Hey everyone, so I'm looking at putting together 8-Rack. Mainly because everyone at my local meta is putting in hard sidebaord for my Lantern Control deck, and because as it says in the Primer, 8-Rack does play a lot like Lantern and it looks like a hell a lot of fun. The list I was looking at starting off with is a list someone I know used to Top 8 a large Modern tournament in the area, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the deck.
One of the reasons I wanted to start with this list is because the idea of sacrificing Flagstones of Trokair to Smallpox gives me those feelings that make me think I'd be a super villain in a comic book. And being able to tap it for black because of Urborg makes it so you can turn 2 Smallpox into Liliana and just make your opponent weep.
But again I am looking for suggestions on changes I could make to do deck if there are some things you guys don't like too much.
The 2 Collective Brutality and the Damnation were additions I made myself. The guy who played the list had 3 Death's Shadow in their place but he was saying he honestly didn't like them and wanted to take them out, saying he was using them as sideboard cards for Burn. With that I added in the one card I have loved having against Burn in Lantern Control, Collective Brutality. Didn't know what to do for the 3rd slot though so I figured a board clear that doesn't ding you from Eidolon of the Great Revel might be a good idea.

With Smallpox in the deck you generally want more than 22 lands. You also might want to add another Raven's Crime. The effect a copy gives so just too good to not want to have every game, that's why we run 4-of. That said, it'd work fine as it is, you might land starve sometimes but that's ok.

With concerns to the land count, I think this deck won't have to worry about lands as much as other Smallpox lists due to how it runs Flagstones of Trokair. Since Flagstones makes Smallpox not put you a land behind, I think I can understand the lower land count. When I put the list together I will definitely keep track of how often I want more lands however.

Top again. 6 position. 3-1-1. I lost in the top against burn. I think it's a tricky matchup. For me the worst. I'll put another shadow on sb. Xd. Disgusting gives me the burn. Typical deck for small children
I am also a burn player and burn is not as easy to navigate as you think. I understand being frustrated with a loss but respecting the power of your opponents will help you improve more than being salty and equating their deck choice to child's play. Just my 2 cents.

Hey now...there's no need to call other's decks for small children. Even though burn is a straight forward and easy deck to pilot, we should respect other people's choices on choosing a simple minded deck. At the end of the day they just want to win without the hassle of thinking too much. A win's a win, as such we should respect their method of winning.
Also what's everyone's thought on Rain of Tears and Crack the Earth, as a pseudo smallpox for those rakdos rack decks
No worries here about calling burn a kids deck and I run 8rack and burn as my mains. And have heard 8rack called a no thought deck from a burn player; I find it funny. Depends on the pilot, especially for burn, it's initial concept is pretty easy to grasp.
I think of burn as a 50/50 MU. And would just drop my 2 dismembers and maybe 1 of my 4 Fatal Push for 2 asylum visitor and any extra Collective Brutality from the board, I have 1 CB mainboard. I'd say that's the best anti burn card currently and it also has game vs other decks, unlike Death's Shadow
VS Ancestral vision plan B is correct, Pack Rat has a lot of game vs grixis control after a discard or 2.
regarding Rain of Tears I'd say hard pass. Doubt even Death cloud rock decks run this and they're more pox like than we are. Against Tron and Valakut decks we can just Ghost Quarter.
Hello y'all!
I played my first GP this weekend, finished at an ok 277 place (for an amature that's not even played more then 50 hours in total the last three months).
I remember some games more than others, so expect some games to be more fleshed out than others. I always go unless I need to be quicker than my opponent.
This'll be a summary of my experience.
Day one
Round 1) Valakut - win
Not that hard, smallpox slowed him down and emptied his hand quick enough.
Round 2) Living end - win
Lost game one with a quick t2 LE.
Game two I go first and manage to get a Ensnaring Bridge Online and the turn after remove all copies of his Beast Within. He scoops.
Game three I T1 Thoughtseize his, takes an enabler and see that he has one land (myself a smallpox and three more lands). I proceed to deny him mana for the rest of the game.
Round 3) Storm - win
He scoops quick both games (even when I had no pressure). Best play was to see a hand with land, baral, remand and other things. I take a remand only to smallpox the turn after to get his baral, land and another card.
Round 4) Jund DS - lost (french dude that's made top 8 before)
Two racks in play, he at 7 life. I need to topdeck a removal, rack, smallpox or lilliana. A land and I losa game 1. Game two he was too quick.
Round 5) B(w) devotion - win
A home brew with some of the better BW cards for B devotion and some odd extras such as Griselbrand. I quickly demolish his deck for a fast 2-0.
Round 6) Esper control - win
Easy standard win game 1. Raven's Crime do a lot of work here. Game 2 he stumbles on land and I do some smallpox magic.
Round 7) UW control - win
The standards deck with Spreading Seas and such. Cant remember much but him calling a judge over my T2 Urborg play to get my swamp to give me black mana again (he played seas on it).
Round 8) Grixis DS - win
I wreck him both games. He didn't have much to do against me.
Round 9) Grixis DS - lost (1-2 vs Mattia Rizzi who later won the tournament).
Game one I get two racks online and reduce his hand size while smallpox kills his dudes.
Game two and three he goes defensively with his life total, plays for value and resolves a delve creature and keep up counter mana. I'm trying to get a lilly or smallpox resolved but he has all the anwsers with Stubborn Denial and Snappy.
The difference in skill with him and the player before were really apparent.
Anyway, a strong day 1 finnish!
Day 2
Round 10) Ad nauseum - lost
Game one he goes of from top deck Bring to Light into Ad Nauseum. I end that game with a Dismember, Fatal Push and five lands in my hand.
Game two he plays a leyline the turn befor I can cast my Lost Legacy. I kept a one lander with Lost Legacy, Surgical and a few discard spells.
Round 11) Eldrazi tron - lost
Miserable match up. Two fast losses. Got the bridge online game two, but he got two Endbringer...
Round 12) Jeskai control - win
Control with Geist of Sant Traft. I win fairly easily.
Round 13) UW wastes? - lost
A deck that went broad with tokens and I made a big misplay game two.
Round 14) Dredge - win!!
I won game ine with two racks after diminishing his hand from 5 to 1 quick.
Game two I start with a Thoughtseize to take his looting and see one land. I proceed to keep him from lands the rest of the game.
Round 15) Dredge - lost
Last round, and another dredge!
Lost game one as one could expect. Game two drags on with me finally at one life, a bridge online and he dredges for one of his two Ancient Grudge. He gets it with three cards left in his library...
And that's the end of my first GP!
I had a blast and pleased with my performance. Only thing I'd do different would be my sideboard. I'd use leylines instead of Surgicals if I had played today.
Excellent good report man, I like your list, very similar to what I play. I'm also thinking 4x Leyline is a good idea, you can Smallpox or Lilly +1 an extra Leyline away
im playing with 2 flaying tendrils and 1 night of souls betrayal, so i will have to at least think about it
i dont like damnation because 4 mana costing cards dont play well with ravens crime, smallpox and lili. the one of night of souls betrayal gets the pass for me because it can be a softlock agaisnt the swarm decks that we are soft to
Hello, played at my LGS for Modern Wednesday. I'm horrible at writing matches, so I apologize if this is not even constructive feedback...
Went 2-2, first time fielding the deck after weeks of testing and researching. I decided to go with a BW smallpox that utilized 2 myth realized MB and 2 Porphyry Nodes SB to be interchanged with each other if I was playing a more heavy creature deck.
Round 1, UBR DS 2-1
Game 1 LOSS: basically was doing my thing was able to empty his hand but he had a DS in play while I had 2 racks ticking him down slowly that worked in his favor
Game 2 WIN: Was able to tear apart his hand, surgical extracted a random card in his graveyard to gain information on how to play my hand, was able to get 2 shrieking and 1 rack in play which basically killed him before he could play anything significant
Game3 WIN: Oh boy I was able to get porphyry nodes opening hand, he plays aggressive and thoughtsiezes me turn 1 overlooks node and takes something insignificant. he played creatures cautiously which allowed me to tear his hand apart. He plays the Liliana Last hope and starts ticking her up, when she ults, I finally put down my nodes and as the game progressed drew fatal and dismember to keep the tokens at bay. This whole time his hand is empty and I have 1 shrieking and 1 rack in play. At this pt it was a race. He attempted to keep cards in hand but I was hellbent with raven's crime in the grave yard so I basically drew into discards with lands. Was a close game!
Round 2. 0-2 Eldrazi GW
game 1,LOSS I got wrecked hard...it was so fast, i was unable to take anything faster than he was able to tick me down with his creatures.
Game 2 LOSS: I sided in my MVP nodes again, took out the myths. brought in 1 bridge, and 2 surgicals. This game I made an error...and I lost sleep over this play lol. basically t1 noble heiarch, I had funeral charm and disregarded the +2/-1 effect and just thoughtsiezed. I feel like if I had turn down his ramp I wouldve possibly won? Nodes once again did work this game, was able to take down thoughtknot and noble, I surgical thoughtnot; however, oppoenent eventually ramps out of control with another noble and gets 2 reality smashers in play..#feelsbadman
Round 3. 0-2 Karn Tron
Game 1 LOSS: I did WORK this game, like I literally thought I was going to win, yet i think i made another misplay, I forgot to play smallpox since I thought I was going to win....opponent had 1 card in hand. end my turn, opponent draws last piece of tron plays his KARN that he had in hand.....He started removing my racks one by one, by the time he removed all racks he had 1 hp......ONE LIFE!!! T-T
Game 2: LOSS: He basically was able to get karn online with ease...I put up a mediocore attempt to tear his hand apart, but his sylvans scrying and all his maps and star really sped him up.
Round 4- BYE. since my opponent straight up said he didnt want to play against 8 rack (LOL?)
From the games I learned planeswalker have been giving me trouble. Any suggestions? Pithing Needle maybe? I also forgot rack could ping down planeswalkers right? or was it only the rack able to do that? or can shrieking affliction do that too?
p.s. how can I post my deck? I have it on tappedout but want to post it here so people see it

Our only way of interaction with a resolved planeswalker is The Rack or by animating a creature such as Mutavault or a Myth Realized. Myself I run a few creatures in the sideboard.
Shrieking Affliction causes loss of life, not damage. That's the difference. We can't redirect it to a planeswalker 'cause of that.
Hot on the wheels of destroying your own lands and discarding your own cards, 8Rack players now want to start timewalking their opponents in addition to that.
Now a bit more seriously - it might be fine if you are facing a field of swarming decks because it's so ridiculously underpriced, but you have to keep in mind that they will get an additional turn to reload and you can do nothing about it. Triggers and things like Liliana are great, but you need to be able to cast your removal and discard spells. The card is borderline unplayable most of the time, it's just too big of a downside. In order for it to be better than -2/-2 to all creatures it has to hit big things... aggro decks don't play big things and if you are playing this card against a midrange or a control deck you will lose... by a rough estimate... somewhere around 100% of the games you cast it.
As discussed this is the deck I ran yesterday...I feel like Asylum visitor could be a one of for Death's shadow?
I feel like lots of people overlook Funeral Charm. It's a very good card that acts like a weird collected brutality...esp with all the ramp that goes on in modern with the X/1 's
I honestly don't like Death's Shadow. I prefer Gurmag Angler which comes down about the same time. It can also be played in matches that you need more diverse threaths and it's more resilient towards removsl.
New damnation doesn't prevent us from doing things the following turn, only from untapping lands. We can still Fatal Push, Dismember, IoK, Crime, Thoughtseize, use Lili etc. You basically wait for them to over commit then punish them for it. Decks where we want this type of effect would be Eldrazi, Affinity, small zoo, merfolk, tokens, green ramp, elves, probably even a few others.
Another thing to keep in mind is we aren't paralyzed prior to casting this. 8Rack is well positioned to set them up for a Last Reckoning blowout. ie a few turns attacking their hand encourages them to dump their threats lest they lose them. Just because its 3cc doesn't mean we HAVE to cast it on turn 3, that's just one option. The critical part of this card is that 3cc IS within our curve, and 4cc is not. A savvy 8Rack player could make good use of this tool.

game 1,LOSS I got wrecked hard...it was so fast, i was unable to take anything faster than he was able to tick me down with his creatures.
I have it on tappedout but want to post it here so people see it
['deck'] [/'deck']
Just remove all the ' symbols in the tags. So let's say I wanted to post an Ashling the Pilgrim edh deck I'd write it like this:
['deck'=Ashling EDH]
Commander:
1x Ashling the Pilgrim
Cards - 99
99x Mountain
[/'deck']
Without the ' symbols in the tags that text yields the following result:
1x Ashling the Pilgrim
99x Mountain
Modern Decks:
UBG Lantern Control GBU
BRG Bridge-Vine GRB
Commander Decks
UBG Muldrotha, Value Elemental GBU
BRG Windgrace Real-Estate Ltd. GRB

2x Dismember
2x Fatal Push
1x Fetid Heath
2x Funeral Charm
2x Godless Shrine
4x Inquisition of Kozilek
4x Liliana of the Veil
4x Marsh Flats
3x Mutavault
2x Myth Realized
4x Raven's Crime
4x Shrieking Affliction
4x Smallpox
2x Swamp
4x The Rack
4x Thoughtseize
4x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4x Wrench Mind
2x Asylum Visitor
2x Ensnaring Bridge
3x Fragmentize
1x Night of Souls' Betrayal
2x Porphyry Nodes
1x Relic of Progenitus
3x Surgical Extraction
As discussed this is the deck I ran yesterday...I feel like Asylum visitor could be a one of for Death's shadow?
I feel like lots of people overlook Funeral Charm. It's a very good card that acts like a weird collected brutality...esp with all the ramp that goes on in modern with the X/1 's
