The event was Thursday Night Modern that our local shop runs every week. This is the list that I ran based of what you recommended, and me tweaking after looking at some of your lists. I also adjust for borrowed fetches. Is 11 to many?
After last night, the Wolf Run is getting cut. I just don't like it all that much. It never did anything for me. I also am not a fan of the E1s either.
Kessig is a great top deck and has won me a good number of games, but I ran goyfs and smiters. Speaking of which, do you just not have goyfs? understandable if not, but if you do, get them in there lol Also, I dropped E1 as he's a terrible top deck. I ran 4 flinthoof and you're missing one card in that list. I found having 12 one drops and 10 two helped me curve out more often.
I mean, their not wrong Twin isnt a great matchup, and pod is a bad matchup, and those are the two biggest decks. If pod were to get banned/hated, then we'd be in a better position.
I know, we can only hope. Twin is a race against the Oops, they win button and pod is generally good against us. I have won, but it's tough. We can only hope they ban pod.
Pod is a f-ing pain but I like the challenge it brings with the Kiki Pod, Melira Pod and other variations. It does so many tings with all those different creatures they run and keeping you on your toes. I wouldnt want a Ban to Pod. I have a favorable match up against any Pod. When I face Pod 2 things happen after game 1. I side in my Pod package of 10 sides (4 Torpor Orb, 2 Shattering Spree, 2 Destructive Revelry, 2 Krosan Grip) and I switch up play style. I smash the Pod and they rarely get it to go off. Qasali Pridemage is my B---h. I hate that card with a passion. Sudden Shock is so good in this format and Qasali can kiss my rear as it will never blow up my Orb especially since I have 4 Sudden Shocks and most Pods run no more then 2 Qasali. Now take out the Pod and they still resolve all these creatures but they have only 1 or 2 copies and now cant go get them unless they have Chord which still isnt that great with an Orb they will struggle to kill. Granted if they have Abrupt Decay, Maelstrom Pulse like some decks run thats a different story.
Twin for me isnt always a race as I can slow play them to death which contradicts my deck style of Gruul Blitz. But since you cant always out run them I found a way to play control vs Twin. Have Torpor Orb out or not, I can use Sudden Shock to kill Kiki before he can go off and kill Twin with my 6 Enchantment removal spells which 4 are practically uncounterable. Sudden Shock is a main board (never a dead card unlike Combust and is more useful in more match ups). I bring in 10, count them 10 sides (4 Torpor Orb, 4 Krosan Grip, 2 Destructive Revelry) and change my style of play to stop them and win with whatever creatures I have. I dont always win but I have turned my chances vs Twin into a much better odds in my favor. 4 Combust (more like most people run 3 in sides) vs 8 Pestermite and Deceiver, Id rather have 4 for 4 Sudden Shock vs 4 Kiki and 6 Enchantment removal vs Twin is much better in my favor, add in 4 Torpor Orb and I like my odds. Tarmo Twin is another story as its tougher for me.
Yes call me crazy for having so many sides vs these decks but I side differently. Id rather have more tools vs the top/most used decks then have more versatility vs everything else that I wont see as much and have less tools vs the top/most seen decks making my odds weaker. Yes it does cause me to slightly alter my play style but so far its working for me. My main decks hasnt lost to Jund in about 16 matches. For Storm I have Mindbreak Trap but testing Eidolon Im probably gonna switch to that. My weakest match up is Burn but with Eidolon it will help and as a Burn player myself I know there isnt that many out there to where I have to side for. If I cant out race Reanimator and Rock, which I rarely see before they get out the big dudes or Im screwed but Id take those odds to have better odds against what I see more. And if I finally add W for Path to Exile permanently as Im play testing still which is very helpful there but also slows my main deck so to be continued.........
I havent run Latern's or Mcpatches' exact decks so I dont know how my sideboards and strategy would work with their strategy and main deck.
I dropped wolfrun the minute I dropped Knight. With out her tutoring ability it just makes openers silly. Speaking of knight, I had a chat with somefriends about her the other day. We did a critical analysis and decided that shes just not as good in modern as we hope.
Want a good beater while being alright against more of the meta? Again King Oreo or Loxodon Smitter is better.
For midrange:
Wooly, giest and smiter are all the better option, as they generally hit just as hard. She has one cute trick depending on the deck you run her in (junk- vault of the arkangel naya- Wolfrun) but you're always tied between attacking or tutoring.
In legacy she can grab a million more relevant answers. Maze to give her vig, while also being defencive on attacks/defence. She can get tower to reset batterskull, hugely relevant, as well as get Karais (or how ever its spelled) to deny sneak and show as well as reanimater. Shes a meta killer in legacy, shes a beater in modern. Totally different.
I usually have about 25 cards that I rotate in and out my side. Blood Moon and Molten Rain are in that 25 and there are times when I know I will need to rotate them in. With 15 sides or even 20 sides there seems never to be enough room. Ive run into issues before of over thinking/tweeking sideboards. With new sets, new cards, rules and unbannings/bannings my sideboard will always have slots that will be a revolving door.

I wish I had Goyfs. I am new to modern, and only just got back to standard 7 months ago after 12+ years of not playing. I can't afford goyfs. The card I'm missing is a single Voice or Resurgence.

No prob, I'd probably suggest dropping it for another pridemage. Consistency and hitting for 4 on turn 2 is pretty sweet. It's also nice to have md help against tron, pod, tokens, affinity, and anything trying to mess with your day through artifacts or enchantments.
I mean, their not wrong Twin isnt a great matchup, and pod is a bad matchup, and those are the two biggest decks. If pod were to get banned/hated, then we'd be in a better position.

I mean I much rather hope it gets hated out. Torpor Bird goes a ways to help, but I doubt its good enough
I got time, and since we have around 12+ hours before the new banlist comes out, though Id go over some points. Not really a big deal, since I'm sure these points would remain vaild for about a year or 2.
Toss 3-4 in your deck. Probably 4, and go tribal flames. You have 3 real reasons to run the deck now over naya, 1. deathrite, 2. giest, 3. flames, in that order. With Wild Nacatl unbanned, you have the best 1 drops in the format, backed witht the best 2 drops in the format, and reliable access to the best 3 drop in the format, the best burn and removal, gravehate, and life gain. Why not?
Smaller notes would be the return of jund as the big baddie, which blows for us, but wed have reiable access to aggression now, so its not as bad as before. Also, kavu is a relable replacement for tarmogoyf again.
This is actually great for us. It powers up tempo and control, which we love to kill. By far, this would be the best unban for us to hear. I can give my LANTERN Guarantee that if this happens, were a true tier one deck. Fae, Esper control, Delver all get LIGHT YEARS better, and they can hamper pod for us. And we eat them in response.
I dont think twin gets any better, as they wont use it because snapcaster is too important for them.
Verdict? 50-50 Doubt it unless they want a force a shake up, but crazyier things have happened.
Bloodbraid Elf Unbanned
I can't see it happening unless Jace is unbanned too. But lets just say elf is unbanned. We no longer see rock or Junk rock, we see Jund. That means more bolts, and thats not awesome for us. Neither is the more decays coming off it too. Pod dips out of being the deck we fear, and it starts being jund. While running Elf out there would be fun (And yes, you would start playing elf.) its not healthy for us, unless jace comes off too... read below.
Verdict? 0% alone
Jace unbanned
This helps control... but I fear it helps twin too, something I dont think they care to do. However, jace unbanned, isnt bad for us. In fact, its really good for us. It forces jund and pod to deal with it, which inturn slows them down, and makes our speed better against them. It also soaks up spots of removal, giving us more advantage against control. I know most people are blinded by "Jace is OP" from standard (Or even legends of caw blade, because, yes, that standard was over 5 years ago.) so People dont know when ZOO was a deck in legacy, jace would get sided out against us. He was that bad.
Verdict? 50-50 Doubt it unless they want a force a shake up, but crazyier things have happened.
Jace and Bloodbraid elf unbanned
Now were talkin'. this is actually more likely. Little known fact, the reason Wild nacatl and bitter blossom was unbanned at the same time is because Nacatl checks Bitter. So, this pairing isn't actually far unlikely.
What does that mean for us? Well this is actually slightly worse for us than just jace on his own... But there would be a weird hivemind effect for it. American pros would flock to control decks, because they love the card. they would "Tune" control decks for a while (esper, grixis) which would give the hivemind something to use, and more control decks would be in the meta, so we still gain value. Not really the worst place in the world for us, since wed gain some position and a power house on our top end.
Verdict? 55-45 This would no doubt cause a flood of people to modern, but I wonder if they would hold it til they need to ban something to people do the same they did for nacatl bitter/ deathrite update. 2 unbans, 1 ban.
Verdict? Very Likely It would have no effect on the meta game sans taking a tier 2 deck and making it a tier 1.5. It does not effect us. They havent done it because litterally there is no good reason too. Poor exuse, but it doesnt give them any cred from doing it.
Sword of the Meek unbanned
Weirdly enough... Good for us. May seem weird for anyone to read I'm saying "I dont mind another infinite life combo in modern" but its good for us. (With Thopter foundry for all you youngins') Heres the deal. Yes if they go turn 2 sword, turn 3 land, foundry. and we got nothing we're like. Damn, I guess we lose. But thats not how foundry decks work. They use tezz. They are a control deck that preys on combo and midrange decks. we run pridemage, and after siding have artifact hate, or life gain hate. ANd these decks use the cards as an engine, more than a combo... we can even outrace their lifegain alot of the time.
So yeah, getting an esper deck that will run things like shadow of doubt to mess with pod, and hurt jund too? Yeah, do it.
Verdict? Most likely Just tossing it out there, I think its most likely to happen. Its weird, shakes things up, but isnt format destructive.
Birthing Pod Banned.
The only way I see this happening is if they go for the 2 for 1 with jace or AV being unbaned along with X (troll maybe?) because it would stirr way too much controversy. But its also kinda my secret hope. I'm bais. But this would make us Tier 1 in a instant. The truth is that POD is so strong Ive died to it when it was used in HATEBEARS. It's crazy value at any point in time, the pod decks just also happen to abuse it with finks. Its the number one reason anger of the gods sees play and the number one reason we lose. With this gone, we're not just a little better, were a ton better.
Verdict? 50-50 I think it will make too big of an uproar. especially since thats the deck most people try to slowly put together, and it will break hearts. But, wizards has done things like this before.
Everything else? ISnt worth mentioning. Either isnt going to happen at all because of wizards mind set, or isnt going to happen due to the cards impact on the meta.
Can I use Birds of Paradise as a replacement for Noble Hierarch as sort of a budget alternative while saving up to get the Hierarchs? The reason I'm asking is that I'm not quite sure which part of the Noble Hierarch is the most important one; the mana dork or the exalted trigger.
I mean, sure you can. I think you'll be missing the exalted trigger, though. You might find yourself slower and you might find your 'Goyfs woefully unable to push through damage against opposing 'Goyfs.
Soooo a friend has brought up using Mark of Asylum in sb to combat against Anger and other burn based removal over growth. I'm going to test it out and see how good it is. I know it's not instant, but being able to drop it and pretty much forget about it is kind of nice.
Id only do it if i saw anger that much. Were talking that jund with main decked angers, scapeshift with main firespout, and sided angers and bolts everywhere. I run boros charm so i think i perfer a free pump spell. Hate bears need mark because they also die to pyro clasm
This might be just playing with fire but I'm probably gonna push my Qasali Pridemages to the sideboard. moving Eidolon, Great Revel main deck. Eidolon is a stronger disruption, and must be dealt with or will take over the game. At that point he has done damage or just made our goyfs grow. Eidolon > Pridemage in most of the match ups in this meta? Or am I just wrong?
I personally think pridemage is better. Twin affinity storm boggles, then random side stuff from other decks, hate bears worship, infects wild defiance, trons spell skite . But geel free to test it and let me know how it goes
Help me out Zoo people. I'm trying to figure out which threads belong in Established and which belong in Creation. How would you classify this thread? Is it Naya Zoo? Small Zoo? Midrange Zoo?
Small Zoo is an aggro deck.
Blue Zoo (In what ever form, I classify it if it has a main deck counter)- is a tempo deck. Just an aggressive one.
Naya Midrange is a midrange deck (If it has mana ramp and more than 4 cmc and higher casting costs, not including rampager as his cmc is technically 2.)
With that in mind... Most Tribal flames list have been looking like zoo again... for a while they were anything aggressive, sometimes looking more like boros, so that could be merged into this thread, if we wanted (Or I can start a new one and close those 2) as they both abide by zoo's sligh aggro set up, one just has an added element.
Blue Zoo sometimes gets made on deck creation... and it should stay that way. This season its had 6 apperances on mtgo, and 0 pro/semi pro apperances.
Naya zoo is (like I described with with blue zoo) a midrange deck firmly, but feels aggressive, probably because the nacatl 1 cmc beaters. However alot of people I know (In the know) have been cutting nacatl for better 3+ cmcs or mana ramp even.
Most up to date info on the zoo distrabution since modern season started:
An aquarium (blue zoo) has been doing fairly well, but domain by far has been taking the cake. No gruul zoo, and very little triditional naya small zoo
I'll be merging these deck in with Zoo (Domain/Tribal Flames with Small Zoo). Since pat cox did his thing, its no longer "What ever gets most aggro in, boros, zoo, guide and lynx, whatever" Its Zoo with the added domain element.
Like wise, The Zoo thread will be getting a reboot to reflect this change too, and I'll be asking people put a little reminder on their deck if its straight Naya or domain.
Kessig is a great top deck and has won me a good number of games, but I ran goyfs and smiters.
