Small Modern tournament last night. Had about 25 players. I ended up 2-2. These were my match ups for the evening.
2-0 vs. Amulet Titan
0-2 vs Valakut
2-0 vs U/W/R Control
1-2 vs Dredge
Against Valakut, my opponent lucked into the cards he needed in the first game and I wasn't fast enough to kill him. Second game I saw no SB cards and was getting hosed on mana. Against Dredge I got the first game pretty easily, but I didn't see any of my SB cards in game 2 or 3 and I couldn't keep up with spot removal. I feel that I played pretty well, but I need to make some store specific tweaks to get the deck running how it should. I picked up some more Spirit Link and Cartouche of Solidarity and will probably go down to 2 Leyline in the Main and one in the SB. In their place I added 1 Cartouche and 1 Spirit Link. I may even go for Unflinching Courage if those cards aren't enough.
Gearing up for SCG regionals Chicago this weekend. Thinking about what a good composition might look like.
Planning on running 2 plains and 1 forest to fight back a bit more against field of ruin.
I have been testing 2 keen sense but not nearly enough. I think I am going to run a fun-of. I have found it tends to provide false hope in the UW control matchup but cards are cards and I want all of them!
4x Leyline in the main seems to be a valid consideration w/ burn and jund on the rise. But it also seems like not-the-worst time to have access to some path in the main. Not sure where to go here as to me these cards are sort of a binary. For instance, path would be way better against spirits. Both suck against WU control.
As for the sideboard, I am off of Tocatli for humans atm as I think Humans will be suppressed. Considering trying a worship.
Anyone else seeing success with some new tech or meta positioning?
Edit: looked over a bunch of burn lists on mtgtop8... is it true that burn players are getting off of sideboard destructive revelry / deflecting palm?

Goodluck, my friend; look forward to hearing how it went. In regards to Leyline, I'm currently playing x3 main and x1 in the side along with x2 MB Paths. I run Burn on occasion and try to stay within the loop, but I'm not aware of anything that would cause a significant number of Burn pilots to ditch Revelry/Palm, especially both of them. I could see Revelry if the archetype is moving away from Naya to Boros, but Revelry is pretty much the reason why most Burn has been Naya in the first place; Atarka's Command is fine and all, but if DR didn't exist, Naya burn wouldn't even be something I'd consider. As for Palm, I'd only ditch it if I were going mono red as it's a great card that single-handedly win games. Absolutely hate it as a Bogles player.
Spiciest tech I've seen lately was Triclopean Sight; had no idea the card existed, but it was played as a one-of in a list that placed 7th in a PPTQ and I've had a blast testing it out in my build.
On another note: For those of ya'll who don't play Gaddock Teeg for budgetary reasons, you should be able to snag them for cheap once UMA starts getting opened. The last 12 months have definitely been kind to us when it comes to reprints; before they shot back up to ~$60, Horizon Canopies could be had as low as ~$28 in the weeks following IMA's release. Depending on how many copies of Teeg one decides to run (usually 1 - 3) and assuming they fall to ~$10 after being reprinted at rare, you could've built the deck from scratch for 50% less than it would've cost pre-IMA. I just find that fascinating. I sold my FS Canopies prior to IMA and bought back in once they bottomed out; I'm looking to do the same with Teeg except swap out my Lorwyn copies for Judge Promos/UMA foils if foil prices end up taking a sizable hit. I'd love to have a play set of foil Bogles, but that likely won't happen until/if it gets reprinted in a set with foils.
Yikes. Got hammered at regionals.. and I don't mean drunk. My problem was Spiritdancer. She's starting to feel like a bit of a win more card. Two or three years ago I feel like there was a decent chance that removal spells were boarded out and Spiritdancers was amazing.. now the absolute best I can hope for is to draw a card off the aura cast trigger and control another creature to attach the aura to. I like ledgewalker alot but as tournaments progress and the lesser decks/players are weeded out, it's too slow. The deck obviously mulligans alot and being forced to keep a one creature hand with Spiritdancer is not good enough. One bolt, path, push, decay, trophy and it's over. Good thing those cards aren't popular or anything, ha. It's like bogles entire strategy is to blank the opponenets cards and I'm letting them off the hook by playing something to sink their cards/mana into. I've tested Ledgewalker for 50-60 matches or so but I'm going to revist it and see how it does. Maybe a 3/1 split with Spiritdancer. I'm fine with being a bit slow and losing.. I'm getting reeeeally sick of getting blown out with Spiritdancer draws.
I realize that Kor Spiritdancer lets cards "come alive" for opponents with those types of cards, but it can be worse without Kor Spiritdancers. We need that card to beat tough matchups that have no interaction like Ad Nauseam, KCI, and Storm. We need the turn 3-4 clock. Also against decks with removal, we can often stick a Totem Armor on Spiritdancer to make it tougher to kill because our opponent has to use mana to answer the Bogle. Sure, there are always hands that have only Spiritdancer and winning those in some matchups is a "fool's errand," but the card is necessary in Bogles.
I think we've all been there with Bogles. There's always frustrating moments with the deck, especially those moments in highly favored matchups where the deck just...fails. I think no matter how much I played Bogles, the highest percentage that I could get with the deck is high 60s. Most other decks that I could have mastered, I'm pretty sure I would be in the 70% range, but this deck just has...variance.

Bummer. I hear you on Spiritdancer though. Personally, I run a 2/2 split of her and Ledgewalker with a third Spiritdancer in the SB, depending on the expected meta; you're correct that Ledgewalker is slow, but I've found the built-in evasion to be worth it and I feel better about running only one Spirit Mantle, allowing me two extra MB slots vs when I'd previously run x3 Mantle.
Yeah, for sure. It definitely is the nature of the deck. I just haven't had the spiritdancer be so bad for such a long period of time. I'm sure a lot of it is luck. I personally haven't stuck that thing in months without it being immediately incinerated. And it doesn't kill on turn 3. It attacks on turn 3. You need a decent curve of auras to kill with it on 4.. and that's uninterrupted. I'm not doubting its place in the deck I just think there are definitely metas where a split with Ledgewalker might be an option. I also bring in a ton of sb cards against most of the non interactive decks. It probably loses more value there than it would normally. One thing is for sure, the days of playing that card and the opponent not being familiar with it or not recognizing its power are long gone!
Hello, if it's not too much trouble, could you share your list ?, I've been playing bogles for a few months, but lately I do not get good results, I'd like to know yours to see what changes I could make. Thanks in advance.

Hi everybody. I’m seeing Dromoka's Command played more, anyone playing this card like to explain why this card is so good and worth including in the main board?
Hi everybody. I’m seeing Dromoka's Command played more, anyone playing this card like to explain why this card is so good and worth including in the main board?
I'll often run 1 or 2 copies in the SB, but I'm also puzzled to see it in the MB of recent tournament lists. The reason to play it in the first place is b/c of its versatility, so I suppose that could be a simple answer why. It's a way to deal with Blood Moon game 1, efficient creature removal since our Bogle is almost always the bigger creature on the field, and can foil a Deflecting Palm or Grapeshot.
On a similar note, it appears Open the Armory has gained some favorability again; a lot of those same lists that have D Command have OtA as a 2 of MB. OtA always looked so good on paper, but never really panned out in practice; aside from 1 of auras that one might want to tutor up depending on matchup (Spirit Link), OtA is almost always going to be used to fish for a Coronet. The problem with that is we need access to 3 white mana and 4 mana total in order to play both on the same turn. I think a case can be made for OtA in decks that play a lot of 1-of toolbox auras, but there's no benefit to be had by jamming it into a typical decklist IMO.

Mostly I think it just comes down to that the first 57 cards of the deck are a lot more important than the last 3. As long as you have the core of the deck the final few choices are only going to make a marginal difference and it's possible to win with worse variations of a deck. As this was a team event it's hard to know if he even won a lot. What we can see is that the the normal "5th removal spell", Dismember, was unavailable as one of his teammates was using it. In general I find Dromoka's Command fairly terrible as it's completely unreliable in the matchups where you need removal the most. You cannot guarantee that your creatures are larger, it doesn't exile and having to hold up 2 mana instead of 1 is also a huge downside. The flexibility of countering a bolt or killing an enchantment would only make it worth running in very specific metagames.
Open the Armory is awful in Bogles. The extra 2 mana to choose an enchantment from your deck make pretty much every choice terrible. If you want a slower powerful enchantment, which is pretty much what it is, you should be running Unflinching Courage instead. The best reasons to be running Open the Armory is probably the possibility of including Gelid Shackles and Wheel of Sun and Moon as fetch targets, but he's not even doing that so not sure why he's running it.
What do we think about Stubborn Denial? Splashing blue has always seemed unnecessary and tough on the mana base, however, a random IQ winner ran 4 in the mainboard with 2 Spell Pierce in the side. This seems heavily meta dependent if he expected lots of UW Control/Miracles as it seems good to counter Terminus and Settle the Wreckage. Those cards really wreck us and we don’t have much of an out to them besides Gaddock Teeg which they can remove or counter easily. I suppose it could also be useful against Tron as countering Ugin, the Spirit Dragon would be nice since that card pretty much says Tron player wins the game.
Anyway, thoughts on this?
You would probably have to cut Spirit Mantle or Path to Exile. I could see trying it, especially since Blood Moon is down to nearly 0 play (it's just too slow in this format). Do you have the IQ winner's list by chance?

One thing I'd be wary of is Thing in the Ice. It turned an easy matchup into a nightmare for us. I would like to have 4 Path to Exile and probably even 1-2 Dismember in the SB for that card. Maybe that's overdoing it since I haven't played actually played Bogles in a while, but I feel scared of it. It flipping is GG for Bogles. Scoop it up time...

Hello. I'm the guy that played the Bant Bogles deck at the IQ. The region I played in was rather infamous for a large number of Tron players and a few Storm players. I wanted the Stubborn Denials as it seemed the best answer really for Ugins and Karns from Tron. Of course, this time around, I saw no Tron whatsoever... Also, the deck was built to be a bit more budget friendly. I had been gathering pieces for over a year, and couldn't afford some things like Horizon Canopies and some other things that probably should be in the deck. Here's a slight Tournament report, as best as I can remember, and hopefully it will give some insight into the deck. Granted this tournament was about... 3 weeks or so ago now.
Round 1 vs Red-White Enchantments W 2-0
I know the guy playing this homebrew deck, he's a good friend. I had helped him test the deck a few weeks before the tournament. It was RW that wanted to establish the Solemnity and Phyrexian Unlife lock and then kill you with Enduring Ideal fetching up things like Form of the Dragon. Game 1 I killed him on turn 3. I sided out the Path of Exiles and Spirit Mantles for Spell Pierces and Natural States since I know he's playing no creatures. Game 2 was slower than game one, thanks to his Porphyry Nodes, I had to let a Bogle die, let the Nodes kill itself and then work to suit up a Scout and then one on turn 6, iirc.
Round 2 vs GW Bogles W 2-1
Game 1 was incredibly close. My opponent went first and we traded blows with Spirit Mantled creatures, Stubborn Denial came up huge, countering a Rancor to prevent him from having the last point of damage to kill me and I killed him on my crackback swing on turn 4. I sided out both Path of Exiles for the Natural States. Game 2 was a rout, he suited up a bogle early. I hoped to put a spirit mantle on my own bogle to stop the bleeding, but then he topdecked his own mantle for lethal. Game 3 showed the power of Kor Spiritdancer, with both of us siding out our removal, I was free to suit up the Spiritdancer, her ability making her much larger than his Bogle. With Coronet and a couple other enchants on her, I was healing for more damage than he could deal and won the race.
Round 3 vs Bant Spirits L 1-2
Game 1 I feel like I misplayed. He played a Drogskol Captain turn two with the aid of a turn one Heirarch and I focused on suiting up a bogle instead of killing the Captain with my Path. He then played a Phantasmal Image and a bunch of other spirits and I was swarmed after that. I needed to see a Coronet to have a chance to stabilize, but it never happened. I sided out three Stubborn Denials in favor of a third Path and the Natural States (for Aether Vial). Game 2 Bogles did their thing. I got off to a hot start with Scout into Rancor plus Ethereal armor, and he couldn't play enough guys to recover fast enough. Game 3, he got to go first, I managed to kill a Captain before he could copy it, but he still had a ton of other lords, again I found myself needing a Coronet to stabilize and never found it.
Round 4 vs Jeskai Control W 2-0
This was the matchup that Stubborn Denial was MVP. In game 1 it countered a Settle the Wreckage as I was swinging in for lethal with a souped up Bogle, Also of note, the 4 basic lands came in handy as he Path of Exiled two Spiritdancers and then tried to Field of Ruin a Hallowed Fountain to knock me off of blue, luckily I had that basic Island to fetch up. I sided out the two Paths for the Spell Pierces. Game 2, my hand was light on enchantments, holding only a Curious Obsession and an Ethereal Armor along with a Bogle. Luckily that's all I needed as I spell pierced a Cryptic command, Denialed another one, and then Denialed a Settle the Wreckage over three consecutive turns to lock up the win.
Round 5 vs Dredge W 2-0
I don't think this is a matchup that the deck can lose, to be honest. He did all the stuff that his deck was supposed to do, but I literally didn't care. He summoned all the Bloodghasts and stuff he wanted, even hit me twice with Creeping Chills in game 1 and he was still dead on 5. I sideboarded out 3 Denials for 1 Path and 2 Rest in Peace, and in game 2, he got stuck on 2 while a suited up bogle ran him over.
Round 6 Intentional Draw
At this point, I got paired up against one of the two 4-0-1 players and could ID into the Top 8, so I did.
Top 8 Scoop
After a discussion with the judge, the top 8 decided to split the money and play only for the invites. My opponent apparently didn't care about the invite and so he scooped to me to give me a free pass into the top 4.
Top 4 vs Humans W 2-1
Game one felt like standard Bogle stuff, I came out strong and swinging fast and managed to hit a Spirit Mantle so he couldn't chump block my guy and the game was over on 4. I sided out three denials for a Path and two States (again for the Aether Vials). Game 2, my back was broken when he landed a turn two Meddling Mage naming Daybreak Coronet while I held two in hand. I tried suiting up what I could, but that plus sideboarded Knights of Autumn left me with little to work with and I got ran over by Mantis Riders. Game 3, my opponent again named Coronet with a Meddling mage, but luckily, this time I didn't have one in hand. I got to suiting up. I had a Curious Obsession nuked by a Knight of Autumn, but on my turn 5, my opponent was at 12, and I managed to play enough enchantments, that even though he flashed in another knight of Autumn to blow up an Ethereal armor, I still had exactly enough damage to kill him on that swing before he killed me the next turn.
Finals Scoop
With both of us getting an invitation regardless of outcome. I wanted to play the game just for bragging rights, however my opponent had a two hour drive home and wanted to get on the road, so he scooped to me.
I'm going to run Bant Bogles tomorrow at FNM using that list. If it goes well I'll let you guys know.

Yes, it was as you say. In theory Bant boggles could have been good. However, UR phoenix with Titi was auto-lose. Won a few games but lost overall, deck didn't feel too strong IMO, at least for this meta.
Playing bogles again just reminds me how often we have to mull to 4 or 5 for a playable hand... Anyway, until people stop playing UR Phoenix I can't recommend any kind of Bogles deck at the moment. Feels bad man

I think phenix deck is good but not that overpowerful agaisnt bogles as some people are saying. That´s why it´s important to use 4 path and 1 command in the maindeck, so we can deal with an early thing in the ice.
How about the sideboard guys. I think at the moment rest in peace is more important than stony silence. I always have problems against tron. I fell I am always oversidebording in this match. Tell me what you normally do

Anyway, thoughts on this?

I appreciate it. I've always wondered about Bant Bogles in practice. I've never done it or Aura Swap, despite having all the cards. I just didn't have the guts.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Round 1 vs Red-White Enchantments W 2-0

How about the sideboard guys. I think at the moment rest in peace is more important than stony silence. I always have problems against tron. I fell I am always oversidebording in this match. Tell me what you normally do
