When illusory terrain enters the battlefield name a non-basic land. Cards with that name in any zone are islands.
Sorry gang, just dreaming of what I'd really like for christmas.
You maaayyyy be able to get something similar to that effect in black without braking the color by. Blue typically doesn't get effects like this. A one mana hoser for multiple decks wouldn't happen though. Maybe at 2 mana? Either way, I am all about being given the tools to obliterate tron. I have been so hostile about it lately I am considering sleeving up infect again just to mop up tron.
Probably 2 cmc, but blue does love to turn lands into islands.
As for protection from nonbasics that doesn't fix the tron problem, because it's karn on 3 that kills you.
There needs to be something that nerfs both tron/valakut/eldrazi temple before turn three which would force decks to have some slots dedicated to answers or alternate paths of victory. It's the insanely consistent and linear gameplan that has no real interaction that makes those decks so boring and frustrating.
Brains are tackling the same issue in the Lantern group / thread. Yeah, these guys have almost the exact same good vs bad matchup spectrum than us. One spicy suggestion i had never seen mentioned before is Nezumi Shortfang. If your sb plan involves building up to a critical mass of discard spell (TS and Lilies, say), i could see this little guy fit the bill.
Regarding the land hate, don’t forget that Evil Presence is modern legal. Even though its not a global effect, its still pretty cheap.

MODERN Blue Lantern, UBx Tezzerator. OLD SCHOOL 93/94 «The Pain Train» Black Sligh, Esper «Machine Gun» Artifacts, Jund «Psycho» Ponza-Disko.
What about quicksilver fountain? It hasn't been mentioned in a while and can be tutored with Whir. If we sac it before all lands become islands, then they are at least slowed down for a bit
I know my protection artifact wouldn't hurt Tron. I've wanted an artifact that hoses wasteland/ghost quarter/valakut/manlands for a long time. A single card that hoses ALL big mana decks in the format seems unfair.
I just want a cheap whirable artifact that destroys an enchantment or artifact when it enters the battlefield. Or something like detention sphere that's an artifact
Lands are way more busted than artifacts. They have ancient grudge in the format and still printed stony silence.
I think it's reasonable.
The third tron land and valakut have usually already done the damage the turn you get to answer it. I think a card that shuts off a single named card (mich less an entire typelike stony) is very reasonable.
Just an update on the PLaneswalker tezzeret control shell. My last 5 tournaments have had two 4-0, one 3-0-1 and two 3-1.
My losses were to grixis control and jund control mixed with some truly horrific top decks from me (against jund g3 I missed on ten turns in a row with azcanta on any relevant action, it was unreal)
In short the deck can run with the big boys.
I have read a lot of the comments from people who are dubious of the deck's quality because it seems not to have any new cards. And I've really thought about that as someone who's played tezzeret control in standard and with virtually no
Success in modern for years.
Here are the key new(ish) cards that are key in making the deck viable:
Inventors' Fair - stall breaker/burn helper plays two very important roles.
Collective Brutality - I think this is basically working CB for all it's worth. Having four of these in the main nearly guarantees you're not gonna get run out of the game before the tezzerets land. Also gets you under bridge. Two major reasons tez bridge didn't work in the past.
Search for Azcanta - I cannot gush on this card enough. It is such an incredible boon to long form decks. You can finally pack your deck with potent answers and giant bombs and your variance of loosided draws is slashed. It really ties the room together

The only changes to Meltiin's list that won the modern challenge in late Oct is that I shaved a chalice and the rack from the side for two fatal pushes, which come in all the time.
As for mainboard changes I think the ballista might be better in the side. He's never really gotten me out of a jam because the opponent's hand is usually packed with removal. I might play a third azcanta or inquisition in place of him. Maybe make room for him in the side, cause he's good against stupid birds/hierarchs attacking under bridge - but can't be searched by big tez which feels like a bust.
I just love this deck and will keep jamming it unless something major happens.
Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster. I first made this deck for a friend when we did the modern team event at GP San Antonio, (JUST after whir came out) and after watching him play the deck I wished I had ran it instead, lol. I have been tinkering around with it ever since (almost a year now) and think the card that will take this deck to the next level is coming out in the next set...Storm the Vault // Vault of Catacan. I am already brewing up a version of the deck with a red splash, and welcome any other insight as to how best abuse a quasi-reprint of the fabled Tolarian Academy. Looks like I'll have to take the plunge and get more Mopals to add to my mix...
To be honest it feels like a win more card. We don't really attack with creatures until we have thopter sword and by then we're probably already winning and don't need a ton of extra Mana. If it's storm the vault side wasn't an attacking condition and something more relevant and it cost 2 maybe 3 at most I could see it possibly depending on it's non flipped side. But I'd be interested in seeing what you have brewed. I could be wrong

Not sure what we can do with it yet, but the ability to ramp to 10+ mana on T4 or T5 is absurd. Not to mention it flips on end step so you could play this. flip it, and whir on the your opponents turn.

Glad you decided to join the discussion. I've played a red splash, and it is fine. I don't think storm the vault does anything for us, to be honest. This deck isn't looking to spend turn 4 to set up a turn 5 to get to 10+ mana. Nothing we have costs near that much, and if we have the combo online, we would rather just spend turn 4 making 4 thopters.
T1: land, Mopal, bauble, Welding jar, thopter/sword
T2: land, Pentad prism, thopter/sword
T3: Storm the vault (flips on end step) make thopters on opponents turn
T4: Profit
Obvs this is a best-case scenario, as far as I can calculate atm...but this seems way better than just 'win more' imho. Blightsteel Colossus could even be a whir target...
@concorddawn Welcome! Obviously the flipped card is insane. But the baggage, it costs four and doesn't win the turn we have it nor interacts with the opponent... heavy. As many of us can attest, as crazy as it sounds sometimes thopter/sword on turn 2 nut draw isn't enough to beat an unfair deck by itself.
I would never rule a new card out from testing, but this card seems to pull the deck even further into glass cannon territory.
Just my gut response, but please test and let us know if you're finding anything that's clicking because innovation is dope!
I can see your points, and they are valid. I certainly will be testing this out, the problem I face is that my lgs is not what one might call...competitive. I see few tier decks so my results will be skewed, but I will dutifully report my findings.

Tezz costs four and also doesn't (automatically) win for us when he comes down...but we play him cause he allows us to do insane, broken things. I agree testing is needed, but my excitement over this card is just too high. Psych levels at max.

I think that's a good point because vaults would be competing with Tezzeret for a spot and he searches for combo pieces, can end the game the turn after he comes in, and can clock decks in random gamestates with colorless (sometimes indestructible) 5/5s and still a good case could be made that he is almost not worth a spot in this deck *I said almost, everyone*
This deck is surely in a state of evolution and hasn't found its final form yet, so I'd never turn down some feedback on how it performs. What we can all attest to is how powerful and fun the deck is a lot of the time.
Found the guy on FB. He said that this config is mos def aiming to gain an edge over Tron decks that were expected this week-end. And that it delivered.
Lol the line gets thinner every day.
