Hey guys. I'm looking to build a modern deck and really like the look of this. I'm going to build this on MTGO and can spend 100-140 TIX for the mainboard. I've sorted out a budget list that excludes Noble Hierarch, Verdant Catacombs, and Voice of Resurgence, however I can't find a decent replacement for Voice that comes close to his value, and with that much power and synergy with the whole deck. Replaced him with 3 Fleecemane Lion as I think it might be the only 2-drop that fits the role of... somewhat efficient beater (admittedly I was specifically looking for a G/W creature, maybe I should try a better single-coloured creature and sacrifice that little synergy with Liege?), and 1 extra Qasali Pridemage. I know Hierarch is more than just a dork and exalted is very powerful, but I've had to replace her with... just a dork unfortunately (Avacyn's Pilgrim and/or Llanowar Elves).
With 1 free slot for something, another dork or piece of removal I guess (I'd hate to have 4 boring dorks, but if it's necessary)
I feel like I'd be losing far too much power if both the Hierarch and Voice were dropped... Would a budget list without these key cards even be viable at like a FNM level, maybe a little higher?
I was thinking of building Bogles, picking up the Paths and majority of the manabase for a Wilted Rhino deck along the way (dropping Horizon Canopy in Bogles as that'll be about in my TIX range) and completing the deck over time.
EDIT: Sorry but am I in the right section? Should I take this to another subforum?
Technically speaking, I think you're supposed to take these questions to the budget forums, but we've answered similar questions recently.
As far as competitive-ness, that depends on how competitive your local FNM environment is. In places like New York City, it's really cutthroat, and I can tell you without a doubt, they will fold you up with that list. You're raw power isn't as high without Voice of Resurgence. It's necessary against certain decks to make sure 1 wrath effect doesn't fold you up or to force that blue control player to play at sorcery speed. Even Noble Hierarch's value is pretty high when I consider that having one on turn one adds a significant amount of damage and ramp simultaneously. It's the reason every aggro deck that plays 2 of its 3 supplied colors want to play it. All that said, you can still win with this deck. Optimizations aren't going to be the end-all, be-all even in competitive environments. So "figure out sideboard plans for your weaknesses, sleeve 'em up and turn 'em sideways" I say.
Hey guys! So I really like this deck and want to put something like it together for maybe a post GPLA meta and testing. I have recently seen an uptick of Elves playing a transformational SB into Melira combo, and think this deck could do something similar. While we are on a completely different G1 plan than Elves (doing something slow and fair), I think we have reasonable game against a lot of the things I expect to see at this upcoming GP: Jund, Control and Zoo. I feel like if we can take game 1, we can take game 2 by catching them off guard. I could be totally in the wrong here, and would love to hear some opinions. Admittedly, I did not read back very far, so if this has been covered, let me know.
I've been in your situation too. I'm down to just needing 4 Verdant Catacombs so slowly have made progress.
I'm fairly confident that Avacyn's Pilgrim is the best CHEAP alternative to Noble Hierarch. I basically went looking for one mana dorks, and he's the one I singled out.
The reasoning for him over Llanowar Elves is that they both need green on turn 1, which means you'll have green on turn 2. What do you need on turn 2 more than another green source? White! So turn 1 Pilgrim will let you play a turn 2 Pridemage/Voice.

Yeah that's what I figured too. If the deck needs a t1 G source, then Llanowar Elves is just a poor choice over Avacyn's Pilgrim in a deck so reliant on multiple colour sources. Elves of Deep Shadow pings yourself which sucks, and B is much less likely to be needed on t2 (but there's always fetches for that too). You never realize how amazing Bird and Hierarch are until you look at the other choices.
I think I might be able to squeeze a Hierarch into the budget anyways, which I'll definitely hit turn 1 every game.
Sounds good. Maybe I could have some hate-based 2-drops in the board to strengthen this weak spot in games 2 and 3, like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Kor Firewalker. I don't think I could incorporate Leonin Arbiter, that'd mean loosing fetchlands and I'm guessing also access to a consistent t1 G WITH t2 W or B? (to consistently play t1 dork, t2 GB for Abrupt Decay, or ramp into t2 Anafenza, the Foremost without needing a Bird for the B; probably the hardest situations for the deck's manabase considering Razorverge Thicket makes t2 GW much easier, and I don't need BW for anything).
Also how well does Abzan Liege perform against Abzan Company?
So quick note: I have recently taken this archetype up as my main archetype in modern with Living end as a back up. I went for the liege route because, well, tarmogoyf and the dollars... But while I'm saving up, I figured that the beatdown route would be the ideal one for my playstyle.
First off, here's my current list. I built it myself however it ended up looking very similar to current lists, so I guess I might have done something right. Anyway, here's what I'm working with -
Some things that i've noticed with the deck so far: There's games where it's Zoo, and there's games where it's Jund, and either route is entirely dependant on the draw that I get. What I mean by this is that there will be games where I curve Birds into Anafenza into Thragtusk and just beat them down, and other times, I'm on the turn one go to 15 Thoughtseize plan with a path, Angished unmaking, and a kitchen finks in hand as backup. Now, I'm not necessarily saying that this is a bad thing, I'm just a bit afraid of what could happen if I get the wrong game plan in the wrong matchup. For example, my Zoo hands will decimate burn with how much incidental lifegain and giant haymakers I throw down, but any hand with thoughtseize and abrupt decay is just asking to get its face burned off. So is there any way that I can mitigate this, either through some sort of card selection or filtering, or any other means? I play Nic Fit in Legacy (Which is also why I chose this archetype - Lots of crossover), and there I have Top and Green Sun's to fix this issue. Is this just something that I need to live with in modern?
Anyway, I very much enjoy this deck, and may not even make the switch over to the Tarmo build when I can. I will be putting a lot of hours into this deck, and I hope that I will be able to bring some more fresh perspective into what appears to be a decently active thread.
@JankPlays, you kinda need to figure out how you want your deck to run in general. If you look back several pages (and even on the front page), you'll see a bit of a rift in this subforum between going on an aggressive tilt or more of a midrange/control tilt. I have slanted my deck heavily towards aggro. By that, I mean that I play as few non-creature spells as I can possibly get away with for a metagame. In this strategy, I completely hate Thoughtseize in the main deck or the sideboard since it doesn't do enough for me even in my bad matchups. I also don't bother with Maelstrom Pulse or Anguished Unmaking. My plan is to run enough threats out there to keep my opponent off balance. It's easy enough to tell if I'm in the driver seat or not, and, when this deck gets aggressive, it can surprise many opponents because it's not a common deck to see.
The slower midrange version has some very interesting lines of play but relies more heavily on black spells: Painful Truths/Abzan Charm, Thoughtseize, Abrupt Decay, (now) Anguished Unmaking, Tidehollow Sculler and some planeswalkers in addition to all of this. It's pretty decent but the lines between that version and the more well-known midrange Abzan get blurred.
At the end of the day, you have to know what style you want to play. Also, I would add 1 Qasali Pridemage to your main deck for something. Maybe 1 Anafenza, the Foremost?
The way I want to play the deck, I don't want to over commit to any given board state. I just want to jam one or two threats out there and tell the opponent to deal with them. Based on the aggressive v midrange description, I'd say that i'm the control variant.
So from that, am I basically attempting to recreate Abzan Midrange but with bigger dudes in place of liliana, goyf and bob confidant?
I've no problem tossing in some painful truths, but I also really like all of the creatures in the suite that I have. However, if i'm stuck scrambling for a certain game plan, am I just better being a dedicated budget Abzan Midrange deck and cutting the creatures down to Rhino, Anafenza, Tasigur, scooze and finks?
In regards to the pridemage piece, Anafenza has proven to be much better than QPM in several matchups, and without a reliable way to tutor for the mage I feel like making the deck less consistent in order to have access to a silver bullet that i'll realistically never draw isn't the best plans. If I were to be playing more draw spells like a 2-3 of PTruths, then that option might open up, but as it stand right now I don't think that I can rely on a singleton pridemage main.
I wouldn't call it a budget Abzan midrange. I feel traditional Abzan midrange durdles way too much and has to rely heavily on their sideboard to fix many matchups.
In that vein, I suggest Tidehollow Sculler and Abzan Charm as possible additions for your deck. The first helps slow them down and the latter has versatility in the form of removal or digging deeper. Oddly enough, sometimes the counters are good enough to save your creatures from damage-based removal or blow-out opponents who make bad blocks.
After scanning the current abzan midrange thread, I believe that I'm in the right place posting here because regardless of the final build, I know one thing for certain is that I'm playing Noble Hierarch in my deck, and that's just something that traditional midrange just doesn't do. So I guess now it just kind of comes down to testing. Abzan charm is mad spicy, but it could work out. Hitting the batting cages on that one, will report back if anything interesting develops.
I am struggling to see how tasigur and avacyn fit into this deck over some other cards but I am down to give this a spin. What changes would yall make to this list if any?
Anyone who can post an updated competitive dorkless build?
I've no budget yet to build the aggro version (lacking Hierarchs) and I can only build the dorkless version based on my pool of cards. I plan to give it a test on small tourney (probably 10-15 people).
The Anafenzas are obviously very strong against Melira Company which has been proven a very difficult matchup game. Cage and Zealous (to wipe their board) also helps against Abzan Company.
Against slower combo decks like Ad Nauseum and Scapeshift I've chosen to go with 4 Lieges simply because I don't feel like 2 Thoughtseizes does enough against them and being more aggressive seems like the way to go. Too much hand disruption can instead dilute our aggressive game plan.
Kitchen Finks is one of the weakest creatures in the deck as Burn is slightly getting played less nowadays but synergizes well with Anafenza.
Lingering Souls as a 4-off is very strong together with 7 pump effects.
I'm trying out 3 Thalias in the side again. I helps against Ad Nauseum, Infect, Burn, Storm. Basically all non-creature combo decks and also control to some extent. I don't think it is the best against GR Valakut and RUG Scapeshift but it might slow them down. Aven Mindcensor is much better here.
Memoricide is for all the combo decks that rely on a specific card to combo off.
This is very much appreciated. I have everything except Hierarchs and some lands. Is it really that bad for the dorkless build? I'll try to substitute it with another mana dork and see from there.
Round 1: 1-2 against Abzan Company.
Game 1, I had a nice aggressive start but he eventually assembled his combo after 3 Companies. Game 2 was much better: Turn 2 Anafenza followed up by a Smiter and later a Persecution which sealed the deal. Game 3, I had a turn 2 Anafenza but he a had a Path for it and he later won.
In: 2 Cage, 2 Zealous Persecution, 1 Mindcensor. Out: 2 Finks, 1 Voice, 2 Souls (because of Cage. Same goes for Finks).
Round 2: 0-2 against Elves.
I got obliterated both games. Nothing much to say here.
In: 2 Cage, 2 Zealous Persecution, 1 Mindcensor and 2 EE. Out: 1 Finks, 2 Souls, 2 Voice, 2 Anafenza.
Round 3: 2-0 against RB Vampires.
I won both games fairly easily. He played a budget deck.
In: 1 Purge. Out: 1 Anafenza.
Round 4: 1-1 draw against BUG Midrange.
Game 1, he had more creatures than me and I died. Game 2, I was able to come back from a Damnation sweeping 4 Spirit tokens and 3 mana creatures and later killed him with Noble and Township beats. Game 3, was very grindy and close but we couldn't finish it in time.
In: 1 Purge, 2 Persecution (had Confidant, Clique and Kathari Remnant. Plus it pumps my Spirit tokens and is good in combat). Out: 2 Anafenza, 1 Finks.
Round 5: 2-0 against Grixis Thing in the Ice control.
Won both games fairly easily as well. Smiter got through counter spells and Siege Rhino was a champ.
In: 3 Thalias, 1 Purge. Out: 2 Anafenza, 2 Finks
Round 6: 2-1 against Grixis Control.
Game 1, I had 3 Spirit tokens, a Voice of Resurgence and a Wilt-Leaf Liege which attacked for lethal eventually. Game 2, Staticaster killed my Spirit tokens and mana dorks. I Decayed the Staticaster but a K-command returning the Staticaster and later a Kiki-Jiki + Exarch won him the game. Game 3 was similar to game 1.
In: 3 Thalias, 1 Purge. Out: 2 Anafenza, 1 Path (should've kept it in), 1 Finks.
I'm not too sure about Anafenza. I boarded her out in all the matches except for Abzan Company but there was a Living End player and a Dredge player, so they might be decent to have but I'm not too convinced yet.
1 Abzan Charm was good overall. Never a bad top deck and was also relevant against BUG Midrange.
Might cut 1 BoP. Had some openers with too many mana creatures.
Feel free to ask any questions.
I'm not convinced with Anafenza in the main but if there's a lot of Abzan Coco then she needs to be in there but if not then she is SB material. I haven't played the deck yet but I'm happy when I'm doing goldfishing. It looks promising compared to the dorkless version I built before. I tried to insert a pet card but it doesn't work well and the deck is better on it's original plan). I'd rather put an additional Abrupt Decay or Path in the main since I lack Hierarchs and surprisingly I couldn't find Avacyn's Plgrims as a replacement. I'm using an Arbor Elf and Elvish Mystic for now while I'm waiting for the Pilgrims and hopefully the Hierarchs by end of next month. I know these are common cards but I haven't gone out for a while and in place of the third elf I'm goldfishing a Selesnya Evangel. Works silly when you have an Elemental token and might not get noticed but it'll be replaced once I play this week.
Question for fellow wilted abzan players - biggest part of my meta are aggro decks - do you recommend playing dork/dorkless version ( i am currently struggling with discard variant, however waiting for shipment with noble hierarch's and birds). What sideboard cards do you recomend for aggro matchups?
This is my first post, hello to everyone!
cheeers!
You absolutely want to play with mana dorks if you ask me. I don't think you should need any help against aggro. Well I guess you might want some help against Affinity, but that's about it. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and at least 2 Stony Silence should put the final nail in that coffin. Sometimes I switch out one of them for Fracturing Gust if I feel Boggles is around.
Any thoughts? Running two anafenza MB instead of the Scooze, easy hate for the Abzan Company game 1, and the full set of finks stead of split between loxodon, because there are much more aggressive decks around. The Avacyn is there for Jeskai Nahiri, full of mass removal, and the tasigur for grindy games.
You're setup to be more of a midrange deck. If that's your cup of tea, more power to you, but I don't think I'll be trying any of this any time soon. I find some of your choices interesting. Mimic Vat seems cool, but why not play it out of the sideboard? And I think I would prefer Sword of Light and Shadow to Sword of Fire and Ice.
Technically speaking, I think you're supposed to take these questions to the budget forums, but we've answered similar questions recently.

For the Verdant Catacombs I went with a Bloodstained Mire, Polluted Delta, Wooded Foothills and a Sunpetal Grove. I've played 97 games so far and I've only had it happen once where I wished I had a Verdant Catacombs.
For Voice of Resurgence you want to go with Qasali Pridemage. If you still have slots available after 4 Pridemage's, then go with Scavenging Ooze.
23 lands instead of 24.
I think the debate from what I've seen in this thread is 22 vs 23 and 6 dorks vs 7 or 8. 24 lands doesn't come up too much.
Yeah that's what I figured too. If the deck needs a t1 G source, then Llanowar Elves is just a poor choice over Avacyn's Pilgrim in a deck so reliant on multiple colour sources. Cheers this really helps, I was confused with balancing the numbers. We're an aggro deck, BUT there's seven 4-drops, BUT we run seven dorks.
