I have a bunch of GPTs coming up in my area and I'll be running small zoo, so I have two questions;
1.)Choke vs Blood Moon: choke doesn't hurt out mana base, but it's does nothing agains R/g tron, mono green Devotion, or jund. Are those just good match ups for us?
2.)Would running Pillar of Flame over Lightning Helix terrible? Trading instant speed and the life gain for Extra Finks hate main deck? It would pump goyf as well since we don't run many sorceries.
I didn't want to be all weird, but I was the U tron player.
Edit:
Also the fae player you played vs is Mike. He's a well known guy around the area because he's a level 2 judge (I think, may only be level 1) he judges most of the events around the area and he's known for playing faeries because that's all he plays. I dunno if you noticed but a majority of his deck is foiled out. It's fun to rat on him for having nonfoil mutavaults though.
Ha! I was wondering if you'd be there. Man, I was playing Zoo, was wearing an orange shirt with orange shoes, talking about how I just moved back home, and I top foured with a meta gamed zoo deck... Course it was me. haha.
Yeah he was a good guy, and I could tell by his cards that he really works on his fae alot, like I do with zoo. He was a great guy, felt a little bad. I mean when I top 8ed I was like "Jesus I hope I play the fae player for an easy top 4." I'd have hated my life if I had to go up against pod like you. Good work though, that match was the grindiest of grindy! Freakin' 40 minutes. Maybe more?
Also, if your there next week, let me give you my card. If your doing any of the upcoming ptqs, or just testing, let me know.
@Lantern - It looks like you decided to stick with Pridemage than Flinthoof Boar. Would you say it's more of a meta match-up since Flinthoof is more of a Body/Aggro than a simple 2/2 with artifact removal?
To be honest with you, Id say their flex spots more than anything. Online, I'll probably sticking to pridemages, just because it saves me some sideboard space, and shores up some matchups that arent awesome. Storm, twin, pod, affinty, random swords and skites. But next week I'll be replacing them for voice of resurgence. In my matches, pridemage was mostly a beater, and I only popped him once. Even then it wasnt super relevant, since it was the fae match, and even if I lost that game Id probably have won the next one. then again though, playing voice against fae would have been brutal. Turn off all combat tricks, turn off counters.
So once again, to be clear... eventually my lists will be what I use online and what i use in the store, same core, different cards padding it. Id play pridemage at a ptq.
Thanks for the write up Lantern. Everything seems pretty solid.
Thats the hope. Coulda just got lucky last night. Seemed like there was only one pod in the store, but it looked to be lsvs list maybe? So with less pod I'm not the worst deck around. I'm sure sides will pack some zoo hate next week for me, so I'll have to play around those.
But if your going to an event where you wont have to replay people, yeah, its sweet. Helps that right now zoo is under the radar. People are not packing anger as much anymore, because they thing zoo is totally dead. Sneaking in now is a great thing. Zoo still is around 2% of the online meta game, so its far from dead.
I have a bunch of GPTs coming up in my area and I'll be running small zoo, so I have two questions;
Well, you also have to look at the decks choke kills that blood moon doesnt:
1. Delver
2. Merfolk
3. Twin
4. W/u or W/UR control, since they can play around moon.
And thats why I use choke. Its not LD so much as its blue hate. Its mostly there because of twin and control. I'm not great agasint twin, but If I land a choke I'll win. My jund matchup isn't horrid. Mutagenic goes in as does Eidolon of the Great Revel and chained to the rocks. mostly by taking out 3 helix and 2 pridemae. When you have 6 paths, and 4 rampagers, your removal/attack through plan is really strong then you can finish off with burn usually. Just need to be aggressive during early turns. Big zoo rocks blood moon and choke right now, 3/3 split. But I found it was over kill, and there was other side things i wanted, plus blood moon has always been awesome or terrible for zoo.
I wouldn't do pillar over helix. It feeds goyf fine, but in the side I want to use 2 chained to the rocks. Its basicly a path to every deck accept hatebears. (Rock sometimes too, but if they took a turn to ghostquarter your mountain, you got in a swing a turn earlier already, and it hurts there mana, keeping you in "early turns" longer, so I dont count it.) The reason I use helix is well, aside from it being great against aggro matches, its instant, and does 6 point life swing, allowing me to have a vaild "Burn you out" option, while holding it as removal. It heals up from my greed too, and I'm greedy.
Fun fact: I think I only started half my games at 14... the other half I stayed around 18. for some reason basics loved me last night.
Finks isnt a super problem anymore. hatebears MIGHT have two side board. Might. No control deck or Big zoo is running it anymore. Pod runs it, but the problem is pods deck as a whole, not a single finks, because rampager, and path more or less negate it.
Oh, and it took me a second to remember last night, but I got used to it, just like corsair does for jund, Eidolon does for us. When it dies, and it will against midrange, goyf gets bigger, as its an enchantment. And on that note, pridemage can kill a pesky corsair. Didnt actually think of that one til just now.
I didn't want to be all weird, but I was the U tron player.

If you couldn't tell I hate greedy blue decks.
Great report Lantern. Im finding that the tough match ups for Zoo are Burn and Reanimator. With Eidolon and Mindbreak Trap Storm isnt as tough. Choke comes in pretty handy. So far what really helps me against Twin is having Enchantment removal like Krosan Grip right when Twin drops or a Sudden Shock for Pestermite and Kiki. Or having a Torpor Orb early. There always seems to be some many cards to fit into a sideboard and never enough room. I rotate about 25 sides and pull 10 out depending on what Ive seen or think the meta with be.
Ghor-Clan Rampager is the main reason I have G. He does so much work and makes such a difference I cant count how many games he's won me in Standard and Modern.
With you running 2 copies of Woolly Thoctar how often are you seeing him do/put in work without getting removed. I like him better then Knight of the Reliquary but Im seeing more Jund (Liliana) and U decks as of late so Loxodon Smiter for now seem a better option for me. I also like Brimaz as a 3 drop option.
So I'm running pretty much Lantern's list now with smiters instead of thoctars because I'm in a control heavy meta and it forces them to remove it. I went 2 and 2 tonight. I lost close games with affinity after flooding game two instead of creatures or more removal. Delver was the other important match that went to 3 games and we had lethal across from one another with him just top deck luckiness.
Hey Lantern; been fishing and play testing your last list. It feels really good especially the 2nd horizon over kessig. I'll probably run your list but will be changing wooly thoctar to smiter because I expect a lot of control and tempo at my up coming ptq this weekend. thanks for all your hard work, will post results~!

Smiter is very bad against jund. I had the same conversation with a modern player on monday. If they turn 1 discard you, they will see the smiter, and not plus one lili. If they land a lili turn 3, and you have even 2 creatures, they will -1 her, always. If your on the play, and its turn 3, you play smiter, its not like you want to hold beef. Then they kill it. If they have a lili and you have no creatures, and they didn't see a smiter in your hand, +1ing lili is what they will do, and thats the best case, but is incredibly situational.
Thoctar is actually better then smiter against jund because he at the very least can trade with a normal powered jund goyf, and dies to all the same stuff.
Smiter's cant be countered clause is actually really relevant though. The discard is too against raven's crime or just lili. These are things that grixis tempo, or control do. Smiter is better than thoctar against control and tempo.
As far as how often he was removed, So far outta 50 games with him? twice. He was bounced once against fae, and he was bolted/helixed once against big zoo. But the latter is still fine in my book, 1 for 2 and all.
It is worth noting that any time you play woolly people go "Woolly Thoctar? I havent seen that in a long time... you're going deep." then laugh. Then die. Then after the game say "Got to be honest with you, didnt really expect much from thoctar, but that dude is a beating."

Happens. The affinity match up is so dependent on getting said removal. Stony silence kills them hard though, if you want an alternate side stuff. You're giving up some power against boggles, twin, and storm, for a lot more power against tron, adnuesm and affinity. Delvers a weird match. it can kill ya if your not careful, but you should be favored. I crack for basics, and don't play an all out aggro game unless I know Im safe from burn or bounce. they play against us a lot like we play against affinity. Nullify their first 1/2 threats, start getting in there with some pressure. Don't be completely all in. You want pressure, not damage. Always threatening them with beats. Force them to make they plays to give them, because if they dont do it, they will die, then add more pressure.

Yeah, again, full supporter of smiter against tempo/control. Very cool man, eager to see what others can do.
Yeah, it was a great run and I'm very happy with the deck. I'm not really afraid of anything. I did hear that someone that runs Jund will definitely be there. I know that's kind of a bad matchup, but hopefully I get the nut draws and he draws poorly if I face him. I also tested against gifts trons, deadguy ale, and american control winning about 90% of the games easily.
This is what Ive been testing out due the the need for Path to Exile against some threats like Wurmcoil Engine, Griselbrand, Iona, Kitchen Finks and so forth. The Exile comes in very handy. Still trying to get more time getting accustomed to it. I stayed away from 3 drop creatures to take advantage of the Haste and speed from the 2 drops. And since Path to Exile replaces some damage spells its more defensive then offensive so I have to play faster with the creatures. The only card Im not happy to have is Volcanic Fallout to deal with sweep the board even if my creatures get killed. Sweeping those Elves or Merfolk before they get going/big. Oh well everything is a trade off. I also may need to add/swap in a Mountain and a Plains in the lands.

Wild Nacatl is one Ive been back and forth about for a while. E1 is a bad top deck while Nacatl is better as a 3/3 right away. E1 may be replaced by Nacatl soon but for now Im finding his Regenerate feature very useful. I could try to throw Nacatl in and test him also. GG isnt going anywhere and Ape is easier to have big on turn 1 without having to adjust my mana more. I like Nacatl better then Jund Hackblade and may swap 2 in just for him but the Haste feature is too hard to pass on. Id also like to fit in Strangleroot Geist if I can but the GG mana and not being able to drop him of BTE is prohibitive. Im also considering Reforge the Soul which would be awesome of a BTE chain.
So many options to play test and never enough time.
I would rather have a 2/2 body with utilities like Ooze with but the Lightning Mauler is there more for his Haste pairing. The speed with him in this deck is amazing. Jund Hackblade is great off BTE but I dropped him from 4 to 2 copies because LM effects so many other cards in this deck. Id have Ash Zealot and Strangleroot Geist in this deck if I could drop them of BTE. I havent found a better 2 drop outside of Flinthoof Boar (yes I know Goyf) because I can still give him Haste on turn 3 if I have 3 mana and dont have to play him turn 2 which enables me to do other things on turn 2.
Here are some examples that happen with LM quite often.
1. Dropping a turn 1 Kird Ape then turn 2 Burning-Tree Emissary into LM and Im swinging for 6 turn 2. And its great against UW control, Twin and Jund because of that speed.
2. Turn 3 with 3 lands drop LM and a 1 drop like Kird Ape and they can swing right away with whatever the first 2 turns dropped and overrun the opponent who wont have enough blockers.
3. If I cant get the win prior to their turn 4 vs any deck that run cards like Supreme Verdict, Day of Judgment, etc I usually hold a LM and a 1 drop then after they sweep the board I can drop, pair and swing.
4. This happens less often but a few times. I know Ghor-Clan Rampager is better as a pump and is primarily used as one but I have paired him with LM so I could use GCR as an attacker.
So playing against control and other wipe happy decks, should I play a little slower with the creatures to add pressure and hold open charm mana if I have it? Like, 2 or 3 creatures and then start dropping one if I have 3 mana and holding back the RW?
1.)Choke vs Blood Moon: choke doesn't hurt out mana base, but it's does nothing agains R/g tron, mono green Devotion, or jund. Are those just good match ups for us?
2.)Would running Pillar of Flame over Lightning Helix terrible? Trading instant speed and the life gain for Extra Finks hate main deck? It would pump goyf as well since we don't run many sorceries.
