What are everyone's thoughts on the utility lands - Academy Ruins, Inventors Fair and Sea Gate Wreckage.
I haven't experienced a game where Inventors Fair was worth it. I guess I'd go get a plating ???? And just equip to what ever isn't dead yet or a mainland.
What matchups are steel overseer actually good in? I feel he either dies to everything or to slow. I've recently upped to 6 3 drops 4/2 master champion split with an addition of 2 tezzeret and an 18th land. Been running it for a few months and I don't plan on looking back
Good evening again my fellow Phyrexians/Mirrans. So I read the article below a couple of weeks ago and thought I'd try something similar to Andrew Dang's list. Started putting it together today and I noticed Curse of Stalked Prey in my binder. Has anyone been crazy enough to try this thing as a SB option against anything where we anticipate Stony Silence; and what do you guys think about doing this? I'm tempted on the basis that it could do a Steel Overseer impression and grow our fliers
Curse sounds like something. It gives the army a direct boost and is harder to remove. Can be a better topdeck than Overseer in some cases. Might be better in a Frogmite build and combined with driven // despair. Only problem is you need to connect for the counter.
Then again, it is not an artifact tho and we need a critical mass.
Don't think it's an anti-stony silence tech, since shutting down our mana has been a far worse problem than shutting down an Overseer ability.
I meant to try one out in my sb at the last fnm and accidentally mixed a spare copy in with the rest of my deck at my last fnm. So ended up playing affinity with 61 cards mainboard... While I loved Andrew Dang's list, curse underperformed and I was mostly disappointed to see it. Cast it once and it seemed a little too slow for the rest of the deck. I would like to try it in gobots next but I like the idea of having it with frogmite snd driven//despair. I might just try that next Thanks for the feedback and the advice!

An uncontested T1 Steel Overseer ussually wins you the game. When they do answer Overseer, they have less answers for Plating, Ravager or Master.
I perfectly understand a T1 overseer uncontested can win games easily. But that is just starting to feel magical christmaslandy. It's always one of my first out. And if It does survive virtually any other "big" card is gonna win us that game anyways. The only matchups where I miss it is the mirror.
I wouldn't leave home without two copies of Whipflare in my side-board. Two copies of Ghirapur Aether Grid is another essential.
Your mileage may vary. You will have to tune for your environment.
I've been trying Ensnaring Bridge in the side-board. It's probably not a good idea, but it did work once for me. I don't play anything but FNM, and I don't play every week at that, and I have several decks that I play, so there isn't much opportunity for me to test.
What matchup is the Grid for?
It's an alternate win-condition against any deck that will bring in Stony Silence plus it works well against anything that runs tokens.

If you're playing Spell Pierce out of the sideboard, is it better on the play or on the draw? I know controlly cards are typically added on the draw, but Spell Pierce is typically used as a tempo play against control.
Initially, it doesn't seem to have the same utility. It requires mana, which makes it less likely to work under Stony Silence and each artifact will do only one point of damage whereas Ghirapur Aether Grid will do repeated damage with those artifacts.
It's easier to cast and thus quicker, but it just won't do the amount of damage Grid will do.
I'm experimenting a bit, challenging a few long-held traditions just to see where it goes. I want 4x Galvanic Blast in the main deck, and I'm running 4x Bomat Courier as well. That's the only colored mana in the main deck, so it's obvious that the basic land is going to be Mountain.
However, the sideboard has 2x Thoughtseize, 2x Heroic Intervention, and 2x Spell Pierce. Being able to get the right mana for these is potentially problematic. So I'm going to experiment cutting 2x Blinkmoth Nexus to bring the total count of Glimmervoid+Spire of Industry to 5. This also gives me a little bit of insurance in being able to cast the colored spells should my opponent land a Stony Silence (although that's usually game over anyway).
I'm considering that Spell Pierce may end up being so essential to stopping Stony Silence and Chalice of the Void (X=1), as these are probably the two cards in Modern that destroy Affinity more than anything else, that I may end up taking out the Spellskites, which have seen almost no play lately and which have been lackluster when I did play them, for Spell Pierce number 3 & 4.
Okay, I remember this from Grand Prix Las Vegas. Frank Karsten told my friend who plays Affinity to run 4 Master of Etherium in the main board and 4 Etched Champion in the SB. I know things have changed since then, but I don't know how so. Most of this is because I only have play tested Affinity, despite owning the deck for over 2 years. I think I ran it twice at a TNM, going 5-3 overall.
What do you think is the best deck list? And when do you use Master of Etherium vs. Etched Champion?

I play Master main and Champion side. Champs come on for removal-heavy match-ups like Jund or Grixis. I play only three of each as I don't like too many three-drops.
I don't always side-out Masters for Champs despite what I just said about three-drops. I sometimes side-out Steel Overseer first.
Champ is just so slow he has to have Cranial Plating to get there. Master is beefy plus he pumps the team.
Master of Etherium is a lot worse now because of Fatal Push. Too often you're spending your whole turn's mana casting something that your opponent kills at your eot with 1-mana removal.
Actually, I think Fatal Push has really made this deck a lot worse than it used to be. Also the surge in Eldrazi Tron that makes Etched Champion bad. Also Kolaghan's Command is seeing a lot of maindeck play, and Stony Silence is in more than half the sideboards. I'm not really sure this deck should be considered Tier 1 anymore. When is the last time Affinity won a major Modern event, or had significant presence in top 16?

It's always had a presence around Tier 1. Fatal Push is rough for the deck, but there is always a push/pull between being good for Affinity or other matchups. Fatal Push is fatally poor against Titanshift. I feel that Affinity barely beats Titanshift, although it completely 100% depends on what cards are drawn for both players. It could look like a 90/10 or it could look like a 10/90.
Stony Silence has gone down considerably. And I'm not just talking about the price! I just think it's tough to constantly keep some number of Stony Silence in your board when grave hate is also important and it for the most part hits only Affinity and E Tron (Tron, Lantern, and Eggs being scarcely played).
I won a PPTQ this past weekend where I played against a Standard player borrowing Affinity. That says something to the power of Affinity. I guess there's times when you just run over your opponent, they run over you, or you have to make the super technical, smart play to barely eek out a win. That may not appeal to some. I personally don't care, as long as I'm winning.

Don't think I'm on board with cutting Blinkmoths. And I would keep at least one Spellskite in the SB. How is Bomat Courier working for you? As far as the Stony Silence issue, have you tried Hazoret the Fervent? You could also include an additional copy of Aether Grid. Also, what's up with Heroic Intervention? And why Hurkyl's if you're already running 2X Ancient Grudge?

Believe me, it's not something I'm completely comfortable with either.
How is Bomat Courier working for you?
It's great, amd my opponents think so because it's usually the first creature they try to kill.
As far as the Stony Silence issue, have you tried Hazoret the Fervent? You could also include an additional copy of Aether Grid.
The problem with both of these is that it's extremely hard to cast anything other than a 1-2 cmc colorless spell after Stony Silence has landed. It shuts off all the Darksteel Citadels, Mox Opals, and Springleaf Drums. The solution for Stony Silence, if it exists, must be a plan to prevent it from entering the battlefield to begin with. That solution has to be 1-2 cmc because Stony silence is 2 cmc. And it really should be 1-cmc so you can even stop Stony Silence on the draw. That pretty much leaves Spell Pierce and discard as options.
Also, what's up with Heroic Intervention?
It's proven to be the most effective defense against Supreme Verdict. They'll usually tap out to play it ASAP since it can't be countered. I have tried other alternatives, like Thoughtseize, but that doesn't help if it's not in their hand and then they draw it afterward. It's also pretty nice against Kolaghan's Command which I've been encountering maindecked in about 40% of the matches I've played recently.
And why Hurkyl's if you're already running 2X Ancient Grudge?
It's an absolutely blowout in the mirror, usually you can win on the spot if the board state is clogged.
All valid points as far as I'm concerned. I've considered Heroic Intervention, but ultimately it too often ends up being a "do-nothing" card. Imagine a scenario where you get hit with Supreme Verdict, and then after your board is wiped clean, you peel Heroic off the top. I like Sea Gate Wreckage better in this scenario. Also I've noticed a new trend of Claim//Fame being included in some lists, and that even seems better to me than Heroic. I think Hurkyl's on top of two Ancient Grudge may be going overboard, but that's probably a meta call I assume. Anyway, it's nice to see you're trying some off-the-beaten-path ideas!
How has Sea Gate Wreckage been for you? Do you get more than 2 activations? From a CA perspective, Thoughtcast and Tezzerat seem to be other options for CA. But from a utility land perspective, we could also use Academy Ruins and Inventor's Fair.
