Hey guys, I've been lurking this thread for awhile because I've been pushing grixis in modern for a hot minute. I top 8'd a couple of times at Channelfireball's 1K and 5K with it but then I took a break to try Sultai in the new modern format but now I want to go back to Grixis. I also Just wanted to bring up that there was a PPTQ for modern over the weekend in Berkeley and there was a Cruel Control list and his record at the end of the day was X-0. I didn't see how he did in the top 8 but the deck killed it in the swiss. Watched him use Tasigur to get back his ultimatum too. I can't find his list sadly but from what I saw he ran 2-3 Jace, Architect of Thought. Tasigur, The Golden Fang is insane in this deck. I know that he runs at least two Shadow of Doubt. If any of you were to build a list, what would it look like with Tasigurs and Architects of thought?
Nice. I advocated Jace AOT a couple of pages back. I think that guy is well positioned and if what you're saying about this guy's list is true, could look like it. Any chance a list could be provided at some point?
Yay jace, love that card :). It does seem like hes great vs. lingering souls at least. That sounds pretty cool that he made top 8, it definitely would be interesting to see his decklist hopefully someone could fish it out. My best guess would be that maybe he had 1 shadow main, 1 side, but its really hard to tell since we know so little. Kudos to him though, always nice to hear the archetype doing well! Thanks for telling us all about it.
I don't know the player at all as I don't play in Berkeley normally. I was gonna ask for his list but I was playing my matchup and I was hungry so after my matchup and went and got food and left haha.
I mean it's not crazy to have 2 shadows of doubt MD because of how much fetching there is and its a Cantrip.
Jace is extremely underrated in modern. I like the idea of cutting the opposing attack force in half. His mini fact or fiction is also amazing. Especially in the junk match ups. I'm gonna try to redo his list and what I think it was and then post it. But I know for my grixis deck, I loved Ashiok out of the board for the Junk matchup but I'll have to think it over and post it later. If you guys have any lists, I'd love to see them incorporate at least 2 tasigurs and Jace and I can help go over it.
Do you think the Tasigurs were in the main or the board? Is it actually better than Grave Titan in junk matchups? Grave Titan is path resistant since it leaves a board behind and it actually just can't be beaten in a fight by anything in their deck. I do like Tasigur in the side as a way to recur counters in the matchups where that matters.
I would consider cutting skull from the main since it doesn't beat goyf, tasgur, or siege rhino out of Junk and switching it for a Tasigur of our own. Like the idea of Ashiok for the sideboard. Used to have a sudden shock in the SB for infect. Super sweet tech, but super marginal. Any feedback would be great.
The tasigurs are definitely main deck. I've been testing it in my build and he's insane in this Meta. Almost everything in your GY is amazing. Logic Knot could also help you exile things you don't want with tasigur so that's chill. I also think Terminate is one of my favorite removal spells so I'd go up on that. What's the MD anger for? I also think Mana Leak is awesome right now and I feel like Tamiyo could probably be dropped because she doesn't so as much as she used to. Like before, she could tap POD but now she's just a 5 drop that isn't doing all too much. Grave Titan is good but I like the ability to cast Tasigur for one and leave protection mana up.
Also, how do you guys feel about discard spells main board ? I've seen a few decks not run it but then what's the point of playing Black? And what's the correct amount? Also, I read quite a few posts back about guerrilla tactics? Hahah it's definitely worth giving a try. At least in my meta. My Meta is 50% Junk/ 30 % burn/ 10% Tron/ and then like whatever else. It was because of how much burn there was that I ran 4 monastery siege in my 75. Two MD and two SB.
Discard in the main deck can be a fine choice if your meta dictates it. For a Junk/Burn meta you want batterskull, Monastery Siege and maybe some heavy hitters like Keranos or grave titan for junk.
P.S. I can hear your Heart Bell Swolltron.

Discard is more of sideboard thing for control decks. Unless you are doing something proactive countermagic> discard because discard becomes dead later in the game which is where control decks want
Tasigur, the Golden Fang has been awesome for me so far, I think every deck should be running at least 1. It helps us to stabilize, add pressure, and get a ton of value through his ability over time. I have also been trying out 1 Peer Through Depths and I love it every time I see it. Being able to dig for a timely Cruel Ultimatum, Damnation or counterspell is just what this deck wants.
I've been using my phone since I have no internet currently but I will be at my FNM tonight testing my deck. Once I get internet, I can type up my list. But I like the idea of splashing 1 white land to play timely reinforcements in the board. Burn seems rough with this deck. And is it too crazy to play 25 lands?

not at all, i always play 25 lands and I dont find it too problematic to hit my land drops. although it occurs once in a while that i would be choked at 2 or 3 lands, majority of the time the deck runs fine
Glad to see new people on the thread. Im trying "cruel-less" for the time being. Testing teachings again, Suffer the Past is in there, also Notion Thief which may not be too practical but we'll see how it tests!
Jumping in the bandwagon here, more demoralizing is a cruel ultimatum into a snapcaster cruel ultimatum with the snapcaster you just picked from your gy
Which in turn draws you into another cruel ultimatum
yeah suffer the past is super sweet dude, I know I still miss teachings for it. I used to play 1 dreadship reef too for maximizing that effect. Sadly you can't really run that many StP in a deck because if they don't have a GY it doesnt really do nething. In fact I dont think you could even really run 2. Hope it goes well for you though :).
Hey guys, sorry for lagging on my deck list but this is what I ran at the Modern PPTQ over the weekend. I was X-0 into round 5. Lost round 6 and 7 and won round 8 to end the day at X-2 and placing 10th just barely missing top 8. Here's a quick summary.
Round 1: Burn (2-1)
Game 1: Quick loss because he goes t1 Goblin Guide into t2 Goblin Guide & Lava Spike and I had only 1 early removal so I scoop on turn 4 to just conserve time.
Game 2: Had all my removal and an early dragon's claw to help stall long enough until I had Batterskull online
Game 3 : He plays t1 goblin guide and then t2 Swiftspear and then bolts me. I Dispel bolt. He then tries to play Eidolon on t3 and then gets spell snared. He then plays 1 lava mancer. on my t3, I anger and then he never really recovered from that because I eventually got 2 Dragon's claws and mana to protect them.
Round 2: Abzan (2-0)
Game 1 : Opponent Mulligans to 6 on the play. He turn 1 fetches and shocks to Inquisition me but completely misses as I kept 5 lands, Damnation, and Murderous Cut. He plays t2 tarmogoyf and beats me with it for a few turns but then I eventually kill it and grind him out of cards because I played a Jace on 6. I cast Cruel Ultimatum eventually and he scoops.
Game 2: Ashiok casted 2 rhinos and a tarmogoyf. Nuff said. He took out his decays because he thought it was pointless to just kill Snap with it.
Round 3: Burn (2-0)
Game 1: I was down to 4 after clearing most of his hand and exchanging counters for his burn and removal for creatures (usual control stuff). I cast Batterskull when he had one card. I beat my way back up because he had searing blaze at the time I cast batter skull and drew a Monastery Swiftspear
Game 2: I turn 3 a dragon's claw with spell snare up for smash. and then turn 5 a second dragon's claw to seal the deal.
Round 4: Twin(2-0)
Game 1: Thoughtseized him and then countered and killed everything else. (usual stuff)
Game 2: He goes for combo and I have rakdos charm and dispel. He has 8 lands. He taps 4 for twin. Goes to attacks and makes " 6 billion guys" and swings with the team I then rakdos charm him for 6 billion. He responds with cryptic, I respond with dispel lol.
Round 5: Abzan (2-1)
Game 1: it was easy and I don't really remember what happened
Game 2: He shreds my hand with Inquision on t1 and takes my mana leak. and then goes into thoughtseize taking my other mana leak leaving me with lands terminates and a damnation and then he turn 3 liliana's me into oblivion.
Game 3: He plays Choke on his turn 4 but I have Sulfur Falls, Sunken Ruins, and Swamp in play. I eventually draw cryptic after fighting off his threats for a EoT turn 5 cryptic bounce on choke and then countered next turn when he played it with flash freeze. Eventually Cruel Ultimatum'd him to the point of no return because I got a snap caster back to do it again lol.
Round 6: Burn(0-2)
game 1: mana screwed. Never got past my 3rd land
Game 2: never got past my 3rd land lol.
Round 7: Amulet (1-2)
Game 1: Thoughtseize into thought seize into snap caster thought seize and beat him with snap and burns.
Game 2: He goes t1 amulet, t2 ancient stirrings and another amulet. Goes wild on t3 and I lose lol
Game 3: Mana screwed…again… lol
Round 8: UR Delver (2-0)
Game 1: easy win with jace blanking his whole field of pyromancer tokens. Kept grinding through with tasigur and then eventually drew an electrolyze to speed the game up
Game 2: He Cant beat Jace and Batterskull.
Overall, I loved my deck but I definitely feel like I should've played a Shadow of Doubt and Im wondering what can we do to make our Amulet matchup better ?? That matchup is god awful. And burn is never easy so I may go up to a 4th dragon's claw or 1 Monastery Siege? Maybe 2? Wish I had a way to draw a lot more though. Miss dig through time a lot. Any who, post your thoughts and help me crush Amulet and burn. Those are our worst match ups (ignoring any for of Blue Tron and just Tron in general lol.)
Oh and Olivia Voldaren is THE REAL DEAL in a format where bolt isn't everywhere. She instantly brought me back into games when I had to shoot a ton of souls and big green creatures. Architect of thought nullified Twin's exarch part of the combo and is insane against abzan. These two cards are a MUST HAVE.
Yes I'm aware my board is extremely soft to Tron but it was a Meta read for me.
Good job Swolltron! Your list looks solid for the meta you expected.
Amulet is most certainly not our worst matchup. I play against it every week and I have lost exactly once against them. The key is to have early discard/counter magic and land destruction. I have three molten rain in my board for the amulet deck. If amulet is truly a problem then shadow of doubt will solve it. Also a neat trick that I use to kill them is bouncing a land back to their hand so they die to their own pact. It is quite funny to see the look on their face when that happens.
For burn monastery siege is just better than dragon's claw in my opinion. It shuts them down hard, forcing them to tap out for a lightning bolt then countering it is so sweet. Monastery Siege is also useful in grindy matchups using the khans mode.
Jace is very very good in this meta game. Shutting down tokens like a boss.

What's your list like Lil Bolas? I'm curious if I should run more discard or not and what do I take out if I do? And discard doesn't help G2 and G3 when they bring in leyline. I do like the life gain of dragons claw but I also like burn spending all of their mana to bolt me. I used 4 monastery sieges in my 75 when I was on UB FAERIES. Never lost to burn hahah the only difference is that I had a clock would that work if I only have a handful of creatures?
I only 25 lands because condescend can find lands if I need it. No Jace yet because no tokens in my meta at the moment. Main deck batterskull because SURPRISE MOTHATRUCKER!!
I am currently thinking about running some number of shadow of doubt, maybe a grave titan. I spice the list up every now and then. Got the amulet player at my LGS with the surprise batterskull game 1
I have found that when the amulet player sides in leylines against control they just get wrecked by keeping hands that fold to counter magic.

How is Grixis Charm? It seems a bit meh to me. -4/-4 is passable but misses a few important targets, the permanent bounce is probably the best, and the last ability looks largely useless. I would rather just have terminate/downfall/electrolyze, rely on cryptic/counters for troble cards and maybe SB a repeal or something.
Mogis also seems like a worse Keranos, if you have complete board control it's a fine clock, but if it's still midgame I would prefer Kerry.
I'm currently running one Grave Titan and he's been doing well when resolved. Usually gets path'd and I get to swing with two zombies and then bolt them. 10 power of creatures after ETB is nuts. A bit of a headache though because I almost always have to fight counter wars to get him down.
I will switch cards in and out of flex spots in order to test them and report on their effectiveness. Grixis Charm has been very good for me so far. I ran 4 Grixis Charm just to see how they would perform at one point and I was impressed. Do not discount the last ability it has been used to make my Tar Pit a 5/3 unblockable and win the game
Mogis has closed more games than Keranos for me so far, but I agree that Keranos is better. I resolved Mogis against tron, junk, scapeshift and twin and just stalled until they died
I love Grave Titan, but Batteskull, Mogis and Keranos are all more resilent to removal and cheaper. I might run a single Grave Titan as he kills in two swings.
