If I understand correctly, though Seth Manfield won the World, the best deck at Modern was Living End (4-0), with Manfield's Bogles finishing (3-1).
About Kor Spiritdancer, I have mixed feelings about her. She is indeed very vulnerable to most of the removals played in the format. But the draw she provides is quite useful and she can com "form zero to hero" in a single turn. Also, with proper timing and a Umbra you can make it more resilient. I often side her out against decks full of removals (assuming I have useful cards in the sideboard), but she's often useful while in the maindeck
I've a slot in the mainboard available. My meta if you like is a non sanctioned twice monthly event where twin, aggro, burn, and infect are main opponents and Ad Naeuseum and Affinity. I'm going to the WMCQ to test it out - hoping for a positive record. So, in terms of specific match ups, what should I be looking out for?
Comments on the:
Land/mana: If you can get a hold of Wooded Foothills (2x-4x), Razorverge Thicket (4x) and complete your Horizon Canopy, things will be easier.
Creatures: 15 creatures is ok I guess, still prefer the standard 13 creature count since it helps us provide more slots for our auras.
Enchantments: Reduce the Keen Sense to a maximum of 2x, add more Hyena Umbra. Try to include 1x Spirit Link, it really does wonders.
Instant/Removals: Path to Exile is enough. Selesnya Charm and Dismember has got to go.
Sideboard: If you aren't life-gaining fast against them, Creeping Corrosion will seriously not help you in Affinity match-up, too slow. Nature's Claim is better and can help you gain life when used against your own Rancor in certain situations.
Hey guys, I got the day off work last Friday and was able to attend FNM for the first time in quite a bit. Since the previous time I went, I've been toying around with less spiritdancers, upgrading to a playset of canopies and some other goodies:
Long story short, I dominated the majority of my first games, but struggled against Burn, Storm, and Living End during games 2 & 3. I couldn't draw an answer for Eidolon of the Great Revel and my graveyard hate was quickly taken out by Destructive Revelry and other removal. I finished the night 3-2 my first time running the deck and that was without the canopies, so I don't know if it was just an unlucky night or if my deck/sideboard isn't well suited to my meta. The majority of build played in my meta are: Burn, Living End, Twin variants, and infect. Any reccomendations for sideboard answers to these decks? Or ways that I can tweak my main deck? I always tend to run 65 maindeck cards because I have difficulty deciding and like to have options; does an extra 5 cards really have that much impact on consistent draws? Once again, thanks for the advice, fellas.
...The majority of build played in my meta are: Burn, Living End, Twin variants, and infect. ...
IMHO, I would instantly do away with Mana Tithe, Silhana Ledgewalker and Unflinching Courage and bring in a 4th Path to Exile, put the 2no Spellskites in the main, and something like Valorous Stance to the main. Paths and Spellskites to give play against Infect, Paths to get that pesky Eidolon or Spellskite out of the way ASP, Valorous Stance works against both decks Twin and Infect.
That frees 2 slots in the sideboard, for a 3rd Leyline of Sanctity and another Rest in Peace or Graffdigger's Cage. Not sure what more you can against Living End, if it proves impossible, maybe something like Tormod's Crypt ? You could try something like Silence but not sure what good it would do since you would need a lot of slots reserved to it. You can also try a sweeper but again, maybe not the best option.
So bogles won worlds! Go bogles! What does this say about its place in the meta?
Absolutely Nothing. Worlds is a Competition with a really small meta where the "I use a deck to surprise my opponents" factor is high.
1 Splinter Twin, No Tron in the competition. It's funny and make us happy to see our deck winning this competition but that's all.
...
I see the glass half-full. The decks present were : Afinity (6), Living End (4), Bogles (3), UW Control (1), Junk (1), Jund (1), Merfolk (1), Twin (3), UR Storm (1), WB Tokens (2) and Burn (1).
Meta might be small, but its a lot more diverse than the ones some people play into. Heck, the meta is almost a representation of the top decks in MTGO. And Bogles came out on top.
To put into perspective, if this was Amulet Bloom there would already be 2 more pages on the ban thread.

The worlds meta is not at all in any way a representation of the top decks on MTGO. 16.7% living end and 12.5% Bogles are extreme overrepresentations and 25% affinity is also a lot higher than on MTGO. The worlds metagame consist of a handful of teams that chose a single deck based on what they thought other teams would bring.
"Bogles came out on top" - these are the total stats for decks played by more than one player:
So a 33% win percentage is coming out on top? The truth is modern was 4 rounds out of 16 and the player who won the other 12 rounds happened to play Bogles in modern. He had the margin to go 0-4 with bogles and still win, would you still say "Bogles came out on top"?
It's cool that several players chose Bogles for this tournament and it certainly validates our opinion that it's a reasonable choice in the right meta, but it doesn't really mean anything in either direction. If anything the increased popularity of Affinity is the good thing rather than the showing of Bogles.
I believe Bogles is a nice choice for a short tournament where every victory matters (not just finishing 1st). It is a deck that can be easily broken with the proper answers (Spellskite, Blood Moon, Liliana of the Veil, Engineered Explosives....), but left uncheck it can win games pretty quickly.
I guess Dromoka's Command is a way to try "new" things in a deck that rarely gets something on new sets. It is the best answer to one of the most annoying SB cards against us (Deflecting Palm). This alone is not enough a reason to include the card, but it is so versatile that it might work. It is not as good as any aura we can play, but it is rarely a dead card. Sometimes I feel that I have to commit so many slots to pack anti-SB-cards stuff that the deck loses explosiveness. Dromoka's Command is not as good removal as Path and is not as good aura as <cardname>, but it is average in both roles.
I've taken a lot of it on-board, and the list I'm going to the WMCQ with is as above.
I'm not sold on Path, because it doesn't have the flexibility of Charm and giving an opponent a land is always risky business. That said, losing the Charms for the Rancors still gives me the trample access. So we'll see how it goes (obviously, more enchantments = awesome too).
I have held off against Affinity enough to Creeping enough times to feel it's the better choice over 1-3 spot removal spells. With the addition of the link now too it should work nicely. Failing that, I may make a last minute switch between the Gutturals and Suspension Fields...hmmm. Too late now!
Good luck, those extra 2x Forest and 2x Plains instead of a Razorverge Thicket set will definitely be a setback on your mana base. I also don't understand why you don't have a Hyena Umbra aura in your decklist (Nope, didn't count the cards in your deck list, so not sure if you just forgot or you didn't really included it for some weird reason). Keen Sense will be a horrible top deck when you are in top-decking mode with an opponent.
Basic lands vs. heavy
Blood Moon presence is the only reason.
I couldn't get Hyena Umbra to me prior to Saturday, but would look to add 2 to the deck and keep 2/3 Keen Sense over the playset of Horizons (as I'm stretching budget alongside 7 EDH decks -_-)
Well, with your sideboard, you won't be able to play around blood moon. I would suggest to make the Wooded Foothills a set also, lessen the Temple Garden and Horizon Canopy by 1.
Jund/Abzan are indeed pretty rough matchups for us. Lilly, Inquisition, Seize, Abrupt Decay... those things can ruin our plan.
Leylines maindeck can help, but note that this can potentially decrease the deck performance against other matchups. But if your local meta is so flooded with Jund/Abzan, it may work.
Other than this I guess you just have to play around. Always leave an uncracked Fetchland if he can play Lilly on the next turn. She may want to mulligan more agressively to find the Leylines or have at least 2 creatures, but this may backfire.
Well the WMCQ was interesting and fun. Without Canopies and Razorverges, I only saw one incident where I didn't have the mana to play what I needed when I needed it. I traded heavily to get them both, so have 3 Canopies and 4 Thickets.
My problem with the typical landbase I see in these lists is I opened several games with 2-3 basics/shocks and then drew Fetches mid-game. Pulling a land when you need it, knowing it won't produce any mana was infuriating to say the least. Is 4 Heath + 1-2 other shocks pushing it?
This is what I now have in the deck. Adding an additional fetch land, especially losing a land I'd fetch with said Fetch land seems like you're shooting yourself in the foot. Educate me!
Definitely going with 3 Seal of Primordium in the Sideboard over the Corrosions. Spellskite is a royal pain in the bum...
Oh, and lost 2-1 to Merfolk because I had no idea Hibernation was a card...ouch!
I wouldn't worry too much about the fetchable lands. Right now I only play 2 Temple Garden, 2 basics and 1 Dryad Arbor to fetch, so a total of 5 fetchable lands with 8 fetch lands. The thing is, any time you run out of lands to fetch, you already at a minimum have 4 lands in play (3 of each color). This is already enough to play everything in the deck. If you come up against Fulminator Mage or Spreading Seas it may be an issue, but on the other hand you'll probably have a couple of other lands (thicket/canopy) to compensate. It may be annoying to have a fetch land with nothing to get, but do you really need the land at that point?
Stony Silence works against Spellskite and is a lot better than Corrosion against affinity (and tron), so I would really recommend running those. Either instead of the Seal of Primordium, or in addition to them if you skip the Hallowed Moonlight that doesn't seem great.
My girlfriend is having a ton of trouble with Jund. She has recently got the deck, and is actually mainboarding Leyline because the store we go to has alot of Jund/Junk, but is still struggling with it. Can anyone give some advice on the match up(and.or Junk), is it normally just a bad match up? Is there anything else that can be done to try and alleviate her issues with the deck.
ny feedback or advice to pass on to her would be most welcome. I have no real idea, all I suggested was potentially Evolutionary Leap or more creatures(particlarly Kor Spiritdancer(she hass less because of the current removal meta)
I would drop the Dryad Arbor count and up the Silhana Ledgewalker or Kor Spiritdancer and actual land count. Arbor just turns their removal on, and in theory it helps with edict effects she cannot be targeted with leyline on the field, therefore, no need to worry about edicts. Drop them in this build. People tend to play more loosely after mulling aggressively to get to a Leyline because they feel safe. They aren't. It helps here, but not a game winner. Suppression Field may be helpful as well against Lili and enemy fetches, just make sure you don't shoot yourself in the foot with it.
And tell her to play against herself with a digital copy of Jund from tappedout or something. This is how I learned to beat affinity with 8rack with relative consistency. Its tedious, and sometimes mind numbing, but it should help for the tougher matchups. Also, tell her to take notes and bring them with her. I keep notes of my matches in my score notebook and write down about each one between rounds. Its helpful. (Things like, "Watch out for T2 pyroclasm," or "This guy runs Ratchet Bomb in the board - side in artifact hate," "If you don't mulligan for Leyline against burn, you might be sunk," or "#!$!@#!* Dark Tarmogoyf of the Veil $@*#!$!@$!!!!!!!!!! Why don't they ban them all!?!?!" etc. Okay, that last one isn't helpful except maybe to clear one's head and refocus)
And finally, you said that she recently got the deck. It takes a while just to learn how to pilot a new deck. Practice practice practice. Recently on another thread someone who has been playing the deck for a while said 2 years to master that one and get to the ideal win rates. A sample size of 1 isn't great, but he had a point: it takes time. Don't be discouraged and look at every loss as a chance to learn. Tell her to ask her opponents what they thought of her play, and if they think she misplayed at all. Greatness isn't born, it's grown. And things are way different in the vacuum of the goldfish bowl.
I'm aware that GW are the optimal colors for us, but does anybody think the recently announced Lumbering Falls will have a place in Bogles? 4 mana for a 3/3 hexproof manland is solid in itself; consider casting rancor to get a 5/5 hexproof manland until end of turn, rancor falls off and back into our hand, rinse and repeat. I think that hexproof lands could add a whole new dimension to the deck, what do you folks think?

This deck usually runs 20-21 lands. How often do you have 5 or even 6 mana availble to you? And do you really want a land that etb tapped? Dryad Arbor is the only manland viable for this deck.
With the exception of Leyline, there's nothing in my main deck or sideboard that costs more than 3 mana. There have been plenty of games where I'm top-decking garbage with 5+ lands in play; even if I draw an aura that I'm looking for, it'll still likely cost only 1 or 2 to play. I don't care if it etb so long as I hit my first two land drops. It would be a nice option to have.

Oh, and lost 2-1 to Merfolk because I had no idea Hibernation was a card...ouch!
I did warn you about having too much basic lands and lesser G/W land. With regards to the fetches, 6 is optimal, you must remember that the higher the number of fetches we have, the higher the chance to draw them and keep one un-cracked when we need to save our suited up hexproof creature when their is a sac effect (Liliana, etc.). If you have another Horizon Canopy, make it a set and make the Temple Garden only 3x, the draw ability of Horizon Canopy will save you in certain times of need.
I wouldn't worry so much about Hibernation, it is usually a 1 off in their decks. And nature's claim and stony silence is really the way to go vs affinity.
First of all, increase the creature count to a maximum of 14 (4 Scout, 4 Bogles, 4 mixture or set of either Kor or Ledgewalker, 1-2 Dryad Arbor). Return Leyline to SB for a more aggressive hand with a better chance of drawing an aura that helps in killing our opponent and just basically practice more. Against BGx decks, it really helps if you have experience with Bogles as to know what hand is ok and those that aren't, no special trick, just plain experience. I've beaten lots of BGx decks G1 and even after I board in the Leyline, I don't aggressively mull to get them and still win without them.
Round 1 vs. Grixis Control with some rogue choices. I get him in the first game even after he did turn 3 Liliana of the Veil. I rebuilt with another Bogle and got there. In the next 2 games, I kept land light hands and it hurt. I kept a 2 land hand and after 2 Molten Rain, I had nothing the rest of the game. Serum Visions, Jace, Liliana of the Veil, ... this deck has a curve. In the final game, I am about to rebuild after some land screw, but with 3 cards left in hand, he has Liliana of the Veil that he drew and Lightning Bolt for my Dryad Arbor. 1-2.
Round 2 vs. Junk Liege. She mulled to 6 and her first play was Kitchen Finks. I ramped a HUGE Bogle and had Path to Exile for Finks for lethal. The next game is similar, but she has Lingering Souls and Siege Rhino. I have a HUGE Bogle again and Rancor. 2-0.
Round 3 vs. UWR Geist. I win the first game fairly easily with a HUGE Bogle. I make sure I resolve the right Auras and win quickly. In the next game, things are going poorly for me since I kept just Gaddock Teeg in hand (for fun). It got Bolted in response to Umbra. He gets out Resto Angel and is hitting me, but I draw 2 Bogle in a row. He is representing Crytic Command mana, so I wait until I have 2 in a turn. Some Auras get countered, but Spirit Link and others resolve and once I have a Rancor, I have a 5/3 first strike, reach, lifelink creature. He makes the mistake of just attacking with Angel instead of SCM, Geist, and Celestial Colonnade as well. I block and gain life and Ethereal Armor joins next turn. I race easily and find Rancor to boot. 2-0.
I am 2-1. The first round was pretty disappointing, but it happens. If I knew that my first 9 draws were not land, I could have mulled the 2 lander. Oh well...

Oh well...
