I've been looking for a fun deck for a tournament, winded up with this and fell in love. It's pretty fun to see your opponent squirm when you turn the game 180 degrees around in one turn. Opinions?
I like to see Phantasmagorian in your deck, it is pretty classic Dredge, though I thin I would be wary in your build of the lack of BoP. That is just me, I seem to get in pickles when I don't have them early.
Birds don't really cut it for me. I'd rather T1 Looting/Crab and start milling myself out. Plus, I don't really see /how/ would Birds help. T3 Unburial Rites? I experienced no mana problems so far, so mana fixing argument is kinda out too.
It's also a 1 drop, which makes it easier to get Vengevines into play. I don't know how long you're planning on going before you get them out, but whenever I can, I'll go double 1/2-drop on T3 if it gets me 2 Vengevines. 8 power + w/e else you played on T3 is no joke. I've done it once with double Ghoultrees. Absolutely glorious.
Kinda surprised at the lack of love for Ghoultree. A 10/10 vanilla beater for 1G on turn 3 is that much worse than a 3/4 beater for 1G on turn 2 that a middling modern deck like Dredgevine won't play it? This deck thrives on cheap creatures. Vengevine doesn't get itself out of the yard. I'm running 8 1-drops and 4 Trees, which can be dropped for 1 as early as turn 2, and I still have to actually draw occasionally in later turns to try and get a guy.
EDIT: Expansion on Ghoultree: How often has anyone gone:
T1 Looting, discard Stinkweed Imp
T2 Dredge, 2nd Imp into graveyard, Looting, Dredge 2nd Imp, 1 mana still open
or,
same as above minus 2nd looting
T3 Dredge 2nd Imp
I do the former occasionally, the latter all the time. It fills your graveyard with creatures (hopefully Vengevines). That makes Ghoultree very cheap. Ghoultrees are 10/10. That needs to be answered. There are so many ways to make a T3 G Ghoultree in this deck I don't think there's any way I'd cut it.
How is this archetype fairing against some of the more popular decks (Storm, Jund, Token, Tron, and Splinter Twin) in the format?
I haven't played a whole lot of Jund or Tokens, but I can comment on a few popular decks. I have no idea on %'s, but I have played this deck a lot, and this is what I've noticed.
Storm/Twin/Hive Mind/Melira (combo): Average. Hope you goldfish faster than they do. For Hive Mind, you should be in colors that let you play their pacts, so thats a positive. You could go Mindbreak Trap out of the board for Storm. Melira is worse than the rest, in my experience.
Tron: Good. I haven't seen a non-RG Tron is a while, and that matchup isn't bad at all. I don't really mind Karn exiling a Dredger from my hand. By T3, you should be able to Dredge every turn to feed him, and I've played with an empty board until the turn I win, mostly negating his second ability. You really just have to race the Emrakul.

I think it is good, but not better than the other cards people are running. In a deck like this, finding room for all the fun toys is tough. I think I would see people running Splinterfright over Tree as it helps dump cards in the grave. The other thing is that we are running creatures that are intended to jump out of the graveyard, so it kinda conflicts. I run ghoultree in a different deck and I really like it, but I am not sure it is right for this one.
I've been following this thread for awhile and I must say the deck is very interesting. I've been playing it the past week in preparation for GP Columbus because I think it is very explosive and can catch a lot of people off guard. I've made changes throughout the course of testing and would like to share my lists/results.
I took this list to a local event. The event was 4 rounds, however, I could only play 2 rounds due to a prior engagement. Also, this was my first time playing the deck. First round, I played U/W Control. Game One, I didn't really see a lot of his deck. All he played was a snapcaster mage, Gideon Jura and I saw no counter magic. My thoughts were he kept a bad hand. Game Two was a lot more interesting. He resolved a batterskull and was at a reasonably high life total. I managed to get a board full of gravecrawlers, bloodghasts, recur 3 of vengevines and postmortem lunge a 9/9 splinterfright to seal the deal. Round 2, I played against Jund. Game One was very close and my opponent had already seen what I was playing since my first round almost went to time. I was filling up my graveyard the first couple turns to got hit with a Jund Charm. The game went down to a "next turn, one of us wins" scenario and he pulled it out. Game Two, I kept a bad hand and was punished for my mistake.
Overall - I felt the deck was alright but it could be more finely tuned. Splinterfright was alright but I found myself in a difficult position when I would mill him. The same goes for postmortem lunge. Magus of the Bazaar was really solid. Sometime I would get stuck with Haakon and Extractor Demon in my hand and no way to discard them. Renegade Doppelganger I'm on the fence with. He is was good when I could copy vengevines and that's about it. Also, the lack of able blockers was a problem.
I've been testing this version on Jund, Melira Pod, and U/W Tron.
I think the addition of Fauna Shaman is good as it allows us to discard the creatures we need in the graveyard and retrieve creatures that we need. Granted it is rather slow and does have a target on it's head but I find it's utility undeniable. Zombie Infestation has worked out very well for me while I've been tested this build. Discarding Vengevines, Bloodghasts and Gravecrawlers to get potential attackers/blockers as well as access to recur Gravecrawler has been good. The addition of Screeching Skaab is debatable. His spot belonged to Magus of the Bazaar and both have been fine, I'm not sure which I better. Drawing 2 and discarding 3 is powerful in the deck but Skaab is a zombie, mills 2 and is a better attacker/blocker. Nameless Inversion was added because I found myself getting beat by Melira Pod because of lack of interaction with my opponent. Also, it can be cast from the graveyard if Haakon is present.
I'm still trying to tweak the numbers and am curious on your take.

Overall I beleive she is a good outlet, but she is a very big target on her own, which may be why she seemed to be skipped over in my head.

I'm always on the fence with Infestation, to be honest. It seems slow, but it seems you've been getting good use from it, It can also be used to discard a Thug or imp to dredge more

I would probably run Magus if I ran either of them, Being able to get 2 Dredges from the effect nets more cards in the grave than skaab, and then you just discard the things you need and the dredgers to do it again. Magus is a repeatable effect, This also paints a wonderful Target on its head though.
Nameless Inversion was added because I found myself getting beat by Melira Pod because of lack of interaction with my opponent. Also, it can be cast from the graveyard if Haakon is present.
I love this actually...I never noticed this at all in all honesty. Thanks, Il have to make room for this. I really like it!
------------
Overall I see that you only run a few dredge outlets and that actually lets you run other things. Overall I enjoy your build.
------------
Also I'm updating my original deck on the original post(!), I know that I haven't been posting much but I've been doing a lot of research into many other formats (mostly more modern and Legacy on my phone) since I have been without power and then no internet Dx. But hopefully I'm back and going to be more helpful.
I highly recommend going away from Shaman Vengevine. It's really, really slow. I saw you only got two games in, and neither were against Twin or Storm. I don't think you have a shot to race either. I'm sure your deck is very stable (it's similar to my first list), and can grind out wins against creature decks, but losing to 2 of the top 6 decks pretty much all the time is no good.
I think it is good, but not better than the other cards people are running. In a deck like this, finding room for all the fun toys is tough. I think I would see people running Splinterfright over Tree as it helps dump cards in the grave. Fair enough. I prefer the explosiveness of T2 Ghoultree to the grinding of Gravecrawler/Haakon. I like this deck as an all-in strategy in at least game 1. Staying out of black (minus my Dredge) lets me run less land as well, which gives me more threats to play with.
Anyone else played with Skaab Ruinator? I think it's a better grinder than Gravecrawler/Haakon. It clashes with Splinterfright if you're into him, but if you're not I see no reason not to at least play with him out of the board. You should have plenty of creatures. Double U might be tough, but again, I'm only in 3 colors, so it's probably easier for me than most.

My original List ran the Ruinator, It was pretty beast but I found that when I needed to get him out I didn't want to exile my dredgers or vines, and then I shifted to Haakon/Gravecrawler and found I like It better. It does put a lot of pressure though. In a deck that's more based on Ghoultree and splinterfright (which is one of my standard decks xD) you would be able to run Ruinator a lot better with an easier way of casting.
Yeah. You kinda have to pick between Ruinator and Gravecrawler/Haakon. I chose Ruinator because I run less land and more creatures than every other list in this thread, so I can recur him more often and without exiling something I need to stay in the yard. Part of that is also my meta where I'd rather have a big recurring flyer than a few recurring weenies.

Its all dependant on choice, same reason why Im not playing ghoultree, hes a big 10/10 vanilla for 2 or even 1, but Id rather combo offf and swing for either win or a lot of damage. Still like the idea though!
I need ideas for a modern deck with Vengevine. It's arguably my favorite creature ever printed and it has soooo much raw potential I just want it to be good.
I was thinking maybe some sort of RUG, Naya, or Jund color combination,

If you feel like squeezing the heck out of Fauna Shaman, she likes searching for Squadron Hawks and dumping Hawks for other stuff.
yeah I was looking into having both fauna shaman and birthing pod in the deck. but pod seems to turn the deck into a combo pod with VV thrown in, and i don't want that. but squadron hawks could be good.
Was thinking something like this but maybe a birthing pod route, pod away kitchen finks for VV, then vines away when i need to and bring them back after.
There is potential with birthing pod but normally pod lists want to utilize enter the battlefield effects so you get something out of your creature even if they are killed

I get that but i would really rather not make a pod combo deck. Melira combo is kinda cool, but too be frank I'm totally sick and tired of the kiki-jiki/splintertwin combos. It was annoying enough in EDH, then standard, and now modern. As far as the come into play triggers Of course i'm going to utilize those but I'd also like the Vengevine strategy so the deck has 2 routes of attacks. Basically im wondering if its worth shoehorning pod into a Vengevine deck, or vengevine into a pod deck, or is there a happy medium somewhere.
This deck came up in the metagame thread in the main forum after it 4-0'ed a daily online. The concept seems kind of silly and a lot of fun, so I figured I'd start a discussion towards examining the decklist and improving it if we can.
From some initial playtesting, it appears to work around the engine of Vengevine/Fauna Shaman/Bloodbraid Elf to get card and creature advantage on the opponent quickly. The Phantasmal Images and Renegade Doppelgangers generally copy your Vengevines, or whatever big threat they manage to land (in the case of the Images).
The main weakness I see with the deck is very little in the way of disruption of your opponent outside of evoking Shriekmaw, or casting/blinking Mystic Snake.
Any initial thoughts?
