Personally I love Pia & Kiran. It would take a lot for me to cut them.
Lately I've been experimenting with playing main deck Ensnaring Bridge in the Eternal Scourge/Boros Reckoner slot. It's working pretty well actually.
Hiding behind the Bridge and ticking up Koth/Chandra feels pretty dirty. It's a complete stonewall against Eldrazi, Death's Shadow, Grixis, Mono Green Stompy (a matchup I've struggled with), Emrakul cheese decks, and others. I've been finding a lot of games lead to a lockdown where I will eventually win by throwing the Bridge itself at them with P&K. Doesn't help much against Valakut/Ad Naus, however.
@TexasGoyf: I would be careful about cutting an Anger at a big event. You're probably going to be seeing a lot more Burn/Zoo/Affinity/Coco than Death's Shadow/Eldrazi in my opinion. Speaking from recent experience at the SCG Baltimore classic, I cut an Anger and it definitely caused me some problems where I usually didn't have any. Roast is great, though - I've also considered going up to 2 in the main from my usual 1. I just wouldn't cut a sweeper for it.
@sjf40k: List looks like a good starter for sure. You may need to tweak as you go, but that list will definitely give you a feel for the deck. It's really fun to play!
So what are people's thoughts on the Planeswalker-heavy version with a single Obliterate in the MD? It feels like it might be a bit "Win More" of a build, but against slightly grindier matchups (Prison, Control, some Midrange), I think it might do pretty well. Anyone have any experience with this build?

I do like a good number of planeswalkers (6-7) with some bigger top threats (batterskull, wurmcoil). I really think obliterate is too high-end to matter much, perhaps try out a card like wildfire first and see how that goes. the problem is when you cast it you need to be ahead on board to lock out the opponent, so in that sense it is a bit of a win-more kind of card.
I sadly feel like this deck has gone down since fatal push to the point where I only play it for funsies and not competitively. There are just too many decks which play higher end cards that we get overwhelmed by (Eldrazi threats, Tron threats, Death's Shadow-like creatures). Skred is all about stumbling through the first 3 turns hoping to interact on the board long enough to deploy a threat, but in this meta I feel it's just too ineffective. Hopefully they'll be some good new additions in future sets that can help offset this in some way, but for now I've moved on to a jeskai midrange build.
However, I disagree on the meta call! All of the decks you named get hosed HARD by Blood Moon. If we need to up the average Blood Moon count to "Always play 4 MD," then so be it, but Eldrazi is almost always greedy with their mana, Shadow Jund MUST be greedy to shock themselves down, and Tron is Tron; if they don't quick-play a major threat, they lose to mana denial and PW board control.
Personally, I've just held burn and started aiming a lot more at face against Shadow Jund; make them respect the Bolts/Magma Jets/Chandras!
Wouldn't stealing Death's Shadow when over 13 life just kill it ?
Seems like a creative way to deal with it.
The best option is probably Kari Zev's Expertise as you can cast another spell for free.
There is also Roast to catch them before they get over 5/5.
Just necroing this since Death's Shadow is rising: I think Wrangle is THE answer to the matcup. 2 mana is welcoming, and 4 mana or less is hardly a drawback. I don't know if treason effects have any other use at the moment, but I suppose it can be sided in against other aggro decks to dump useless cards while having another cheap option to close games.
If you can Wrangle a Death's Shadow you can Roast it as well, I mentioned the more expensive option because it doesn't check power which can be an issue against those big monsters (Goyf also gets bigger than 4/5 most of the time in that deck).

I think I saw a post earlier that went truly "all-in" by running 4 blood moons and I think all 8 LD spells main. I don't recall if s/he had SSGs as well. It might be the case that something in that vein is worth trying out in the current meta. That would improve the odds against the large mana ramp decks. Perhaps Magus of the Moon is also worth a check, but I can see instances of BG/x floating in response and pathing/pushing.
But in any case, that's devoting a large number of cards to land disruption and really changes the texture of the deck. It's true that a landed BM can just steal matchups, but it's hard to solely rely on that trick to win consistently in a tourney. Like I said, I really do love the deck to pieces, but in my hands I just can't seem to get consistency out of it.

jasper got a few 5-0s on mtgo competitive league with obliterate in the MD 4-5 pages back. It's pretty good, but feels awkward because it's janky

It's not purely a win-more card as it can help win games you otherwise couldn't. But for me the problem is that it is too situational and also weak to CoCo/Chord/Snappy. I think Skred can't afford to have ressources rotting in it's hand for too long or having empty topdecks, therefore I abandoned it again after admittedly short testing. Still, it felt pretty good when it worked. Funnily, lots of guys don't know the card and ask whether it is legal.
Went to a 44-man tournament today, featuring swiss 6 into top 8. Didn't exactly go as planned.
Yesterday I juggled my mind between two versions to compete with the meta. I expected about the same as last time: Some tron, some burn and lots of midrange. In the end I went with this:
And actually my meta analysis wasn't wrong, but to everyone's surpise most Grixis Control or BGx player had fit 4 Death's Shadow into their lists. The other version I considered playing was 3 Bridges main + P&K (my old list) to counter zoo, but it's a bit sour that I ended up with the former since I could've had great game against the meta with the latter.
Anyways, a short summary of my games:
Match 1: Abzan CoCo
Game 1 I burned his dudes and landed a Moon at some point and ended fairly quick with a Stormbreath.
Game 2 I landed an early moon and proceded with 2 Molten Rains, but he had sandbagged a forest from his opening hand making him able to play a couple of CoCos after I resolved my Koth. I burned dudes for days, but he found Pulse for my moon, turning on his Gavony Township which pumped his way to victory since he'd landed lots of dorks from CoCo.
Game 3 I mulled to 5, keeping a hand with a T2 moon. He was able to fetch a forest and land a turn 2 Wall of Roots, which kept him in the game for long. At some point he CoCo'd both Spike FeederandSelfless Spirit at the same time, making me unable to deal with the combo as he Chorded for Archangel of Thune
1-2, feel like I should've won this one. In my defence an Anger at any time during game 2-3 would probably have won me the game.
Match 2: Grixis Control
Didn't play shadows, but had a couple Thing in the Ice. However with Probe gone I was able to rid of them in timely shape, making the matchup a walk in the park.
2-0
Match 3: Death's Shadow
This was one of the few who had a dedicated list to the creature, and I only won this barely. Game 1 I was on play with a hand of 3 lands, 2 SSG and Moon. I windmill-slammed a T1 moon and he scooped laughing. However at game 2 I wasn't able to sideboard anything else than -1 Moon for a Rain since I didn't know what he was on. I was somehow able to win anyway by chaining Koth into Chandra, treatening him from several sources. At the end I was at 1 health and were able to block his last attack with Scourge as he ran out of removal, dealing lethal to him in return with walkers.
2-0, with a big stroke of luck.
Match 4: Grixis Control
I was lucky enough to meet the only other Grixis player not featuring Shadow, which resulted into yet another easy win. This is what my list were built to beat.
2-0
Match 5: Titan Breach
Harsh, harsh. I actually won game 1 since he never found any Summoner's Pact or Terastodon to rid of my Moon, but that was lucky af. Games 2 and 3 went like this matchup usually do, there's not enough Moon or Rains to dampen their combo in timely matter. Again I hate myself for not bringing Bridges today.
1-2
Match 6: Grixis Delver w/Death's Shadow
One of the more interesting Shadow lists, featuring Delver, Snappy and Tasigur instead of Goyfs. Game 1 it took a long time before he played the Shadow (2, actually), so I probably wasted a Skred along the way which could've saved me. Eternal Scourge would theoretically fix this matchup, but once they land 2+ Shadows there's no chance without Bridge.
I was able to win game 2 with a savvy chain of Koth -> Chandra -> Roast on his Tasigur, ulting Chandra and being able to burn him while taking only 1 big hit from Shadow.
Game 3 he got down multiple shadows early, and dodged a Roast by bolting himself in response. Couple beats and I'm down.
1-2
3-3 total.
Usually not sad about a result like this, but I feel like I screwed myself with some bad metagaming this time. I didn't meet a lot of Shadow and only lost to 1 of them, but there's was a lot more in the room which I dodged. Didn't meet any Zoo, BGx or tron either which is what I suited for (alongside "normal" Grixis Control). From now on I suppose I'll go back to Bridges main, and maybe a couple Ratchet Bomb in the side.
I played a championship this last weekend and I had great results and exercises that I want to share with you. Sorry my english, I'm brazilian and I used google to translate kkk
Deck
2x Eterno Scourge
3x Stormbreath Dragão
3x Pia and Kharin
4x Koth do Martelo
2x Chandra, Tocha de Defesa
4x Skred
4x Bolt
3x Raiva dos Deuses
4x Relíquia da Progenitus
4x Mind Stone
4x sangue Lua
G1- He started did noble that was dead with 1x Skred, turn 2 land and pass, turn 3 my Blood Moon, dragon and GG very easy G1
G2 - I made the idioce to stay with a hand without lightning or skred, result, bug 4/4 turn 2 GG
G3 - I mumbled to 5 came blood moon, I descended her turn 3, dragon finished
(Tip if you do not start, stay with 1 hand to kill the thunderbolt or birds if it's not defeat at all)
Tarik 1-0
Math 2 -Hatebear / eldrazi
G1- made Blood Moon and killed the little critters, anger did a good job.
G2- a ten-minute tense match, we wiped out the hand with no bugs or anything, but I bought 1x chandra that won the game giving me an absurd advantage
(Hint: Never stay with one hand without lightning or skred or anger)
Tárik 2-0
Math 3 - Bant Eldrazi
G1- bought again until Blood Moon came (4) and she won the game, I started)
G2- made the idiocy again to stay with a hand without lightning ... 4/4 gg for him
G3- perfect mana hand, in the end bush the noble, turn 2 stone turn 3 blood moon turn 4 dragon gg
Tarik 3-0
Math 4-UW Control
G1 - g1 down relic, on turn 4 he nullified my Koth, his turn he did gideon GG had nothing to do (nor did he know that UW wore white Gideon ¬¬ I never played against)
G2- I was clever, I did relic, another relic, when he made visions and passed I gave Blood Moon on my turn, he got caught and dragon finalized
G3- I waited for the right moment and made Blood Moon again and again dragon and chandra played frighteningly
Tárik 4-0
Math 5 - Naya Burn
1-2
G1-diexei el without card in hand and I with 3 of life, and he still 18 he fought lightening and killed me
G2- he mulled to 5 had no strength gained with dragon.
G3- did not come the claws of dragon (4) and even then it happened the same thing he got his hands and started the lightning
I found the math very difficult ... I had never played against
Tárik 4-1
Math 6- Kiki Chord
G1- Ray and Anger won the game
G2 - after a blood moon he did not stop spitting bugs, it was tense game, he did nahiri, stuck with the dragon he made birds and blocked, he did this, then conceded when he saw the 3 dragon on the table
I use 4 side bridges and none came! Scourg even not liking him saved me too much, and 3x Pia fact! Wanted to go to 4 she is sencacional with aggro field! Use that girl!
I feel like the deck needed to come to life!
But I do not know what to take to put 1x Baterskull
The deck has an absurd synergy I was happy, I lost to Naya burn and there was no way, my hand came good and his also, he was luckier, with his hands zeradic blood moon he popderia comprar Boros charm, command, helice but comrpou Lava Spike kk even so had 18 life..very difficult. And in no match I got 5 manas, which bothered me.
The day before I trained with the powerful Dath shadow
And I made 2-2 put the 4 bridges and did not come, I lost the first 2 testing the deck, in the second notice, stay with a hand with relic, lightning and Pia, the sink and karin shine in that match. He wanted to know if she was going to do something in the match, I'll twist the next bridge and get her down, because they have a lot of discards.
This month I have a championship with 70 people, I would like asjuda and counsels against INFECT, BURN and tron
I've never played against those championship maths, it's different, blood in the eyes. Which cards do you take that are not efficient ???
Well, I guess everyone's playing Skred today. Today, Pat’s Games hosted a Modern 1K. I don’t play Modern often, but have tried to get in some matches over the past few weeks so I wouldn’t completely embarrass myself. Here’s what I was on:
3 Pia & Kiran
3 Stormbreath Dragon
2 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
4 Koth
4 Bolt
4 Skred
3 Magma Jet
3 Anger of the Gods
4 Blood Moon
3 Mind Stone
4 Relic of Progenitus
Round I: David on Elves: 0-2 (0-1 for the day)
- Game 1: Elves is the kind of deck Skred should beat the ***** out of. However, sometimes you have incompetent pilots like me who think they should bolt all the mana dorks instead of things like Archdruid and Ezuri. I quickly get overrun and die.
- Game 2: The exact same thing happens, because I don’t learn things. Fortunately, David goes undefeated hereafter and helps my breakers.
Round II: Noel on Esper Control: 2-0 (1-1 for the day) - Game 1: I land a quick Blood Moon and follow it up with Chandra. Relic & Anger keep Lingering Souls in check, and it’s a cakewalk from there.
- Game 2: Chandra resolves. Then a Stormbreath resolves. Then another Stormbreath Resolves. I end the game with the 3rd Stormbreath in hand.
Round III: Tim on Bant Eldrazi: 2-1 (2-1 for the day) - Game 1: I know Tim’s on Bant Eldrazi, but keep a hand with no Moon. TKS and Smasher come down quickly and I die.
- Game 2: Still no Blood Moon, but we build up a big board with Rabblemaster, Pia & Kiran, Stormbreath, Swagtusk, etc. Eventually mine wins out.
- Game 3: Blood Moon and Molten Rain decide to show up and they win.
Round IV: Brand on Junk: 2-0 (3-1 for the day) - Game 1: I’ve played Brandon a decent amount in Legacy, and expect him to be on Jund. He keeps that illusion going for a while with Inquisition and Grim Flayer, but then drops Lingering Souls. This was a relief, as I was expecting a Death’s Shadow to make short work of me. Anger and Blood Moon clean things up and he never recovers.
- Game 2: Blood Moon and Stormbreath do their jobs.
Round V: Bryan on GW Hatebears: 1-2 (3-2 for the day) - Game 1: I’ve played Bryan the past few times I’ve gone in for Modern, and he’s usually on some fun GW or Bant brew. This was no exception. Didn’t take any notes, but I think Stormbreath did a lot of work here?
- Game 2: He locks me out pretty hard with Leonin Arbiter + Ghost Quarter, and some other gross stuff happens.
- Game 3: We trade haymakers for a while. At one point, I have active Chandra, then drop Koth and Stormbreath. He Chords into Wilt Leaf Liege to pump a Voice of Resurgence token, killing my Planeswalkers. I swing for lethal with Stormbreath and get blown out by Blessed Alliance.
Round VI: Will on RG Ponza: 2-1 (4-2 for the day) - Game 1: The one time I played against Will he absolutely wrecked me. I knew he was on Ponza and was dreading this match. He did his thing with 4 Acid Mosses, then dropped an Inferno Titan.
- Game 2: He only has 1 Stone Rain, so I get to cast spells! Skred deals with Obstinate Baloth, then Rabblemaster surprises him and closes it out.
- Game 3: I kill his turn 1 mana dork, then Molten Rain his 3rd land drop. He’s stuck on 2 lands, and I make double Rabblemaster for the win.
Round VII: Aaron on Death’s Shadow Jund: 2-1 (5-2 for the day) - Game 1: At this point I’m in 13th. I’m relieved to have beaten Ponza, but I have to play it out if I want to cash. Aaron turn 1 fetches > shocks > Thoughtseizes. Ah, the boogieman of the format. I manage to stabilize decently and come close to killing him when a Battle Raged Goyf kills me.
- Game 2: Boros Reckoner does work!!!!
- Game 3: I get to resolve a Blood Moon and lock him out of playing Magic. Reckoner + Skred protect me from Goyf and I get there.
Turns out my two losses both made Top 8, so I came in 9th on breakers, which was good for $72 in store credit. A solid day of Modern!
I'm gonna be playing Skred at GP San Antonio (Team Modern), so I'm considering my sideboard options. The board I ran in the 1K was good, but wondering if I should reconfigure a bit in anticipation of decks you'd expect to see at a Team event.
Specifically, it occurred to me that Merfolk might be a pretty popular option. For the most part we have a good matchup vs Fish, but Master Of Waves seems really problematic. Do you guys think I should toss in some sort of colorless answer, like Pyrite Spellbomb, Reality Hemorrhage, or Eternal Scourge?
I'd say toss in 2 Pyrite Spellbomb into the board, or possibly move one into the main if you're really worried about Merfolk. I'm not familiar with team meta though.
Eternal Scourge won't do much if you get hit with Spreading Seas. You could also consider swapping an Anger for a Kozilek's Return for extra insurance.
Not a big fan of Reality Hemorrhage as it's the same cmc for the same effect as Pyrite Spellbomb, but less flexible and more susceptible to Curse catcher.
Good morning warriors!
Fish is a deck that can be an easy victory for you, but a defeat so fast and frightening, I have trained against newt, the tip I give is the following, MATE ALL, until 1/1 kill !!!
I'm using 4 Anger and 4 Pia and Karin from main deck, and 3 side bridge, on the 26th I'll have a big championship and I'll play. After you kill the initial critters it tends to be slow, I've already won many blood moon matches against the UW Fishs, now if it's mono or fish it's more tense!
This list goes to the champ, the Bomb against the fish with protection is good! But I do not use it for the simple fact, that if it does not come in a timely manner, you'll have a fish with very great protection!
Team Modern tries to build decks with as few staples shared between decks as possible. Merfolk, Affinity, or Ad Naus will almost always show up on a given team because they play little to no shared staples. That doesn't mean you won't see decks like Jund, which are basically piles of staples, but you won't see them too often. Good luck out there!
TCG States results came out. I'll post my observations and notes later when I have the time.

Didn't meet any Zoo, BGx or tron either which is what I suited for (alongside "normal" Grixis Control). From now on I suppose I'll go back to Bridges main, and maybe a couple Ratchet Bomb in the side.

Math 1 - Bant Eldrazi
2-1
3 Pia & Kiran
3 Stormbreath Dragon
2 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
4 Koth
4 Bolt
4 Skred
3 Magma Jet
3 Anger of the Gods
4 Blood Moon
3 Mind Stone
4 Relic of Progenitus
2 Scrying Sheets
21 Snowy Mountains
2 Goblin Rabblemaster
3 Boros Reckoner
3 Vandalblast
4 Molten Rain
3 Dragon’s Claw
Round I: David on Elves: 0-2 (0-1 for the day)
- Game 1: Elves is the kind of deck Skred should beat the ***** out of. However, sometimes you have incompetent pilots like me who think they should bolt all the mana dorks instead of things like Archdruid and Ezuri. I quickly get overrun and die.
- Game 2: The exact same thing happens, because I don’t learn things. Fortunately, David goes undefeated hereafter and helps my breakers.
Round II: Noel on Esper Control: 2-0 (1-1 for the day)
- Game 1: I land a quick Blood Moon and follow it up with Chandra. Relic & Anger keep Lingering Souls in check, and it’s a cakewalk from there.
- Game 2: Chandra resolves. Then a Stormbreath resolves. Then another Stormbreath Resolves. I end the game with the 3rd Stormbreath in hand.
Round III: Tim on Bant Eldrazi: 2-1 (2-1 for the day)
- Game 1: I know Tim’s on Bant Eldrazi, but keep a hand with no Moon.
Round IV: Brand on Junk: 2-0 (3-1 for the day)
- Game 1: I’ve played Brandon a decent amount in Legacy, and expect him to be on Jund.
Round V: Bryan on GW Hatebears: 1-2 (3-2 for the day)
- Game 1: I’ve played Bryan the past few times I’ve gone in for Modern, and he’s usually on some fun GW or Bant brew.
Round VI: Will on RG Ponza: 2-1 (4-2 for the day)
- Game 1: The one time I played against Will he absolutely wrecked me.
Round VII: Aaron on Death’s Shadow Jund: 2-1 (5-2 for the day)
- Game 1: At this point I’m in 13th.
Eternal Scourge won't do much if you get hit with Spreading Seas. You could also consider swapping an Anger for a Kozilek's Return for extra insurance.
Not a big fan of Reality Hemorrhage as it's the same cmc for the same effect as Pyrite Spellbomb, but less flexible and more susceptible to Curse catcher.
4 Pia & Kiran
3 Stormbreath Dragon
2 Chandra, Challenge Torch
4 Koth
4 Screw
Skred 4
4 Anger of the Gods
4 Blood Moon
4 Mind Stone
4 Relic of Progenitus
2 Scrying Sheets
21 Snowy Mountains
2 Trap
3 Bridge
2 Vandalblast
4 Melting Rain
4 Dragon Claw
I've never used these cards, are their impacts so absurd?
Which ones do you use?
Goblin Rabblemaster and Boros Reckoner
I have made SOMETHING positive results with my list, but I have never tried these other 2.
TCG States results came out. I'll post my observations and notes later when I have the time.
3 Rabblemaster
2 Reckoner
2 Vandalblast
2 Pyrite Spellbomb
4 Molten Rain
2 Dragon's Claw
Look alright?
Would it be cool if I post my Twitch channel in here? I've been streaming Skred lately and plan to stream some more tonight.
