I'm probably biased because I dont think Thalia is that great currently to begin with, but I would rather use 3 mana on the other flash fliers and keep Thalia in her 2 cmc spot so she can land and start taxing asap.

Mainly comments about sideboard? Also only things considering in the main is I kinda want another Gryff and maybe Pridemage. I am also iffy on Collected Company. Many games it is an all star using it at instant speed after fetch to get one of our search denial or a Gryff against Twin when combo but the problem is many times I also end up just getting a bird out of it.
My original logic on taking all the 2/1 fliers out of my deck was something as follows:
Number of stars 1-5 are equivalent to how relevant I think the point is.
Weaknesses:
***** | One Toughness: Not only is this a huge disadvantage vs electrolyze or any burn spell it means that it will not be profitably blocking almost anything since three mana (and probably a turn to cast it) for a flash blocker to their two mana or less creature which probably already provided them with advantage elsewhere is terrible.
*** | Tempo: The way I prefer to play hatebears is very tempo oriented and getting ahead in that department allows me to capitalize on whatever hate I have to further put the opponent behind while I present a threat in the form of a clock. For that purpose the birds are terrible. You are spending a significant amount of mana, likely not allowing you to cast anything else that turn, for something that dies to every piece of removal modern plays. The only card I would consider would be Hushwing Gryff as against particular decks (Like CoConFriends) the hate has a high enough impact that if they do not have removal in hand its worth it.
** | Attacking: They can be aggressive given a few exalted triggers but I cannot think of many situations where I would not rather have a brimaz or kitchen finks. Furthermore lingering souls wrecks shuts it down completely.
Strengths:
** | Hate: The good news is that all three of these birds have powerful hate effects that when played against particular strategies can shut them down completely. But given what I view as the downsides the matches where I want them in my main deck or even in the 75 are far and few between.
Those were my considerations on playing x/1 fliers in my hatebears. In an easily predicted meta I think the birds could be applicable in sideboard or even in mainboard if you know what your going to face but in unknown scenes I would just rather have other alternatives that are applicable to a wider variety of decks.
Naturally these are just my opinions on the birds in hatebears, I would love to see contrasting arguments to give me perspective on my logic.
GP Copenhagen Tournament Report from an Oldskool Skrub
Hey everyone! A while ago, some friends asked me if I wouldn't join them on a trip to GP Copenhagen. Having never been to a GP before and wanting to find out what all the fuss is about, I accepted. Little bit of background: I'm a Magic player from the "olden days" who stopped playing during Urza's block, then got back in Mirrodin block, then stopped during Kamigawa block and eventually returned to the game from New Phyrexia onward. Still feel quite rusty playing but hey, baby steps.
The initial deck choice was Wilted Abzan, but while testing I quickly found that it has real issues against Bloom Titan and GR Tron which are popular decks at the moment. Putting three Ghost Quarters in the sideboard helped only marginally and after watching GP Charlotte, I realised that casting Siege Rhinos isn't the place to be right now.
Eventually I decided to go back to Selesnya Hatebears, a deck I played for a bit in my LGS and which I discovered here in this very thread :). All ready to sleeve up the usual 60 with changes to fit the metagame, my eyes fell on Magerithos' post on page 158 where he dropped Wilt-Leaf Lieges and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben in favour of Collected Company. I looked at his build and thought, "why not"? @Magerithos, for the GP I used your main deck (love its construction, it's solid) with just one change (3 Noble Hierarch and 3 Birds of Paradise rather than your 4/2 split) and a few alterations to the sideboard (threw out one Dismember and the two Sunlances in favour of two Mirran Crusaders and a Fracturing Gust).
So how did it go? Well, here is a "high level" tournament report (I had notes but lost them, so a lot of this comes from memory - sorry if things sound a bit sketchy):
Round 1 vs ???
Opponent doesn't show up and after waiting for about 12 minutes, I win by default. Would rather have played, but those are the brakes :(. Even after the whole 50 minutes, I never saw anyone appear at the table.
2-0 "Win"
1-0-0
Round 2 vs Boros Burn
Considering that Hatebears and Burn are relatively fast decks, I still cannot believe we actually went to time :). We were both being very careful, trying not to forget triggers (we did anyway) or play a spell at the wrong moment. My opponent also had a "no show" in her first round.
Game one, I get burnt out and made a foolish mistake, trying to exile a creature with Scavenging Ooze, only to realize I had Path to Exiled said creature earlier :/. In the end, one life doesn't matter much vs Boros Charm. Game two, I Ghost Quarter my opponent's land with Leonin Arbiter out and she never recovered from it. She also forgot an Eidolon of the Great Revel trigger, so I felt slightly less the fool. Guess we were both still "warming up" with our decks ;).
Game three was interesting. As said earlier, we go to time. In my final turn (turn four), I am at 7 life with a Birds of Paradise and Voice of Resurgence on the table. My opponent is at 5 life, has a Goblin Guide, Eidolon of the Great Revel and a suspended Rift Bolt. I draw a Qasali Pridemage, play it and attack with the Birds of Paradise with an exalted trigger on the stack. She can't destroy the Birds, goes down to four life and has no way to get me to zero without killing herself due to the Eidolon of the Great Revel. It's a draw, she smiles that all too familiar "I had you, why did this happen?" smile and we shake hands.
1-1 Draw
1-1-0
Round 3 vs Bloom Titan
Game one, I get to play double Leonin Arbiter which stalls my opponent for a while. He gets to play a single Primeval Titan the "fair" way, but I've got the Path to Exile and get to swing in for the win.
Unfortunately, game two and three are completely in my opponent's favour. He goes double Amulet of Vigor into Summer Bloom into Primeval Titan into Hive Mind with a cast Pact of Negation in response to another spell by turn three/four. Each time, I have only UU2 on the table to pay during upkeep. No Leonin Arbiters or Aven Mindcensors were seen during these games. Ouch.
1-2 Loss
1-1-1
Round 4 vs Grixis Delver
During game one, the opponent resolves a Delver of Secrets turn one, flips it turn two, plays a few spells, then drops Gurmag Angler. I find no decent answers and roll over.
Game two shows how good four maindeck Scavenging Oozes can be. No Gurmag Anglers for the opponent, but he still gets the turn one Delver of Secrets. Unfortunately, by the time he gets to flip it, the Ooze is completely "looze" and I can just stomp on by for the win.
Game three goes very much like game two, except that I have Leonin Arbiter and Ghost Quarter online which keeps the opponent stuck on one land for several turns. Meanwhile I get to develop the board uncontested and take it home.
What surprised me was the low amount of counterspells I saw from the Grixis player. One Spell Snare and that was it. The opponent was probably having a bad draw.
2-1 Win
2-1-1
Round 5 vs Jund
Allow me to take a moment and reflect on my opponent's deck. He (guy's been playing since Beta) ran the most pimped out Jund deck I have *ever* seen. Everything except the signed Beta Lightning Bolts and basic Beta lands was foil and in different exotic languages for each kind of card. Four japanese foil Tarmogoyfs. Korean foil Raging Ravines. Four Russian foil Liliana of the Veils. And so on. Noice.
Anyway, my not-so-pimped Hatebears deck turned out to do pretty well against Jund. Jund tends to grind you out but thanks to Scavenging Ooze, I was able to keep his Tarmogoyfs and the rest of the board under control (Collected Company helped recouping creature loss). Liliana of the Veil was almost exclusively used in tick-down mode, and I always had a dork to feed it. Held back Path to Exile with Aven Mindcensor and/or Leonin Arbiter in play for possible Dark Confidants and that sealed the deal.
My opponent almost couldn't believe that his gorgeously pimped tier 1 deck just got clobbered by 2/2s with abilities. This (and also what you will read in the other Jund match-ups below) confirms what you guys also know: Hatebears is underestimated. People don't test against it a lot. Well, to our advantage I guess :).
2-0 Win
3-1-1
Round 6 vs Orzhov (Abzan?)
I'm no longer sure if the opponent was Orzhov tokens or had green to be Abzan, sorry :/. What I do recall is that game one, he plays discard and a quick Lingering Souls. I draw Scavenging Ooze and get rid of the Souls in the graveyard. He plays a second Lingering Souls and I find Loxodon Smiter. Together with the Ooze, my clock turns out to be faster than his.
Game two, I play Leonin Arbiter and Aven Mindcensor. The opponent stumbles on his land development and I get to Ghost QuarterStrip Mine him. A few moments later, we have about 20 minutes left to relax until the next round.
2-0 Win
4-1-1
Round 7 vs Jund
My opponent is a 14 year old with possibly a great future in Magic ahead of him. Great play, poker face all the time and not afraid to pull a few tricks such as asking me straight out if I am playing Aether Vials after game one :).
Speaking of game one, my opponent plays Liliana of the Veil turn three and ticks her up. I put Loxodon Smiter in play. For a second, his poker face shows a slight crack. "Oh", he utters. We play on, he Abrupt Decays the Loxodon Smiter and ticks Liliana up again. I drop a second Loxodon Smiter on the board. "OH". That's why we play Magic, folks :). These kinds of moments. Of course I get to take it all down.
Game two, he manages to play Jund's old game and grinds me out. I manage to keep his board clean and eventually, we're both topdecking. I draw some creatures to put on the table but he finds Olivia Voldaren which single-handedly takes over the game, as she always does in this type of situation.
The decider, then. It's pretty close, we both get a board going, but I get the upper hand by taking down a key creature with Path to Exile, always holding back a second Path in case Olivia Voldaren shows up again. Not much else to say, except to perhaps repeat that Scavenging Ooze is just a marvelous card vs Tarmogoyf :).
2-1 Win
5-1-1
Round 8 vs Jund
Another Jund player, must have been a pretty popular deck at the GP. Game one shows the power of Collected Company. The opponent removes Leonin Arbiter and Hushwing Gryff from the board, after which I CoCo into... Leonin Arbiter and Aven Mindcensor! This happens again, and for once it's Hatebears grinding out Jund :).
As an aside, this isn't the only time I got to resolve Collected Company. The previous matches saw some CoCo action as well, and I always got the full two creatures from it. Again, great deck construction! However, this is the first match where CoCo was truly instrumental in clinching the game.
Game two boiled down to a Scavenging Ooze vs Scavenging Ooze battle, with the both of us keeping up green to respond to the other player's activations. In the end, I managed to find a Dismember and the opponent couldn't get get the Ooze to a 6/6. After that, I got free reign over the graveyard and that was that.
2-0 Win
6-1-1
Round 9 vs Izzet Twin
Good old Izzet Twin... *sigh*. Game one I have the inconsequential turn three Qasali Pridemage with one mana open against his turn three "Deceiver Exarch tap your land, turn four Splinter Twin" combo. All my other cards were lands and creatures. Yep, it just happens sometimes, gotta deal with it.
Game two was a lot more promising. I sided in Chokes which I never got to see but over the course of the game, I did get to draw Qasali Pridemage, three Path to Exiles and a Dismember. Unfortunately, the opponent had great answers to all of these questions and just kept drawing Pestermites/Deceiver Exarchs to nullify all the creature removal. One Serum Visions later, he finds Splinter Twin and it was combo time with me out of options.
Props to him - he crushed me with surgical precision. No playing mistakes that I could notice. Hope he did well on day 2.
0-2 Loss
6-1-2
Conclusion
The above antics yielded a 168th place - close, so close, but alas no cigar. Still, for a first GP it was fun to at least have an actual shot at day 2 with a "win and in"! I feel I can return to my LGS with my head held up high :). And: Selesnya Hatebears is a deck with serious game. Sometimes, opponents just get lucky but if they aren't, if they have to play it "normal", we can really lock them down and bring all the Tier 1s and Tier 2s in the world on their knees. Thanks for reading and thanks to Magerithos for the inspiring deck list!
PS: Question
Merfolk won GP Copenhagen. I haven't had the pleasure of testing against this deck archetype, but it seems bad for us at first glance. Is anyone who has played Hatebears vs Merfolk willing to share their opinion/experience pertaining to the matchup?
Mind sharing your list? If you're playing Thalia's and CoCo's in the same deck I'd be interested in the list.

I'm really surprised how many people have fallen out of favor of Thalia. I still think she is amazing. This deck runs at most 8 (if your going 4 collected company) non-creature spells which has to be the lowest in the format. Honestly I am probably going to even try the new Pegasus for more taxing also can stack. Thalia just sets so many decks back that I can't ever imagine cutting her. Also with first strike she is one of our best in combat 2 drop.

I went 3 and 2 missing the cut to top 8
First round Faced infect. Got a turn 2 Thalia out in both match-ups not a chance I would have won without her. After sideboard I brought in Choke (this version ran fair amount of islands) had turn 2 choke into Thalia next turn and locked person out of the game completely took just a few turns to bash opponent down.
1-0
Second round Faced Elves. First round just out raced the Elves. Aven Mindcensor and Leonin Arbiter stopped two attempts at getting the +3/+3 plus Trample guy. Second round got him out though and destroyed me, same with the third game. Had no real answers in the side board. Really missed running the Phyrexian Revoker in this match.
1-1
Third round Faced Grixis Control. Lost the first game due to him getting out a turn 2 Tasigur very hard without Path to answer that. I got a path two turns later but he just played another one.. Won the 2nd and 3rd match due to getting Choke out both games along with a Rest in Peace in the third game. Thalia was also an all-star whenever opponent pays 2 just to serrum vision you feel so good. Still not a very good matchup for me but with Choke and Mirran Crusader killed him to fast.
2-1
Fourth round Faced Living End. Horrible Horrible match-up it seemed. I got lucky and won of these matchups because was just to fast. However, I died turn 3 and 4 other games. I got an ooze out to late one game and never saw my rest in peace which is really only way can win this match.
2-2
Fifth round Faced Affinity. First match I curved out perfectly and got Wilt-Leaf out turn 3 and out raced the Affinity deck, first time that ever happened. Didn't even draw a Pridemage. Second game Turn 3 Collected Company into Kataki GG.
Finished 3-2 finished 12 out of 27 missing top 8
Finial Notes Thalia was amazing and I never couldn't cast Collected Company on time. Collected Company is also a very frustrating card.... Two games it straight up won me the game, however, one time only got a Bird, another nothing getting four lands and my other two Company, another just one Ooze... It is a hard card to really count on. I will deferentially be trying a more taxing method with Thalia and the New Pegasus when it comes out and see how it goes. Also I am thinking of maybe testing some bant version with Birds, Nobles, and maybe just few lands be easy to add some blue.
Just a quick summary if have questions about the day feel free to ask.

I feel like that you cannot have the best of both worlds of having Thalia and CoCo in the same deck. It's one or the other.
On other hand, going to my 3-round MNM tomorrow with this list.
I feel that casting Company just to get the right bears is like playing Gifts Ungiven just for value... You can do broken things with it in the right deck, I would rather play it in the Melira deck.
Btw, with the rise of Elves, Merfolk and Grixis Delver, is the third Explosives a must?
I believe WoTC's new policy is to make sure that every color can enjoy the exciting gameplay mechanic of making undercosted dudes and then turning them sideways. Clearly the future of magic.

Given such a major success, I feel like this list needs some discussion. Does anyone have any insight into why Bozhi played the numbers that he did? Most surprising to me is 0x Thalia, 0x Leonine Arbiter, and 1x Qasali Pridemage.

I feel like it's because playing Thalia and CoCo in the same deck is a bit of a nonbo.

Just a quick summary if have questions about the day feel free to ask.
I feel like that you cannot have the best of both worlds of having Thalia and CoCo in the same deck. It's one or the other.
On other hand, going to my 3-round MNM tomorrow with this list.
4 Noble Hierarch
3 Voice of Resurgence
3 Leonin Arbiter
2 Qasali Pridemage
2 Scavenging Ooze
1 Spellskite
2 Kitchen Finks
4 Loxodon Smiter
1 Brimaz, King of Oreskos
2 Hushwing Gryff
1 Wilt-Leaf Liege
3 Collected Company
4 Path to Exile
3 Forest
4 Plains
4 Temple Garden
4 Razorverge Thicket
1 Eiganjo Castle
1 Stirring Wildwood
1 Treetop Village
4 Ghost Quarter
2 Gavony Township
2 Kataki, War's Rage
1 Spellskite
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Creeping Corrosion
2 Choke
1 Thrun, the Last Troll*
3 Stony Silence*
2 Dismember
1 Relic of Progenitus
1 Celestial Purge
*1 of each may become 2 Display of Dominance for one person there has 4 MB Blood Baron of Vizkopa
So the meta there is...
1-2 Affinity
0-1 Grixis Control
1 Grixis Twin
0-1 Scapeshift
1-2 RG Tron
1 Casual Dragon Deck
1 Awkward Esper Midrange Delver Deck (One with 4 MB Blood barons)
0-1 Storm
1-2 Other brews.
Modern:
BR Control
Grixis Bloo
EDH:
Food Chain Prossh
Land Wipe Maelstrom Wanderer
Selvala, Hearth of the Wilds Eldrazi
Btw, with the rise of Elves, Merfolk and Grixis Delver, is the third Explosives a must?
Given such a major success, I feel like this list needs some discussion. Does anyone have any insight into why Bozhi played the numbers that he did? Most surprising to me is 0x Thalia, 0x Leonine Arbiter, and 1x Qasali Pridemage.
Legacy: Strawberry Shortcake, Aggro Loam, DnT+b
Modern: Devoted Karn
Vintage: Survival
I feel like it's because playing Thalia and CoCo in the same deck is a bit of a nonbo.
Modern:
BR Control
Grixis Bloo
EDH:
Food Chain Prossh
Land Wipe Maelstrom Wanderer
Selvala, Hearth of the Wilds Eldrazi
Display of Dominance doesn't do anything to Blood Baron of Vizkopa unless I'm missing something.
