I sat next do the guy playing 8rack day two. Looked like he was playing legacy pox at first cause I never saw a rack effect.
I saw:
Waste not
Ravens crime
Small pox
I believe mutavoult
And Lilly I believe.
He was the scuffy old looking guy with long beard and hair. And he cursed out some little kid for calling judge because he was late. And he mumbled some thing I'll kick your A)$.
Being a police officer myself I wanted to tell my buddy who was part time as security there cause dude wreaked of poor quality weed.
That crap doesn't belong at a GP.
Agreed. Hopefully he got his ass handed to him by a 12 year old. We don't need douchebags playing 8-rack.

Tron, as we all know, can be a brutal brutal matchup. I see some rack lists try to include ghost quarters in the main/side, and sometimes fulminator mages. I'm curious about a different hate card that would almost exclusively go against tron.
I haven't had a chance to test it yet, and was wondering if anybody else has. Little bit of a nonbo if you intend to surgical extraction a destroyed urza land post board, but I like the fact we don't have to sacrifice a land, and the perfect cost of just a single black mana. Seems like it could be a pretty powerful play on turns 2-3, which would be backed up with more discard! Any thoughts?
Completely agree. As a community we must shun people such as this. Only high quality weed should be used by Magic players, especially at GPs. We wouldn't want to enforce the "basement nerd" stereotype even more, right?
oh my oh my.... this card looks good, I play 8 seas mana denial in my merfolk. this is the black seas claim. I may run a few, since i hardly even side nyxathid(sp?) in that much anymore
That brings up something interesting. Woulx you thoughtseize an amulet of vigor or summer bloom?
Depends on their hand of course. Leave Summer Bloom if they have no lands or maybe one land. Strip Amulet away in that case. Two or more lands in hand look to see what they are then take Summer Bloom. I'll let others give their opinion.

In my experience, Leyline of the Void has been pretty bad. I think I'd prefer to play tormod's crypt or relic of progenitus. Those are way better as topdecks and I don't want to put 4 leylines in (which you really need if you want one in your opener.) We can hose the grixis delv/snap/jace decks without needing leylines.
Bloom titan is a hard match up for us cause optimally it's so much faster. But if they have an amulet in hand I take that every single time cause without it they cannot pull the deck shenanigans. But that's just me.
Is the deck viable without Liliana? Would love to try out 8Rack but dont want to make the investment as I have never played modern before.
However, I already own a full set of Thoughtseize.

it is do-able but not really worth it IMO< i ran necrogentic mists before my lilies came, my win rate improved drastically with them

^^^ What he said, Necrogen Mists is your best replacement bet, but I can say without a doubt having borrowed a friend's Lilies for one FNM that the card is invaluable to the overall deck. But for now I'm back to running the Mists
Anything out there better than Wrench Mind for its slot in the MB? Wrench is painful when facing Affinity. I already run IoK, T'Seizes, and R-Crime. I'd rather just have a "target player discards 2 cards" in that slot but 3 cmc for Coercion or Delirium Skeins seems a tad overcosted and fighting for play with Lilys and Bridges in my deck. Pulling Teeth seems too random like it would be a 50/50 proposition to catch 2 cards or not. To me Wrench almost seems a better SB card than MB at times. Seems like I side at least 1 or 2 out a game as well. Once again I'm starting to wonder about Augur of Skulls. AoS almost works like a guaranteed discard one if it is countered/bounced and discard two if not dealt with as an opponent can chuck an artifact against Wrench. Anyone got some good or situational replacements?

Well wrench mind is an automatic 2 for 1 when it hits. Its overpriced when it misses but its never dead. It's worth the risks. Rise / Fall is an option but its a bad one.

I just wish it didn't have the discard an artifact option on it. We need it against Affinity and they just end up dumping a single artifact. Guess I need to look at the big picture as it catches 2 cards against most of the Meta. I just can't justify replacing it with Mind Rot for a guaranteed 2 cards at 3 cmc.

I'm running budget 8rack. I used to run 4 Augur but I ended up replacing them with Necrogen Mists. If I wasn't running Smallpox I might try them again but honestly I never got a lot of work out of them. Straight up discard is more useful than the drudge skeleton in my opinion.

As MemoryLapse said, there's simply nothing better than Wrench Mind. The only card better than it I can think of is Hymn to Tourach in legacy. Wrench is a quick 2 for one, that if played turn 2 after a turn 1 targeted hand spell, you're in a pretty good position most of the time.
Vs affinity, I would recommend side boarding wrench mind out, better things to do on turn 2 than get maybe one artifact from their hand. Try running more removal after sideboarding, like Bile Blight or Pharika's cure. Wrench mind will do little vs affinity as they tend to empty their hand for you!
Please explain the win cons for 8 Rack. Is it just The Rack?
What about Liliana's Caress?
Creatures?
Also, is this type of deck suitable for a new modern player?
Easy to pick up, very difficult to master as you need to learn how every other deck tries to win, and prevent them from doing so! 8rack is never as streamlined as it may seem at first glance. You aim to use targeted hand disruption on your first turn, from there you have to navigate your next 2-3 turns, and what your opponent is likely to do during his/her next 2-3 turns, and try to get a lock on the board state by that time. Or maybe you're already racing them down with the rack and shrieking affliction. Liliana's Caress is a little slim, as it does little to nothing if they empty their hand already, it's just a permanent that will sit in play and do nothing, which feels miserable when you draw it around t5-6 when you're trying to seal the deal!

If you are new to a format you should almost always be looking to play a relatively cheap and aggressive deck (aka Burn) before you settle down and know which strategies you like, which ones you don't and what you would want to invest into. It's a good way of being relevant (fast decks are always relevant) and learning the format. It will also be an invaluable experience later down the line when you play "your", since knowledge of the other side of the field and understanding the possible lines the enemy can take will give you a better chance of winning.

A.k.a. play Burn if you are new to the format.
