1
My 3rd Match was vs Ad Nauseam which I won 2-0. Game 1 he didn't interact so I kill him on turn 3 with double Grenade for the finish. In Game 2 he mulligans down a lot and again gets overrun real quick. This felt like a great match up.
My last match up was against Affinity. In Game one he comes out hard and fast with Plating on Vault Skirge but Mogg Fanatic saves the day and allows me to stabilize for triple Grenade to the face...so epic. Game 2 he again comes out fast with 3 Signal Pests this time. I'm able to defend myself with Searing Blood and Smash to Smithereens until I double Grenade him for the win and an awesome finish to the night.
All in all I'd say Goblin Grenade is the best card in the deck, without it I would have never won these close games that I did. People just don't expect to die when they have 10 life. Mogg Fanatic really pulled its weight in the affinity match and Stoke the Flames saved my butt big time against Twin. Since I only had the 1 copy of Goblin Piledriver I only got to play it once i think and even then it didnt actually help me but I'd love to get more of those guys and see what happens.
Anyway thanks for reading hope you guys like my build. I am certainly looking forward to the next FNM to try and duplicate my success!
Yesterday at the FNM I ran the R/G-List by TreachTV, only replacing the 2 Frenzied Goblin Mainboard with the 4.Fanatic and the 4.MWG and the 2xBloodMoon (40Euro EACH??!) in the Sideboard with Shared Animosity.
mtgsalvation doesn't allow me to post the full report:
"Non Latin Unicode characters are temporarily not allowed." - edit: I figured out, it was Euro-Sign in the first sentence...
Went straight 3:0, raped SummerBloom, Bogles, and a RDW and after all I have to say the list is in my eyes at this moment the most CONSTANT list, no risky plays, just constant goblins in your opponent's face!
(Just saying, I drew Goblin Piledriver 2 times, he had to be answered both times, otherwise I would have instant won, and both times he got answered but won me a turn)
I got 2nd at a 54 man PPTQ with Rg goblins today. I'll work on a tourney report but basically 4-0 in swiss, then 2 intentional draws into top 8. Put me in 4th place with 4-0-2.
2-1 vs UWR control
2-0 vs merfolk
2-0 vs merfolk
2-0 vs scapeshift
Top 8:
2-0 vs lantern control
2-0 vs GR tron
Concede vs scapeshift.
I conceded in the finals because I didn't want the RPTQ invite and would rather have the $100 store credit for second place. The other finalist was on scapeshift and I had beat him earlier, so it would have been a favourable matchup too!

List pretty similar to what others have been running?
I've been jamming games in between other events. I was feeling rather good about the deck and then ended up playing RUG Twin in between rounds and got crushed. Tore up Bant Company, Amulet, and Jund, and then in just three games I really felt like a dog against Twin. That being said, on the play, Foundry into one drops followed by a Piledriver just blew the guy away so maybe the deck can really pull through, but Electrolyze, Bolt, Snare, and Goyf was an uphill battle.

One of these day I have to get myself organizized.
I'm really happy to see more people (BadMcFadden, icehippo, Midn8Walker) perform well with goblins, and here is the deal (relates to what Nevelo is saying): there were no notable results because nobody outside of our playgroup (goblin fans) were playing with goblins in modern. Now, I bet this will change at least a bit, because Piledriver reminds everyone about one of the most legendary tribes in MTG. I believe goblins can be a meta-killer.
Like affinity, modern goblin aggro deck is a linear, balls-to-the-wall aggro deck that can beat any deck, but can also fold relatively easily (I'm looking at you, Electrickery). Sure, it lacks evasion like affinity, or decision making, but it's more explosive as far as attacks go (there is no haste around in affinity). Either way, it has some burn/reach as well, so can deal with low life opponents with spells. All in all, I believe good times are ahead for us!
Goblins will always be at a disadvantage against Electrolyze. The deck was miserable in the TC metagame because everyone was packing Electrolyze and Forked Bolt and Anger of the Gods to fight UR/Delver. Now in the heavy Grixis/Terminate/Kolaghan's Command metagame, decks are much slower and there are far fewer Electrolyzes running around, which gives us room to operate.
I've come around to the G/R version after playing mono-red for years now. A week of testing with Atarka's command has convinced me: That card is bonkers in this deck. The +1/+1 mode makes Command a "Lord" as well as a burn spell / anti-lifegain tech in this deck. I attacked an opponent last night with 4 1/1s while he was on 14 and feeling quite safe. He declared no blocks, which let command do 7 damage and I had the bolt to finish him on the spot. It's worth the hassle of the manabase and i'm 3-0 in matches against Naya Burn, so the pain from the manabase hasn't ruined the burn matchup the way I'd feared it would.
I like it BadMcFadden good job, I agree with your final conclusion. Even with piledriver the deck may get to tier 2, if we are lucky. But it's still not powerful enough to take on Control and still has trouble with certain styles of twin.
We can wait for the next set or keep practising. I'm sure someone is going to break into a piledriver style deck real soon.
I have been testing with a modified version of TreachTV's as well as FTW1987's CoCo Goblin Puffs. So far the Treach's list has had far more success, but FTW's is just a really fun deck to play. Collected company into two piledrivers with a chieftain and loyalist on the board was my highlight. Either way both are good lists. But, I have still had trouble with them.
I'm going to come up with my own white list and post a sample of it, see where it goes.

Hello, long time lurker, I have played goblins since the start of Modern and long before that. I have tried a lot of variants and a lot of cards, this is so far the best brew I have played. Mr Piledriver seems to be the boost that was needed (I am happy I kept my playset). I want to share this list with you.
I preferred Stoke the flames over grenade because of two mayor advantages I see in stoke; Convoke, and instant Speed it’s nice to convoke with one or more Mogg Fanatic in play then sacrifice the fanatics for the last points of damage all with tapped lands, or helping in Blocking situations.
It also helps with the “Drawback” of Goblin Rabblemaster
Hey, so I usually play Burn and I'm looking to play something a little different and Collected Goblins sounds like it might be a cool idea. Anyway I was hoping I could get some advice on my list before I shelled out for the cards I'm missing.

Either way I was just quoting something you had stated before, the newer versions are more Naya aggro I agree.
In the end, you are right, it is only the internet. So lets stay on topic from now on than.

There are some results, though. It's not like the deck has never placed at all. Search for Goblin Chieftain here: http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/index.php?format_ID=28 Adjust the date accordingly to catch Justin Perkins' list from last year if you want.
Point still stands that the deck won't be better than naya burn when built as a worse version of naya burn.
