Can you post the list that includes the black splash?
For the UWR list-I've been playing with shadow of doubt main Over the mindcensor and I really like it. But I'm also considering using the slot for a third spell snare because that card is simply over performing
Would anyone consider running a Kiki-Jiki or two in the main as threat to combo win out of nowhere? It also reuses most of the creatures in the deck very well, being useful even if you don't have the full combo ready to go. Just a thought I had after seeing Shaun McLaren run it in his UWr control list a while back.
I play a lot of UWR Geist.
Currently I am a big fan of splashing black for Crackling Doom, and I give total credit to Jeff Hoogland for giving it a try. I think it's everything UWR Geist wants to do, it's removal, it's damage, it clears the way for Geist.
Before the current move that many people have made (including myself) to the more threat dense/proactive version of UWR Geist, I ran Spell Snares and Cryptic Commands in my list.
Since then I have been a firm believer in dropping reactive spells for proactive ones. The idea that the deck needs to be filled with ways to kill your opponent made sense to me, and seemed to prove itself true in a higher win %. I did sometimes wish I had a Spell Snare in some match-ups, and also sometimes wished I had Cryptic Commands occasionally, but I accepted that I wasn't on that plan anymore.
I recently reached out to Vjeran Horvat of Croatia. He won Grand Prix Prague playing UWR Geist in January of 2014, and most recently narrowly missed the Top 8 of GP Milan. Of note he cites the reasons for missing the Top 8 for play mistakes not the strength of his deck. Consequently I respect him as a player and am very interested in what he has to say regarding this archetype. (I'll be posting his list soon pending his approval along with the tournament report & I'll cross post in this thread.)
Vjeran won GP Prague with a list that ran 3 Cryptic Commands. His most recent list at GP Milan ran 2 Spell Snare and 2 Cryptics along with 4 Remands. I feel torn because if Vjeran is able to win a GP with some reactive spells, and then nearly top 8 another is it possible that just dropping all counter magic is incorrect? Maybe there is a sweet spot of sorts where the deck runs nearly all proactive spells but is able to answer key things with a couple of Cryptic Commands in the list?
I'm really curious to hear everyone's thoughts.
I like the three Remand 1 Cryptic split. I often find my self Casting Dig to look for a Cryptic.
I personally think cryptic as a one of is a really good idea. I have had many board stalls lately in my RUG twin deck where cryptic was able to tap everything and I could attack for 8 then snapcaster and do it again for 16. Also great for some top end off a dig.

Hi nate, your videos are great and I learnt quite a lot from it and how you uses the black splash which I'm also considering at the moment as well.. just ask you some questions and hope you can help me with it.
1) it is worth to run some mb sweepers like anger or pyroclasm?
2) I have been trying isochron sceptor as a 1 off or 2 pieces so far and so far it netted me rather good results with me going 3-0 and 2-1 a couple of games. And yes, I took out cryptic so as to lower the cmc of the deck. What do you think of it?
3)I used stormbreath dragon as a means to means to deal with siege rhino and avoid path and etc. Do you think thundermaw hellkite is still better than stormbreath with all the rhinos around currently?
4) in what matchups do you usually side out geist?
Thanks for all your advice in advance and will look forward to watching more videos from you.
I like your list and all the counters you run compared to older lists, though I am not sure if the lack of stormbreath is wise considering the rise in midrange like you said. Also, the one cryptic many others have been talking about I have found to be very helpful. Also, what is your take on ghost quarter vs tech edge? Right now I agree with tech edge due to it's late game potential, though I am curious to see what others think.
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but in a more aggressive build, have people explored using Frostburn Weird or Nivmagus Elemental alongside Geist and Snapcaster?
I know Figure of Destiny may be faster than them or take less mana, but Weird seems like he passes the bolt test and can swing for more than 1 without requiring any cards (like Swiftspear).
It may be meta specific, but I have people at my LGS who play green stompy, goblins, and other creature-oriented decks alongside things like pod, affinity, etc, where the Weird's 4 toughness comes in very handy.
Splashing black for Crackling Doom wrecks both decks that play amulet (Bloom Titan and the R/G Breach Combo that sometimes runs it) since it kills Primetime and the few that try to ramp into or cheat out Emrakul. Path also ruin's regular Bloom Combo.
Their Hive Mind plan can be pretty annoying, but if you bring in Wear/Tear's it's not that bad unless they get the magical t1 kill.
Thanks for the reply. However, can I ask how remand can help us to no lose the game when your opponent casts pact with hive mind on the field? I believe since they will copy our remand, they will remand our remand? Hahaha, sorry for the confusion. I am planning to put more spellsnare, since it counters most of their stuff to set up combo, eg: pact, summer bloom, amulet and so on. I am still new with this, so I might be wrong.

Spell Snare is amazing in Modern.
I discuss the latest list I've been working with in the first video of this playlist.

If you're running Slaughter Games you can always bring it in and name Hive Mind as well. Also I'm not sure how good Wear/Tear is vs Hive Mind. If they resolve it, they will be able to cast a Pact before you are given priority meaning you now have to cast it.
so this is the list I'm playing now. I love it but I need to fit a wrath of god or two in my sideboard. too many Gx decks with thruns. I've been considering trying the black splash for crackling doom instead but I need to get some first.
Nice vids and exploenations again Nate. But why is crackling doom preferred over celestial purge? Sure it does 2 dmg, but purge costs 1 mana less and can also handle blood moon, lily, ascendancy, therefore doom also can deal with a huge bogle and tron, but this is not the real intention I guess.
Doom often times acts like Path 5-6 for things with greater than three toughness. It semi-counters the parts of a Seige Rhino we really care about (the rhino and life gain), it's a main deck answer to Thrun, Bogles, Etched Champion, and no matter where cranial plating is moved, it always kill that creature, likewise if they start going off with Archbound Ravager it always kills the thing the tokens are put on, it gets around Vines of the Vastwood in infect, and the damage can be redirected to planeswalkers.
if you're going for that, instead of adding a 4th color, consider playing celestial flare. the only downside is that it doesn't kill emrakul without the annihilation trigger on the stack. but really, if they manage to cast it, you probably are going to lose anyways. i've run it to great effect against decks that run thrun, boggles, infect, other geist decks, etc.

I speak in sarcasm because calling people ******* ******** is not allowed.
None of these other options kill slippery boggle when it either has a umbra on it or they have leyline out. That is why crackling doom is so attractive to me at least.

Find something, Live For it, Fight for it, Die for it. Then it might get passed on the the next generation.
I don't know if everyone's seen it, but there's a "leaked" ban list going around (I know, not official, but raises questions) and DTT is on it. I've been wondering what would be good options to replace Dig Through Time, and I'm considering Chandra, Pyromaster, Cryptic Command, more threats or just getting the full playset of Electrolyzes/Paths/Remands (currently running 3 of each). What do you guys think?

do you have a link for that, it would be strange when ddt is on the list but tc dont
TC is also on the list, I just mentioned DTT because it's the one I run.
That link has been floating around for a little while now.
That being said, don't believe a word that site says; Dec 27/28th is Spain's "April Fool's Day", so you can likely take the article with a grain of salt.

I think against their Titan plan our match-up is fine, we run 4 Path to Exiles and if your running Geist you can likely race them.
4 Geist of Saint Traft
1 Vendilion Clique
3 Restoration Angel
1 Stormbreath Dragon
4 Path to Exile
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Spell Snare
4 Remand
4 Lightning Helix
1 Shadow of Doubt
2 Electrolyze
2 Dig Through Time
3 Flooded Strand
2 Arid Mesa
2 Steam Vents
2 Hallowed Fountain
1 Sacred Foundry
4 Celestial Colonnade
1 Sulfur Falls
2 Island
1 Plains
1 Mountain
2 Ghost Quarter
3 Kor Firewalker
2 Aven Mindcensor
2 Engineered Explosives
1 Batterskull
2 Magma Spray
2 Wear // Tear
1 Negate
2 Counterflux
